  • It is an amazing song, amazing in the pain of a breakup.

  • i love -- Cinderella checked her watch!! HA HA!!

  • Man, he really botched the lyrics to this.

  • one of the best break-up songs ever written or performed.....if you're unclear on the concept, the event took place on Haloween evening.....a word to the wise....if you're going to leave someone, don't forget to take your camera with you....

  • anyone know what tuning he's in?

  • @AxePostal Standard tuning capo 5th fret.

    It's mint to play.

  • priceless, indeed

  • Monsieur Grimley does this song very well, as he plays it to his students.

  • @sickel101 I listen to it every year because of him! I miss it so much

  • One other priceless thing about this video is that he got caught forgetting the 4th line, but he covered it well by repeating the second line instead. I guess it worked since nobody seemed to notice (or at least to comment) besides me. I love watching this video anyway. Great song! The words are supposed to be:

You took the toaster when you went; you never paid your half the rent; you took the spices from the rack, "but you don't have to put them back".

  • Love this song. Just prompted to check it out on You Tube as it's Halloween. Richard sang it for me as a request a couple of years ago. I was thrilled. Chatted with him afterwards - lovely guy.

  • my english teacher played this song today on his guitar...his cover was better xD

  • our teacher did the same today...

  • ok^^

    yeah (ja stimmt) xD

  • i first heard this song on a sampler cd from oasis - not a dj or booker, but they sent it to me since one of my songs was on it- I loved it the first time i heard it, still have it in rotation on my cd jukebox.

as a fellow songwriter and out of the closet banjo player - (come on out brother !) - just cuz it didn't happen doesn't mean it isn't true.

  • Love him, he's the Kevin Spacey of music :)

  • Cinderella checked her watch :-)

  • this guy has a nice voice menn

  • hahaaa brnc15 what a sweetheart

he's got a nice coice indeed

i saw that you put this song by your favz

so i thougt aaah check it ouuttt

    whahaa kuzzzjess schad

  • whaha :$

  • I love this song. Richard sang it for me when I called it out at a house concert. Dave Nachmanoff had sung it for me earlier that year. Twice in a year - how amazing. I sing the chorus when drivers tail gate me and then overtake. It is my way of keeping calm.

  • Great song!!

  • Thanks for sharing this! It has been years since I heard of this song.

  • If you like Richard, check out John Gorka. They were in a band together in college.

  • is he playing this in drop D?

  • My guess is that it's D-A-D-G-A-D tuning.

  • "What comes out grey is really red." Priceless.

  • Great song, always yields a smile. Interesting to read also that Mr.Shindell has worked with Antje Duvekot, another very talented songwriter and performer.

  • Really? That /is/ very interesting. I'm not surprised at all, I guess. Their styles have some nice similarities.

  • i'm going to a concert in about 2 weeks! yeah!

  • the delay just before ''i dedicate this one to you'...is pricless

  • I hope he comes to the Detroit area soon. I want to take my mom to see him.

  • Great song - very moving

  • update... I got to go to the show and he was better than I imagined live. Truley art. Ive seen probably 100 concerts but this is right up there with my favorites.

  • ya, the tampa concert was amazing. and this song, with his artful aside, is something I have never heard the likes of on radio.

  • I am soo bummed out. Hes coming to tampa in 2 days and he sold out. I've been pleading with the radio people to find me some tickets but its not looking good. lol you took the toaster when you went, you never paid your half the rent, you took the spices from the rack. you never paid your half the rent. lmao its ok i forgive him

  • If it is any consolation, he was amazing last night. Great interaction with the audience and he is a funny guy in addition to being a wonderful guitarist, writer, and performer. 3eb4me, hopefully it won't be another 5 or 6 years before he returns but when he does, do not delay in getting your tickets. They sold out very quickly for a 425 seat auditorium.

  • I love this guy... I saw him last night in charlottesville and he played this one it was great :)

  • I love this.

  • Ha! Always thought this was a true story. Great to see Richard here...

  • Great job posting these! Last time I saw him in concert (I think that same tour) in Seattle, he had a full beard.

  • Richard is GREAT! Love the song! THANKS!

  • great to hear the whole story, love that song!

  • Hah, he NEVER remembers the words to this song when he plays it live. But, we still love it anyway :-)

  • I LOVE that this happened this way because I just screwed the words up to one of my songs on a tv thing and I felt like absolute crap...I LOVE that someone that I just ADORE screws his words up live...it's heartening...he's human...we're all human

    :D :D :D
