People always talk about poisonous mercury vapors. If you're playing with it a short time you might as well not worry. Mercury at room temperature is closer to freezing point than boiling point, and it evaporates slower than ice. If you stick a piece of ice in the freezer, you know that it evaporates, but it takes weeks and weeks.

The nature of mercury is to be by itself, it has strong surface tension, which makes it hard for cells to absorb. People used to drink CUPS of the stuff as a cure for digestive problems. They didn't die in hours, they lived until something else killed them. They would have tumors form though.
