Prophetic and just as relevant today, sadly, as when it was written..
Amazing song! Loved it ever since it came out. Cracked me up back when it first came out how a lot of people, without listening to the lyrics, thought it was this happy go lucky song about radio hits...
Great energetic track. TERRIBLE video! Rumour is that the guys were pretty unhappy with the plans for the video but knew they had to play along - look at the fun Chris and Jools are having in the background! (The part we're they're swinging the guitars and bowing to eachother).... they are taking the mickey by the way! Brilliant act of rebellion towards a director who tried to take a great British band with substance and turn them into watered down Bon Jovi look-alikes!
Thanx for posting this early video of mine. I am the co-director/editor and producer of the clip. If you add my name to your more info section, it will get more plays as I have tons of fans of my over 90 MTV and VH-1 music videos. Best, Chip Miller (filmmaker & music video director) Hollywood, CA
Awful video. Had I seen this back in 1985, I would have bought "Slippery when wet" instead of this! My life may have turned out completely different. I may have turned out to be a real douche bag but hey, I would have gotten laid more. I guess that's what the "butterfly effect" is all about.
i enjoy their Dancing, however i find that it shows no reason how they can do that without actually playing their guitars. If i could do that in real life, i would be glad.
Glenn looks like he's about to have an anxiety attack when he wipes his brow. They are clearly jet-lagged and not enjoying themselves. I recommend anyone to watch this on DVD to see the full horror in better detail, like Jools' facial expression at 0:45...
from my favorite squeeze record,"cosi fan tutti frutti". goes beyond their "pub-rock" sound, which pissed off some people. still inspires me to this day...
Saw Squeeze last night in Bsotn. Great show.. This song was nowhere to be found though. Really enjoyed Messed Around and Slightly drunk. East Side Story was awsome
I agree the video is kinda lame, but the song left me hanging, too. Here's this song that builds up to becoming hostages in a hijacking and concludes with no literal ending or even a more elaborate instrumental close. I still like it, but wish they put another 30 - 45 seconds into the music.
I couldn't stop laughing while watching this! God, what a horribly cheesy TOTALLY '80s video. Still, Glenn Tilbrook is a beautiful man with a beautiful voice. He could sing the alphabet song and I'd be in heaven.
Yes, but it was hardly something that was visible in everyday life or pop culture in the '80s the way it is since 9/11. It was considered a remote possibilty and security then was less than tight, in fact, some airlines (including the major one in Squeeze's home country) left the cockpit door open and allowed passengers to visit the cockpit in flight pretty much right up until 9/11.
I cringe when Glenn wipes his brow at the 2:00 minute mark. What a fey performance. Nice costume change during the guitar solo too, lol. I enjoy Chris & Jools performances though. All in all, not a horrible video, but the song deserved better.
i really love this song although i agree the video is weak but i am still very happy to finally find it as i haven't seen it in years. thanks very much!
Chris Difford: "We had to make a video for this and we were talked into doing it with a film director in LA. We flew in, feeling rather the worse for wear when we arrived, recorded the video, and then came straight back. After all that, it's the worst video you can imagine, recorded in front of a blue screen. When we left, the director put all these goings on behind. It was meant to be MTV-like, so we had to conform to what they wanted, but it cost about $100,000. A total waste of money."
i love this video for all its 80s 'qualities'...but have you seen the video for 853-5937? it's even worse :)

Squeeze at their most hilariously dated. Never really could have been a big hit, for which I imagine they are now grateful. Love that dancing though.

What's funny is that youtube is the only place where you can find this song..Squeeze is almost ashamed to put this song on Itunes..

I wonder is that a midi controlled Akai wind air instrument or is it just a synthesizer keyboard and he is fake playing that in the video?

Why does this version seem so much faster than on the album?
becky219 4 years ago
It seems faster because the producers sped up the video to fit more in videos in their timeframe. It's an old trick.

Has anyone ever thought of the fact that this song is about an airliner hijacking, a good 15 years before 9/11 and such?

You know they were hijacking planes long before '85. Geez.
