Was bad too. He had serious mental illness all his life and we had to see his suffering. If assisted suicide is to be legalized then those who choose to take their life with out help from an organization should have the same right to die.
People with depression and mental illness take their lives all the time. My brother took his in 2011. What is the difference between suicide and assisted suicide. One who takes their life to escape emotional pain and suffering is considered taking the easy way out but one who is assisted in taking their life because of physical pain and the emotional pain caused by physical pain is seen as a person who is blessed and strong and right in making his choice to die. The suffering my brother felt w
Great video. There is no reason that government should criminalize a person's choice to determine how their life will end. I do take issue with many of the comments against religion. It is certainly wrong for anyone to impose any opinion into law based on their religious beliefs, but religion is not the problem. The problem is people that think that they have the authority to regulate our personal choices.
It should be legal. It is the individual's choice. They evaluated psychologically and medically to make sure this decision is indeed warranted. Who is anyone to say they can't have peace?
When talking about abortion, Christopher Hitches said bringing religion into the argument takes all the steam out of it. I would say the same for the argument on assisted suicide. Leave religion out of it, and if your argument is strong enought, it will stand on its own. The problem is that there is no good argument for why a consenting adult should not be able to end his or her life. If someone is suffering bad enough to want to die, they should have the option to go in a dignified way.
While most are (rather ignorantly) arguing religion in these comments, some are watching the video and marveling at the beauty and frailty of life...to choose to not suffer anymore leaves me feeling inspired to live my life NOW while I'm healthy to its fullest...
@cheryldenise1968 Have you ever seen God, How can you tell what you call God is not Ganesh (the indian god) or Odin (nordic god) or any of the hundreds of fake gods created by humans throught history
@cheryldenise1968 Only one problem with that, there is no god, its all medieval hocus-pocus. If only you god-bothering types would get that through your thick skulls the world would be a better place.....
@MsSmileAllot Thats exactly why I would never believe in a god!!! If there was such thing as hell I wouldn't wish that on anybody!!! But you god loving religious freaks do it all the time. As soon as someone says they don't believe in god, a believer threatens them with pain and suffering for eternity. That is sick and I don't know why anybody would want to be a part of that!!!!!!
@shadowflyer22 Asshole wait till you suffer from a lethal disease and I mean SUFFER, before you have NO MEDICAL EDUCATION and can judge on how people SUFFER you have NO RIGHT to tell anyone that they are sinners....you are just babbeling shit
@Sternlein4USA I have had a medical education, and I know that the bone marrow now can be healed using Stem Cell Transplants, Steroids and Chemotherapy. Paraprotein which causes immunodefiency can not be cured but, just like HIV/AIDS you probably still can live for 5-10 years as long as the White blood cells are counteracting. I am against this man committing suicide with a possibility of survival!
@satojinnthehero you are so full of shit, because FIRST OFF BONE MARROW and/or STEM CELLs do NOT WORK for everybody and DO NOT WORK on all CANCER TYPES so you are talking bullshit, on top of it all, ANYONE SHOULD have the RIGHT to decide on their on DEATH when knowing that they are suffering from a terminal illness..PERIOD...keep your BIBLETHUMPING BULLSHIT to yourself
what about all the poor people without the means to fly to Switzerland? the common man once again bears the burdens of this world while the fornicate few its luxuries.
@jup217 You and we all need to do everything we can, to make our congressmen aware of the need to allow anyone to end their life with dignity, we have to get off our asses in our respective countries. Luckily it is a skip and a stone-throw for me to get there, but I do know, that in a few cases Dignitas and Exit will try to help for someone to travel to Switzerland
I wish people would take religion out of this debate. I believe in God.....but the God which I know would not put people thru a painful undignified death. My God did not bring me into this world, my parents did. My father died thru colon cancer, over 5 months, something I would like no one to ever have to see. My mother died in her sleep. I guess I know which way I want to go. No individual, clergy or governmaent body should dictate how another individual dies.
No one is the wiser about such state intrusion into a a very intimate and private moment, as dying. Alas, with most effective drugs that might be used to ends one's life, in the hands of the state, it is no wonder that suicide is such a messy and botched thing for so many suffering souls. The medical doctor is not an executioner, and only euthanasia can be considered a medical procedure, only by the perverse notion that ending a life is "therapeutic". The latter is, indeed, twisted.
I work as a CNA... I think in my opinion as long as they have the ability to make the cognitive choice that they should be allowed too... I have seen suffering for too long and it is sad to watch a person waste away to nothing...
my only question is that if your prepared to take an overdose of barbituates then why not have other drugs too like mdma or lysergic acid, after all they could make the whole experience less of a big deal? answers please.
@wordscontrolminds Because not everyone responds the same to MDMA or Lysergic acids. You may have the trip of a lifetime, but some people may experience immense distress or pain because they can not control what is happening. With barbiturates, you fall asleep and never wake up. It's a pacifying experience compared to the sheer terror of having alucinations. Which one would you prefer? The answer is easy for me.
@Stuntman175 It should be there as an option along with a whole load of mood enhancing drugs. I personally know of three people who chose to die while under the influence. My main bug bear is that some of the people I have seen opting for euthanasia are doing it because of a fear of something that 'might' happen. The recent british programme illustrated this where a young man with MS opted to die yet I have a friend who is 10 times worse yet enjoys life.3 months counselling should be required.
@wordscontrolminds It's still their choice. No one has the right to tell someone how they should live their life or how to end it. If I wanted to die today, even if the next day was going to be better, I would still do it, because I have the right to choose. Is the right choice to make? Depends on the situation really. If you have a life threatening or debilitating disease, even if you were against it, it's still good to have the choice for other people that are in favor of it.
If it comes to it i want to die peacefully with those i love round me, holding me (if they chose to be there, lol) and with some music that i like in the background (maybe a cheeky spliff too if i'm able). that would be my choice.
Incorrect good sir, Man can die at his desired choice, it is known as suicide. If God did not wish for man to take his own life, how come he made it possible.
@phrankin God has made possible things to happen by man kind which he wish or Not wish to happen e.g Of course God don't want mankind to kill each other,.....BUT he gave some powers in hand of mankind to test them in this world..how man follow his commands and do patient on hardship he suffer in this world. On result of this TEST man will sent to heaven or Hell. Where he will be given Eternal life.
@zooberrr The terrorists on 9/11 were part of an extremist group that, because 95% of people are too short sighted to see that this group doesn't represent the entire religion, sparked hatred towards the entire people. Its the same with Westboro and Christianity. And because of you, people think atheists are horrible. Stop telling other people what to believe by aggressively defacing their god. What I'm trying to say *and this applies to everyone* is STAY THE FUCK OUT OF PEOPLES BELIEFS
not on same subject but why cant death row inmates take an overdose of heroin and go out that way, less money for tax payers and same effects of the lethal injection
People who base their morality on their religious teachings are retarded. All of them. If your life and your view of what's right and wrong depends on your Bible or Quran, then you are a pathetic person. You should be ashamed of yourself.
You are bang on the money lady and sir. I felt the same way when we had to have my dog put-down, and when my uncle was denied the same liberty. Rest in peace you brave and nobel man.
So very tragic that he considered himself a burdon to his wife. And so tragic that he killed himself, something seems "off" about this as a debate and the fact that people are really doing this, it just seems wrong.
let's all have a "public debate" on euthanasia. the more we "debate" it, the more you'll get used to the idea of killing yourself when you're no longer "fit". in 30 years time, when you're "no longer fit" to go to work and pay taxes, you'll be made to feel guilty by "society" for living. remember the "debate" 20 years about genetically modified food? remember Dolly the Sheep reports: "don't worry public. GM food will never be allowed into supremarkets". Why are we REALLY debating this issue?
@MustNotRead Because terminally ill people are suffering until their very last breath. I'd rather die in my own time by my own choice than die in extreme pain vomiting my own feces, thank you.
Some years ago, I had a terrible accident and the doctors revived me after several minutes. They were so proud of themselves, that they had "gotten me back". No one ever checked up with me to see how I was doing; the neuropathy in my hands and feet from the nerves dying off, is excruciating. Now, I'm OLD, ALONE and being EVICTED from my apartment; THANKS DOC, I wouldn't have wanted to miss all this...
Funny how people want you to take responsibility for your life, but feel that they can deny you the right to take responsibility for your death. Its still your life, and if this is what you choose to do with it, then you ARE taking responsibility for your life. I wish they just let people be! Whats okay for one, is not nessecarily okay for another. He wants to die with dignity, let him please.
The man in this video says that he doesn't want to be a burden on his wife any longer..Why do you think the wedding vows say in sickness and in health, till death do us part?..I love my husband dearly, and no matter what..I would take care of him no matter what...and he could never be a burden on me.
In the UK,if a loved one accompanies the person to the Dignitas clinic they can be prosecuted for 'assisting a suicide'.If,say,in the case of this chap,he'd inadvertantly let it be known, while on his flight out of Australia, where he was going, would the airline have been seen as complicit in his suicide?! This may seem like a bizarre question, but it does throw out so many questions.Which is why there HAS to be universal clarification & serious debate about euthanasia!
I believe in euthanasia, but this man should not have qualified for this option. He was still able to walk on his own, he had the energy to push doors open, and he could speak very fluidly without exhaustion. He decided to take this option in order to AVOID the pain that he MIGHT not be able to tolerate in the future. Euthanasia should only be an option for people who HAVE pain and will likely die within a few months. This man did not meet those qualifications.
Sorry, how do you know he didn't have pain?! He may have been in some considerable pain,we can't know just by viewing this. And,just because he spoke eloquently & without any obvious distress shouldn't exclude him from employing the services of Dignitas! Why should he have had to wait until his pain was intolerable before he reached his decision? He made the decision whilst he the ability to be wholly clear what his choice was!
@popazz1 You have to wait until your pain becomes intolerable before you choose euthanasia because it may NEVER become intolerable. I'm a doctor, and I've seen rare instances when a patient is basically dead already. His/her life is over. All that's left is the suffering before the body finally turns off. That's when you employ euthanasia. It's obvious this man isn't dead already. He's an old man with a terminal illness, but he hasn't reached the point where euthanasia is an option.
@kissmybrownass ,Sorry,I just don't see why anyone should have to wait till their pain becomes intolerable before they can choose euthanasia! Should he also have to wait for the off-chance his condition might be curable? I know this is a contentious, highly emotive issue. But I also feel that we all should have the right to decide when we 'go',rather than pander to the needs of anyone else. With the love and support of those who are closest to the patient,he/she should have the choice,no-one else!
@popazz1 Also, if you look at the top 5 causes of death in the U.S. and most other advanced countries, you'll see that all of them involve pain. We're all going to die one day, and most likely, it's going to hurt. You have to prepare for that, because it's a part of life. We can't all just go to a place like Dignitas to avoid pain that we might have to endure one day.
@kissmybrownass What a silly silly point. We have to prepare for excruciating pain as it's part of life? Says who? What if it can be avoided ,why can't we all go to places like Dignitas? You are clearly not a fan of human progress or the vision to have an enjoyable and pleasant life.
@andrenj1970 shut the fuck up. Stop trying to shove YOUR views down the throats of others. Keep your shit to yourself. It is their choice not yours you fucking cunt.
Hmm, wife about 40 years younger than her husband, supporting the euthanasia of her husband who has been a doctor all of his life.... Why do I think beach house and early retirement?
@secretadgentman1 What does that have to do with the majority of ill people who want to be able to choose how they die. Wealth isn't going to mean shit all when you're dead or suffering.
Mercy killing, or euthanasia is an dangerous idea and should never be a loved, because it is, in reality impossible to administer. In a time of economic crisis, massive cut down on the public health care sector, hospitals, euthanasia will be misused on patients that is regarded as not valuable on the labour market, especially old people will be “euthanized” by the doctors for economic and resource viewpoints. But also long time unemployed, people on sick pensions, homeless and groups a like.
I wish I could have a peaceful death, I am stuck in the U.S.A. with only suffering to look forward to and my life is a living hell now only to get worse and worse. I wish I would quietly have a masive heart attack in my sleep so my suffering will end from kidney illness and unbariable pain. The last surgery failed to save my kidneys and now they want to do another I said NO and when diallis comes I will say NO to that I am 54 with a broken body and want my suffering to END.
@The391956 i also wish every day that my suffering will end, i have awful disease, i just in my 20's but i suffer past 9 years and no hope for get well. i dont get to leave house much. i am determined, i will not commit suicide myself i am going to live with this thing and stay here with my family. but i know what you mean because every day i dream about my suffering to end. i even think it must be better not to exist than to be me.
If he had any balls and if he really did not want to be a burden he should have jumped off a bridge, shot himself or something else. I noticed on the flight back the Wife was flying first class. She must have inhereted a lot of money after his passing.
@exsealmike he was a medical doctor his entire life. I'm sure his wife inherited a good fortune. By jumping off a bridge, shooting himself, he would have been a burden on society in the fact he would have used up tax dollars in police investigations, etc. He actually saved the australian government a lot of money in medical resources that would have been used on him to keep him alive given his condition.
@DavidChris8615 Don't use the economic argument: that simply plays into the hands of those who believe that we who believe in euthanasia do so because we see ill folk as burdensome, financially and/or socially, which is generally not the case. Euthanasia should be legalised so that those who feel that their life is now of little quality can end it -- not to save governments money.
@jismith1989 Oh I completely agree. I support euthanasia for the fact of promoting "dignified death" But it is a fact that people who do choose it save health care systems a lot of money. It could have played in his decision since he was an MD and knew that he could save the health care system money. I am in med school right now, and I see no one as a burdon. But the goal of medicine is to alleviate suffering.
Thank you for this kindly video, Angelica and John. There is so much love and mercy and humility in it.. It's an ultimate humility and good sense and courage to withdraw from life when the conditions justify it. This video is an example that comforts me because I feel less lonely or alienated about facing such an end, one day, to my own life. Thank you again. Bruce Thomson in Palmerston North, New Zealand.
Very brave that some people use their own life to make the path for others easier. Good that he could decide himself at last. Sad that he had to travel so far.
This is true, unselfish love on Dr. Eliott's wife's part. She truly loved her husband. Allowing someone you love to die like that takes a load of love. I respect them both for being so strong.
@jackarf1 Letting a bunch of strangers wield such power, while loved one's are denied the drug agent(s) on a free market, is what I consider rather lamentable, where the state practices its absolute power over the individual and the collective, including taking a life, and considering such medically legal! Indeed, the state exercises its legal prerogative over the human body, unto death.
@006969123 Sadly, there will always be materialistic people like you; who will run to an ER with a headache. Do you realize that, in most cases, people are simply kept 'comfortable', prolonging the inevitable, because of red tape. Do you thnk it's just a question of how much the widow gets? Or, are you one of the retards who actually SHOULD be sent to Switzerland? Don't expect answer as I know you lack neurons.
This is the real American Dream. The day Euthanasia is allowed in America is the day I get off welfare/social security disability, get a job at McDonalds to pay for my funeral and Euthanasia treatment. To hell with buying a nice house and starting a family and going to college. What a waste of time.
The frustration for me is the effect that other people's views can have on your choice. It is terrifying how the morality of others can influence what is, your choice.
I watched my son suffer terribly over a 3 year battle with Multiple Sclerosis. I beleive we all may fear death but the fear of suffering is just as immense. All of us hope to die a peaceful death in our sleep but sadly that is not often the case. Many deaths are slow and painful. I do not know what "GOD" thinks about us ending our own suffering but I do know that as a mother, I would never want to have to watch my son die as he did. It is a sad thing that money is what makes this possible.
I have advanced cancer, and am in pain much of the day, despite pain meds. Should patients like me be allowed to take Nembutal and have a peaceful exit like Dr. Elliott, or suffer until the end like Angelique Flowers? (see her video). I think we should do everything we can to live--and I have. But is there a point at which we patients should--as long as we are of sound mind--have the option to exit peacefully without endstage suffering? And what if we don't have the $8,000 Dignitas charges?
I watched my mother die from multiple myeloma and it is a truly horrible disease. Towards the end she started to go blind and death, suffered haluccinations, haemorraged constantly, constant vomiting and pleading to die. How can anyone deny someone suffering like that the right to a peaceful dignified death. If you allowed an animal to suffer like that you would be prosecuted. I feel guilt every day because i prayed and and wished for her to die. I used to look at her and wish she would die.
I never understood why these religious idiots of all people cling to life the way they do. It's THEM who fantasize about eternal bliss after death! It's THEM who devalue this earthly life! So why then deny OTHERS the right do die as they please in the same way as they were allowed to live as they please? Oh, I forgot, they don't even allow others THAT (for instance if others are homosexual). If you believe there's a God and a great existence after death, then let the fuck go!
I think it is a basic right of people to decide when to die. Especially when suffering from a horrible disease, and you are old and experienced everything in your life. You can no longer continue you life except in great pain. So why is euthanasia illegal? It's like torturing people.
A MAGNIFICENT ORGANIZATION WHICH SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AN EXAMPLE OF TRUE HUMANITARIAN CONCERN FOR A FELOW HUMAN BEING STRUGGLING WITH AN UNBERABLE EXISTENCE. The obnoxious, monstruous religious establishments which oppose this wonderful organization are a sham and should be opposed, as well as exposed for their hypocrisy! The monsters have the audacity TO IMPOSE THEIR VILE MORALITY UPON OTHERS...
To BiteHunter: Your comment offends me because that's a horrible thing to say especially since a person has died. That's like me being Filipino saying that all Japanese people should die painfully for WW 2. Blaming others hinders us from moving forward not to mention preventing peace from ever being achieved. Pride in culture is good but saying negative things to demean others even if their history was a bit sinister isn't.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
As a Mexican American, it is hard for me to have compassion on White plight terminal illness. Whites have caused so much pain and suffering to Africans, Central and South American indigenous, and Australian indigenous to the extent of ultimate marginalization. If I were his doctor, I would take a machete and lop his head off. No White deserves to aquiesce like a coward into death as if to escape the slightest, most temporary of pain.

Every race has a gripe about every other race. One sex complains about the other. One nation with the rest. Grow the fuck up already. People like you make the world a miserable place with your "well this guy picked on me so from now on I will hate everyone and everything with an affiliation to him".
I definitely agree with lagrinoucd, having Native North Americans (P.S. You forgot to mention them while listing those who suffered under European colonization) as two of my best friends, one can evidently see the amelioration in cultural relations over generations. The rest of the world has moved on as a united people, each preserving their culture, and so should you instead of writing hypocritical, racist comments on youtube.
Brave and dignified, Dr. Elliott helps pave the road to the fullest meaning of the word "freedom". As creatures we are born and destroyed, and ours should the freedom to choose how our end plays out. We're going to be over anyways, whether it will be in a dignified and peacewful way or in a humiliating and painful one, and that should be our own choice.
Shame on the religious bumbling crew of old prelates who presume God is managing everything and has said "Hands off!" to the otherwise reasoning human race. I can only wish the world would grow up and fully face the realities of life and death it faces rather than embrace this pie-in-the-sky fantasy based on old Middle Eastern superstitions and propaganda.
u superreligious people should be ashamed u only say that his soul is lost for killing himself because u have never felt so much pain that u wanted to die. and do u really think its gods wish that u suffer a horrible death. that sounds more like satan to me
I think that is wonderful he is making his own choice of when he wants to die.People who are negative about it only look at it from a religious point of view and not what is humane I watched my mother die of cancer when I was a child and she suffered a long painful death and I don't wish that on anyone. Some people shouldn't be so negative and judgemental. We wouldn't let our animals suffer a long painful death why would we do that with the people we love.
People who are suffering from an incureable diesease have the right to end their suffering!! I watched my mom die a very horrible painful death from brain cancer. Thank god for Dignitas
@Angelhaven95 perhaps you should take a serious look at your religious beliefs before you say that.
it is cristianity that is responsible for the beliefs that assisted suicide is wrong, and a sin. and a sin, and you'll burn in hell for eternity for doing it. one of the many problems in the world caused by religious beliefs
@sourmanofcoal It still means nothing to the person that chose to die. If the person is dead, the cure to that illness is useless since that person is dead.
@Stuntman175 Right, but the whole point to living, espacially as a human being, since we are tool users and can invent stuff, is, if you're suffering from a certain "untreatable" condition at the moment, perhaps other fellow humans - "scientists" will invent a cure, so perhaps living as long as one possibly can is in his/her interrest.
@sourmanofcoal Problem is that the cure even if it becomes available, will not enter the market for many, many years because it's not economically viable to release the cure. I do not condone suicide, but I also do not encourage it. Most people that want to commit or happen to commit suicide are people of good health that are depressed and/or have been disappointed with life. Euthanasia is not ending the life of those that are depressed, it's about helping those that can't be helped anymore.
A big mistake from personal perspective is to commit suicide. But i'm approaching it from a rational purely logical perspective where the prime directive of my reasoning is to "remain alive at all cost whether or not mental or physical hardship has occured"
@sourmanofcoal I'm in favour of people being able to control their lives. If someone chooses to die, it's their personal choice. If I had a terminal illness, I would like to have the right to choose of when to die and not making the life of people around me miserable. My parents already told me that if something like this happens to them, they would want for someone to ease both theirs and my pain. It would hurt me to watch them go, but it would relieve me to know that they didn't suffer.
I don't understand what the big fuss is, why do they need someone else to help them die, why not just do it yourself it's so easy and with no pain if you do it right, simple. And your not breaking the law.
What a great man. Shame is the word, parliament question time in australia starts with the so called lords prayer, fools are running things these days.
its sad but at the same time happy they are in so much pain that god actually gives them the choice to die in the form of that liquid it shows he is kind to those who deserve it it MUST be legal cuz everyone who is suffering physically and mentally deserve the choice...
Life is pointless. i am a 37 year old guy , never had a physical relationship with a female . I am lonely and sick of my life.
I have purchased a propane bottle , and i will be taking exit internationals ,nitrogen euthanasia suicide method. I have researched this method and it is fail proof , in 12 seconds i will lose consiousness and in about two minutes i will be dead.
Was bad too. He had serious mental illness all his life and we had to see his suffering. If assisted suicide is to be legalized then those who choose to take their life with out help from an organization should have the same right to die.

Paraprotein which causes immunodefiency can not be cured but, just like HIV/AIDS you probably still can live for 5-10 years as long as the White blood cells are counteracting. I am against this man committing suicide with a possibility of survival!

The latter is, indeed, twisted.

my only question is that if your prepared to take an overdose of barbituates then why not have other drugs too like mdma or lysergic acid, after all they could make the whole experience less of a big deal? answers please.
wordscontrolminds 8 months ago
@wordscontrolminds Because not everyone responds the same to MDMA or Lysergic acids. You may have the trip of a lifetime, but some people may experience immense distress or pain because they can not control what is happening. With barbiturates, you fall asleep and never wake up. It's a pacifying experience compared to the sheer terror of having alucinations. Which one would you prefer? The answer is easy for me.
Stuntman175 8 months ago
@Stuntman175 It should be there as an option along with a whole load of mood enhancing drugs. I personally know of three people who chose to die while under the influence. My main bug bear is that some of the people I have seen opting for euthanasia are doing it because of a fear of something that 'might' happen. The recent british programme illustrated this where a young man with MS opted to die yet I have a friend who is 10 times worse yet enjoys life.3 months counselling should be required.
wordscontrolminds 7 months ago
@wordscontrolminds It's still their choice. No one has the right to tell someone how they should live their life or how to end it. If I wanted to die today, even if the next day was going to be better, I would still do it, because I have the right to choose. Is the right choice to make? Depends on the situation really. If you have a life threatening or debilitating disease, even if you were against it, it's still good to have the choice for other people that are in favor of it.
Stuntman175 7 months ago
If it comes to it i want to die peacefully with those i love round me, holding me (if they chose to be there, lol) and with some music that i like in the background (maybe a cheeky spliff too if i'm able). that would be my choice.

let's all have a "public debate" on euthanasia. the more we "debate" it, the more you'll get used to the idea of killing yourself when you're no longer "fit". in 30 years time, when you're "no longer fit" to go to work and pay taxes, you'll be made to feel guilty by "society" for living. remember the "debate" 20 years about genetically modified food? remember Dolly the Sheep reports: "don't worry public. GM food will never be allowed into supremarkets". Why are we REALLY debating this issue?

In the UK,if a loved one accompanies the person to the Dignitas clinic they can be prosecuted for 'assisting a suicide'.If,say,in the case of this chap,he'd inadvertantly let it be known, while on his flight out of Australia, where he was going, would the airline have been seen as complicit in his suicide?! This may seem like a bizarre question, but it does throw out so many questions.Which is why there HAS to be universal clarification & serious debate about euthanasia!
popazz1 1 year ago
I believe in euthanasia, but this man should not have qualified for this option. He was still able to walk on his own, he had the energy to push doors open, and he could speak very fluidly without exhaustion. He decided to take this option in order to AVOID the pain that he MIGHT not be able to tolerate in the future. Euthanasia should only be an option for people who HAVE pain and will likely die within a few months. This man did not meet those qualifications.
kissmybrownass 1 year ago
@kissmybrownass ,
Sorry, how do you know he didn't have pain?! He may have been in some considerable pain,we can't know just by viewing this. And,just because he spoke eloquently & without any obvious distress shouldn't exclude him from employing the services of Dignitas! Why should he have had to wait until his pain was intolerable before he reached his decision? He made the decision whilst he the ability to be wholly clear what his choice was!
popazz1 1 year ago
@popazz1 You have to wait until your pain becomes intolerable before you choose euthanasia because it may NEVER become intolerable. I'm a doctor, and I've seen rare instances when a patient is basically dead already. His/her life is over. All that's left is the suffering before the body finally turns off. That's when you employ euthanasia. It's obvious this man isn't dead already. He's an old man with a terminal illness, but he hasn't reached the point where euthanasia is an option.
kissmybrownass 1 year ago
@kissmybrownass ,Sorry,I just don't see why anyone should have to wait till their pain becomes intolerable before they can choose euthanasia! Should he also have to wait for the off-chance his condition might be curable? I know this is a contentious, highly emotive issue. But I also feel that we all should have the right to decide when we 'go',rather than pander to the needs of anyone else. With the love and support of those who are closest to the patient,he/she should have the choice,no-one else!
popazz1 1 year ago 11
@kissmybrownass You're a Doctor, a healthcare PROFESSIONAL, with a handle like "kissmybrown@ss"?
AloneAndOld 11 months ago
@popazz1 Also, if you look at the top 5 causes of death in the U.S. and most other advanced countries, you'll see that all of them involve pain. We're all going to die one day, and most likely, it's going to hurt. You have to prepare for that, because it's a part of life. We can't all just go to a place like Dignitas to avoid pain that we might have to endure one day.
kissmybrownass 1 year ago
@kissmybrownass What a silly silly point. We have to prepare for excruciating pain as it's part of life? Says who? What if it can be avoided ,why can't we all go to places like Dignitas? You are clearly not a fan of human progress or the vision to have an enjoyable and pleasant life.

But also long time unemployed, people on sick pensions, homeless and groups a like.

exsealmike 1 year ago
@exsealmike he was a medical doctor his entire life. I'm sure his wife inherited a good fortune. By jumping off a bridge, shooting himself, he would have been a burden on society in the fact he would have used up tax dollars in police investigations, etc. He actually saved the australian government a lot of money in medical resources that would have been used on him to keep him alive given his condition.
DavidChris8615 1 year ago
@DavidChris8615 Don't use the economic argument: that simply plays into the hands of those who believe that we who believe in euthanasia do so because we see ill folk as burdensome, financially and/or socially, which is generally not the case. Euthanasia should be legalised so that those who feel that their life is now of little quality can end it -- not to save governments money.
jismith1989 1 year ago
@jismith1989 Oh I completely agree. I support euthanasia for the fact of promoting "dignified death" But it is a fact that people who do choose it save health care systems a lot of money. It could have played in his decision since he was an MD and knew that he could save the health care system money. I am in med school right now, and I see no one as a burdon. But the goal of medicine is to alleviate suffering.

@jackarf1 Letting a bunch of strangers wield such power, while loved one's are denied the drug agent(s) on a free market, is what I consider rather lamentable, where the state practices its absolute power over the individual and the collective, including taking a life, and considering such medically legal!

And what if we don't have the $8,000 Dignitas charges?

tubestick00 1 year ago
@Angelhaven95 What if the cure for that illness is invented shortly after that person dies?
sourmanofcoal 8 months ago
@sourmanofcoal It still means nothing to the person that chose to die. If the person is dead, the cure to that illness is useless since that person is dead.
Stuntman175 8 months ago
@Stuntman175 Right, but the whole point to living, espacially as a human being, since we are tool users and can invent stuff, is, if you're suffering from a certain "untreatable" condition at the moment, perhaps other fellow humans - "scientists" will invent a cure, so perhaps living as long as one possibly can is in his/her interrest.
sourmanofcoal 8 months ago

And your not breaking the law.

its sad but at the same time happy they are in so much pain that god actually gives them the choice to die in the form of that liquid it shows he is kind to those who deserve it it MUST be legal cuz everyone who is suffering physically and mentally deserve the choice...
