I visited Detroit years ago and to be honest I was really looking forward to it, home of Motown, home of the Motor car, what I seen was neglect, decay, potholed roads, and to say I was disappointed would be a huge understatement.

Growing up in Idaho, I saw a lot of ghost towns, and a lot more towns where half the buildings were abandoned. That's exactly what Detroit is now, and for exactly the same reason: The local industry shut down, and it's never coming back. Nothing's going to change that
I'm surprised that he said Detroit's decline started in the late 40's. I thought the post-war boom, more cars etc., would have been really a booster, so I just checked and read the population peaked in 1950 at 1.8+ m and fell to 1.6+m in 1960, so he's right.

I worked for 8 bucks an hour for YEARS. I was GLAD to have a job and not be some lazy bum who wouldn't take a job because it didn't pay enough. Walmart makes billions of dollars. The Waltons are billionares. I know a manager at a Walmart who couldn't afford to hear her house in the winter. That is unacceptable.
My home town was very industrial back in the day, and has also suffered a long, lingering destruction. Watching this video is so familier to me. Hell, just look at Toyota, their workers make a comparable wage to Union workers exactly because of the union. The company does this to keep its employees from seeking unionization. After seeing what happened to detroit today after enduring 50 years of left wing democrat policies and unions, I'm in complete shock and awe that anyone would still support them.
What a tragedy.
Why does no one try to stop democrats, liberals and unions before it's too late?? Are you really so brainwashed by them into thinking that their policies actually work after seeing this?

@MinmatarThrasher Yes unions can be corrupt but remember before unions we were working 18 hours a day for pennies because the employers were corrupt. But even though they were both corrupt unions still fought for improved work conditions and higher wages. It's the poliicians, on the left and, yes, on the RIGHT too, who signed all these free trade agreements that opened up foreign competition and sent all of our jobs to China so blame them for the decline of manufacturing jobs.

@Jshect I live in a union-less state and I don't make pennies. In fact, the standards of living here are much better than any north eastern states of whom are all pro union.

@MinmatarThrasher Well I will admit the unions are corrupt but that just means we need to try to reform them not get rid of them. And besides you probably don't work in a manufacturing job. It is my opinion , but it seems the more people you have fighting for workers' rights the better. Corporations are only concerned with the bottom line: money. They lobby congress everytime the minimum wage is about to be raised. You can not trust them alone to look out for the average worker.

@MinmatarThrasher During the early part of the 20th century it was the unions who fought for the 40 hour work day and increased wages. We need that kind of spirit again. The unions aren't as effective today. Walmart makes billions of dollars. The Waltons are billionares. I know a manager at a Walmart who couldn't afford to hear her house in the winter. That is unacceptable.

wow, jane cooper ele, was my old elementary. i almost cried watching it in this video. i remember when it closed down in 2005. i was in mid. school i cudn't believe it. anyway, i just remember cooper was the best elementary school ever. they had REAL teachers that cared about the students. they taught and made sure ever kid knew what they should have. best school ever.
