i'm not sure if you people realize this or not but man did not create fossil fuels, it is a natural part of this earth, even your giant stupid fucking banner is the result of fossil fuels, the device you recorded this with, more fucking oil. green peace used to mean something, now its a bunch of vegan pussies who try to run the world like a dictatorship and tell everyone else how bad they are when they themselves are just as wrong as they claim everybody else is. FUCK GREEN PEACE.
@anarchosolar thomas edison worked in the field of electrical inventions, of course he wanted electricity to trump oil, and when you talk about electric cars you seem to forget that other then the fuel the entire car is made with fucking petroleum, the keyboard you are typing on is made with petroleum, solar panels are made and shipped with petroleum and coal your shoes, your clothes, the paint on your walls, and all the wiring in your electrical devices are made with oil, your a fucking clown.
It is a good thing " Vivian Krause' is in to research. Look for her interviews on Youtube. American foundations have payed over $90 million to promote their own Amarican industries. Millions of that money went to so-called grassroots protests in western Canada. Why didn't these foundations put any money to enviromental action in the Gulf of Mexico, on the eastren seaboard or the Alaskan coast? Perhaps they may have been better off watching thier own envronment
those green hippies should be shot for trespassing onto there land and interfering with oil production, hire some private military contractors, i love oil and i love my suv
Was at the Anti-Harper protest in Ottawa yesterday... A great step towards raising public awareness here in Canada... Thanks to all who came out in support!
Take to the streets and participate in The International Day of Action Against Tar Sands on June 18th.
Individuals working together towards a common goal can make a difference! Stand united and let your voice be heard.
I install and maintain solar systems, it is not worth while going solar, it costs more money than its worth and if they shut down the oil sands canada would have a huge problem, oilsands supports canada, deal with it!
U USAmericans are the biggest PEST in the world. You are using still cars which running on 10 gallons per 100 miles and wonder why you have to bring the war all over the world, just to steal Oil of another peoples soil....may your sons die for that in Irak and whereever else you Asslickers of EXXON and Donald Rumpsfeld....your comments here show that the joos are succesfull in keeping your education LOW...very low ...IDIOTS
After the area is complete, the oil companies are already obligated to reclaim the land. One of the better ideas is to reintroduce Bison to the area and restore the land to its former beauty. yes it wil take 25 years to be fixed, its more than Greenpeace will ever spend.
The TAR SANDS is the single most ECOCIDAL industry on the planet. The mentality
behind the Tar Sands is end of civilisation. This is how Canada's Greenhouse gas emissions have INCREASED 45% since signing Kyoto. Those who back it are morons
@sanacore2011 You are the moron. To think that this is the end of civilization is just stupid. The oil sands are what brings immigrants to canada so they can have a decent living and also provides thousands of Canadians with good paying jobs. It also is our largest source of income and if it was shut down would lead to an eventual depression for us. Not to forget that we need oil because solar , wind and water cannot sustain us forever.
jobless greenpeace loosers wont accomplish shit, how bout you work with the companies to make the process in extracting safer? no thats to easy they would rather bitch and cry about it than actually do somthing
Oil is a great energy source but the drawbacks are too horrible, we can make energy from thin air but we arent allowed to. Oil should be saved for it's chemical uses which theres no replacement. we don't need to use so much for energy, its a myth
there are environmental concerns, which must be addressed. how did you tree huggers get to the site? oh, fosil fuel burning helicopter! hmmm. case closed. hypocrites!
i am doing a project for school and i just want to know what people are doing as solution's to the tar sands i already know what people think about the tar sands
all i want is a good grade will someone answer my question
i am doing a project for school and i just want to know what people are doing as solution's to the tar sands i already know what people think about the tar sands
all i want is a good grade will someone answer my questoin
do you have any idea what the impact of closing down the oil sands would be? hundreds of thousands of people would lose their jobs! is greenpeace ready to hire them and pay the same wages as suncor and shell?
@vehlajatt22 Yes they would lose jobs that are NOT defendable and sustainable. So instead they can be retrained to build a Wind and Solar energy infrastructure from large scale to community level. They can be converted millions of cars into electric cars as part of a mass conversion project to use the vehicles we already have as the resource for new EV culture. USE YOUR IMAGINATION. There are FAR MORE JOBS and there is FAR MORE WEALTH to be
achieved by ENDING THE OIL REGIME than by keeping it.
@sanacore2011 So how good does this solar power, wind power work as opposed to oil?? How much Co2 is expelled out of the coal mines just west of Washington DC?? All of these ideas will come to pass, its just not feasable as of yet. And the cost of all these Wonder machines that dont work will come directly out of the taxpayer, however most of us will be living in a crashed market and will be unable to afford these things. So you are living in fantasyland my friend.
@1hotfred You are living in a sick and criminal fantasy that burning dead things instead of powering the world with living things is more sustainable. There is loads of sun and other energies to power the world even at twice the population. There is however no chance of this insane status quo functioning with an expanding populace without major disasters both social and environmental. PART 1
@anarchosolar How do you know? And who are you to say that we have enough power without oil. Tell me why companies are still buying oil if they could just use wind, solar and water you idiot. We dont have enough power without the tar sands. Get your facts straight before you blab about things you dont know anything about. We are much more sustainable with oil. You are the one living a fantasy.
@kannenjo THAT IS THE EQUIVALENT OF SAYING YOU NEED CRACK TO SUSTAIN YOU instead of kicking drugS and eating organic food. The USA has the capacity to install enough solar and wind to cover all your needs. The Great Plains can be the Saudi Arabia of Wind. Dissolve the CHEVRON OIL Patent on the Electric car battery that put Panasonic's superb NimH battery in a prison for 10yrs and you will be driving ALL ELECTRIC with 600 to 1200 mile range within 4 to 5 years. CHEVRON knows it hence the patent.
@anarchosolar Once again you have no facts. You dont know they have the capacity to install solar and wind energy generators. I know the canadian government cannot afford it and the US sure as hell can not. And your first statement does not relate because oil is helping our economy and lifestyle and drugs dont. I also think its funny that you keep talking about this when I guarentee you drive a motorized vehicle.
@kannenjo I DO KNOW THE FACTS the UNITED STATES has an EMPIRE OF OVER 700 MILITARY BASES AROUND THE WORLD...wasting tens of times the cost of what it would take to transform the energy sector.
The cost of oil is vast beyond the pump in ways that idiots like you cannot understand !!
@anarchosolar Its funny how everyone is against you and you call me an idiot. Just give it up man. But it doesnt matter. You can believe whatever you want to. And blame whoever you want to because the tar sands are going nowhere and you know it.
@1hotfred PART 2 Every building home and skyscraper can be a solar energy generating
entity. We can convert millions of cars to go 1000miles on a single electric charge the science is there sadly the biggest obstacle is Chevron Oil's patent on the electric car battery they are holding back the entire progress of humanity for their gangster control.
@anarchosolar So how do you intend to charge all these vehicles? How do we build the batteries cleanly? Where do we dispose of them? I guess we could build a few nuclear plants and thousands of coal fire plants. The solar output is not there, and will not be for some time. The fanatasy idea of solar power is about as realistic as the flying cars we were supposed to be using by 2000. Pollution is bad, this co2 thing is a myth. If its us causing global warming, explain the temperature on mars?
@1hotfred ok first of all there is a huge scientific community that believes and has evidence of global war second everything we do that we believe causes global warming still hurts the even if it didn't cause global warming third right now were seeing a new generation of cars that are extremely efficient fourth solar power alone my not be enough but we also have water and wind which would be able to take a huge burden off of the need for power
@TheWhiteOp You sir should watch the movie The Great Global Swindle, a huge amount of the scientific community also reject the theory of Global warming.... I mean climate change.(of course the sheeple will accuse them of being paid by the big Oil) .....Back in my teens we were told the world was going into an ice age. People like Al Gore are becoming very rich from this BS lie.
@vehlajatt22 Canadian produces some of the world's finest high-speed rail and other public transportational vehicles though rarely seen in Canada it is other countries that buy them....that is one sector you could work in.
EV battery development is another. Solar and Wind is another. Sustainable and ecological building design and construction is another.
ok if our oil is dirty dont buy it. how bout we cut off our trade with america. i know they wouldnt like that. green peace suck ass and they dont know shit. dip shits
Lets try to grasp the concept of power. People want power, some more then others. Power comes with money. The biggest money generating industry in the wolrd= energy/Oil. By luck, there is a lot in Alberta. Who has the most power in canada = the governement and private oil industries. Who wants to be more powerfull= them. At the cost of others. Albertas entire social structure is corrupt by the money comming from oil. People have money = comfort = indiference= dont want tosee the big picture.
To all the lovers of tarsands: stop volunteering, go out and get a job with an oil company's marketing dept., BP, Exxonmobil, Total etc. have billions of dollars and i'm sure they could afford and would love, to pay sheep to constantly criticize the criticizers. Make sure you work hard to explain how stupid people are if they want to change our country. Hurray for Oil, look how great it is for the gulf of Mexico!
@crazyfarm31 Funnier part is, the worlds dirtiest people, made the worlds dirtiest ocean (with oil) and one of the most enormous if not THE most enormous, man made disaster ever on earth!
Yes im talking about the hilarity of the (cast BLACK iron) pot calling the (clean porcelain) kettle black after the Gulf of Mexico volcano they ruptured! What a bunch of raging lunatics we share this continent with. At least Mexico isnt next door to us too, damn that would be... not good...
@crazyfarm31 we have clean energy... but do u see a lot of people buying electric cars? hydrogen cars? No? Thats whats wrong. Oil companies sort of brainwash everyone to keep buying oil... u could buy clean energy if u want search it on google
@Illkiron electric , we could never use electric in canada i would love to see it run in -45 weather, what about semies ect that haul heavy equipment...oh wait there would be no more heavy equipment ect...i also love how green peace pulled up on the job site with there umm...F250's AHAHAHAHAHAH let me guess it doesnt need oil??....it just isnt realistic ...so the tar sands is dirty...but wtf isnt theses days????
@crazyfarm31 I'm not canadian, so unfortunately I dont have a clean solution for your country, but I bet that there is a good solution. The problem is that: Oil Industry rules over whether a clean energy will arise or no.
@Illkiron Electric and hybrid cars are massive polluters. Battery production uses massive resource as well as eventual disposal. Hydrogen requires electricity to separate water/methanol even urine. Every hybrid car uses 30-50 barrels of oil over a standard car to produce. Paint/batteries/steel etc. Walking also uses oil. Humans require food. Look at food production and oil needed for farming etc. So unless you grow enough without buying elsewhere you contribute to the "problem".
@YiuTeub But mate, there are solutions for all these things you've listed. If you google you will see how many types of clean energy can be used for all sorts of things. There are air-moved cars, toilets w/o water that can extract energy from your poo, and a whole lot of other things that may seem crazy, but in fact if were mass produced would end our reliance in the burning of fossil fuels. But while the big oil companies (that "rule" the world) don't change we (the avarege person) can't change
@Illkiron Air moved cars rely on what to power them? I know exactly what your talking about but the compressed air happens through what eventually is oil or coal or something of that nature. The toilet thing is something Im building into my new house. Not getting methane from the poop though but composting it. Methane happens when there is no Oxygen to decompose the material. Fossils are used in drugs too. I think dirty process is a bad thing but like everything theres a learning curve.
@YiuTeub you can use solar and wind power to compress air or make hydrogen quite easily. I'd do it myself except it's illegal to compress hydrogen. guess who paid to make that law? oil companies. Imagine if you had a hydrogen plant in your back yard that made small amounts for your own use or to compress air for an air driven city car. the problem is Hydrogen needs to be compressed to make it useful in a vehicle unless you want a huge gas bag on the roof of your vehicle.
for all the people that agree with tar sands projects or oil usage in general are mugs. we need an alternative so life can continue on this planet, i hope end of this empire will come while im alive so i can witness all the fools go insane whilst me and like minded folk kick back and laff before we all perish. lmao
Have you seen the documentary called 'the Death of the Electric Car'? I suggest watching it, before you tout green technology as being more expensive than dirty technology.
I understand that improvements must be made for green tech, but if our governments used their federal powers to do this, rather than sleeping with Big Oil, things would improve. But it all comes down to the cheques the government get for supporting Big Oil. :)
RESPECT to Greenpeace. People that stand up for this type of destruction to our planet should be rewarded. All you other short-sighted apes can fuck off.
@howie3147@howie3147 Dont you find it funny that they where using a fucking helicopter that was sucking fuel most likely made from the oil sands to protest?? No i didn't think so you fucking hippie because your tree bark eating parents obviously where siblings, that's the only way i can think that you obviously have no brain to think on your own. If you don't live in a cave and eat grass then you are a hypocritical cock sucker!! Fuck hippies like you are dumb!
@blambo35 - You really are dumb aren't you. Is everybody a hippie in your world? There is nothing hypocritical about it. I drive a Benz and 2 trucks. Yes I need oil. And if I saw you on the street I would run your little faggot body over until your tiny brain popped out your earhole. IT IS THE WAY THE OIL IS MADE! YOU FUCKING RETARD. Now run away you little fag. Obtain some knowledge before you continue making dumb replies and make yourself look like the ignorant asshole you always were.
@howie3147 anybody that talks about running people over on the internet is an idiot, seriously, beat someone with intelect, not with little pussy threats you'd never do in the real world.
howie, the pretentious 'tough guy'... better watch out, howie's going to threaten you and question your sexuality if you disagree with him because that's how smart he really is.
@howie3147 "People that stand up for this type of destruction to our planet should be rewarded. All you other short-sighted apes can fuck off."
So, the people who stand up, FOR this type of destruction to our planet should be rewarded? The ones who defend this type of destruction? The ones who support it? They should be rewarded? And you just finished typing "RESPECT to Greenpeace"
You are so blind, materialistic consumer automoton. Keep your eye out for the next bandwagon that comes ur way
Budnuggett, congrats upon your higher ethical morals than everybody in Alberta. It is great that you no longer use any petroleum products. I am sure you put your money where you mouth is and invested you time , energy and money into solar energy, wind power and alternative energy. If you didn't shame on you.... you hypercritical asshole.
The gulf of Mexico don't look so good either, oil is dirty so get over it and we all need it. Greenpeace put you money where your mouth and wake up from behind your hypercritical illusion of superior morals by demanding that your members don't use any products which are a product of oil. Yes you are just as dirty as the rest of us.
I liken the GoM disaster as a 50+ year slow oil leak. Sure, it's getting LOADS of attention because it's all at once and the media is focusing on it, but when the tar sands are polluting underground/above ground water resources, fresh water mind you, that is already so rare, you have to wonder "is this a good idea?". The oil is unconventional for a reason, requiring so much energy to extract a resource that's already depleted and dirty. We are addicted to power.
Here's the BIGGEST concern, for hardcore eco-folk AND ignorant albertans who think that money and lifted pickups are all that matter.....water. It takes 6 cubic meters of FRESH WATER to create 1 cubic meter of synthetic crude oil to ship to the states. Where does the water come from? The Athabasca River. Oil won't be the most precious commodity very soon!
@budnuggett 6 cubic meters eh? So you are saying it takes 6 barrels of fresh water to produce one barrel of oil?? FUCK YOU YOU PICE OF SHIT. Next time you post anything on the Internet do a little research, or you just sound like a fucking retard. You are a fucking piece of shit. Do you know how to read because only a fucking illiterate, inbred, tree bark eating hippie would post something so fucking dumb on the Internet. Do a little research you cock sucking hippie.
@sasktank Boy your smart! Think about the whole picture, the whole process, about monocropping, about the species and nature that will be disturbed prior to the largest reclamation project ever to occur and we assume that this may be sucessful?
how much fuel did you burn in your helicopter fuck-tarts??? cause it came from syncrude of suncor...you are such fucking hero's are'nt you!!! Why don't you come down to the oil can and explain your position on franklin ave to the men and women who feed their families from the oilsands...cause you are guttless coward punks who know an oilsands worker will kick your hippy ass for endangering his families means of survival...come on down i dare you...oilcan, franklin ave ft mac...chickenshits.
greenpeace is a useless organization that accomplishes nothing but make canadians look bad, even though greenpeace is notorious for renting Hummers, boats, and planes to get to there destinations, fuck you greenpeace, i grew up in fort mcmurray and ur making it look like everyone living there is a gas guzzling asshole, i love my country, i love my province, i love my town, i dont care what you say, we are good people, the people that are doing bad is YOU, fuck off u dont know what ur doing!
Go get an education and create a green energy, then put the oil companies out of buisness, stopp smoking dope and do something C-O-N-S-T-R-U-C-T-I-V-E with your lives!!! Shove your "HEMP" up your......
@stewienb Hemp fuel is green energy old timer. Ford made his first car run off hemp fuel. It costs nothing to make, it doesn't release any harmful chemical or toxin into the atmosphere that causes smog, mass pollution, and deaths. Just because someone is advocating on the bahalf of Hemp, does not mean they are a dope smoker. Honestly, don't be so naive.
@imperiocorrupto Well since hemp fuel if free, then why isnt everyone using it? Who is producting it for free? Where can i get it? where is is grown, produced and distributed? So if it burns, then it 100% clean huh? Even natural gas or propane is not 100% clean. The beauty of capitolism and the free market is that anyone is free to compete with their ideas that would rival any energy sector. Funny that it is not in wide scale production.
@stewienb there already is green energy, the oil companies discredit and murder even to suppress it, they even pressure lawmakers to make it illegal to take advantage of renewable energy. They have skyscrapers full of lawyers to accomplish this because they have all the money. no I don't smoke dope btw
@SerpentSlayer1 Lol I like that. I once seen a show about some hippie girl crying about the oil sand destroying the earth. Yet she drove up to them in a SUV along with the camera crew and there SUVs and then flew over them in a plane. It actually made me laugh.
help the issue by helping the oil company's in research and development of cleaner ways of extraction, refining, and reclamation of the process. HELP the issue insted of doing mindless yelling. Get an education and engineer better ways. its the best way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. and the tailings never leave the site... water never reaches the river or tributaries. the river naturally erodes the banks which are oilsand. its natural oil in the river.. not caused by companies.
insted of trying to shutdown the oilsand mines in fort mcmurray,, why dosent greenpeace try to help in development of cleaner ways to extract, process and reclamation. tailings never leave the sites.. the dyke system is so intence and massive.. it will never fail. and there are fail safe measures built in. the athabaska runs through tarsand naturally.. so.. cant' blame the company's for water pollution in the athabaska river, tributaries or downstream lakes.
Hmmm... I wonder how they got to Ft. McMurray? Did they drive cars that run on happy thoughts? Greenpeace are a bunch of hypocritical douchebags. The water coming out of that pip has water, silt, dirt, and a trace amount of hydrocarbons and is not allowed to leave the plantsite.
You should really watch the Power of Nightmares. First al-Qaeda, next global warming. Politicians use fear to keep people engaged. Otherwise, they might just pursue their own rational self-interest.
Brilliant and also true. People in power (politicians) can and do motivate individuals using fear. People in power wishing to recruit individual willing to die for a cause, might tell them scary stories about the evil being spread world wide by the capitalist west. (Just an example.) The people that respond to irrational fear can only be those who do not have access or the ability to know the truth. You obviously do. Now how can you help those that do not?
kinawierdohead is not a hippie. The youth movement that you are refer to was born in the USA in the early 60's. Started by young people about your age but back then. Young adult that were about to inherit a wold run by adult that was behaving in a way that motivated them to change it. Do you see anything in your modern world you would like changed?
Greenpeace are highlighting an internal stream. They might as well pick on any pipe in a chemical plant or a refinery and say the stream is dirty. Surprise surprise. This dirty stream is going to be processed further. Why aren't they highlighting the discharge to the river? Because it is clean.
The more I learn about the Oil Sands Project the more I feel ashamed that this environmental disaster is unfolding in my own country, Canada. I want to be proud of this country. I want to be part of a nation that finds a way to include things like clean air and fresh water in the capitalist profit models that currently bring projects like this to life. What is our natural environment worth?
I do heat my home in the winter. What alternative is the market offering me? Surely I am not the only one that would like to live without creating an environmental disaster.
I've been thinking the same thing. Somehow oil gets all of the blame, yet coal is not much better. If anything, we have IMPROVED things over our ancestors. They chopped down much of Northern Europe's forests to stay warm. We don't have to do that.
That is a good point. All the more reason for Canada to lead the way and show the world that we can do better. If they follow what we have done so far in North America then you are correct the wold is doomed.
If you asked a man on the street I am sure they would want clean air and clean water. Just like us they are stuck living in the world they inherited. And just like you they feel like they are powerless to make a difference.
Nobody wants that. How about a little pain now rather than a lot of pain later when we run out of oil. Seems to me we will have a difficult time producing what the world needs without it. Since the end of oil will not happen in our lifetime we need not concern ourselves with the issue?
It is a issue a huge issue it will be 300 dollars a barrel within 5 years. We need as much as we can get. Oil isn't going to run out altogther but it will become expensive and limited.
The concept or idea of peak oil is real when considered within the human time scale. When considered within the time scale of a planet then you are correct. I am sure this old girl with shrug us off at some point as she has done with so many other species that thrived before modern man. Then she will be able to get back to the long process of producing more light sweet crude!
If it were true about global warming, then yes. But it's not true. The real issues are things like water and air quality. China is very, very poor on those issues. But they are hurting themselves and possibly the ocean, too. But the global warming thing is a scam.
our oil not only fuels their helecopter. but it also made that rubber suit and plastic banner they are sportin. and also their ink. so if were gona take these goofs seriously they should start wearin natural shit like leaves a tree bark haha, fucken hipocrits
wow...tailing ponds...what do you want....dump waste into a river...grab a brain!!..using the internet is contradictory to the cause...but i guess it's a necessary evil..electricity and plastic products..hey?? the oil sands are mankinds necessary evil...living in alberta and knowing it's not a "toxic cesspool" allows me to defend a national industry that does far more to conserve the environment (canada) that most everyone else combined!! kyoto should apply to the worst offenders...not us!!
I guarantee you drove to this site, fueled by gasoline.
Also, what you're showing is a tailings pond. The shit coming out of that pipe is mostly water and sand. And the pond is internally lined so there's no leaks.
mostly water and sand? I beg to differ. Especially since that if it was just water and sand, the sand would sink to the bottom and the water would float up top. But for some reason 511 ducks died in a tailings pond last year... don't think water and sand do that.
Also, the materials in tailings ponds are well documented to be corrosive and extremely toxic. But if you think all it is is just sand and water, I suppose you would have no problem in going up there and taking a swim in it yourself.
So are you suggesting that the product that was on the ground previously was not toxic? If i gave you one handful of sand soaked in oil and one handful of sand with traces of oil which one would be more toxic? So arnt the company's cleaning up a huge oil spill? you should be grateful!!
As for the ducks how many are killed in cities in Canada each year? i will guarantee you it is way more than the oil sands ever will!
Never suggested that now did I? Only a moron would think otherwise. And only a moron would think that the slurry of waste in the tailings ponds is less harmful to the environment than it really is. Now I got a question for you, are you suggesting that the tar sands (NOT oil sands, call them what they really are) are this environmentally friendly establishment? Because with the ducks comment, it sounds like you couldn't care less. So, you support chopping down a forest the size of Florida?
No I'm just pointing out they hypocritical stance of all these "environmental protectors" They say that the companies are chopping down this pristine forest that I DO LIVE IN but turn around and live in a building made out of wood from this pristine forest..... kinda odd don't you think? Then they talk about toxins yet they clean their shitter with bleach, drive there car, fertilize their lawn, take daily HOT showers (do you shower more than 2 times a week?) then talk about a company being bad?
And then I guess you support that after they chop all those trees down, they process the tar sands by taking three barrels of water from one of the largest freshwater basins in North America just to process one barrel of useable oil? It is funny because it sounds like you're supporting a place in Canada that has 10% of Canada's population yet accounts for 40% of total greenhouse emissions produced by Canada.
Once again they cry for these trees yet live in a house built of wood, read the paper, have wood furniture, live in a city that riped up a forest to accommodate it ect ect. Then they Have a hot shower for 10 minutes and rinse chemicals down the drain while they waste water..... like come on fix your own back yard. And suggesting that Alberta generates 40% of GHG emissions is a retarded argument.
It sounds like the only reason you care about this project is that it creates jobs. So what, funding renewable energy developments doesn't? I mean, for example someone has to manufacture wind generators. Someone has to maintain wind generators. Someone has to monitor these wind generators. So if you if you think for a second that shutting down the project will force us to lose jobs, it will only do so for a short term period. Jobs will be created to take its place.
What about all the birds killed by these generators? what about the iron ore mines that yes have tailings ponds what about the furnaces that burn A LOT of power to produce the iron to produce the wind mill. Alberta already has a shit load of wind generation and building more all the time, but I'm sorry the world will need oil for a long time to come
You're looking at the thing as if to say that currently there is no better solution. You keep looking at the death count of birds which I will agree that either way, wind energy, or oil, will kill birds. But which one in the long-term, emits far less pollution? I never heard of a wind generator that created a tailings pond before. Never heard of a wind generator that needed to take out a whole forest and drive out all the wildlife that used the forest as their habitat.
How many thousand square miles would that take up? and how many open pit mines would it take to create. Or if its in Ontario is that ok? (assuming you from there) The fact remains the world will need prtro for a long time to come and you cannot argue against that. How do you heat your home in the winter please answer that for me, And tell me how many showers a week???????????
We have a solar generator plopped on our roof. Cost us about $20,000. It's is on its way to paying itself off in the next 8-10 years. Completely self sufficient. Sorry.
I'm from Alberta. The fact is is that the world has the technology to be self sufficient, but because fossil fuels are apparently the ones giving people jobs, that's why we have the tar sands. But I would imagine that jobs would be created to manufacture wind turbines, to maintain them, the fix them, and to monitor them... I mean it's not like they can magically appear. We need labor to build those too.
Still i don't see them protesting the logging that i see near my home everyday in the boreal forest. Yet if they do in the oil sands they cry fowl? The logs end up in the same place in the end if you didn't know. In your home so you can stay warm in the winter thanx to you gas furnace. As for wind turbines have you been to pincher creek Alberta? I have many times its a eye soar. If we wanted nothing but wind power it would take WAY more land than the oil sands and drive off just as many critters
Are you kidding me? Wind turbines you don't need to stick in a forested area in the first place. You have the option of sticking them in the middle of a field. And you're telling me that wind turbines will destroy more land than the oil sands? The oil sands project at its peak will cover an area the size of Florida. Don't think Alberta needs that much area for wind generators as a single generator can power up to 5,000 homes. How much land does a single turbine take up? Not a heck of a lot.
Well I am assuming you live in a wood house and that timber probably came from my favorite camping sight, your welcome by the way. And you obviously haven't been to pincher creek it takes up A LOT of land not counting the service roads to every turbine. And you obviously don't know what in situe extraction is, do some research please gust google it prity cool stuff.
You're favorite camping site? Where would that be? Way to assume things again. I hope I don't have to point out what assuming does. And yes, obviously my house is mostly made of wood. But I've partaken in planting trees, so I suppose that my little bit of environmental damage has been covered. Can you say the same? We've also added more trees to our lot than were there. And I guess every environmentalist is a hypocrite to you. What would it take to be a true environmentalist? Live in a lean to?
Well a lean to would kill trees lol. All I'm trying to say that its soooo easy to point a finger then turn a blind eye. Aka i suggest you should shower once a week What do you want to know where i live u psycho lol. My favorite camp, well it WAS along the berland river which is now nothing but a giant clear cut. But sorry the oil sands will be around for your children to work at. O and since you live in Alberta it must be mighty cold at your place in the winter or does a sweater do?
Camping and living are two different things. A lean to can be constructed with trees and branches that were already dead and lying on the ground in the first place. And by the way, in 2002, tar sands emitted 3.6% of total emissions. And that was just 2002. I wonder what it is today.
Solar power is primarily used for our heating and lighting. Sorry, but it's actually not too bad here. So I guess to answer your question, my thermostat read 20 degrees.
Sorry but replanting trees doesn't do much to replace the trees one has consumed. It's a good idea, but it just doesn't make up for the natural processes that make up a diverse forest and ecoystem.
Situ extraction requires 2-4.5 cubic meters of water to produce one cubic meter of oil. And yes, they recycle water and reuse it and can potentially bring it down to about 0.2 cubic meters of water per cubic meter of oil. But it also notes that the extraction process uses about 1 billion cubic feet of natural gas, making the tar sands one of the eight largest polluters in the world. Canada signed Kyoto and has never once met its target of 6% annual emissions.
for fuck sake if you bash something the least you can do is not use a fucking mode of transportation that is fueld by the very thing your bashing.......dumbass
I am shocked and disapointed at how many people on here are bashing Greenpeace. It's not like they are out to rape the envionment for short term finnacial gain. Their mission to protect our natural environment is for EVERYONE's well being! Why aren't Canada's petroleum reserves run by government(Such as Norway) where EVERYONE benifits? Yes it employs people, but so do greener industries and energy systems(that don't run out and leave a toxic wasteland).
Open your eyes Canada, we are just getting started down a dangerous path! Why defend the multinational corporations, they buy the best PR firms and politcians money can buy. As for the working families, they don't give 2 sh*ts about you, and will throw you away when the $ is all gone!
We (Council of Canadians)are now calling the tailing 'ponds' what they really are -'toxic reservoirs'. The corporate description tailing 'ponds' imply that these man made reservoirs are small in scale & naturally formed. Nothing is further than the truth. They are toxic reservoirs within the most destructive project on Earth.
Greenpeace itself is probably the biggest threat to our environment because they act as demegogues instilling fear and spreading misinformation instead of informed people working towards practical solutions.
the funny part of that is the water pouring out of that pipe next to the banner is clean water. There is a ground water run off ditch surrounding the dyke and the water gets pumped back into the dyke. The small flags are at the end of spill pipes which are connected to a box...nothing else. If the flags or banner was at the end of a pipeline then it would have made a little sense but where they were positioned was very humorful. Good job greenpeace on wasting peoples time.
Fact almost 30 percent of canadian exports come from the tarsands. Fact, the economy of Alberta and every job is related to or a direct result of the tarsands. Fact, without the tarsands you will be paying a hell of a price for gas, and tell me this, what about the tens of thousands of jobs and families who survive because of the tar sands? Are you implying those peoples needs are going to be met by tree hugging hippies? When you can find us all other forms of feeding our kids let me know idiot.
Almost all the raw bitument and oil leaves the province because of the absurd royalty and approval system in Alberta. Never has any proposed tarsand operation been denied. Most all profits gained goes to foreign companies. In a recent report, Syncrude recieved an 18% score of environmental management. Rare cancers are up to 100 times the national average in surrounding communities. The government has in it's power to supply alberta's energy and employment needs without more tarsands development
Are you sure you know ur facts? tell me if you even know that as it stands we are not shipping raw bitumen, that is a proposal, or are the refineries that are running right now standing idle? We are shipping refined product not bitumen, and if you knew anything about bitumen, it must go thru a rough refining process before it becomes synthetic crude oil, but hey, I'm just a guy who has worked in the tar sands industry for 18yrs, I'm sure you know a lot more than I do.
sure they wouldnt need the helicopter but do you really want the economies of the world in a worse place than they already are? until alternative energies like Picken's Windmill farm start making head way we are going to need oil and this fills the need
sounds alot like greenpeace is burning some Jet A doesnt it?

It is a good thing " Vivian Krause' is in to research. Look for her interviews on Youtube. American foundations have payed over $90 million to promote their own Amarican industries. Millions of that money went to so-called grassroots protests in western Canada. Why didn't these foundations put any money to enviromental action in the Gulf of Mexico, on the eastren seaboard or the Alaskan coast? Perhaps they may have been better off watching thier own envronment

sanacore2011 9 months ago
The TAR SANDS is the single most ECOCIDAL industry on the planet. The mentality
behind the Tar Sands is end of civilisation. This is how Canada's Greenhouse gas emissions have INCREASED 45% since signing Kyoto. Those who back it are morons
who understand nothing and care about no one.
sanacore2011 9 months ago
@sanacore2011 You are the moron. To think that this is the end of civilization is just stupid. The oil sands are what brings immigrants to canada so they can have a decent living and also provides thousands of Canadians with good paying jobs. It also is our largest source of income and if it was shut down would lead to an eventual depression for us. Not to forget that we need oil because solar , wind and water cannot sustain us forever.

vehlajatt22 1 year ago
@vehlajatt22 Yes they would lose jobs that are NOT defendable and sustainable. So instead they can be retrained to build a Wind and Solar energy infrastructure from large scale to community level. They can be converted millions of cars into electric cars as part of a mass conversion project to use the vehicles we already have as the resource for new EV culture. USE YOUR IMAGINATION. There are FAR MORE JOBS and there is FAR MORE WEALTH to be
achieved by ENDING THE OIL REGIME than by keeping it.
sanacore2011 9 months ago
@sanacore2011 So how good does this solar power, wind power work as opposed to oil?? How much Co2 is expelled out of the coal mines just west of Washington DC?? All of these ideas will come to pass, its just not feasable as of yet. And the cost of all these Wonder machines that dont work will come directly out of the taxpayer, however most of us will be living in a crashed market and will be unable to afford these things. So you are living in fantasyland my friend.
1hotfred 8 months ago
@1hotfred You are living in a sick and criminal fantasy that burning dead things instead of powering the world with living things is more sustainable. There is loads of sun and other energies to power the world even at twice the population. There is however no chance of this insane status quo functioning with an expanding populace without major disasters both social and environmental. PART 1
anarchosolar 8 months ago
@anarchosolar How do you know? And who are you to say that we have enough power without oil. Tell me why companies are still buying oil if they could just use wind, solar and water you idiot. We dont have enough power without the tar sands. Get your facts straight before you blab about things you dont know anything about. We are much more sustainable with oil. You are the one living a fantasy.
kannenjo 3 months ago
CHEVRON knows it hence the patent.
anarchosolar 3 months ago
@anarchosolar Once again you have no facts. You dont know they have the capacity to install solar and wind energy generators. I know the canadian government cannot afford it and the US sure as hell can not. And your first statement does not relate because oil is helping our economy and lifestyle and drugs dont. I also think its funny that you keep talking about this when I guarentee you drive a motorized vehicle.
kannenjo 3 months ago
@kannenjo I DO KNOW THE FACTS the UNITED STATES has an EMPIRE OF OVER 700 MILITARY BASES AROUND THE WORLD...wasting tens of times the cost of what it would take to transform the energy sector.
The cost of oil is vast beyond the pump in ways that idiots like you cannot understand !!
anarchosolar 3 months ago
@anarchosolar Its funny how everyone is against you and you call me an idiot. Just give it up man. But it doesnt matter. You can believe whatever you want to. And blame whoever you want to because the tar sands are going nowhere and you know it.
kannenjo 3 months ago
@1hotfred PART 2 Every building home and skyscraper can be a solar energy generating
entity. We can convert millions of cars to go 1000miles on a single electric charge the science is there sadly the biggest obstacle is Chevron Oil's patent on the electric car battery they are holding back the entire progress of humanity for their gangster control.
anarchosolar 8 months ago
@anarchosolar So how do you intend to charge all these vehicles? How do we build the batteries cleanly? Where do we dispose of them? I guess we could build a few nuclear plants and thousands of coal fire plants. The solar output is not there, and will not be for some time. The fanatasy idea of solar power is about as realistic as the flying cars we were supposed to be using by 2000. Pollution is bad, this co2 thing is a myth. If its us causing global warming, explain the temperature on mars?
1hotfred 8 months ago
@1hotfred ok first of all there is a huge scientific community that believes and has evidence of global war second everything we do that we believe causes global warming still hurts the even if it didn't cause global warming third right now were seeing a new generation of cars that are extremely efficient fourth solar power alone my not be enough but we also have water and wind which would be able to take a huge burden off of the need for power
TheWhiteOp 7 months ago
@TheWhiteOp You sir should watch the movie The Great Global Swindle, a huge amount of the scientific community also reject the theory of Global warming.... I mean climate change.(of course the sheeple will accuse them of being paid by the big Oil) .....Back in my teens we were told the world was going into an ice age. People like Al Gore are becoming very rich from this BS lie.

kannenjo 3 months ago
@kannenjo why else would i spend 4 years doing a mechanical engineering degree if i'm not practically guaranteed a job at the oil sands?
vehlajatt22 3 months ago
@vehlajatt22 Canadian produces some of the world's finest high-speed rail and other public transportational vehicles though rarely seen in Canada it is other countries that buy them....that is one sector you could work in.
EV battery development is another. Solar and Wind is another. Sustainable and ecological building design and construction is another.

By luck, there is a lot in Alberta. Who has the most power in canada = the governement and private oil industries. Who wants to be more powerfull= them. At the cost of others. Albertas entire social structure is corrupt by the money comming from oil. People have money = comfort = indiference= dont want tosee the big picture.

crazyfarm31 1 year ago
@crazyfarm31 I'm not canadian, so unfortunately I dont have a clean solution for your country, but I bet that there is a good solution. The problem is that: Oil Industry rules over whether a clean energy will arise or no.
Illkiron 1 year ago
@Illkiron Electric and hybrid cars are massive polluters. Battery production uses massive resource as well as eventual disposal. Hydrogen requires electricity to separate water/methanol even urine. Every hybrid car uses 30-50 barrels of oil over a standard car to produce. Paint/batteries/steel etc. Walking also uses oil. Humans require food. Look at food production and oil needed for farming etc. So unless you grow enough without buying elsewhere you contribute to the "problem".
YiuTeub 1 year ago
@YiuTeub But mate, there are solutions for all these things you've listed. If you google you will see how many types of clean energy can be used for all sorts of things. There are air-moved cars, toilets w/o water that can extract energy from your poo, and a whole lot of other things that may seem crazy, but in fact if were mass produced would end our reliance in the burning of fossil fuels. But while the big oil companies (that "rule" the world) don't change we (the avarege person) can't change
Illkiron 1 year ago
@Illkiron Air moved cars rely on what to power them? I know exactly what your talking about but the compressed air happens through what eventually is oil or coal or something of that nature. The toilet thing is something Im building into my new house. Not getting methane from the poop though but composting it. Methane happens when there is no Oxygen to decompose the material. Fossils are used in drugs too. I think dirty process is a bad thing but like everything theres a learning curve.
YiuTeub 1 year ago
@YiuTeub you can use solar and wind power to compress air or make hydrogen quite easily. I'd do it myself except it's illegal to compress hydrogen. guess who paid to make that law? oil companies. Imagine if you had a hydrogen plant in your back yard that made small amounts for your own use or to compress air for an air driven city car. the problem is Hydrogen needs to be compressed to make it useful in a vehicle unless you want a huge gas bag on the roof of your vehicle.

Fabricated1337 1 year ago
Here's the BIGGEST concern, for hardcore eco-folk AND ignorant albertans who think that money and lifted pickups are all that matter.....water. It takes 6 cubic meters of FRESH WATER to create 1 cubic meter of synthetic crude oil to ship to the states. Where does the water come from? The Athabasca River. Oil won't be the most precious commodity very soon!

@stewienb Hemp fuel is green energy old timer. Ford made his first car run off hemp fuel. Just because someone is advocating on the bahalf of Hemp, does not mean they are a dope smoker. Honestly, don't be so naive.
imperiocorrupto 1 year ago
@imperiocorrupto Well since hemp fuel if free, then why isnt everyone using it? Who is producting it for free? Where can i get it? where is is grown, produced and distributed? So if it burns, then it 100% clean huh? Even natural gas or propane is not 100% clean. The beauty of capitolism and the free market is that anyone is free to compete with their ideas that would rival any energy sector. Funny that it is not in wide scale production.

Get an education and engineer better ways. its the best way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. and the tailings never leave the site... water never reaches the river or tributaries. the river naturally erodes the banks which are oilsand. its natural oil in the river.. not caused by companies.
albertanorth 2 years ago 2
insted of trying to shutdown the oilsand mines in fort mcmurray,, why dosent greenpeace try to help in development of cleaner ways to extract, process and reclamation. tailings never leave the sites.. the dyke system is so intence and massive.. it will never fail. and there are fail safe measures built in. the athabaska runs through tarsand naturally.. so.. cant' blame the company's for water pollution in the athabaska river, tributaries or downstream lakes.
albertanorth 2 years ago
Hmmm... I wonder how they got to Ft. McMurray? Did they drive cars that run on happy thoughts? Greenpeace are a bunch of hypocritical douchebags. The water coming out of that pip has water, silt, dirt, and a trace amount of hydrocarbons and is not allowed to leave the plantsite.

you dont have to be a hippie to hate the tar sands. im not a hippie, i just dont want to die due to global warning

You should really watch the Power of Nightmares. First al-Qaeda, next global warming. Politicians use fear to keep people engaged. Otherwise, they might just pursue their own rational self-interest.
jmelkis 2 years ago 2

Do you heat your home in the winter because if you dont live in a cave your a fucking hypocrite
blambo35 2 years ago
I do heat my home in the winter. What alternative is the market offering me? Surely I am not the only one that would like to live without creating an environmental disaster.
EconoChallenge 2 years ago
I've been thinking the same thing. Somehow oil gets all of the blame, yet coal is not much better. If anything, we have IMPROVED things over our ancestors. They chopped down much of Northern Europe's forests to stay warm. We don't have to do that.
jmelkis 2 years ago
stfu dirty hippie the planet is doomed anyhow. China and india will do 100 times the damage for every thing we cut back.
TOASTTUBE1 2 years ago
That is a good point. All the more reason for Canada to lead the way and show the world that we can do better. If they follow what we have done so far in North America then you are correct the wold is doomed.

If you asked a man on the street I am sure they would want clean air and clean water. Just like us they are stuck living in the world they inherited. And just like you they feel like they are powerless to make a difference.
EconoChallenge 2 years ago
sure ok shut down the tar sands 300 barrel oil aleast 5-7 times more expensive food and the whole economy goes to shit. Is that what u want
TOASTTUBE1 2 years ago
Nobody wants that. How about a little pain now rather than a lot of pain later when we run out of oil. Seems to me we will have a difficult time producing what the world needs without it. Since the end of oil will not happen in our lifetime we need not concern ourselves with the issue?
EconoChallenge 2 years ago
It is a issue a huge issue it will be 300 dollars a barrel within 5 years. We need as much as we can get. Oil isn't going to run out altogther but it will become expensive and limited.
TOASTTUBE1 2 years ago
A huge issue indeed. You know more than our current politicians so I say "Toasttube1" for Prime Minister.

No, peak oil is a myth.
jmelkis 2 years ago
You are assuming that there is such a thing as peak oil.
jmelkis 2 years ago
The concept or idea of peak oil is real when considered within the human time scale. When considered within the time scale of a planet then you are correct. I am sure this old girl with shrug us off at some point as she has done with so many other species that thrived before modern man. Then she will be able to get back to the long process of producing more light sweet crude!
EconoChallenge 2 years ago
If it were true about global warming, then yes. But it's not true. The real issues are things like water and air quality. China is very, very poor on those issues. But they are hurting themselves and possibly the ocean, too. But the global warming thing is a scam.

hey idiots,
I guarantee you drove to this site, fueled by gasoline.
Also, what you're showing is a tailings pond. The shit coming out of that pipe is mostly water and sand. And the pond is internally lined so there's no leaks.
mabish86 3 years ago
mostly water and sand? I beg to differ. Especially since that if it was just water and sand, the sand would sink to the bottom and the water would float up top. But for some reason 511 ducks died in a tailings pond last year... don't think water and sand do that.
Also, the materials in tailings ponds are well documented to be corrosive and extremely toxic. But if you think all it is is just sand and water, I suppose you would have no problem in going up there and taking a swim in it yourself.
dpnmnwgo 2 years ago
So are you suggesting that the product that was on the ground previously was not toxic? If i gave you one handful of sand soaked in oil and one handful of sand with traces of oil which one would be more toxic? So arnt the company's cleaning up a huge oil spill? you should be grateful!!
As for the ducks how many are killed in cities in Canada each year? i will guarantee you it is way more than the oil sands ever will!
blambo35 2 years ago
Never suggested that now did I? Only a moron would think otherwise. And only a moron would think that the slurry of waste in the tailings ponds is less harmful to the environment than it really is. Now I got a question for you, are you suggesting that the tar sands (NOT oil sands, call them what they really are) are this environmentally friendly establishment? Because with the ducks comment, it sounds like you couldn't care less. So, you support chopping down a forest the size of Florida?
dpnmnwgo 2 years ago
No I'm just pointing out they hypocritical stance of all these "environmental protectors" They say that the companies are chopping down this pristine forest that I DO LIVE IN but turn around and live in a building made out of wood from this pristine forest..... kinda odd don't you think? Then they talk about toxins yet they clean their shitter with bleach, drive there car, fertilize their lawn, take daily HOT showers (do you shower more than 2 times a week?) then talk about a company being bad?
blambo35 2 years ago
Do you honestly believe that they will strip mine all the oil sands? Do you know what in situ extraction is?
blambo35 2 years ago
And then I guess you support that after they chop all those trees down, they process the tar sands by taking three barrels of water from one of the largest freshwater basins in North America just to process one barrel of useable oil? It is funny because it sounds like you're supporting a place in Canada that has 10% of Canada's population yet accounts for 40% of total greenhouse emissions produced by Canada.
dpnmnwgo 2 years ago
Once again they cry for these trees yet live in a house built of wood, read the paper, have wood furniture, live in a city that riped up a forest to accommodate it ect ect. Then they Have a hot shower for 10 minutes and rinse chemicals down the drain while they waste water..... like come on fix your own back yard. And suggesting that Alberta generates 40% of GHG emissions is a retarded argument.
blambo35 2 years ago
Retarded argument? Calling it retarded signifies to me that you really don't know. It's a proven fact.
dpnmnwgo 2 years ago
It sounds like the only reason you care about this project is that it creates jobs. So what, funding renewable energy developments doesn't? I mean, for example someone has to manufacture wind generators. Someone has to maintain wind generators. Someone has to monitor these wind generators. So if you if you think for a second that shutting down the project will force us to lose jobs, it will only do so for a short term period. Jobs will be created to take its place.
dpnmnwgo 2 years ago
What about all the birds killed by these generators? what about the iron ore mines that yes have tailings ponds what about the furnaces that burn A LOT of power to produce the iron to produce the wind mill. Alberta already has a shit load of wind generation and building more all the time, but I'm sorry the world will need oil for a long time to come
blambo35 2 years ago
You're looking at the thing as if to say that currently there is no better solution. You keep looking at the death count of birds which I will agree that either way, wind energy, or oil, will kill birds. But which one in the long-term, emits far less pollution? I never heard of a wind generator that created a tailings pond before. Never heard of a wind generator that needed to take out a whole forest and drive out all the wildlife that used the forest as their habitat.
dpnmnwgo 2 years ago
And let's go beyond wind generation. Solar Generation? How many birds does that kill?
dpnmnwgo 2 years ago
How many thousand square miles would that take up? and how many open pit mines would it take to create. Or if its in Ontario is that ok? (assuming you from there) The fact remains the world will need prtro for a long time to come and you cannot argue against that. How do you heat your home in the winter please answer that for me, And tell me how many showers a week???????????
blambo35 2 years ago
We have a solar generator plopped on our roof. Cost us about $20,000. It's is on its way to paying itself off in the next 8-10 years. Completely self sufficient. Sorry.
dpnmnwgo 2 years ago
I'm from Alberta. The fact is is that the world has the technology to be self sufficient, but because fossil fuels are apparently the ones giving people jobs, that's why we have the tar sands. But I would imagine that jobs would be created to manufacture wind turbines, to maintain them, the fix them, and to monitor them... I mean it's not like they can magically appear. We need labor to build those too.
dpnmnwgo 2 years ago
Still i don't see them protesting the logging that i see near my home everyday in the boreal forest. Yet if they do in the oil sands they cry fowl? The logs end up in the same place in the end if you didn't know. In your home so you can stay warm in the winter thanx to you gas furnace. As for wind turbines have you been to pincher creek Alberta? I have many times its a eye soar. If we wanted nothing but wind power it would take WAY more land than the oil sands and drive off just as many critters
blambo35 2 years ago
Are you kidding me? Wind turbines you don't need to stick in a forested area in the first place. You have the option of sticking them in the middle of a field. And you're telling me that wind turbines will destroy more land than the oil sands? The oil sands project at its peak will cover an area the size of Florida. Don't think Alberta needs that much area for wind generators as a single generator can power up to 5,000 homes. How much land does a single turbine take up? Not a heck of a lot.
dpnmnwgo 2 years ago
Well I am assuming you live in a wood house and that timber probably came from my favorite camping sight, your welcome by the way. And you obviously haven't been to pincher creek it takes up A LOT of land not counting the service roads to every turbine. And you obviously don't know what in situe extraction is, do some research please gust google it prity cool stuff.
blambo35 2 years ago
You're favorite camping site? Where would that be? Way to assume things again. I hope I don't have to point out what assuming does. And yes, obviously my house is mostly made of wood. But I've partaken in planting trees, so I suppose that my little bit of environmental damage has been covered. Can you say the same? We've also added more trees to our lot than were there. And I guess every environmentalist is a hypocrite to you. What would it take to be a true environmentalist? Live in a lean to?
dpnmnwgo 2 years ago
Well a lean to would kill trees lol. All I'm trying to say that its soooo easy to point a finger then turn a blind eye. Aka i suggest you should shower once a week What do you want to know where i live u psycho lol. My favorite camp, well it WAS along the berland river which is now nothing but a giant clear cut. But sorry the oil sands will be around for your children to work at. O and since you live in Alberta it must be mighty cold at your place in the winter or does a sweater do?
blambo35 2 years ago
Camping and living are two different things. A lean to can be constructed with trees and branches that were already dead and lying on the ground in the first place. And by the way, in 2002, tar sands emitted 3.6% of total emissions. And that was just 2002. I wonder what it is today.
dpnmnwgo 2 years ago 2
Solar power is primarily used for our heating and lighting. Sorry, but it's actually not too bad here. So I guess to answer your question, my thermostat read 20 degrees.
dpnmnwgo 2 years ago
Sorry but replanting trees doesn't do much to replace the trees one has consumed. It's a good idea, but it just doesn't make up for the natural processes that make up a diverse forest and ecoystem.
HokageLeafVillage 2 years ago
Situ extraction requires 2-4.5 cubic meters of water to produce one cubic meter of oil. And yes, they recycle water and reuse it and can potentially bring it down to about 0.2 cubic meters of water per cubic meter of oil. But it also notes that the extraction process uses about 1 billion cubic feet of natural gas, making the tar sands one of the eight largest polluters in the world. Canada signed Kyoto and has never once met its target of 6% annual emissions.

Yes it employs people, but so do greener industries and energy systems(that don't run out and leave a toxic wasteland).
gooddaver 3 years ago
Open your eyes Canada, we are just getting started down a dangerous path! Why defend the multinational corporations, they buy the best PR firms and politcians money can buy. As for the working families, they don't give 2 sh*ts about you, and will throw you away when the $ is all gone!
gooddaver 3 years ago
We (Council of Canadians)are now calling the tailing 'ponds' what they really are -'toxic reservoirs'. The corporate description tailing 'ponds' imply that these man made reservoirs are small in scale & naturally formed. Nothing is further than the truth. They are toxic reservoirs within the most destructive project on Earth.

the funny part of that is the water pouring out of that pipe next to the banner is clean water.

When you can find us all other forms of feeding our kids let me know idiot.
canadianeh1369 3 years ago 3
Almost all the raw bitument and oil leaves the province because of the absurd royalty and approval system in Alberta. Never has any proposed tarsand operation been denied. Most all profits gained goes to foreign companies. In a recent report, Syncrude recieved an 18% score of environmental management. Rare cancers are up to 100 times the national average in surrounding communities. The government has in it's power to supply alberta's energy and employment needs without more tarsands development
skorpionpig 3 years ago
Are you sure you know ur facts? tell me if you even know that as it stands we are not shipping raw bitumen, that is a proposal, or are the refineries that are running right now standing idle? We are shipping refined product not bitumen, and if you knew anything about bitumen, it must go thru a rough refining process before it becomes synthetic crude oil, but hey, I'm just a guy who has worked in the tar sands industry for 18yrs, I'm sure you know a lot more than I do.
