pookylooky is an idiot. A typical opportunistic troglodyte. There are many factor for people to buy the food and not wait to get it for free. One off the top of my head is psychological factor. In our stratified society MOST people would not want to be associated with being poor and there for would pay for food. Furthermore, most people don't mind paying for food if they know it goes to a good cause. The truth is humanity is more socialistic than what the elites want individuals to believe.

I worked at a grocery store when I was in college. The left over food in produce and the bakery were donated to local food banks and food pantries. Whether some or the intire the industry still pratices this I can't tell you.
