I have never heard Florez tackling Gounod before and his voice has matured and gained quite some substance and I believe we will be hearing him taking on these weightier roles more frequently in the near future. This was beautiful and he showed great emotion and sensitivity. Bravo Florez!
Florez's advantage in this aria over other tenors is the ease with which he reaches for the high notes; they present no difficulty for him whatsoever.
Bravo! Vous êtes un magnifique ténor!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
For all those naysayers who insist that Florez is too light for this role, I submit that this role is actually intended for a voice of this timbre, and in the 20th century the tradition skewed increasingly toward heavier voices in the role which were, though frequently very pleasing (Corelli, anyone?), entirely wrong for the music and the character. Think Alain Vanzo, and other French tenors who were no heavier of voice than Florez. This is a beautiful and entirely appropriate reading. Bravo.
He should stick to the lighter stuff. I am a fan of his Rossini work but this does not do well for him. Unfortunately, we have all heard the fuller, warmer, more beautiful voices do this one. I do note that his attacks were sloppy. Perhaps he was not well?
Some people are just too obsessed with 'what is the highest note in an aria' questions. Could it not be possible that some tenors like him or Vargas sing the aria in this key to serve it better since their passagi lie a little higher than other tenors, rather than just to show off their B naturals? It seems to me that people who like to comment about 'original keys' or 'key changes' kind of stuff make comments just to show off their knowledge about the arias they comment on.
Could not agree with you more. Anyone who is a performer knows that "showboating" is not a bad term. The goal of every opera singer (every singer period) is to do 3 things. Touch the audience, convince them to take part in a 3 hour reality (12 hours with the Ring Cycle lol) and ENTERTAIN!! Showing off your skills is allowed expected and appreciated. If not Stay home and listen to water drip
@bianco1972 - Thanks for saying that. Many singers find that a transposition up or down suits better the color of the individual voice, and in the context of a concert, I believe that is very acceptable (as long as it's not too crazy). Even some operas and musicals offer two different keys for various solo pieces, in order to accommodate possible casting choices. I understand JDF's desire to sing in a higher key, as his voice sits higher. I have the same issue.
Great singing and interpretation, though I don't care for the showboating taking it up a half step. It's not as if nobody has heard him sing a high B natural before.
I always assumed that the original key was Bb and that he transposed it up. I don'r know of another tenor who could sing those Bs. He thrills like no other!
It's amazing the feelings he comunicates, the emotion almost divine. I do not anyone nowadays with a touching singing like Juan Diego's. Besides, his voice is superb.
Just listen to him sing Granada at the classical awards..SUBLIME.. he has got his own followers and he has followed pavarotti with his high c's Bravo JUAN
I'm not a crazy fanatic of JDF, but, you are wrong in your comment. He's singing in the open air, not inside an auditorioum or theater, so what kind of resonance want you to have in the open air? Withous mycrophones nor him nor Callas nor Carusso in THAT 'scena' will be heard. (Sorry for my english)
Please. Could you be any more ignorant? ubedajils hit it right on the head: He's outside. Anyone that can literally fill the WORLD with sound like that is supernatural. Seeing as Juan Diego Florez is NOT Banshee from X-Men, I think he can stick with the microphone. As for you, why don't you think before you flame someone who's more talented than you could ever hope to be. =D kthnx
Wowow!!!! Repertoire I never thought I'd hear JDF sing! I love it!!! Reminds me of Kraus a little. I like the fact that we now have 3 wonderful tenors, Villazon, Vargas, and Florez bringing their unique sounds to this repertoire and each offering something different :)
I love you Juan. Merci. Gracias. Thanks.
