About slavery: Did you know that archeologists have found camps near the pyramids where slaves lived? They weren't slaves in the modern sense of the word. They were construction workers. They received very sweet rewards in gold and food. Obviously well fed workers work better that whipped starving slaves.
Wow... that story at the end about that woman saying her aunt calls her the Antichrist and saying God killed her unborn child... Just wow. I've never heard anything so despicable. Does she even realise how evil and repugnant that is? I find it hard to believe that anyone living in a developed country could really hold that view. I wonder how she would feel if she was put in the position she was putting her niece in.
If she were my aunt, I had just suffered a miscarriage, and she did that to me, as soon as I was physically recovered, I would pay her a visit, and beat the $#*& out of her!
(Although I'd probabbly wear a mask, so she couldn't identify me to the authorities)
Few things have ever made me more angry then the end of of that last story. Religion often breeds the best kind of people (or the second best, behind you guys) but, what's dangerous about it, is that it also creates people like the aunt. Possibly the worst kind of person.
Lincoln wanted to free the slaves because he saw it how unfair it was for slave owners to have more votes than non-slave owners. Back than, a slave was worth a half vote, so for every two slaves a person owned, they got one extra vote. There may have been an emotional - no man should be a slave - thing, but the main reason was voting inequality.
My facepalm moment- At school some girl had a small book of bible stories, and she said the faux leather cover was lambskin. I asked why they had to use lambskin. She replied,"Well, God made a skin for it, with no animal to harm."
@KokotTheMonkey yes i agree. a high pitched voice simular to the late don knotts would be easier to listen to for an hour. perhaps something simular to sam kinninson would be more pleasing to you.his brilliantly golden toned voice has no place in broadcasting.
I just want to say, I love the lightning-rod on churches example you use. In one of the towns I used to live, in a church caught fire from a lightning strike....when they re-built, they installed a lightning rod.
I once heard a born-again woman say she thought Mickey Mouse and other talking animal cartoon characters were there to help us prepare for the end times when there will be a talking beast/dragon (Revelation 13).
It happens on facebook everyday, I often have to hide the status updates of friends and family so I don't damage our relationships by questioning something they are not wanting to question.
One of the dumbest Noah's Ark arguments ever is that the dinosaurs drowned first. That's a great facepalm.
Dumber still... how do they explain the mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, or megalodon? So all the swimming marine animals drown before a single rabbit or human child???
My most fantastic facepalm moment: Me and my Christian friend was at the library and we walked past the religion section. And it was this huge book on voodoo that stood there and I said something like:
- look there’s a huge voodoo book, cool.
My Friend - "How can anyone believe in that?"
Me - *Facepalm* hahahah, that exactly the same as your religion. You believe in your god and they believe in that.
The last story was really sad actually, not so much a face-palm moment. What kind of a cruel wretched old disgusting human being tells a family member that their miscarriage was deserved? Moments like that make me really infuriated sometimes.
I'm a recently converted Atheist. I haven't had much time to grow accustomed to what being an Atheist is like yet, but your videos are truly some of the most helpful and hilarious videos I have ever seen and they have really helped me grasp life as an Atheist in terms of what to expect. Thanks!
I'm lucky to have been raised with Science and religion and was raised to believe that science exists and god worked through and created science, and not even he can breach theses laws set by him.
Where my face palm moment comes in is my father says god has two unforgivable, you will burn no matter what you do sins.
1-turning a man against god
2-having relations with the same sex
I'm a bisexual, who has had relations with a guy. He obliviously doesn't know this.
Once I talked to a friend of mine who is a rather devout christian, he didn't know I was an atheist at the time. We where discussing religion and said: "Did you know that atheist believe in a flying spaghetti monster?", and I was all like "You are totally missing the point!!!!".
@missmania12 i'm an atheist and got christened, 4 the 1 and only reason to be my nephew's goddad. I had major reservations over getting it done, but also the fact that the kid was 2 and i found it pathetic that no 1, absolutely no1 in the family was religious AT, ALL, but got their son christened, i found that insulting 2 something i think is rubbish anyway! now my girlfriend wants our child (shes pregnant) 2b christened, which i object to because it's bullshit and meaningless. so it happens :(
With the lady around 30 min, I was wishing I could address the people she listened to when they mentioned that being an atheist somehow makes you a criminal.
Something along the lines of "Not believing in god doesn't make you a murder or rapist any more than not believing in the avenging unicorn makes you a horse-culling, beastiality freak."

We Scandinavians sure have it good (<-- From Sweden). Pretty much the only religious people I have any sort of contact with are my parents and their close friends.
I went (a few times) to a mega church in Oveido, FL to try to see 1st-hand of any "joke" god told me this or that. In no time flat, I noticed & heard those cards to fill out alot of info about oneself. Let alone, passing the plate (as always). I have to admit that I wanted to LOTF, but didn't due to trying to be nice/pass off fake smiles & politically correct.
I like the guy who's facepalming over the lady who said Lincoln didn't free the slaves for any moral reason. Uh, she's right. He didn't. Read Lincoln unmasked. The whole thing was fought for other reasons with slavery as a convenient emotional issue to justify it. If you want a simple analogy take the Iraq war. We all know that wasn't fought to "liberate the iraqi people" but that's the justification they use. Also, politics never did affect positive change, no facepalm there.
I facepalmed over Alli's aunt calling her about corrupting her cousin. But I was about ready to spit nails over her calling the poor woman and telling her baby died bc she didn't accept Jesus.
Thinking Atheist, I want you to know that you're doing a most awesome job of pulling me away from spirituality and pulling me into accepting biological death and looking around for answers, rather than reading them from books that have "somehow:( >.> ) made their way to modern times. I wish religion would just dissapear, really. Thank you. I don't think you realize how compeling you really are.
One boy in my class in my former school took the bible literally, believed every word in it,4 other boys were having a discussion with him. and when of them asked "didn't adam and eve have two sons?" and answered "yeah they did" and the other boy asked "if there wasn't a female counterpart when both of them grew up, how could there have been later generation of that line?" the religious boy answered "well they must've done it with their mom then(!)(i'm not makin this up!)EPIC FAIL i'd say!!
My mouth is literally gaping after hearing that last e-mail. I was pretty lucky to live in a family that didn't care much about religion. Like to the point where I didn't even know what faith my parents were until I was 16.
To hear a family shun and hate you for not believing in god is like a knife going through me. How could people be like that. And the sad thing is, I'm sure it's no isolated incident. I bet it happens all the time.
i really wish i coulda been on your show. since im a very open atheist in southern alabama, lets just say that ive had quite a few face palm moments in my high school. for some reason Christians (especially my fellow students) think we are the plague because we tell them that what mommy and daddy told them was wrong. i guess its just in human nature to be stubborn and think you are right instead of valuating an actual ideal and seeing the flaws in it
@ TheAmazingamerica - Still can't forgive anyone hey - Christian?? Jesus was a jew!! and a prophet according to some......Would Jesus approve of your hate for his race? ...the chosen people?
@TheThinkingAtheist - Love your work!! this whole recording was series of facepalm moments - except I kept missing my face because I was laughing so hard!!! Free Thought!! = Anarchy for all!!!!
i got some of Peter Popov's miracle water a while ago, asked for so much damn money, it was sad. He sent me a lot of weird crap and the instructions on how to use it were vaguely witchcraft. If I followed the instructions and then sent money miracles beyond my wildest dreams would come to me. Funny and creepy.
My facepalm moment was when I found the FailedMessiah website. I can't listen to this Jesus mocking, I got as far as Popoff. Why does this guy get an hour? Jesus mocking has been going on for 2000 yrs by the xews.
what a whiney person u are. Long trip...feet hurt.... I hope all the Christians see how the Xews and xsrael hate them and stop the funding of xsrael. The architect was probably xewish, got the name? All of Christian Broadcasting Network is put on by xsrael to dupe the Christians into giving xsrael money. Thanks for this though, I have trouble convincing Christians how hateful xsrael's are. I bet if I researched it, they told xsrael no and got in their targets.
My face palm moment: This fundie at my highschool (well, when I was in high school) said evolution isn't true because it doesn't happen any more and asked for evidence of something evolving. I told them about swine flu. He failed understand that influenzas evolve to survive. I told him about sickle cell and the relationship with malaria. He failed to realized how it was common in areas stricken by malaria. I then told him about us becoming lactose tolerant. He failed that too.
"We don't have to conserve or anything because Jesus is coming back in our lifetime." THAT's one of the biggest reasons us atheists need to speak up - jackasses like this don't care about anything, or the welfare of anyone but themselves because jesus is going to erase it all anyway? Well, at least it may mean he's not going to lift a finger to promote his religion other than that (it's never that simple, but it's a nice thought).
What Allie said = the true definition of "Christian Love".
About the story of the girl who was overhearing the conversation between the two other girls who were talking behind the atheist guy's back. Here's what I would have done. I would have joined in. Fucked one of them. Then right before she has her "moment", whispered in her ear, "I'm an atheist." XD
funny as heck but it has been known for a decent while that there was a height crash between pre-agriculture man and agricultural man. granted it's a few inches, no where near the several feet they try to claim.
my facepalm moment is when i was arguing with shock and i brought up the the fossil recorded and how do you explain that, and he said that it proves the bible right.
You ended this very well, Seth. You are absolutely right. My generation will be the game changer. Fear is being overcome with knowledge, and through knowledge, we will realize that we are all the same, and through that realization, we can have the hope of coexisting on this big and beautiful floating rock.
Ooo cool you used two of my facepalm moments I mentioned in comments, the "monkey turning into man not observed" and the "circular logic is still logic" ones around 1:10:00. Thankies :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
...that was seriously what she wrote, and I responded "are you friggin' kidding me? Refrigerators! How about, they didn't have human rights, equal rights, democracy, etc. back then!" I haven't heard from her since. The most terrifying part is that she was not at all a stupid person, she was quite smart and she did have problems with the bible(she for example equated the holy spirit doing Mary to rape). But with all that, she was still too indoctrinated.
I wasn't able to join the podcast when it was live, but I actually had a facepalm moment with a Christian from the bible belt recently. We were debating if religion was as bad a basis for a country as Liberalism(no, seriously), both in their purest forms. I pointed out that it would persecute others, including scientists, and she backpedaled, "well, they would accept some things newer than the holy book they based it on... they didn't have refrigerators back then"...
Hey Seth, did you watch the second Fletch film(Fletch Lives, or something like that)? It had a televangelist preacher, and Fletch gives him false information through the earpiece. Not a good film, but that part was fun. Excellent podcast as usual. That email at the end was truly chilling.
I'm from Indiana, where it is illegal to sell booze on Sunday. There has been a push to end that rule. Someone told me that it should stay illegal because "that day is for the lord".
If I could make one small criticism? Quite often, not all the time or even most of the time, but sometimes, when someone finishes talking you tend to then go onto you own anecdote that's only vaguely related, then close up the call. Maybe this is just me thinking this but I reakon it'd be more effective if when they'd finish you asked a follow up question or carried on a dialogue/discussion with the caller, bring up your point too, but...
@TheThinkingAtheist AWESOME PODCAST! MARVELOUS JOB! I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK & THANKS A LOT! It's helped me SO MUCH being a Freethinker for about a year, & being in a Christian family ESP. my S. Baptist grandparents (my dad's parents) who are still alive & well. They're completely brainwashed by Christianity. They forced me! They found out a few months ago I'm an Atheist, & they treat me like a TOTAL stranger now! My grandma is EVIL!
@bearchewtoy75 Essentially "God had no other choice". I'm struggling to remember the reasoning, something like he had to end the family lines that were disobeying him, and not leaving all the children without parents. I had to revert to "surely, surely an omnipotent, omniscient god couldn't have been forced into a corner"
Wow! Dan is in the same area code as me! That was cool to hear!
Ali(?) needs to ask her aunt this question, "What makes you think that I really want to believe in your God if He's out kill kill my children if I don't believe in Him?" Stories like these just kill me every time I hear them...
I can't help but wonder about a vile woman like that aunt who gloated over her niece's lost baby;Is the sadism in religion a part of the attraction for some?
Probably just her personality. But how sad that she feels she has that weapon to use on others.
i once told someone i didn't beleive in god and she freaked out. she said lotsof crazy things, like: "You're gonna burn in the lake of fire!" (Lake of fire? Seriously? Lakes are made of water, take a geography class already.) when she asked me how everything came into existence and i replied "Evolution," she just said, "No." i asked her to back up her beleifs, and she ignored me, asking: "If you believe in evolution, who created evolution?" i still don't know what she meant, can someone tell me?
Hehe I'm hoping for once in my lifetime Oklahoma (where I live :( ) will be recongnized by something positive or atleast neato. This state is so full of cons and suckers. Atleast it's relatively quiet plus with the internet I can just ignore everyone outside my front door and still have a meaningful social life ;P
"it's amazing how the rules change when god is involved." you aint fuckin lyin. God can do whatever he want, kill,rape,whatever......but if a man do it he's the devil.
Facepalm moment: I attend a Christian college. (Yeah, it's a long story.) Anyway, in clay class a kid sat down and said, "It feels like a hymnal day, doesn't it?" I looked at him and responded, "Umm...I'm agnostic." He replied, "Oh, so what's that? Do you have hymns, too?" >facepalm<
Ally, I am so sorry that you lost your son and that your religious family are freaks - breathe easier, there are people not like them, people like us, and we are more every day.
The girl's reasoning for President Lincoln ending slavery is not off. Given that President Lincoln himself wrote that his goal was to preserve the Union, with slavery abolished or not, that is not a facepalm moment.
The last email you read reminds of my family and how they shunned my uncle when he came out as a homosexual.
He died of AIDS a few years ago and all my grandfather could worry about was my uncle getting baptized to "erase the sin" my uncle supposedly partook in. He wasn't concerned with spending my time with my uncle during his last moments. It made me sick to my stomach.
I am proud of my uncle though....he refused getting baptized.
Thinking Atheist... Sorry to say this but your voice sounds similar to Glenn Beck. I know that's a terrible person to be compared to but that's what I hear...
Isn't it amusing how so many Christians immediately make numerous (unfounded and even outlandish) judgements about someone who reveals their atheist status? And the sheer contempt they express for the atheist... Like in Sky Comet's story for instance... Isn't that in violation of "love thy neighbour as thy self", "be meek and turn the other cheek" and of course "thou shalt not judge". Hypocricy I say! Those Christians are't even good at being Christians. :P
What I don't get it that Christians would prefer that you are Buddhist or Hindu than being an Atheist, but according to their religion, they're all going to hell anyway!
That's a very good point. I've thought about it a lot, but it makes no sense to me either. As you say, technically Atheism is no 'worse' than following alternative faiths like Buddhism/Hinduism in they eyes of Christianity, but for some reason they HATE us a lot more. It's almost like they seem to think that, despite being 'wrong', followers of other religions are still more tolerable because simply being religious is an inherently positive attribute. What do you think?
About slavery: Did you know that archeologists have found camps near the pyramids where slaves lived? They weren't slaves in the modern sense of the word. They were construction workers. They received very sweet rewards in gold and food. Obviously well fed workers work better that whipped starving slaves.

Most days have a face-palm moment for me since my mother met her current partner. Some highlights:
Aliens built the pyramids (yet he doesn't watch stargate).
Diving rods work and all tests that show them not to are wrong because they involve things like plastic containers that block the water's energy.
Mediums are real because one told him something about a rose once, and the dead person in question loved roses.
Scientists don't know anything "because they weren't there".
Astrology is real.

On a side note: Forcing your loved one to convert just so you can be happy together is b/s.

i really wish i coulda been on your show. since im a very open atheist in southern alabama, lets just say that ive had quite a few face palm moments in my high school. for some reason Christians (especially my fellow students) think we are the plague because we tell them that what mommy and daddy told them was wrong. i guess its just in human nature to be stubborn and think you are right instead of valuating an actual ideal and seeing the flaws in it

My face palm moment: This fundie at my highschool (well, when I was in high school) said evolution isn't true because it doesn't happen any more and asked for evidence of something evolving.

Well, at least it may mean he's not going to lift a finger to promote his religion other than that (it's never that simple, but it's a nice thought).

...that was seriously what she wrote, and I responded "are you friggin' kidding me? Refrigerators! How about, they didn't have human rights, equal rights, democracy, etc. back then!" I haven't heard from her since. The most terrifying part is that she was not at all a stupid person, she was quite smart and she did have problems with the bible(she for example equated the holy spirit doing Mary to rape). But with all that, she was still too indoctrinated.
Eminemno1fan 1 year ago

Still, love the podcast, keep up the good work :D

i once told someone i didn't beleive in god and she freaked out. she said lotsof crazy things, like: "You're gonna burn in the lake of fire!" (Lake of fire?
Sagester129 1 year ago
@Sagester129
Great story, but technically, evolution doesn't explain how life came into existence, it explains why there are so many different species came to be.
As to how life originated, we have no clue.
You should ask her who created God.

What I don't get it that Christians would prefer that you are Buddhist or Hindu than being an Atheist, but according to their religion, they're all going to hell anyway!
bearchewtoy75 1 year ago
@bearchewtoy75
DarthZillasaurus 1 year ago
