Dr. John Esposito is one of my all time favorite authors and thinkers. He is not a muslim, yet he understands Islamic way of thinking.

@Eye0fTheStorm What Christianity doesn't have is a command to wage war against living and existing religious communities, whereas a number, indeed the mainstream of Muslim theologians since the early middle-ages have believed that Muslims are in a permanent state of war with Jews, Christians and pagans, until either they submit to Muslim authority, or 2 the Islamic faith.

Canaanites don't exist, the telling of that story is not a commandment but a historical record of what had come to pass.
