I might be wrong but this song sounds like Catalan to me, the language spoken in the province of Catalunya in Spain. Very beautiful song BTW even if it's not Natalie Merchant.
the video is creepy....I'm a Spaniard, from Catalonia , I moved to USA just 3 years ago. so I can asure if you have doubts that this is pure castillian from Spain, not the old one from Cervantes era....actually I sang this Christmas song every evening christmas with my family, even this last one...that I went there to be with them, is a very tradicional christmas song from Spain.(Europe)... the only difference is that the original one has a very happy rhythm, she sings it as a lullaby...
@GVbrave Certainly. The original version as sung by the Andalusian group Raya Real is much more happy. Here in Mexico we often sing this song in Christmas time. Greetings from sunny Mexico.
@flyby7a at first doesn't sound like it, I thought it was portugese, but then it turns out she's actually singing a very old spanish carol (I'm spanish)
@flyby7a IT DOES NOTTTTTTTTTTT SEEM TO BE SPANISH..
thank you for posting this. have heard it while surfing on the old web of natalie and was amazed, did not had the inspiration to download it and thought it was lost forever. i liked also the butcher's boy, another nottobefoundagain video of natalie merchant. do you have it by any chance? anyhow, great to watch it again... and again...and again.
The singer in this song, while she has a beautiful voice, does not sound quite like Natalie to me. If it's really Natalie where did you find this? I cannot find it on any of her albums.
@MrArtudtoo This song and music video was a Christmas gift from Natalie to her fans, and was available on her website a couple of years ago. I've created my copy directly from that site- I have not seen/heard it since on the site.
Que versión tan brutal, intimista y contenida. Toda una lección de clase y de saber hacer. Gracias Natalie, por el villancico. Bon Nadal y Feliz Navidad a todos, todas!
I am trying to find anything on Natalie with the Chieftains... Lowlands of Holland. I wanted to share it with my husband. About to purchase the album, though.
This is amazing. Just heard one with Tracy Chapman also... Beautiful. I miss her so much. I'm delighted to know she's returning!
The voice here is very far from being comparable to even Joan's early voice...It does not soar and pierce the air the way Joan's would do. I do admit Natalie is as versatile as can be and she is an artist who takes risk, always with impeccable taste. Now sorry for maybe over-reacting but it makes me cringe when I see comments about Joan as if she was a thing of the past...
This video is creepy.

Awesome song, but what's up with the weird popping sounds near the beginning? Surely those are not meant to be part of the track.

How great she is!!!, the accent sound like she was from spain, not the latin american accent. Very difficult for a non spanish speaker.

Very very beautiful. Sadly, the sound quality is low at this end - is that the video or my phones?
