  • I like what was done at the end of video with the game cartridge...

  • DAMN ADVERTS, WASTED 15 SECS OF MY LIFE!! ADVERTS MUST DIE IN THE TAR PIT SO I CAN SEE CLASSIC GAME ROOM!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • They used a similar design for the SEGA Saturn backup cartridge. Those things are solid, love 'em.

  • The Genesis definitely looks like an interesting system. Unfortunately, I only ever owned 1 spaceship shooter (Xevious The Avenger for GBA) and I hated it. Couldn't stand it so I gave it to a friend who gave it to his grandpa. So if the Genesis's main claim to fame is spaceship shooters, I don''t think it woulda been my cup of tea. But it's a moot point since I turned 10 in 2001, and by then Sega hardware was finished.

  • You cant spell GENESIS without NES

  • omfg cyborg justice was ossom :)

  • i stack my sega genesis cartrages sideways so i can pull them out easily and i can read them

  • Uh the top text argument pissed me off quite a bit when AVGN was nagging about it, please don't join him with this... those things have their very own awesome boxes! What kinda collector throws them on the shelf naked...

haha, my dog knows the word 'walk' too :-) She got so excited about it when she wasn't so old.

  • @AMYuntold The kind who is only able to find just the cartridges when they buy the games. Seriously a lot of people threw away their boxes and about roughly half of my fairly small Genesis collection do not have boxes. I mean yeah it would be awesome to always have the box, but it's simply not always possible.

  • @WhyBeAre Yeah, My genesis collection is fairly competent, and almost none of them have boxes. In the 90's, nobody knew they were going to be collector's items, and everyone just threw them away and stacked their cartridges on the shelf.

  • Quelle coincidence! That's my dog's favorite Genesis game, too!

  • You can use it for a drink coaster, but why would you want to?

  • 7 minutes of cartridge design? Only CGR can make this actually interesting!

  • Hi, how to tell if my mega drive carts original or pirate? I am pretty sure they are all pirate, but how to know for sure? My carts don't have genesis logo on cover art, but some have sega logo on the back side of the cart, and some have GoldStar chips inside

  • I had the japanese version of Fire Shark, and it said "TORA! TORA! TORA!" on the cartridge, with an airplane on the background. I miss my genesis so much T_T

  • Are you kidding , fire shark was a very good game.

I still play it till now

  • I just bought a copy of sonic 2 for the genesis but for some reason the back says made in taiwan and watching this video all of mark's games say made in japan. Is mine fake or is it just a cheap reprint?

  • @CaptainPoovabladoo its fakeal

  • I've only come across one dead Genesis cartridge but it was because the insides were damaged.

  • @alfalfalaffa Not better, just different. I have both and prefer my Genesis. Mainly because the good games are easier to come by cheap. Got revenge of shinobi, streets of rage and golden axe together for <$5. Try finding Chrono Trigger or Contra 3 for that

  • where did you get these games?

  • The labels are facing downward because you're supposed to stack the cartridges back facing up so when you wanna play a game you easily take the cartridge off by placing your hands in the groove on the back of the game and it simply slides off the other cartridge below it.

  • 6:33 His favorite genesis game is Sonic the hedgehog

  • While 99% of my game cartridge collection work fine (after a little effort in most cases), you still have to watch out when buying for certain systems.

For instance, certain Tengen Genesis carts like Grindstormer had manufacturing defects that significantly reduced their lifespan. If you buy one, you have a 50/50 chance you will get a flat-out *dead* cartridge. That's happened to me twice already.

Shame too, because it's a really cool game... one that Mark would appreciate I'm sure. :)

  • i found a sonic the hedgehog 3 cartridge with round corners, is it fake?

it just says mega drive on the front and it doesnt fit in the system

but it works with sonic and kncukles oddly enough

  • @thekid20x6 Sounds like a Sega Mega Drive cart, there are ways to tell if it's fake, not too certain about it though. Sounds like a real cart to me, and a lucky find for you.

  • My Sonic The Hedgehog cartridge doesn't work, even after cleaning it out :(

  • Strider's artwork is awesome the same way Megaman's artwork is awesome.

  • i have about 3 broken nes carts (like the corners are chipped), but ive NEVER seen a broken genesis cart

  • view that here avatz,net change , to .

  • lol, Heavy Nova is the WORST. Me and a friend played it and I recorded it and put it on my channel.

  • i love the ending "how about a walk"

  • One thing you forgot to say is that the cartridge on the Japanese version of the Mega Drive is differrent design than the Western versions.

  • also the design for cosmic spacehead was weird as hell too

  • i have an american megadrive cartridge somehow....of jeopardy. it has that genesis logo at the top of the design. but all my other megadrive ones tend to have it at the bottom and like a few of the genesis ones, the logo varies in design from game to game

  • why is it called the megadrive in england and the genesis in america?

  • @NA3LKER I understand that it's due to a clash of names - a US company had already trademarked the name in the US, so Mega Drive couldn't be used. Besides, Genesis means beginning, and given how it started the era of true 16-bit generation consoles, it seems quite apt.

  • @MarkTheMorose mega drive also sounds good...at it means the console is being called mega....and it drives you to play it...or something....i actually dont know i just had to think of that >_>

  • omg back then they had a plastic hanger on the case to hang it on one of those metal racks

  • I found a box of 12 games or so in my dad's backyard, where they must've been for at least two years. They live in San Antonio, where it hits 100 degrees on a regular basis. Plus, some of my cases were the cheap paper kind, while other games had no boxes at all. Every single game worked perfectly, save batteries included.

  • @Hernia901 what do you mean "save batteries"?

  • @allanbrito123 Cartridge games that have a save option (RPGs, sports season simulations, Sonic 3, etc) save your progress to batteries that supposedly die over time. Genesis cartridges' save batteries must last forever since I don't think I've ever had a game's save function go out on me.

  • Yay no seek times, they probably will switch from cartridges and make new games come on flash media... would be very niice.

  • I have that game cart at 6:20 I cleaned It a few time's got a lot of dirt out of It, what's name of that game?.

  • Comment removed

  • Is this for real???? Don't get me wrong I'm a huge game fan, but reviewing a cartridge design for 'the way it fits into the console', jesus, you really need to get out, go to a park, walk down the street, anything. Just be outside. Christ. I'm appalled that in an age where video games are beginning to be apprecaietd for their artistic merit, and their contribution to modern culture, some chump is doing a 'journalistic' review of the bit of plastic they used to be housed in. Shame on you.

  • @matttaylordigital

i know. i used to like cgr, but over time have come to despise them. nostalgia gets in the way of their real opinions on old games and this guy reviews everything. first party controllers, cartridge design, game package art, different models of the same console.....etc.... for fuck's sake, learn when to stop. it's like

"oh hey, i found a coffee thermos, not let me review and compare it to a ps2"

    he's ridiculous

  • @highwaysonyfan87 Some people want to know detail for something simple, and as far as their "real opinions" go, I'm sure its the real deal. Just because nostalgia plays a factor it doesen't mean the game actully sucks. Besides he's pretty honost with his reviews he gives credit where credit is due, and also discusses the negitive qualities.

  • 3:37 Flamethrower with super-powered legs for awesome attack spins, you don't get that to often any more. :(

  • that look interesting!

  • i like cartrages cus there old school. screw play station 3 and xbox 360. GO 90's

  • Of course the one actual gripe he has with them he dismisses, because he's a fanboy of the genesis. That's actually a major complaint for me. Also, the EA ones are fucking horrible. That can actually damage your genesis if you leave them in there because the open space will let dust in. Basically, these are okay cartridges (Except for the EA ones, those are bad). The end labels are the main problem, but at least they have them. Also Megaman 1's artwork is WAY worse than Strider, tbh.

  • Haha, cute dog!

  • i painted my street fighter 2 sce cartridge and box gold.. BEST DECISION OF MY LIFE!

  • One thing that most consoles didnt have was a release switch for the cartridge. SNES is the only system I know of that had such a thing, though the orig. NES unlatched the game to smoothly pull it out. I use to get nervous pulling carts out thinking I was pulling too hard, having to keep my hand on the console for leverage.

  • How much was 16-Bit Walk? I might try it out.

  • Mega man 1 by far had the worst cover art ever.

    My god it was hideous.

  • I got a weird mega drive/genesis game cartridge design called micro machines millatary (i'm a bad speller) it got curved up edges and 2 extra controller ports on the front

  • That 16 bit walk must be awesome.

  • Out of all the Genesis games, My favorite game on that console would be Sonic 3 & Knuckles :)

  • @SonicFans468 i'll second that dude

  • I'v never seen a sega genesis cartridge, nor have I seen the system itself. It looks pretty cool!

  • Oh yeah...definitely is, man. I am fortunate to have one of my own =D it's a model 2!

  • Someday, I'll get my own Sega genesis! :D

  • @MultiClassicgamer WOAAAAAAAA, ARE YOU BEING SERIOUS?1, how old are you exactly?

  • @borninthe90sdecade I'm 14. Nobody's ever told me about one. And everbody I know doesn't have one.

  • @MultiClassicgamer Yeah you being 14 really explains why you've never seen or played one, my baby brother broke mine when i was 4 in 1994 but i was lucky to get 2 a replacement one from cousins

  • @MultiClassicgamer im 14 too and im the only one my age i know who appreciates the classics. i have ALL the sega systems beside the master an game gear. check out his review of afterburner 2 and the genesis system and you will be convinced to buy one. :)

  • @hazzardwantcookies I'm 14 but I only have a model one genesis I want a master system..mainly for the awesome light gun

  • (jaw drops) where is everyone finding these model 1 genesis'? i looked on ebay, amazon, craigs list, all my local game stores, and never found ONE, (besides broken ones or insanely high priced ones) does anyone know where to find a reasonably priced model 1?

  • Go to disc replay.

I got my Model 1 Sega Genesis with a power cord, an RF adapter, and a controller for just 15 dollars.

  • there isnt a single one anywhere near me. sorry to sound rude but like i said. i already tried all the game stores anywhere near me. thanks anyway

  • @ynohtna1996 yay i'm 13 and i'm also collecting classic game consoles.... i have an atari 7800 and i'll get an SNES and a Mega Drive soon!(sorry if my english is bad)

  • @hoques1432 im 13 and i collect classic game consoles aswell i play my nes all the time which i got a few days ago

  • just got sega magadrive foe free with 22 games games and one of the carts has 6 games on it and also i have 4 controllers and it wass all 4 free im very happy :)

  • @360NoScOpEr Oh god you lil' lucky guy :D

is it the "six pack" cart with columns, alien storm, super hang on and such?

  • no it has sega soccer, columns, super monaco gp, revenge of shinobi, sonic 1, streets of rage

  • "Is your favorite Sega Genesis game going for a walk?" LMAO!

  • Yeah the size difference between PAL and NTSC Gen/MD carts is minute.

But the difference in size between PAL and NTSC Snes carts is massive.

  • And the difference between Famicom and NES carts in even bigger.

  • how could u u feind why did u put tape on the label why not put it on the back of the game i bet u tore up the label trying to get the tape off huh

  • it was just Heavy Nova. calm down

  • i love my genesis. im looking forward to getting the Sega-CD add-on system and the Sega 32X add-on system for it. favorite game, linking Sonic the Hedgehog 3 onto Sonic & Knuckles.

  • Man you have great reviews...i love how to dog game companies and other systems

  • Walter Strider :P

  • They're very similiar to PAL SNES/Super Famicom carts

  • i don't know....i like nintendo cartridges more

  • AHHH WHAT CGR VIDEO DOESEN'T END WITH DUCK TAPE (i know there are videos that dont end with ducktape)

  • I'm so familiar with Sega's packaging that there is absolutely no reason for me watching this video either than pure entertainment.

  • Was fireshark made by THE Dreamworks?

  • Stella! Say Strider!!!

  • i fucking cracked up when you made that joke about the strider artwork. Man, mark, your show beats out any shit you see on g4 any day.

  • stella is so awesome

  • review zero wing.

  • "How about a WALK?"

  • 16-bit Walk= Greatest video game ever made.

  • you have a very cute Dog ^_^

  • I like cartridges a lot more than CDs/DVDs/GD-roms because they are so much less fragile. With CDs, if it just gets a scratch or to, it's permanantly damaged, however, I could scratch my name into a cartridge with a knife and it would work perfectly. Also, cartridges don't need boxes/cases to keep them safe (it is cool to keep them though because of the awesome box art).

  • It adds an element of collecting, especially with genesis games, I love the cases for genesis games. My mind was blown when I got Shinobi and Sparkster for genesis with the cases, hot damn

  • @crazyzach5 I know, they should have kept the cartridge concept today, but CDs hold alot of space on them. But on a cd, scratch it, and its dead.

  • @crazyzach5 yeah, but that's also less space and in this day and age, cartridges are unacceptable for new systems.

also, blu-ray is currently the format with the most space and is almost as durable as cartridges

  • @highwaysonyfan87 it isnt just nostalgia, nostalgia actually plays very, very little in his reviews and opinions as he evidently has NEVEr stopped playing these old games....and neither have i...how can one be nostalgic about something they havent been away from?

the fact that he still plays them, means he truely likes the games and what he says about them, is his honest opinion as the nostalgia isnt there to cloud over the bad qualities of the game and make him forget about them

  • @Amaranthus616 as he does say what he doesnt like about a game, as well as what he does like about it. if there is any nostalgia involved, its pretty small as the games he played in their release days....he obviously hasnt stopped playing when you watch the reviews you come to notice this

and you dont need to despise him, thats way too extreme...if you dont like, fair enough...but to despise? guy just likes to have fun

  • @crazyzach5 that is so true. cartridges ftw

  • @crazyzach5 love them because they are so bulky! The n64 ones are just as heavy as a rock, it's amazing.

  • strider at 2:28 looks like he is constipated

  • damn, how could I forget to buy 16-bit walk for sega genesis. I KNEW I was missing a game when I still had the genesis.

  • Never seen a dead Sega Genesis cart?

    I, for one, have 2.

    Decapattack (Replaced) and Ms. Pac-Man

  • I miss this old consoles

    these were great .

  • I got Spider-Man for Genesis. Didn't work. Cleaned it. Stil didn't work. Swapped it for NFL Quarterback Club and Battletoads for Game Boy.

  • I can put up a fight in NHL Hockey. Great game.

  • "16-Bit Walk"

I'VE GOT TO BUY THAT GAME! LOL :D

  • I'd buy a game called CYBORG JUSTICE.

  • Strider: according to the art on the cartidge, you play as a purple-spandex ponce who enjoys fencing and sipping ginger tea. High adventure away!

  • But when you play it, instead you get one of the best Genesis games in existence! I need a copy.

  • I'm aware of that. I was just pointing out how horrible the cartridge art is.

  • "is your FAVORITE GENESIS GAME GOING FOR A WALK", The Dog is like "NO WAY"

  • i gotta agree. amazing craftmanship all around for sega. mines actually hooked up and just waiting for me to play xmen 2 clone wars. not one problem with it in about 20 years

  • loved the dog part :)

  • This console, the cartridges and the packaging are quite robust. That's quality!

  • COOL DOG, 16-bit walk LOL

  • "You might think were a bunch of idiots, but were about to sink to an all knew low".

    That was really funny.

  • I love the fact that you used Heavy Nova as the WALK cartridge! That game was horrible...

  • Accolade and EA made unlicensed games at first, hence the different carts

  • Yeah. I have The Original John Madden Football! (Not NFL.)

  • yeah, u should mention the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge (actually i own one of theese) :D

  • You compared Genesis Cartridges to Odyssey 2 and Atari but not Intellivision. or Colecovision.

Also what about SNES carts, 32X and N64 carts?

  • heh were i live its called the mega drive... crazy americans and your wierd vidio game names

  • Well it's not like we named the console....Sega couldn't secure the right to the name Mega Drive in America, so they had to name it Genesis.

  • there was something already called the mega drive so we had to call it somthing, genesis sounds cool too

  • "Going for a walk?" the look on the dogs face is priceless

  • why are the ea company carts different i dont beleve shaq fu deserves a different cart

  • Unlike Nintendo, SEGA allowed game publishers to use there own cartridges. Only EA and Codemasters did, as it was generally more expensive to do so.

  • The Sonic & Knuckles cart was awesome.

  • The Sonic & Knuckles cart was indeed great, but the box was crappy cardboard and the cartridge itself is impossible to stack... having said that it probably deserves a bit of space to itself anyway because it's such a great game :)

  • The Sonic & Knuckles cartridge reminds me a little of the 32x cartridges. =S

  • Yep,forgot mentioning that too.Somehow when I was little I used to mistake the SVP cartridge with the European SNES cartridge(I had one of those too,I used to mistake VR with it by its design-light grey, curved lines- :P)

  • from what i've seen mega drive cartridges from PAL and japan are different from genesis cartridges

  • Nope, there exactly the same. You may be getting confused with the SNES, which did have a different cartridge and console design between regions.

  • The NES cartridge is scary!!! The japanese Famicom carts were similar size to the megadrive, perhaps a bit smaller. Russian/Chinese/Brazilian Dendy carts were the same as Famicom. Review them someday?

  • i had a large library idk wat happened to it = (

  • By the way, Sega used a different design for Virtua Racing which supposely had a SVP-chip in there...

  • A huge cart indeed.

  • Don't forget that there was even another design for the SEGA Genesis Cartridge, you can see for example the LOTUS racing games or ROAD RASH II,it has another design.

  • The cases were far superior to todays consolegame-cases. The Megadrive-cases actually protected the game. This while the CD's/DVD's are more likely to damage, but when you drop the cd-cases, they are likely to break.

  • Does anybody know why Sega choose to use different names for the system for Europe and the US/Japan (resp. Megadrive/Genesis)?

  • In Japan they called it the Sega MegaDrive but the name MegaDrive was already trademarked in the 'States so they had to use a different name. They used Genesis. It's still called MegaDrive in Europe and I think in Oz. Only in the US is it called the Genesis. Perhaps in Canada too

  • Ok, thanx 4 the info...

  • I wish I was old enough to have owned a 16-bit console.

  • haha whenever i accidently say walk, my dog get sso exited i feel guilty if i don't give him one.

  • alright a 16-bit walk!

  • Sega had the best case at that time, they actually were protective and covered the entire game. Till..they went to cardboard.

  • I hated when that happened. The cardboard boxes were weak and did last that long, even if you took care of them

  • I still have Sonic and Knuckles, Phantasy Star IV, and Beyond Oasis. They still LOOK good but unfortunately they don't hold the game too well.

  • CGRHD reviews frosted flakes.

  • The only Reason it's call the Sega genesis in the U.S it's Because the Name Mega Drive was already copyrighted by another company.

  • 16bit era was the best video gaming era.

  • The Strider art-work also has Warhammer 40,000 Space Marines in the background, literally identical to some the models they used to have in the early 90's. I only noticed that a few weeks ago; the artist involved must have been pretty lazy - I bet he never thought he'd get found out!

  • Damn, how did I miss out on 16 bit walk?! I knew something felt off when I was playing my Sega Genesis the other day, but I just kinda brushed it off. Now I know why I felt so strange, cuz I don't own 16 bit walk!

Anyhow Fantastic Dizzy had a unique cartridge shape as well. It was more rounded than your standard Genesis cart and was a little smaller too.

  • "Anyhow Fantastic Dizzy had a unique cartridge shape as well. It was more rounded than your standard Genesis cart and was a little smaller too."

Yea. But all megadrive games made by Codemasters looked like that. I've only seen Codemasters and EA with weird designs, none else.

  • Yeah that was the only one I had, actually and it wasn't mentioned in the review (Codemasters games).

I thought of another one that could be considered. It was called Mike Dikta's Power Football by Accolade. I can't post a link to the cartridge here, but it looks like a slightly larger EA cart and it had some ridges at the top.

That game came out in 1991 I think.

  • "I thought of another one that could be considered. It was called Mike Dikta's Power Football by Accolade. I can't post a link to the cartridge here, but it looks like a slightly larger EA cart and it had some ridges at the top.

Damn yes i forgot about that, i got Pele by Accolade but i forgot about its weird cart design. Exactly how you describe it :P. The Accolade ones look like the Codemasters design except kinda ridged. I'm gonna record these designs

  • I saw a game at my local hobby shop that reminded me of another oddly shaped game. Virtua Racing! The cartridge is freaking huge!!! Such a big cart for such a bad game though. I haven't played it since it came out but I thought it was just horrible then.

  • "I saw a game at my local hobby shop that reminded me of another oddly shaped game. Virtua Racing! The cartridge is freaking huge!!! Such a big cart for such a bad game though. I haven't played it since it came out but I thought it was just horrible then."

Oh i have that one :P, but the size was to fit the virtua processor thing in, i think, not another company's crazy cartridge design. Game sucks like you said, but nice music :P

  • i hope they remake walk for the ps3 and 360 :D good video

  • i had fire shark on my genesis and i hated the cart it was soo white that i colored it m self...lol

  • i liked n64 games a lot better

  • ya estas bien viejo y sigues jugando consolas, eso dejanolos a nosotros los jovenes

  • I allways thought that the longer carts with the yellow thingy were games that had a memory chip inside?

  • I luved the Sega Genesis, but I with stupidity sold it in a garage sale, when I get a bank account, I am finally getting it back, and also getting the attachments!

  • MUSHA!

  • Awesome review. Genesis was my first console and I love it better than my PS2. The cases are really durable, but then they switch to cardboard cases and wasn't very good to protect cases

  • i love these new reviews, a refreshing take on things most people take for granted in the retro gaming community. oddly interesting.

    kudos
