  • Your arrangement of avalon is just fabulous. Congratulations. I love that song and the way you play it. I play on Tyros 2 too and would very much like to know, which voices, styles etc you use on your Tyros. Thanks a lot. I'm Swiss but used to live in the US many years ago.

Hope to hear from you. Greetings from a tyros fan from Switzerland

  • Hi @ lieniontyros,

Thanks so very much for the great compliments my friend!!!

I'm sorry that it's taken me awhile to answer you, but I've had some PC problems!

All is fine now though!!! I'm glad you enjoyed my arrangement of this great old song!!!

  • (Cont. from above)

To get this sound on your Tyros 2, go to "Swings, & Jazz" Style, and then play the "40's Big Band." It might not sound the same as mine, because I do all of my songs with multi-track recordings, but all of the sounds are from the Tyros 2 though! The "40's Big Band" sound is great, and I hope you have fun with it!!!

    Best Regards From California,

    Dwayne .

  • @ilovetrains63 Hi Dwayne

Thanks for your advice. I've been playing with the 40's Big Band. I agree it's great - but your arrangement is even much better - really superb. Maybee with the help of a friend I'm tempted to try some multi-track recordings too.

Many thanks again and regards from Switzerland.

  • Re. Dispute on writer credit Jolson. I doubt things have changed much and know even in my day that often times a writer would share credit just to get his or her song recorded, especially if a major act liked the tune and showed interest. So a deal would be struck. Often as well, publishing rights, especially publishing rights, were given away in the deal as well. To lengthy for space here but bottom line is that Jolson or manager might have insisted on credit in exchange for recording.

  • Hi Again JazzMad1,

Thanks for your insight!!! I agree with you....that's probably what happened!!!

I love Catalina Island....I've been going to Avalon since I was a very small child. You, and I are about the same age. They did have the "Undersea Gardens" back then when you visited, but it could've been before the season started, and they weren't running the boats as often. They've always had the glass bottom boats, (in some shape or form).

    Best Regards from California,

    Dwayne

  • Hey Trains ... small world. Love trains too and fondly recall trip with mom more then 60yrs ago from Htfd,Ct to LA,Calif.

    3,000mi. of wonderful clickity-clack.

Re. Avalon. Oh man. Nice going here. Wife and I spent part of honeymoon there 40 yrs ago. Loved the place. Wanted to move there. It's sure different now. No underwater garden back then.

What software used for your transitions? Loved the end, That All Folks.

I used to close my radio show with that so many moons ago. ThankYou for this.

  • Hi JazzMad1,

Great...I've always liked trains since my childhood days! Sounds like you had a wonderful time traveling all of that distance on the train!!!

Thanks a lot for the compliments!!! I'm glad that you enjoyed my arrangement of this great old song!!! My Grandparents spent their honeymoon on Catalina Island before Wrigley bought the island. I wish they'd bought property there back then! lol ;o)

I use a slide program called "Proshow Gold!."

    Best Regards,

    Dwayne

  • from a musicans point of view i can honeslty say that its played very well apart from a few missed chord perhaps......im not saying this to be horrid just so you can better yourself. please dont be offended

    Thanks for posting

  • Hi kieraneastwood123,

Thanks a lot!!! I'm not offended, but this is my arrangement of this song. So, there might be some different chords than the version you've heard before! This song has been played many different ways...from guitar finger picking to the big band sound, dixieland, etc.

At my age...I guess there's always room for improvement...even for an old man!lol

    Best Regards,

    Dwayne

  • lovely! Catalina island is a lovely place too!

  • Hi emmibalaj...Thanks a lot!!! Catalina Island is a special place!

  • Very nice job. Have you ever heard the Kay Kyser version of AVALON? Wonderful vocals. I love Catalina, and we try to get there every summer, though we havent made it over the last 3 years.

  • Hi ShockDoc...thanks very much!!! Yes I have....along with a host of others that recorded, or played, and sang this song. Like The "Pied Pipers," "Benny Goodman," "Harry James," etc.

They were all great renditions! I haven't been to Catalina in a few years either, and I need to go back soon...to get regenerated!

  • That was awesome!! I remember the wonderful Island from my childhood memories myself. I only wish there was enough time in a lifetime, to go back and see it all again. This is a great rendition of Avalon, brings it all together. Thanks for the tbit..

  • Hi seemethere24...thanks very much!!! Catalina is that special place on earth!!!

  • THANK YOU, THANK YOU. One of my very favorite places. This really brought back some wonderful childhood memories. I went dancing at the Casino ballroom when Jan Garber was there (with his soft shoe shuffle). You're all too young to remember that. Anyway, thanks again for taking me on a vacation back in time.

    Genereane

  • Hi genereane...thanks very much!!! I remember Jan Garber..."The Idol Of The Airwaves." lol Jan used to broadcast from the Casino Ballroom. He, and Guy Lumbardo used to sound so similar with their big bands. I remember "Gil Evans" at the console of the four manual "Page Pipe Organ" at the Casino Theater, and Gil's wife playing the chimes tower, from the remote location in downtown Avalon...when the S.S. Catalina, or S.S. Avalon docked at the steamship pier.:o)

  • The serenity, beauty and joy of Avalon - you've made a lovely video of that wonderful place.

  • Hi PismoBeach....Thanks...I'm glad that you enjoyed it!!! Avalon, and all of Catalina Island are definitely special! Happy New Year!

  • Great big band sound very well played.

  • Hi again exitfast...thanks a lot for the kind words!!! The island was the place for big band music at one time...great memories of those times!:o)

  • Heard the tune often before but didn't know about the island, thanks for enlightening me.Fine arrangement and interesting pictures,Thanks .

  • Hi patholm...thank you very much for the nice compliments!!! Every time I play this song, I think of traveling to Catalina on the "Big White Steamship," the "S.S. Catalina," or her sister ship the "S.S. Avalon." How sad that both are no longer around for those trips to the island.

  • Lovely sound. Not that I'm old enough to remember but it makes me imagine a war time dance hall. Nicely played as always. Happy new year to you for 2008.

  • Hi STBurger...thanks very much!!! Avalon, Catalina Island is a great place to retreat to for a little relaxation, and escape the fast pace of the mainland. I've been going there for years, and yes...I remember the "Big Bands" when they played there at the Avalon Casino. (cont.)

  • They used to have a loud speaker playing the music of the bands...over the bay at night. Very nice to stroll through the town, and hear Harry James, Benny Goodman, etc. as they played at the Casino ballroom. The bands played there before WWll, and after the war...into the 1950's. During the War...it was closed to tourism. Happy New Year to you!!! (Of course...I was just a young boy then) lol ;):D
