  • This song haunts me. The message being portrayed connects with me and makes my hair stand on end whenever I hear it. The outro at the end with the desolate piano just makes me break out in goosebumps. Its remarkable how a Trent Reznor manipulates your emotions with his art.

  • In this world woven of illusions some are more precious to us than others.

  • trent reznor wrote this song just to make me cry.

  • This is what happens when a man surrounds himself with nothing but ass-kissers for almost two decades. He was never a very good lyricist but this was like a new level for him.

"Feel the hollowness inside of your heart" NIIIIICE, what a lyric.

"What if all the world you think you know is an elaborate dream" WOW dude, I didn't know he was a philosopher!

Seriously, this is so close to being a parody of lyrics.

  • @keithburgun I like it because Adam Curtis used it on a documentary called "all watched over by machines of loving grace". Admittedly Mr. Curtis didn't play the lyrics but still..

  • This song just makes me so... Emotional. It is just so beautiful. :')

  • listen to that fucking audience freak out. they looooooooooove it

  • I don't think the sadness of his songs has to make you sad, in fact, it is what i listen to when i feel most depressed, and his music has always made me feel so much better. if NIN didn't exist, i don't know what i would've done when i was a teenager. And i still feel the same about it today.

  • The Ultimate Video Gamers Musician.

  • I start crying each time i listen to this song.

  • I love this song. One of my favorites all time for NIN

  • these what ifs drive me insane, ruin entire highs

  • a warm place.. and then VletRmx those songs makes you feel good..

  • One of the best tracks on the with teeth album and i was psyched to hear Trent Reznor is doing another NiN Album

  • i worked out to this when you were a baby.

  • @chriscontreras66 Too bad I wasn't a baby in 2005 :$

  • This song is too amazing for words..

  • It's all right where it belongs - in deeeeeeep shit.

  • This is what happens after you've grown up while never giving into temptation or vice just like the authorities in your life wanted. So now you're wondering where this happiness is supposed to be that you were promised if you stayed good and virtuous. It's not there. But you can't go back and relive your youth either. Can't go back and rescue it from the chains of "always" and "never" and "shall not". It's gone, sacrificed to an idea that's just that, an idea, nothing real.

  • @Endymion766 It's never too late to live your life, making excuses like "wasted youth" when you have air in your lungs and fucken blood in your veins is definitely what "they" want you to think. Sadness is a sickness that passes like a virus, and with every bout your tolerance and immunity build...real is all around you, experience it.

  • @Endymion766 My dude, I've been trying to write that passage for years now. Nice one. Don't live for ideology, it's unnatural and twisted. Where do we want to be? Impassioned, dancing, vibrant, powerful, sexual, creative, and hostile toward control. He with the most energy is the one winning.

  • @Endymion766 Exactly. For some reason I like listening to this song after drinking. Alone.

  • @weebeastiebaby

one of those beautifully depressing songs that conjure deep reflection and immerse you in thoughts about life universe and everything.

  • @Endymion766 and thats why i drink

  • @Endymion766 stop reflection on your youth then the most important part of life is now the past means shit

  • @Endymion766 The crazy thing is, the same could be said about someone who always gave into the temptations and vices and in the wake of it all, is now wondering if the path of good and virtue is where fulfillment laid. That's what this song is contemplating. "The grass is always greener on the other side." You can never know if you made the right decision; but you have to be okay with not knowing.

  • @EnigmAxxxx This comment here, right on man, far more intelligent than Endymion766s imo. Have to keep in mind if there was a temptation, Trent probably gave into it. He wrote this album while in rehab or shortly thereafter if I remember correctly, and the whole album is more or less about coming to terms with the grass always seeming greener, whether you're 'clean' or in the despair of drug addiction (which was the subject of The Fragile).

  • @EnigmAxxxx And although the album expresses a lot of doubt and anger about his new life it seems like he worked through his issues with this album since he appears to be clean. ;)

  • @Endymion766 impressive. are those your words? or quotes? interpritation? Well said.

  • @stupidgenious1 Just my feelings in the simplest way I could think of. I dislike lengthy rants.

  • @Endymion766 what were you expecting to do or be? I'm not trying to irritate you , I mean ...what is it you were expecting? Youth has nothing to do with true happiness...you must live your life for YOU...and what makes YOU happy...your comment makes me think you are expecting 'it' (happiness) to just happen...you have to chase it and make it, create it....whatever that happiness is...DO it....take action! YOU can.

  • @Endymion766 Couldn't have said it better... I assume you have learned this the hard way same as I?

  • I stock shelves at Kroger!!! I play this song in my head while Im working. Gotta make sure every product is right where it belongs. But this reality is not what I believe, its just what I have to do for someone else.

  • See the animal in his cage that you built.

  • Zajebiste!

  • This song is about living in the matrix.

  • Who would dislike this song?

  • I'm sorry I have not made more of my life. I waste so much time. What the hell is wrong with me? Really. Why am i here?

  • trent is pure genius... nothin' else to say-

  • 3:00 all the way to 3:12 LET THE GOOSEBUMPS BEGIN.

  • I have to admit, I have maladaptive daydreaming and MPD on top of that. My mind has built an elaborate world, countless peoples, religions, languages. While this song has a figurative meaning-- this means everything to me on a very, very literal and personal reason... I'd give anything to have these disorders taken from me. Of course, if you can find a meaning in Trent's amazing music and love it, that is enough for anyone.

  • In my opinion one of the better Albums created by Reznor. His words have influenced me greatly, even to this day.

  • This song changed my life forever. Most powerful words I've personaly ever heard. Knowing you will never see this anyways, Thank you Trent Reznor. You actually helped make me the man i am today.

  • Great drunk song.

  • This song is ACTUALLY about Portal.

Waking up in the test centre to find out that you've been completing the same series of tests over and over again. Then to one day escape and find there is a whole world out there that you didn't know about.

  • The lyrics have no true meaning, If an artist told you exactly what the lyrics/video meant, that song or video would no longer have meaning to you.

  • ...Heavy tune!!...

  • This song is ACTUALLY about waking up to the illusion of life.

One day, if you use your intuition strongly enough, you will realize you are the animal in the cage. Don't look in his eye because you refuse to see the truth that lies in his soul. You are a slave to the machine. Everything is not what it seems. Everything in your head was programmed to be there, you live in a dream world, and you are alone because you can only communicate the words your masters have taught you. Happiness in slavery

  • I Like It, I Like It A Lot :-D

  • 90% of everything we think and believe come directley from our parents. From ages 0-8 90% of every thought we will ever have has already been. So from ages 8- End of life we only use 10% of our conscious brain and 90 % of our subconscious brain.. and we believe our perception is Reality Lol

  • Beautiful.

  • Solipsism in music form.

  • @Acension86 not about solipsism. it mentions solipsism, but as a tool to ask what would it change if nobody else even existed. What this song really is about is knowledge, and what that is supposed to mean. Even if we could see through the cracks in our reality, would we be able to understand or are we better off not knowing the truth, if it exists?

  • @amorfation: That sounds like Lovecraftian nihilism.

  • @Acension86 only just learnt this world after a google search but wow.. i've had thoughts like this since i was very young, no wonder i get depressed so much haha

  • this song is about..............what ever i dream its about

  • when his voice gets clear....

  • @youandiaremeanttodie with the crowd cheers.. beautiful

  • ...Pretty wild song...

  • Beautiful, honest song. Touches a deep part of me. And brings a tear.

  • Comment removed

  • @Hybridhor The music itself is sad but with the lyrics it's even tougher, I shed tears many times. It's beautiful but I try to stay away from this song for that cause.

  • @Dukefazon don't ever listen to this song if you're drinking alone...

  • @1rammstein21 Even better when your stoned, blows your mind.

  • This song describes the way I feel constantly anymore.

  • @plaguex1 Makes no sense. Try again.

  • no words can describe what I'm feeling, when i listen to this song

  • this song is awesome

  • This is from the times songs had a meaning.

  • Literally felt in love with this song !

  • seeing through the cracks, is like eating too much lsd then getting scared. You find yourself afraid too see. It's like the song "ONLY" where he says things aren't is pretty on the inside. The inside can be scary as hell if your not prepared.

  • "and if you look at your reflection, is that all you want to be?" --> you have to change yourself. "what if you could look right through the cracks, would you find yourself, find yourself afraid to see?" ---> you're about to see through, and you can realise that you're feared of it.. one word i'm talking about: irradiation.

  • "what if everything around you isn't quite as it seems" --> you want to get more and more.. "what if all the world you think you know, is an elaborate dream?" --> you create your own reality, your life, your future just by THINKING.

  • This song is about dissociation, and feeling trapped in yourself, and how all the beliefs and ideas you have instilled in your brain is just your illusion, and your really alone in your illusion. Your the only one feeling your thoughts..Then you watch your own thoughts from an outside observer. Then you think if I'm observing myself think then who is actually thinking if I'm observing.

  • @NineInchNails25 that is what i'm talking about!! wooooow i'm really happy about Trent wrote a spiritual text.... if that's the exact meaning of the song. i just found this song 4-5 months ago.

  • @NineInchNails25 That is genious bro!

  • @NineInchNails25 I agree

  • @NineInchNails25

Row, row, row your boat, Gently down the stream. Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, Life is but a dream.

  • @NineInchNails25 other words, it's like being in the present. (nice..)

  • @NineInchNails25 songception....we need to go deeper

  • @NineInchNails25 So we are not thoughts? we must be beyond thoughts, Like Awareness..We must be observers first and anything else must be Ego related. This is deeper than a Submarine!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @NineInchNails25

thank you for the explination.....does it apply to you or me?

  • @NineInchNails25 thats so confusing!

  • @NineInchNails25 You nailed it. Well said. I'm going to quote you.

  • @NineInchNails25 Couldn't have been said any better! This is the most spiritual song ever! Makes me feel like a hippy. It's so deep!

  • @NineInchNails25 thinking and observing ... often preformed together.

  • @lvd55555 Not when observing yourself thinking from the third person through dissociation.. It's different. An example is dearealization. It's when you observe yourself thinking from outside yourself.

  • @NineInchNails25 good shit, bro.

  • my opinion: "see the safety of you life you have built, everything where it belongs" --> you're closed, you're afraid of loving yourself, you want to suffer, you can't imagine and you fear of living as a free person.

"feel the hollowness inside of your heart, and it's all, right where it belongs" --> consequences --> you are suffer.

  • so back to the music..the reason for a lot of person feels they are alone, because they don't love themselves enough. please mind this: I love myself, i can feel myself good if i'm alone.

  • Comment removed

  • i think it's about you have to love yourself as much as you can, because we're all alone now and we will be forever i know, you can say that there is your girlfriend, boyfriend etc. but what if you have no one..? please people don't identify yourself with everybody you meet in your life because no one is the same one as you. there will be lots of person who will slight you everytime. and if you can't accept this,if you can't love yourself, then you can hang yourself tomorrow.

  • @Retrospect1995 i'm proof that that isn't true. 'cause i do exist.

  • I blame woman.

  • @Retrospect1995 doesn't the fact that others think that kinda disprove it?

  • NINCEPTION.

  • one of the most beautiful songs ever

  • thumbs up if you think the 19 dislikes are people that like big donkey weiners!!!!!!

  • Trent Reznor is the most influential artist i have listened to and his music is the most meaningful. i have benefited so much from his music and all i want is more.

  • At first, I thought this was about the twelve steps. Then I realized this went way deeper than the steps could ever reach. The steps come out of this and not the other way around.

  • all watched over by machines of loving grace

  • what if everything around you....

    isn't quite as it seems...?

what if all the world you used to know...

    is an elaborate dream...?

  • this is one of those rare songs that will shut you up, and finally truly listen. not hear, but listen.

  • well, since i'm horribly depressed after listening to this song; i'm gonna go check out "That Day" by Vokab Kompany. it'll cheer me up. no i'm not spamming for them, its just a happy song.

  • this song is beatifull

  • I am pretty sure this song manages to capture all of existential philosophy in 5 minutes.

  • There are no words to describe this song.

    Beautiful? No, its much more...

  • Hey peeps, not a fan of "shameless puns" but seems it's a must to spread yourself today. So I'm spreading this message on all vids that I love myself, figurin if You have the same taste as I do you might enjoy my own music? Sure Trent wouldn't mind. Just released a demo, check it out if ya have the time :) Take care everyone! Liam Andrew

  • God i wish music would just go back to the way it was. before autotune, prepubescent high pitched whining and screamo shit. back when being a musician meant you had to have talent. Trent Reznor is a modern day Mozart and he doesnt get the respect he deserves, stuff like that makes me sad.

  • @zyph4lights Remember he won an Oscar. But I agree with everything you said, I think he is a kind of JS Bach of our time.

  • @zyph4lights Oh I do agree, he is amazing considering most modern day musicians don't even know what he did musically in this song... the song hosts a unique melody and harmony as the last quarter of the song the harmony melodically switches octaves above the melody which is rare outside of the classical/orchestra music world

  • @zyph4lights stop listening to commercial music, there's your cure. Music has been terrible in mainstream for a long time. Net is curing that slowly but surely. One year of satellite radio and i've become a huge fan of many new bands. Art will always win.

  • @zyph4lights this was released in 2005 man, there was screamo shit and high pitched whining back then too

  • @zyph4lights right on bro

  • Another year around and i hear this song in my mind again... Peace and snow is so close...

    X-mas...

  • the ultimate cognitive dissonance!

  • 16 people went to hell after listening to this song!

  • this song is impossible to conceive unless you are Trent. it's so beautiful

  • this song makes me think about my son thats still bakin in his momma's oven

  • sensationell

  • Crazy to me how he can add in an avid applauding crowd and it still gives off the aura of being alone.

  • @Roylee72 Trust me, you can never feel as alone on your own as you can when surrounded by people. That's when you really reallize the emptyness.

  • &~&

  • i wish i could un favorite all my other videos and leave this one as the only favorite.

  • See the animal in his cage that you built

Are you sure what side you're on?

  • This song makes me want to question my existence..............its like nothing around me even makes sense anymore.................i just want leave this world and go somewhere far far away where nobody can hear me and just fade away into oblivion........... i have a perfect life...nothing can be better but i still feel that something is missing..maybe its faith or maybe its just me!

  • This is probably my favorite song ever.

  • I woke up yesterday after a rave party and woke up feeling mighty sober and somehow disconnected with reality, my mind miles away from my body. I started listening to this song and felt at peace with that

  • you take these lyrics and you spell them a certain way, i take it as a deep and painful introspection on a hopeless individual, one who is trapped, with none to blame but oneself, and why, what caused this stagnantcy .. mine is drugs, mine is right when it all makes sense and reality changes itself you can find me like limbless paraplegic jonsening for a breath

  • this song is sooo fucking...NICE!!!

it soothing, serene almost, brings me to my childhood for sum reason and makes me love my family so much more

  • @matthewglenn21 you obviously didn't get the point of the song if it brought you to childhood. :)

  • @hallorand9 You obviously don't get the point of music if you feel someone else's interpretation is wrong because it differs from your own.

  • @RyanfaeScotland You obviously don't know why Trent made this song then, and hell, i wasn't stating my opinion. i can even give you links of where Reznor States the point of this song.. Even though it's pretty clear. I was just saying that childhood is all about 'ignorance is bliss' and this song, is far, FAR, from that. (:

  • @hallorand9 You obviously aren't just commenting on matthews's post for the sake of putting him down so I retract my last post which I really just put there for the sake of sticking up for others :D

  • @RyanfaeScotland :D fair enough.

  • @hallorand9 I didn't say it had a relevent point of childhood, I just said it brought me to it, had a nice and melodic sound to it...and I just connected it with my childhood

  • this was amazing in concert

  • as an agoraphobic freak, he makes me think.

  • people who disliked this are illusions.

  • Fucking amazing song, artist, album, fucking period

  • Awesome track ....no doubt :)

  • This song is the jam. I love it when the tone changes at 3:00.....Reznor is the man!

  • @kornholioa just played it at my best friends funeral...i felt him lift my spirits up with a touch of his ghostly but loving hand. he told me my life will finally work out, and that I will find strength again

  • my life is like every lyric of this song and i cant help but cry when i think about it where ever i may be

  • Honestly, NIN is just as good as they've always been.

  • For the first time I really undestand the meaning of this song, and for some reason I can't stop crying...

  • @ErinSpades i feel ya bro

  • @ErinSpades Totally know the feeling, same thing happened to me today.

  • @ErinSpades

    lol... cry baby

  • @ErinSpades i don't, wich is ?

  • @ErinSpades We live in a world where we become prisoners of our own making. Most of us fear having our hearts abandoned or rejected so much that we end up isolated by our own fears. We look up from the pit and contemplate how alone we are, staring at the light that shines out of reach. Let your eyes adjust to the dark and you'll see that you're not alone in the hole.

  • @ErinSpades lol faggot

  • @ErinSpades

Tastes bitter, doesn't it? It's never easy to adjust.
