I love Moonspell's early stuff and the new stuff. This mid era where they experimented I didn't care for. Moonspell actually started out as somewhat a folk metal band. Their "Under The Moonspell" EP is black/folk metal and incorporated arabian/egyptian/middle eastern elements into quite raw black metal well before even bands like Melechesh started doing that.

There seems to be an argument as to whether or not this is metal. In my opinion, metal has little to do with the way it sounds. What makes a song metal is the integrity behind it. I think that moonspell is very metal. Take a band like Slipknot for instance. They may have qualities that make them SOUND like metal, but there is no soul or integrity. It's just empty music used to make money. Moonspell are passionate artists, and that's what keeps them metal. Just my opinion.

Ok everyone here is right! Moonspell contains, doom, goth, black, and death. Black and death being the least of their sound because Moonspell never used blast beats until night eternal, and blasts are needed to be black or death, but I agree they have elements of both. They are not slow enough to be doom, and goth is a pretty close. The prob is they transcend genre, as all good bands do, they cannot be pegged as anyone thing, and this is the mark of the greatest bands they cant be labeled.

Also, their old stuff reflects Black Metal more than Doom Metal, even though it has influences of all THREE genres. Especially things like Alma Mater and Serpent Angel.

As for Goth Metal... Scorpion Flower, Opium, and Noctourna. Just songs off the top of my head.

And i have seen Moonspell since their beggining. I asked the drumer what type of metal were theirs, he told me that it wasnt a gender, it was a mix of power metal, trash and and mainly doom. At the time there wanst any shit such as goth metal.

Their music as no specific gender, their music its "Moonspell"! I call it Moon Metal!
