This man captured the passion, the emotion of the time periods of which he sings. We forget so quickly and are consumed with things like...why isn't the latest app working on my i-phone, or why is there another infomercial channel on cable. He is singing of our history, it happened to past relatives. It could have easily been us. These are things we should not let be swept under the rug. There are lessons to be learned from the past, if only we would learn them. Just a humble opinion of mine.
Holy crap! My parents, my aunts and uncles gave themsleves to WWII to keep the dogs of war at bay. Have we failed to teach our children of what has happened?! Or does this conflict never end?!
Glenn Beck's been talking about The Night of Long Knives several times lately...guess I need to bone up on history (I'd never heard of it before.) (GBTV.com) Freaky that I'd come across this song today...I'd never heard it before, either.
This is a great song that is so unknown. I've been listening to it since 1976. Great lyrics that probably bore the hell out of the narcissitic 20 somethings.
I had been listening to this song for about ten years, thinking it was pretty good, before I looked up the lyric at the end of the second verse-- turns out it's the best in the song, and one of the best ever written IMO.
And a lost wind of summer blows into the streets
Past the tramps in the alleyways, the rich in silk sheets
Europe lies sleeping, you feel her heartbeats
Through the floor
On the last day of June 19---
and then you're away into the massacre. Gorgeous and tragic.
Today is the anniversary of Hitler's Night of the Long Knives--a purge of his own political party...oddly, it seems that many political parties could use some cleaning up even today.
Soooo stoked that this song's been posted on You Tube...just decided to look it up out of the blue and there it was -- you did it yesterday?!! I love Al Stewart and listened to this album over and over and over...such beautiful poetic imagery interwoven with history lessons; there's only one person who could do this. I closed my eyes and listened...again.

@L188188
Indeed.
Otoh (tho' it's probably little consolation to Mr Stewart) isn't it a small, guilty pleasure to know that you're among the elect?
And there's almost a cult-like following for "Roads to Moscow"

This song was cut too early. Those chords at the end were not included. Ouch.

Only Al Stewart would write a song about Ernst Rohm....

One of my most favorite Al Stewart songs. In my house, PPF is nicknamed the "Prime Rib" album, because we always play it when we have prime rib!

@048LIB I saw that no one has put this song and decided to be the one. It's good song and he is great.
