  • Can you do an update video with more information please. I sent a few PM's but you don't seem to answer so perhaps you will find this comment.

  • can you do convex

  • Where can i get it?!

    plz reply!

  • Is the Spyderco better ?

With the Sharpmaler, you can rapidly switch from one stone to the other, thus sharpening both sides of the edge at the same time. With the Edgepro, you have to remove your knife and flip it over to change the edge side.

In your experience, is it better to work both sides at the same time or to finish one side and then do the other ?

    Thank you !

  • Does the blade get ''shaving-sharp''? Like the Fällkniven U2 fresh out of the box?

  • the hand that holds the knife is still suseptable to movement ,,, get a kme sharpening kit to eliminate all that ,,,

  • Jeff, do you still use this? Im thinking of this or a Wicked Edge. This looks less expensive, which is kind of what Im after haha

  • hey, if this is the #4 kit, where did you get it for 200?

  • Hey jeff can you sharpen scandi grinds on an edge pro? thanks

  • Thanks dude!!

  • what would you say is your best knife sharpener/system

  • This demonstration video shows but, as a sharp knife on the curved part at the tip of a knife. There would be some problem in observing angle.

  • hey, just got back into knives a couple of months ago and was wondering what everyone thinks about this system, like is it woth the 100-200 bucks or if you can hold a steady angle just to stick with a regular ceramic/ arkansas stone? please say what you think

  • @22rockcrawler i use stones, sandpaper and leather/muslin loaded with compound, depending on what kind of edge i want. this machine can only do flat and skandi grinds, it's useless for convex or micro-convex (my preferred secondary edge).

  • @Urudrim No you can still convex blades that have a convex primary grind (though it is not really possible with an ffg with a convex secondary bevel), it just take a little more technique and skill. Though I do prefer my belts for my convex edge, my swamp rat waki currently has a mirror polished convex edge courtesy of the edge pro; it certainly isn't as quick as a mousepad and sandpaper, or a belt sander/grinder, but you can get amazing results.

  • @22rockcrawler This is for people who cant hold angles but if you are good at it no need i used the smiths or lansky guided system

  • @22rockcrawler I really don't like their polishing tapes, I would prefer a leather strop with honing compound for finishing, but for me the system is really good. The stones are great and cut well, and you can get a face shaving sharp, mirror polished v-edge with the edge pro. I don't think the materials and construction warrant 200 bucks, but the edge pro is my favorite sharpening system, and you'll be happy with your purchase.

  • Jeff, what sharpening system do you recommend if cost is an object?

  • @Castleknight - I meant no object, sorry

  • Does this system come with a 1000 grit stone? And a tip is: instead of using the ceramic rod, use a strop with some chromium oxide. It will make it sharp enough to shave! you can make a strop with a strip of leather, a piece of wood and some chromium oxide or with a piece of balsa wood and chromium oxide.

  • can you sharpen tantos with this?

  • two questions, where did you order this from? and have you ever put a mirror finished edge on your knife? thanks for the demonstration.

  • @xXBallistic82Xx chefstogo has the best prices for the system itself, and you need a higher grit chosera stone or a polish tape to get a mirror edge, the 1k that comes with it will still be hazy.

  • @xxmtgxx Thanks

  • Thank you for giving a good demo on this machine. Very helpful. How does to compare to the Gatco approach. It seems similar though this seems more "industrial". Interested in your opinion. Thanks.

  • How does this sharpener compare to the Wicked Edge sharpener? Anyone know? How much does this one cost? Also, as far as convex edges go, will this work with that type of edge? Autismpaulm's comments below do not reflect the majority of viewers I might add. I prefer the explanations prior so I can see it in action and know why you are doing something. Thanks

  • wow that must be a little hard for a tanto shaped blade.....

  • @austinpaulm stfu

  • @austinpaulm what annoys me is the fact that peopel like you leave comments like this..my videois are for everyone to enjoy the novice to the pro user/collector, half of the peopel interested are not on the same page as you may be and therefore need thigns broken down further for explination, yoyr comment is selfish, think of others watching the video as well

  • @austinpaulm you could just fast forward the video

  • @austinpaulm You obviously don't know what you're talking about, if you want your subscribers to understand a product thoroughly, you'll have to explain everything. If you don't want to be educated, please leave and don't come back.

  • Looks awkward since you have to use 2 hands.

  • once my stones and tapes wear out where can i get replacements? and will they wear out fast or slow?

  • i just ordered a spyderco sharpmaker with 2 uf rods. will the sharpmaker get me an amazingly sharp edge? cause thats y i ordered one.

  • @jaredbotha:

Hey bitch ass. my sharpmaker came in the mail a few weeks ago and its awesome. i got a razor fucking sharp edge with the ultra fine rods. and do you really feel so "powerful" because you're starting shit with a person on a knife video on youtube? HAHA. seems to me you lack alot of intelligence. have a nice day you fucker.

  • @SlayerSokka Having to resort to profanity shows your lack of intelligence.

  • The standard Sharpmaker will give you and edge that will whittle a hair held between your fingers. I cant imagine what the UF rods will do.

  • @wolpack1116 mine wont...how do you do that

  • @insomniac1122 Get a coarse stone, rebevel less than 20 degrees/side. Follow the instructions with the Sharpmaker, but after the brown stones, do 1 or 2 passes with the blade parallel to the opposite rod, total angle is ~80 degrees. 1 or 2 at most, LIGHT PRESSURE. Then ~10 more strokes at the normal angle. This removes any burr. Procede to corners and flats of the white stones. Repeat deburring w/ white stones. Finish with ~10 strokes/side on white flats.

  • @wolpack1116 only if your blade is set at either the 40 or 30 degree angles. Otherwise the sharpmaker is useless. And if your blade needs to be reprofiled, the sharpmaker will not perform well. To be honest, the sharpmaker pretty much blows for everything except maintaining an already decent sharp edge.

  • @rc3mil I dont think anyone will argue that you need a coarse stone to go with a Sharpmaker. The trick with it is to rebevel the edge thinner than the desired slots (30 or 40). You can also use it like a bench stone or use the triangles free hand. Just because it doesnt fit the way you sharpen doesnt mean its useless.

  • Never mind!...I saw your other video on this system and figure it out!....Man, you had the answer already!

  • Hi...Could you show how to change the stone?...I just got one edge pro apex but I really can't figure out how to change the stone...Thanks...BTW, this is a great demo and your reviews are pretty clear!

  • Is it a little bit hard to hold the knife exactly steady? Thats the only thing that worries me about this system, especially when doing small knives or ones with multi bevelled sides?

  • I think I prefer the SharpMaker, just because you can get the whole blade on a large knife, if your careful

  • seems kinda stupid to buy this when you can buy a motorized belt sharpener for 40-60 bucks

  • its stupid if you cna keep a steady angle, but alot of poeple cant, thats why they prefer this, not only does it keepm your angle but you control how much metal comes off, by hand it happens alot slower, which some prefer

  • @cutlerylover the motorized belt sharpeners will also ruin the temper on knifes if u sharpen them to fast

  • @slimjim355 Belt sanders will heat up your blade and damage the temper. This system gives you a superior sharpening compared to a belt sander.

  • @XCritonX Belt sanders CAN heat up your edge if you're not careful. I get edges off mine that are as sharp as my hand stones in 1/4 the time.

  • @slimjim355 a belt sharpener can also heat up the blade if you don't know what you are doing and ruin the temper of the blade.

  • @slimjim355 If you like convexing your v-edges, then it might seem kinda stupid; but if you want a perfect mirror polished v edge, that is sharp enough for shaving of the face, you can't beat the edge pro or the wicked edge.

  • Out of all of the sharpeners you have which one do you use the most?

  • Is that knife supposed to wobble like that in the guide?

  • it just rests aginst the guide

  • Thanks for the response. Just looked to me like the bigger knife was moving up and down off of that guide when you were sharpening it.

  • thats my fault for not holding it steady for the video demo

  • Ah, ok. I've got an apex on order, been looking for more stuff on the web for it whilst waiting :).

  • great vids! thanks for the tutorials!

  • Thanks for posting this.

  • Pick up a SuperEraser for your ceramic Rods...it'll work for your SpyderCo kit too. Clean those Right Up....

  • I'm thinking about buying the apex so it was helpful to see it being used. Thanks for taking the time to do the reviews.

  • Hey CL, I got a quick question for ya.

When you re-profile edges, do you use the Apex edge pro?

I was considering it, but what I want in a sharpener is simply the option of putting a hair-shaving-sharp edge on my knives.

    Thanks,

    Sal

  • yes I use the edgepro to reprofile as its fast and easy...with the fine stones you cna get a hair popping edge with this system and if you gte polishign tapes it even takes it to the next level...

  • Sounds good.

    But sadly, they are costly...

What about the Spyderco sharpmaker or any of the other sharpeners you've reviewed?

I doubt I'd get a hair-shaving-sharp edge with the spyderco, but I don't own one.

So is it possible to get a razor edge on my knives with the other sharpeners you've reviewed?

I can't get an edge close to that on my lansky, so I'm not too confident, but I am considering the purchase, so input would be much appreciated!

    Thank you,

    Sal

  • actually you cna gte a shavign sharp edge on the sharpmaker with the fien rods, just takes some patience...the advantage with the edgepro is the set angles so as the user you cant screw it up if you wanted, lol, but the sharpamker is easy to use none the less...just gota kee the knife straight...and take your time...

  • Well a 30 degree edge is about that of the carbide sharpener you showed (I have a friend that has one). And he was able to get a hair-shaving sharp edge on his knife with it, but getting an edge that sharp with the spyderco?

Kinda sounds like it would take something more sophisticated, but I'll definitely look into it...

    Thank you,

    Sal

  • carbide sharpeners are brutal on edges they shave off way too mcuh metal, sometiems you get lucky and geta sharp edge, but most of the time it just rips the edge apart...you cna get alot of angles sharp, but how wide it is has to do with a compramise between sharpness and longevity...the smaller the edge the sharper it cna get literally, but the shortwer you go the faster the edge will wear, wider edges last longer and dotn damage easily but you just cant get the same sharpness on wider edges..

  • Very true, but my friend's knife wasn't ruined by the carbide sharpener, but he had to use VERY light strokes, it put a super sharp edge on his blade without taking too much metal off.

But he used more pressure on a katana and ruined the edge (Especially seeing as katanas have an appleseed bevel, not sure if you are familar with it, but you NEVER use any normal sharpening method on them).

  • yes Im familiar with rhe appleseed edge also called the lenticular style edge...yeah takes some skill and some different equiptment to sharpen, not as easy as most knives that have a simple flat edge to lin up with a stone or rod...

  • That bevel can also be sharpened by polishing. That is what the Japanese did, and that is how a properly made katana should be sharpened.

If it is a REAL sword, or a higher end sword like Bugei (1200+ dollar katanas), they should be polished by hand, because polishing is sharpening.

honing the edge through the grits can be done on some knives, too. But much harder because the grits on a katana can go WAY up, Nihonto(Japanese made swords)can go past 6000 grit.

    So yeah...complicated...

  • your right....thats all a strop does with the fien paste is polish an edge makign it smoother, hense makign the very edge smaller...and therfore sharper...

  • Exactly, though I'd prefer to do it with the hand stone. They also have finger stones that go ridiculously high grit (7000+ Depending where in Japan you get them), they are for polishing the Hamon (You know, that wavy thing on the blade? Lol, it can be polished out because it is in the micro-structure of the steel).

    Well, good chat CL. :D

I ordered the Spyderco sharpmaker, now all I have to do is wait for the transaction to be completed, so thanks for your help.

    Sal

  • Have you used the Spyderco ultra fine rods?

  • Do you have to use the steel? Are there any other methods for removing steel shavings?

  • no, you could just strop it on leather with some compound which woudl be even better...

  • I remember barbers using that method for their Straight razors, but what kind of compound do I use?

  • you cna buy compound made for stropping in different grits...

  • Alright, thanks for the info, good stuff. :D

  • Will this sharpen serrated edges? What about a convex edge?

  • no not really, I eman for instructiosn it will tell you that you cna sharpen serratiosn by sharpenign the flat side or back of them but that wears them away too fast, so no and no...I use my spyderco sharpmaker for both serratiosn and revurves, now I did sharpen a kukri machete on this, but thats a large curve so it was easiler...on a small folder a recurved blade woudl be too hard to sharpen and not work with this...

  • I wish I would have taken the money I spent on a sharpmaker and put it towards one of these. Although once you set your bevels with this, the sharpmaker is probably great. LOL

  • I own both, and they compliment each other, this is great for heavy sharpenign jobs, where as the sharpmaker is easier for touch ups...

  • Do course stones put a good edge on a knife or does fine do better?

  • Well a course stone will give you edge a really toothy finish, it depends what you use your knife for, if your cuttgin alot of fiberous stuff like rope and fabric, some people like a toothy edge...some even prefer it fro cardboard cutting...A finer stone wil get your edge sharper, but you cna actually get a knife too sharp where the edge is so fiune it slipps off of the material when your cutting...lol, it all depends on what your like and what your using your knife for...

  • Is the system u use the most often on your higher quality knifes

  • Yes, I mainly use this system when I need to do alot of work to a knife or need to polish an edge to a mirror polished finish...

  • is that what it is a clock is it ever hr and it ring.

and you have a dog too right? is you do what dog so you have?

  • The clock chimes evcery 15 minutes and on the hour it chimes each time for each hour, so 4 chimes for 4 ocklock and so on...and yes I ahve 2 dogs, both of them are lhasa apsa's but one is 13 years old, and the other is only 1 and a half, so they go at it al the time, lol, always barking at eachother, and if they are getting alogn fine the younger one barks at every noise outside...haha, so I often have to restart a video because of the barking...

  • i really dont mind about the barking or the clock but how can you sleep with the clock?

thats really kool about the dogs why dont you show them 1 day lol

  • Well I am just so use to the lcok going off it is not something I notice...And I have a cuckoo clock in ym room, lol, I alwasy wanted one, I don't know why, but I love it, that one has a sensor though so when its dark it does not make any nise so it doesn't bother me at night...As for the dogs, I will amke a vid soon of them, haha, mayeb when they are outside playing...well see...I am still working on gettign batteries so I cna start making more vids!

  • lol, i find that the clock adds a regularity to your videos :)

  • Thanks! Sort of like a trademark I guess? I never noticed it until someone pointed it out to me...

  • Good job. Your videos are really helpful.

  • Thanks, I am very happy to hear that, thats why I post them, lol...

  • Do those stones polish the knife?

  • No, it is just a jetal base to attach to the system, the poluishing tapes polish the knife, thats what the pink and yellow stickers are, they stick to the metal base so you can use them in this system...

  • Very nice video, how do you feel about diamond powder sharpeners? Thats usually what i use to sharpen my blades, does a fine job.

  • Diamond sharpeners work just fine...some people think they take off too much metal but personally I don't use them, not because I dislike them but I just never owned one, lol...So I can't speak about them from expereince...
