Eamonn Andrews was Dublin born and Irish, not British. But his career was based in the UK. I think he was credited with bringing over 'This is Your Life' to the UK - or was it taking it to the US? The first I think.
I've never heard that but it's certainly possible. Some of their egos were big enough that they might be willing to cheat. But the studio audience was watching so it couldn't be too obvious.
Oh lard, Red Buttons was shorter than Martin Gabel. What did that make him? About 4'11"?
Buttons might be the flukiest Oscar winner of all time. For years after that fluke, it seemed every time he made a movie, and go on some talk show, he'd have the host say something about how they're talking "another Oscar nomination for you," and he'd bow his head down modestly and say, "Well, yes ..."
this might be the worst WML. the screeching became very annoying, it obviously annoyed the panel too. was it necessary to be that extreme? it's just a game show.
June 1959 -- the only time British WML host Eammon Andrews guest hosts the American WML as Daly is reporting a news event in Tokyo. Daly missed only 4 broadcasts from 1950 to 1960, which must be some sort of attendance record.
Irwin Allen, producer of The Big Circus, must have liked Red Buttons, for Buttons appeared in a few other Allen productions, notably the First (and Best) Poseidon Adventure (1972)
I have to agree with your comment about Daly's attendance record on "WML?" Compared with Garry Moore or Bud Collyer especially, Daly was indeed something of an "iron man." (It also didn't hurt that, starting a few months after this episode, "WML?" began taping some episodes in advance, for reasons ranging from Daly's ABC duties as would be the case to 1960, to stocking up for "summer break" episode.)
Sayonara was a beautiful movie he starred on.

Although the people are all charming in these old clips these old clips they tend to crouch a lot.
TV was in its infancy then and maybe presentation wasn't as considered as much as it is now.

There are so many times that the panel seems to guess the mystery guest out of nowhere that you wonder if they were tipped off.

He looks like the great uncle of the actor Kevin Connolly who was in Entourage and "He's Not That Into You".
