Really enjoyed this vid. Do you have some form of official rules for this type of competition? Saw the notes below the vid (which are helpful) but looking for something a little bit more detailed. If so, would you be willing to share that info? Thanks in advance!
Iaido is a good form to use and understand the samurai sword proper cuts and all that jazz and don't get me wrong is cool but like ASIRA89 said is only form no fighting or sparring i took Iaido for 2 years and then move on when i saw all i was learning was what i already knew then move on to bigger things and more fun ones as well :) Kendo is really good but again is sport like but you will learned alot there when it comes to combat
do you do sparring in iaido? i mean like fighting? every video i find about iaido is just katas and presentation. i guess if i want to have real fights i have to do kendo am i right?
@ASIRA89 There is no sparring in Iaido - modern or classical schools.........and I've never ever seen any senior Iai Sensei do anything like this. With correct form comes speed - sorry but I can't see either with in this?
i wish i could learn laido... much less any sword art....... lol i have a katana but i cant sheath it quickly, and i have no idea how to train so i end up more or less roleplaying o.O' (there is no martial arts offered where i live, and i want to learn laido along with kendo and ninjitsu o.O but alas i gotta live somwhere where it is offered i suppose... too bad i cant live in japan or asia in general O.O
@reapordeath why coz there so good? well if thats the case then you've got the video here... just copy what they/re doing in the video and watch more videos like this and you'll learn. or better yet use your understanding of balance, weight, human body, cutting and you'll figure out a way to use a sword.
@maxgunn555 i know how not to cut myself. ive been playing with them sense i was a kid. have the scars to prove it. but problem is, in a real fight i cant move this fast, and my fighting style with a bladed weapon revolves around speed, and general accuracy. i have accuracy, but no speed. but now say i had a way to make up for lack of speed with say... shuriken? or something i can distract my opponent with i could do some damage.
@reapordeath don't know what you mean in a real fight. i'd practice regular hold of sword and all angles of swings and thrusts and then i'd practice reverse holding the sword sort of like a ddagger and then i'd practice cutting strikes from the sheath and then returning it to the sheath really quickly.
@maxgunn555 i can use all of those, but i mean in a life or death situation.
the human body uses adrenline in that situation, if we were to fight, his skill overpowers mine in a duel like this. but in a combat situation where i could lose my life, i would move twice as fast, but i would probably kill myself first. because i would move too fast and lose my balance trip, fall and land on my own sword. so i move slow naturally so i dont make tht mistake
@maxgunn555 lol well its only an example, if it was a short sword its possible >.> theres a sword i want more than a katana. its called the nodachi, looks similar to a katana, exept a nodachi is much bigger and cant be worn at the hip like a regular katana. theyre usually worn at the back sideways :p
Isnt this more like iaijutsu since its about actual combat? Iaido is mainly highly structured for personal development and while it can be used for combat, thats not its focus.
interesting tournament, I have never seen such a form of tournament of Iaido, usually just compete in terms of fixed sequence of katas. Two thumbs up.
i don't like flashy things, but, in this case i really like how this competition is set, and how the rules, of course, ask for a good technique to validate the points :)... ah and some one have an OES xxxD in the background, i would say a 350D :o
it would be great, if some day motion capture technology allowed to put movement of competitors on virtual reality avatars of them - avatars would be standing in real fight range, and proper software would transfer inflicted damage into points (or KO)
They don´t have a designed kata. They can choose from the whole technical repertoire, but as usual in competition people develop their favorite combinations. The quality of the technique is checked by 4 judges. Both techniques must be correctly executed and stopped at the right moment. (no swinging through from 1st to 2nd waza). Even the correct voice and body movement is checked. Sorry, but I don´t have enough letters to explain the criteria in detail! Thanks for the interest!
The different rounds are described in the text. There are 3 different types of round:
noto kata: means you have to make noto first (blade at least half inside the saya)
senko kata: sente attacker and kote defender are announced, sente starts within 2 seconds of the command, defender must do a block or a batto with an taisabaki in reaction to the attack.
...and of course: if one of the both the techniques is not correct there is no point given. If both make mistakes no point will be given in this round.
Looks challenging! Thanks for sharing

@ASIRA89 What you see on this video is a competition example of Takedaryu Iaido, called Batto shiai!
It is performed on large distance and 3 judges look if the techniques were correct, who was the faster one and who had a strategic advantage.

Great! One question - are you using shinken or iaito?
djejjar 2 years ago
For this exercise we use Iaito! This would be a little bit to dangerous with shinken in competition speed. :-)

Thank you for posting this. Amazing speed!
