  • I own a macbook pro, an iphone, and a kindle. I would never buy the ipad because it doesn't make any since to own for anyone that has a laptop and a smart phone. The ipad is a blown up iphone that doesn't have the portability of my phone or the capabilities of my laptop. It just does not make since to own it. I own the kindle because you can read it without eye strain and don't need to waste paper on books that you only use once.

  • awesome skit

  • that loner pissed me off

  • Kindle wonned

  • i got the kindle 3 todayyyyy ^_^ id never buy the ipad for reading.

  • I feel like the only thing Ipad has going for it as far as a reader goes is the color, but the color is lit by LCD which I HATE to read on. But I am an avid reader. As far as all the other things that the Ipad does, well I am reading , so why would I want a reader that does all that. Dont need it. I would much rather have a lap top for computer stuff and if I am going to feel the need to get online while out, I will use my phone. The Ipad would be embarrassing out the check out counter! LOL

  • ipad = eyerape

  • I'd love a colored kindle so I could read comics as well.... makes no sense reading comics in black and white.... the ipad has that option, but it produces light, which I like for games, but not to read

  • hello kindel 3 has web bower i have emailed on it ,, but you can not compare the ipad to any ereader loved the video

  • They have really nailed it with the Kindle - at last the ipod for books. This is going to be huge. When I opened the box to my Kindle 3 I nearly damages it trying to peel the "paper cover": it was the screen saver!

  • How about somebody give me one of each so I can decide? My eyes are strained, maybe the real thing"s" would do the job.

  • iPad = eyestrain for ebooks.

  • The iPad is a giant itouch that is over-priced...

  • Leave it to Pogue to use other products as a means to support his personal product choices. He embarrasses his company.

  • The iPad is not for reading.

The only people who would buy the iPod for "reading" are idiots who don't actually read.

  • Heehehe. This made me smile.

  • Meh, if all you want to do is read, get the Kindle, mostly because of the book selection and features, but the iPad really serves a different purpose. No one knows what, just yet, but we'll figure it out. ;P

  • I need one of those for the shitter.

  • Hysterical.

  • That iPad looked really bright like my eyes wuold hurt.

  • If you're someone who reads a lot and simply wants to be able to easily read anywhere you go, then the Kindle wins hands down. It's simply better as an all around e-reader. However, if you're a more casual reader who likes light reading such as magazines and don't care about having an e-reader you can carry with you at all times and you don't mind spending a lot more money, then the iPad is better. Then again, if you're rich enough, you'll simply by both since they serve different purposes.

  • @MarmaladeINFP THANK YOU, it annoys me to no end, that people keep putting kindle vs iPad. they are different things for different uses. ipad obviously does alot more but it isn't a better ebook reader, and is alot more expensive.

  • @meachy13 You're welcome. As a non-rich person who is a heavy reader, I bought a Kindle shortly after writing the above analysis. I know of people who have bought the iPad and they seem very happy with their purchase. My decision-making process involved many factors, but the basic practicality of the Kindle fit what I was looking for. Besides, I've always had very good customer service from Amazon and they've earned my customer loyalty. It just comes down to knowing what you're looking for.

  • @meachy13 I should point out that the type of reading one plans to do makes a big difference. I tend to read books that are mostly text. The Kindle is very easy to read and allows for good quality presentation of black/white pictures. However, it's lack of color would be a major drawback for some people. The person I know who bought an iPad wanted it to read comic books which of course look better with color. Many magazines and art books would also look way better when viewed on an iPad.

  • @MarmaladeINFP Yeah I mean it would make absolutely no sense to get a kindle to look at fashion magazines.... If you read novels it just seems like the best choice out there, I don't have one (yet) but I plan to get one in the next few days, well order it anyways. I'm just sad ppl keep comparing it against the iPad... i mean its not an iPad type device, the iPad is used for different things as you said basically "light" readers, I couldn't imagine reading on an iPad all day, it would kill.

  • @meachy13 I just had another thought. Have you bought a Kindle yet? I have the newest model. I like it and I'm satisfied. But I might eventually by a DX. The smaller Kindle serves basic purposes for which I bought it. I just think that having a larger screen might be nice when I'm doing more extensive reading. My original purpose was to use my Kindle as a replacement for my electronic dictionary. I just wanted to put reference works on my Kindle, but it turns out I like reading on it.

  • @MarmaladeINFP I don't have one quite yet, I'm ordering it, as soon as a check thats supposed to be here.. gets here lol. but, I was thinking getting the cheapest model of kindle, see how I like it, and if i like it, later give that to my grandma, and get a DX myself lol.

  • Very funny!

But I tend to agree with David Pogue. They really are two separate categories. Yes, they both are great eReaders with pros and cons of each.

I still prefer the iPad, mainly because of the multipurpose features. The Kindle is an exciting device that has tremendously helped the eBook market, but it wasn’t until iPad came along that the eBook market seems to be soaring all of the sudden.

There is no winner and no looser here, just a personal preference.

    Great video, thanks!

  • Which is best: a magazine or a shock absorber?

Depends on the magazine but I'd prefer a shock absorber for it's higher retail value thus it's better than a magazine.

  • unlike Sony readers or the Nook, neither of them can download eBooks you can borrow from libraries

  • @mxwp just torrent the pdf version... you can get almost any book free in pdf form from many websites.. and just drag them on to the kindle... problem solved.

  • @meachy13

I'd only do that for shitty books. For good books I'd actually, you know, reward the authors for their hard work.

  • Is this the kind of content I can look forward to from NYT? Cause....wow.

  • You guys are funny. :) And I'm glad to see you realize the iPad and Kindle are utterly different items. There's no comparison. "Which is better, a magazine, or a shock absorber?" Exactly.

  • I own an iPad and can tell you for damn sure if you're into reading books the Kindle 3 is the better buy. In fact, if you can buy both. While ibooks UI is amazing, you can't read a full book on an LCD display if you care about your eyesight.
