  • Love from Lahore.

  • yes i am sure

  • This is in Raaga Hemant which is close to Bhinna Shadaj. It is not Mishra Mand. Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Saheb ji composed it in Raaga Hemant and the taal is Keherava. Thanks for the lovely video, I am a big fan of Kaushiki ji!

  • if your lover listen to this song to be more precise the way she is singing and obviously if he is not tone deaf will he return early ? just think about it .

  • HYYYYYYYYYYYyy KIYA BAAT HY WAH GEE

  • my friends this is

    Rag - Bhinashadaj

    Tal - Kaherava

  • goooodddddddddddddd

  • xclent

  • Noor Jehan was from Kasur a small town which bore singers like Ustad Baray Ghulam Ali Khan , Ustad Barkat Ali Khan , Mubarik Aii Khan , Nusrat Ali Khan, Rahat Fatheh Ali Khan Ghazal Singer Ghulam Ali. You need to listen to Noor Jehan from the start of her carrier to the end, She was an actress , a performer and a singer and producer of many Movies. A beginner listener will have a hard time understanding her style .

  • do you have the entire performance on mp3?

  • awsome. one of the greatest classic of ustad barray ghulam ali khan sung by kaushiki jee in a very excellent way. no words to praise her. unbelieveable.

  • Very nice indeed !

  • an absolutely enjoyable piece. anyone hearing her first time, please tell me if u liked her.

  • Kaushika, if you ever read this message just to let you know you are the best of all that I have heard with exception of the greatest Bade Gulam Ali Khan. Amazing thumri and excellent selection of raag, well balanced Sur, Lye, well balanced taal, what an amazing composition and hard work on your Riyaaz. This shows what can a right guidance, and knowledge of Golden Raag can take you. I wish you well in rest of your performances. I am looking forward to see you in Chicago soon.

  • LOVE YOU, I am in love with this beautiful voice really really nice she is incredible

  • She is certainly the best female singer who has done this song. She is quite superior to Noor Jahan and Fariha Pervez (of which I prefer the latter).

She sounds on par with the Bade Ustad himself.

  • @shushanto You must be insane to compare Noor Jahan with two young babies. She was a music institution in herself. One of the finest singers in south Asia. Lataji is a great admirer of her and always held her in highest esteem.

  • @vinnimishra

Well the age is of little consequence here since Kaushiki is easily old enough to be at her peak and Noor Jahan was probably of a similar age at HER peak. So calling Kaushiki a 'baby' isn't really much of an argument. Unless you just automatically assume that a singer from an older generation MUST be better, which of course is illogical (although a lot of people seem to have this idea). It's true in Western music, but certainly not in Eastern - with the exception of just a couple

  • @vinnimishra

Having heard a couple of Noor Jahan's songs from her peak (I must say I was not very familiar with her work - had only heard her name really), she's certainly a good singer, but I don't like the sound of her voice. It's rather rough and manly. I guess it suits Punjabi folk music. She's certainly nothing compared with Lata, who was amazing at both classical and adhanik. It's just that Noor is from an older time. Artists have a tendency to admire those who preceded them.

  • speechless..........................

  • love!!!

  • the thing that today's music lacks is 'clarity in the pipes'.

and I have just found it here :)

beautifully sung, and with such clarity.

  • So so beautiful, vah !

  • wah...wahh...superb

  • Gr8 soNg SpEcIaLlY from 5;39 to 8;05....

  • Simply superb.

  • how can 5 people dislike this video? Are they seriously out out of their mind? Just amazing really.Great voice and amazing potential

  • Let me explain in a easy way to many ,what DHADRA is , its a 3-beat called WALTZ in the Western world, and KHERWA is the 4-beat called RHUMBA . She is singing in Kherwa ,the Dhadra is the singing style and not the Beat. IMTIAZ FARUQUI , New York

  • Lucky the guy who is her husband...oh..I would kiss her feet everyday if she were my wife...

  • bohat hi khoobsoorat

  • only one word can describe her voice.. HEAVENLY..

  • lovely song

  • Wah ji wah

piyaa ki yaad mein hi maze aa rahein hain

  • Awesome

  • Superb ! Thank you

  • Awsome ! Great Singing Kaushiki ji... Amrish Mishra

  • a real claasic thing by barray ghulam ali khan , and no ordinary singer would even dare to attempt it. well sung kaushiki. its a thumri

  • I don't know the a.b.c of raagas, yet this song well sung making its way to my heart made me feel perfect ecstasy. Thanks for being so kind and generous.

  • Dear Sister Kaushiki Ji, I am really carried away by your totally immensive rendition. I heard your rendition in Raag Maand. You have imbibed the feel of the raag and bhaav at this younger age. May God bless you with supporting to scale great heights. Tks.

  • She has a splendid voice of her own .... why did she need to introduce the nasal overtone?? but nevertheless, what a talent!! God bless you Kaushiki. Just offer everything to him and keep singing, HE will take care of the rest.

  • She's the daughter of Pandit Ajay Chakraborty. So, music is in her blood! I'm sure her dad is extremely proud of his illustrious daughter.

  • MY GOD...............

  • nice!

  • ya it seems like 'keherva' but actually is a 'Dadra'... woh kehte hai na "vajjan" dadre ka hai lekin counting is like keherva....

  • Hi Pieter, are you sure its a Dhadra? the tekka seems like kherwa

  • @himu90

I see your point... but Kaushiki announced it as "a dadra" - and I follow her in this of course, moreover I have the recording of her announcement as proof :) - no doubt in her announcement she was referring to "a dadra" here as the classical style of singing and not to the tabla taal... so, yes, this can be a bit confusing, initially I was asking myself exactly the same question as you do here :)

  • @PieterdeRooijHolland Fair enough, no need to argue with Kaushiki. Thanks!

  • @PieterdeRooijHolland

Yes Dadara is certainly a form of semi classical singing and this what it is.

  • @PieterdeRooijHolland

I believe she was describing the music genre as 'dadara' , not the tabla beat, which is also called dadra

  • @srtambe : hi, I already explained this extensively months ago saying she was referring to a dadra as the style of singing and not to the tabla taal. See my response above adressed to himu90

  • @PieterdeRooijHolland

I think the music genre is dadara , not the tabla beat, that's what Kaushiki was trying to say, I think

  • @PieterdeRooijHolland

This is a Dadra bandish, the taal is also dadra. However, in many instances, it can easily become Kaharwa, specially in drut parts towards the end of the recital.

  • @PieterdeRooijHolland the thekkka is of course keharwa..more precisely this thekka is called the "launi"---which goes like "dha dhin na tin na tin na na tete"

  • @himu90 The difference in the two forms is only in their metre - Thumri is at a slower pace - and dadra at a faster pace. Both can be sung in kehrwa, dadra, teentaal, deepchandi, punjabi theka. The poetry in Thumri and Dadra is most important, hence words of the poetry are never broken while improvising. Thumri/Dadras are normally set in mishra ragas; techniques like bol-banav are used to express various shades of emotions. Peter, thanks so much for sharing wonderful performances by Kaushiki.

  • Ustad Baray Ghulam Ali Khan hail from Kasur a small town in Pakistan Punjab , who sang this Thumri His younger brother Ustad Barkat Ali khan was also an amazing classical singer who taught our famous ghazal singer Ghulam Ali. Melody Queen Noor Jehan was also from Kasur. Such a small town gave birth to such greats.

  • thank you sahirdonsocomeon, your translation makes complete sense . i am grateful.

  • would someone be kind enough to translate the words "Yaad Piya Ki Aaye" for me? it seems to me this singer blesses the earth with her beautiful voice.

  • Yaad Piya Ki Aaye (My beloved's remembrance )

Yeh dukh saha na jaye( this pain I can't endure)

I couldn't think of better words to express this, sorry if it doesn't make sense

  • That's correct Sahir, thanks! I had no time yet to answer. Two years ago Kaushiki wrote to me that the words 'Yaad Piya Ki Aaye' mean 'I am remembering my beloved'. I read on the web that Bade Ghulam Ali Khan who created this song, lost his wife, Allah Jiwai, in 1932.

I quote from the web: "His grief, poured into melody, gave birth to the immortal thumri 'Yaad piya ki'aye, reflecting the very trauma of his heart."

  • Yeh dukh saha na jaye hai ram, This grief I can't stand oh god.

  • Yaad piya ki aaye: Memories of my beloved remind me...

Yeh dukh saha na jaaye: This unbearable pain I cannot endure...

  • Allah ne JITNI KHOOBSURAT AWAZ dee hai ITNA HASEEN bhee banaya hai. MASHALLAH EXCELLENT VOICE SHE HAS.....................Speechless.

  • she has the best voice quality and a great control on her voice. Great , simply awsome

  • big regards to Kaushiki Chakrabarty amma

    you live long

  • the voice tore my heart nd reached some where very profound..i hope u read this kaushiki di..I wud love to learn vocals from u... :)

  • Nice singing. This is such a classic composition and I feel too much vistar..in every phrase actually, it sways the feel and bhav of the original composition and actually alters it to a new piece altogether. Trick is to keep the original composition and do subtle vistars to enhance it enough to not venture away too much.

  • gfgfdag

  • Super very emotional

  • maine jab se thumri apki u tube par suni hai main apko badhai deta hoon.apne bahut sunder gaya hai.main waheguru ke aage ardas karta hoon waheguru aapko lambi umar de.

  • amazing

  • why the fuck are u comparing???

    give chance to the NEW...

  • no one is questioning her talent and beautiful rendition...but comparing her with Ustadji is too far fetched...even she would feel terrible..profoundly irritated and tell shudhir to go to hell...

  • fantastic beutiful voice!!

  • Kaushiki is the pride of the country! At her age, the calibre and serenity in her expressions are stupendous! Watch out.... she will give us much in the future to come!!!

  • I agree wit u sudhir dis world has a habit of comparing ........anywayz Kaushiki Chakrabarty ji aap ki delhi abhi bohat dur hai .....all da best (itna garib yaad piya kia aaye nai suuna aaj tak )

  • It is sudhir who started with the comparison to Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.

  • Much sweetness in voice and considerable virtuosity in overall rendition, punctuated by some rare and quite marginal deviations from sustained high quality( esp. from 7:80 on). Thanks for the post.
