Playing it sparingly seems like a waste of a beautiful instrument. I can't see him chewing through the frets anytime soon and with a refin it's not a museum piece.
I'd rather a refret than a refin. I read once that someone said a refret is a bit like changing tyres on a car, as long as it's done well using the same fret wire it won't devalue the instrament as much.
Play the thing and enjoy it .... those pre CBS basses have great tone
I got a chance to try out a '59 P-bass. The body was re-finished, but the neck was showing some paint wear, needsnew strings, the pickups were changed quite a while ago, but everything else was original. He was asking $3,000 for it. He had it stored in the back of the shop for a year with the original case.
Greta sounding bass, but why on earth do you only play it sparingly ? An instrument is meant to be played. A refret is nothing these days, as most vintage basses and guitars have been refretted at some stage. My early 60's J-Bass is in original condition with the original frets and I play it all day everyday !
I had a 1961 original sunburst fender p bass that my father gave me in 1980 i wanted to buy a bc rich eagle back in 1985 so i took the bass everywhere the best offer i got was $450. so i sold the bass. but wow i cant believe how the japanese made the value jump so high on these basses. not to say there not great i own a pre cbs 1965 jazz today along with 10 other sweet basses. but i'll tell you this there just not worth $10.000 to me! no way..
If you want to avoid fretwear, put on some flatwounds. That's what would have been on it originally and what will give you a more authentic sound. D'Addario Chromes are great.
hey guy you have strung the bass wrong, the strings are supposed to go around the tuner the opposite direction. The way you have them on will bend the neck and screw up the truss rod
@maximu8899 yup, it's strung correctly. maybe your eyeballs are in wrong. BTW, sk8erboy1414 , I have a sunburst '78 P and I love the craftsmanship. I can only imagine the quality of that treasure.
@martinholde Yeah look at how the strings wrap around the tuning pegs on the headstock, they are wrapped clockwise. It should be counter-clockwise or the neck gets damaged over time.
@maximu8899: I've alsways strung my P-bass and any other Fender bass clockwise. The difference that may occur at times is that the older tuning pegs turn clockwise to tighten the string as opposed to counter-clockwise as you'll see on most guitars and basses today.
Tarnation...! in Australia you have to wind it your way... because you're down under and all... just like your sinks draining clockwise... it's all part of the world balance system... when we exhale up here, you have to exhale down there... everyone knows that...LOL!
if it was a Factory refin and you can prove it, YOU GOT A GOLD MINE IN YOUR LAP THERE HOME BOY.
if your were the poor nut who got it refinished you might as well cut the value in half.
Sounds good, it's amazing if you've ever played an old one you understand the craftsmanship that most of those old ones had. You'll cross a lemon here and there but old Leo knew how to make a bass.
It is not a Fender paint job - it is not the typical flaky cellulose paint of the era, it's polyester paint. It was refinished in England, probably in the Vox factory for sale new. And no it wan't me who had it refinished!! Yes indeed Leo was a genius.
I remember when Fender started using those colors, gossip tells it was due to lack ok wood quality, others say it was due to a "garage sell" of inks from a car brand in the nearbys of Leo Fender workshop. Anyway, my Fender is a 64 Jazz Bass, and no one in the world woiuld touch it. See my images of it in "behjoh" Fender Jazz Bass in you tube. Big hug. Good luck
Beautiful '64 Jazz. Classic 3 tone sunburst with tortoiseshell pickguard. Guard it with your life! You have some nice clips. Stanley Clarke is my no.2 favourite bass player. Top man is Jaco. I am also a sax player. Coltrane - genius!
Thanks for your kind comments. The collectors' demand is still huge, even for refinished vintage Fenders, which fetch big prices, but not as much as original finish pieces of course, especially the custom colours which fetch astronomic prices. Anyway I kind of prefer this one 2 tone sunburst than Lake Placid blue.
Nice bass. I have a 65. Try some Thomastic Flats on it...JF344. It will come ALIVE w/ 50's/60's tones and they last forever and wont chew your frets up.
Thank you for showing your lovely P-Bass ! If you want to keep the frets in close to pristine condition, you might like to consider putting a set off round-wound strings on the instrument. This Bass would have had them originally anyway.Best regards from Germany and The Motown Lovers.
The thumb rest is actually a finger rest because in the 50s and early 60s most bass players played with only their thumbs would you believe? I am not sure of the exact date, maybe 1968 ish but Fender realised that thumb style playing (very different from modern style slapping of course) was a thing of the past and so they switch the position of the rest to on top.
@Atheisttasylum thanks :P

the bass IS strung CORRECTLY. I have a 62 RI and mine is strung in the exact same way - because there is only 1 way you can string the bass!

The bass is strung correctly. There is only one way that u can string it.. they are vintage tuners. you turn the key clockwise to higher the pitch.

He's right, the guitar is strung wrong. The strings should wrap the tuning post so that you turn the key away from you to raise the pitch.

That black "box" under the strings is a finger rest; on later Fenders, it is over the strings and you rest your thumb on it to play fingerstyle.
