  • I've played a turbo express, they are hugeeee, the sega nomad is even bigger

  • Shit, wait until this guy sees the Vita's screen. I think he'll have a heart attack.

  • This video is annoying to watch, he keeps repeating the same things.

Could of had the video half the size or even less if he didn't repeat stuff so many times.

  • You should see if Ben Heck will mod that for you. He could probably replace the bad capacitors, change the power source to a small lithium ion, and connect it to a new screen. He could also remove any components that might be unnecessary. Maybe he could attempt to fit the remaining components into a Gameboy Pocket-style case. Or even a GBA SP case.

  • @sefaen LOL Ben Heck is crazy. Awesome I mean! But yeah my friend is a electronics tech who can change the bad caps.

  • just bought one for £100 and it came with 6 great games and wondered if using headphones would sort out the sound like with the gameboy colour.

  • @emojo1990 Yeah I think sometimes if the speaker doesn't work the headphones still might work.

  • enemy of the state

  • @DarkAndMartyr LOL yeah I remember that. I saw the movie in the theaters with my friends from HS and I was the only one who noticed that and knew what it was.

  • Being able to play Street fighter 2 on a portable system in 1993 was amazing.

  • im pretty sure u can get a cart that fixes the dead pixels. i think its quite rare tho.

  • @emojo1990 Oh yeah? That's kinda funny. there's videos that flash the red, green and blue screens really quickly that it can do that too I guess you could try playing that into the TV Tuner if you had it and leave it on to see if that does it.

  • I suppose NEC's status as an electronics manufacturer might have helped them to go with a high end screen. Since they probably made the screens themselves, their cost wasn't as high as it would have been for their competitors who have to outsource that type of thing.

They had the same advantage with IC manufacturing, which made them pretty threatening in the console market.

  • "Legendary Axe", eh? Looks more like Legendary Slaxe to me, the axe on the title screen looks like a combination of a sword, an axe, and a lance, dubbed a "slaxe" by Uncyclopedia.

  • When SEGA built the Nomad, I guess they still went with the Passive LCD screen because I hear how the LCD on those are no better than Game Gear. Right

  • Nice video. I currently have a Sega Nomad and have been thinking of getting a TG-16 but I really do not have the room for it, Would you recommend getting the TurboExpress. Thank you for your time.

  • I always found it funny that this console featured prominently in the movie "Enemy of the state" long after it was discontinued.

  • Does the Turbo Express have region lockout? Cause i wanna get some Jap games for it.

  • @abcpat100 Unfortunately just like the TG16 you can't play PCE games on them without modding the system or using the adapters for the hucards and they are quite expensive now.

  • @MN12BIRD boooo region lockout booooooooo!!!!!

  • @abcpat100

if you go to telegames UK game site look up the product id 7922. They have the HuCard converter for $50

  • There is a Sound Fix throught modding, but the guide i know is written in german!

  • That is so awesome, I too own the older psp and it just got a dead pixel on its screen. I was finally able to remove a stripped screw to remove the faceplate for screan cleaning. Its funny how the start button on the pc engine is run.

  • I found $400 on the road back in '91 in Australia when I was 17 and a chinese friend of mine had a friend who had one of these. I bought it off him for $180 after a lot of effort convincing, mustve been one of the very few in Aus. Bloody awesome and that same friend got me SFII championship edition when it came out in '93 by going to Taiwan. It was still in the arcades then but I had it handheld, awesome memories.

  • Well that handheld should have longer battery life now just because they make Lithium Double AA's now which last much longer than the Double AAs they had back then.

  • LOL you have dead pixels on your GT.........

  • @ENGLANDTHEGREATEST LOL most of them do...

  • this would have been like the 3DO of handhelds at the time, expensive, and mostly a luxury most people couldnt afford , but you got what you paid for, this screen looks better then the screen on the GBA, which is a decade newer, and obviously the graphics were much better then the GB/Game Gear.

  • My Game Gear has that sound problem.

  • My first DS got a dead spot.I have another one now(the other one's screen broke due to a short in the ribbon cable),and so far it hasn't gotten a dead spot yet.

  • By the way,Nintendo wants to make another DS.I mean it's like "don't do it NIntendo".Besides they already have the DSi and again the DSi XL.If they release another one, they'll probably go bankrupt.

  • I'm guessing the screen is supposed as clear as the PSP 3000 or the DSi XL.

  • I really got entertained by this one.

  • Awesome review Jake, I own the US Turbo Express and I definitely understand ya on the sound issue, I got 1 that has that issue, if you ever find a way to fix your GT would you consider fixing mine and pay you for it. I do have it for sale as well, but I will only sell it to certain people, if you are interested let me know :).

  • I'm not that good with electronics I can only do really basic soldering. I don't know enough about what caps would work and I couldn't solder surface mount I doubt. I'm going to eventually get my friend to fix it for me he has those kinda skills!

  • You've been making videos for almost 3 years, you have over 5000 subscribers and yet you still haven't bothered to buy a decent camera that doesn't make an annoying ringing sound in the background. You're always saying how "mint" everything is you buy, why not get an HD camera so we can see....

  • Hey, great review. I also recently picked up one of these (Turbo Express version) with 1 dead pixel and no sound through the speaker. Stick in some earphones or a portable speaker and it sounds great. An amazing console for the time! Get one if you can.

  • This is probably one of my favorite handhelds, and you're right this system was way ahead of its time when it came out. Great pickup Jake!

  • dude that is sweet, nice pick up jake

  • very impressive screen!

  • Well I knew someone who had a Game Gear as well.

Still wish I had one back in the day.

  • I wanted one of these so bad back in 1990. I was jealous that a rich kid I went to school with had one and all I had was a gameboy.

    Oh well.

  • LOL yeah I didn't know anyone who had one. Heck I'd never seen one in person until I picked this one up. Even only a few kids had Game Gear I remember almost everyone had Game Boy inc me!

  • Cool system but those dead pixels would piss me off to no end. Also 6 AA batteries every 3 hours???!!! Quite an operating cost that thing has.

  • Great review!

  • You can forgive it for being bigger than a Gameboy since it's basically a home console in your hands.

Wow I am impressed by that screen. Would love to have one of those bad boys.

  • is it progressive?

  • I need to get me one of these, asap.

  • JESUS! that blows away my MKII on the Game Boy that I got in 1994.....that picture looks like it was played on your tv back in the day, cool stuff man.

  • Nice review jake!, I remember seeing a couple of adds for these badboys back in the day but never really got into them since i was into my gameboy or game gear at the time and those handhelds seemed more efficient at the time; But man! your not joking when the screen on the Portable P.C engine is just leaps and bounds better than the game gear and probably the sega nomad which is basically the same thing as that except it plays Genesis games, it takes six batteries too i think.

  • Great review man! Very thorough.

  • Holy crap, you must have paid a fortune for that!

  • i'm more impressed that they made a portable 16 bit system than a good lcd screen. if portable is even the word for it.

  • luke morse likes this guy, they constantly give each other games :/

  • which proberbly means luke morse likes jake more than he likes you

  • awesome man i never got to see the turbo express on in action and is great an old friend of mine had the tg 16 but i never got to play it i hope some day i can have one

  • well there u go,, i just learnt something new today about the diff between passive and active lcd.. i paused ur vid when u mentioned it and started reading up on it,, i mean when the GG was new i remember i was just blown away about the fact that it was colour..

  • *drools*

  • How much did you pay for this thing? Looks pretty sweet.

  • Cool that on the go they decided to make a no compromise portable gaming system. I wonder how popular it was over in Japan as the PCE was quite popular there?

  • Hell yes! I need to find one of these that needs some caps and a bit of lovin'. One of these days.

  • Congratulations for the new system!!! I follow all your videos!

  • another great vid!!! are you gonna make a video showing how to fix the sound problem? mine does the same thing. you can just barely hear it.

  • WTH! i want this so badly!

  • I had a turbo express when I was a kid. I wish I still had it......sigh...

  • i can hear the sound

  • Very informative review.I've always wanted to pick up a GT to compliment my TurboExpress

  • "on the right side we have the jacks." That's the left side! Is your camera flipped?

  • Great review! What a cool handheld an so ahead of its time. Have you looked into possible fixes for the dead pixels? You could use the RCA audio/video input on the Tv tuner to play a dead pixel flash video which could fix the problem. As for the bad capacitors I'm sure you're aware that Luke Morse could advise you. Hope that helps and let me know if you want any help at all.

  • That screen looks better than a lot of today's portable screens! Looked like it was running at a true 60hz too. I think most of today's portable LCDs still only run at 30hz with interlace blending. Amazing to find out about this! Thanks for sharing! I'm going to find out some more on that screen!

  • Great vid. (I just jizzed my pants) just letting you know. =D

  • ahh, you're saying alot of nines xD

    299,99...249,99...199,99 xD

Awesome mashine afterall :P ... if it were cheaper it would prob beat the Game Boy.. I'm glad they didn't :p

  • That is simply amazing, I've never seen these before, great video as usual MN12BIRD :)

  • SUBED

  • Agree the screen is superb...

  • I've always thought these were very cool, a lot of the used ones I've seen always seem to have the sound issues. Must be hard to get one in really good nick.

  • If you saw your friends in the 90's playing gameboy and you showed them this, you would totally blow them away. And omg! The screen is almost better than the screen on my videocamera!

  • Sweet! And you can use it for self defence if needed, bet it would hurt like ASS to get that brick in the head.

  • now thats HD!!

you would be one cool kid

coolest on the block if you had that in the mid 90's

    thats so cool

  • oOo a GT, that is indeed a very nice screen, haha you should see about getting an LT next :P

  • sick dude great pickup!!!!! i still have yet to get any nec stuff but that thing is cool as hell dude

  • Glad to see you finally got one of these bad boys for your collection Jake

  • some good stuff to know and a nice hand held as well will have to try and track one down cheers on an freat video as always 5/5 !!!!!

  • I wanted one of these so bad. It was the only way to play Street Fighter II Champion Edition on the go... and that was reason enough to want one.

  • my original ds as had a dead pixel from day 1

  • Great review of the great GT! The screen is still, impressive as ever. The LT has the same screen, but almost twice bigger! The sound can be easily fixed by replacing all the sound caps. The display cap are also known to fail, so do keep in mind for that :)

  • I bet you paid a pretty penny for that! :) I just got a Duo-R for 150 from a guy from Japan

  • i got my turbo grafx boxed ..just like your..awesome system ...i want to get that pc engine gt ..can you use japanese hucard in that...thanks

  • Oh I forgot to mention just like the consoles the PC Engine GT only plays Japanese games and the Turbo Express only plays American games.

  • mnc12bird i send a invitation true your channel to be my friends did you recieved it ..thanks..

  • I remember Lukemorse1 hooked up a Wii to the system via the TV Tuner. The Wii-mote still worked.

  • LOL yeah that was awesome I mentioned it for this original video but had to cut it down for time.

  • sounds like yours need a cap repair. its real easy i own 2 of these and did the repair on both. its just as easy as the single cap repair on the gamegear.... Also out of the 2 i own one if brand new and has some dead pixels while the other that gets everyday use has not a single dead pixel. I know you can fix that sound issue and once u do the sound is so loud!!!

  • Haha, the green and blue dead pixels were the first things I saw when you turned it on. Lol. I also think that screen blurs less than my LCD TV haha. BTW, those dead pixels would drive me absolutely nuts. I've had one on all three of my PSPs, and all six of my Nintendo DS systems (2 original, 3 lite, 1 DSi)

  • when i heard 512 megs i got scared lmao p.p

  • I remember seeing that thing in Toys R Us when I was a kid. I knew instantly i'd never have one. It was 300 bucks! There was NOTHING that expensive out at the time. Not even the systems were that much. It was nuts.

That said, it's a pretty neat piece of technology for the time. But knowing its price, it was akin to the NEO GEO which was unbelievably expensive. Two systems I knew i'd never get to own in my life.

  • Do you think you can fix the audio capacitors?

  • Funny thing you mentioned the capacitor problem for the sound because the other day I got a Lynx for pretty cheap and the sound didn't work at all. Now I know it might be an issue with the capacitor(s). Great info!

  • awesome I want 1!

  • wow that is awesome that you got one of those! It is probably is bigger because it was a VERY powerful handheld then...sort of like the lynx!

    excellent review as always

  • those actually look like stuck pixles not dead. i know there is jrscreenfix and other programs. if you had the tv turner i would try to hook up through the AV some how and run it on the screen. might actually fix them.

  • What is a dot matrix screen

  • OMG :O, a PC Engine gt where I live in Canada (Quebec),Is SUPER hard to find

  • I would of been the man if I bought this to school playing SF2 in say 92'. Then I'll probably have it jacked from me after that. Seeing that it does have DC input, I might pick one up at some point.

  • Awesome review, I love the console reviews and pickup videos, all really cool. Shit, 6 AAs and it lasts 3 hours. Rip out the rechargeables!

  • You repeated yourself too many times in this video. I was like OKAAAAAAYYYYY turn the damn thing on already, lol.

  • That was the first truly awesome handheld ever. It's spells awesomeness. Lol.

I,too, was surprised at how small the original Game Boy was when I received my from snkjack a few weeks back. It was surprisingly small, tbh. =)

  • Holy crap, I was not expecting it to dwarf the gameboy that much! Great review, as always!

  • Great review. Heh, Volume Jack and Brightness Jack.

  • If you look closly you can see the LCD has Image Retention. look close at the street fighter name as it goes away its still there really. Image rentention fades tho but its pretty noticable on this. I have a tv that does this if i leave it still for a bit. It goes away tho unlick burn in.

  • @Xenokai360 think that might be youtube.seen it on other videos sometimes.

  • oh NM didn't see it/ yeah guess it does t hat. still not bad.

  • It pretty common for lcd's long as its still working it still looks nice tho. Even with it age

  • looks good indeed

  • I love how it looks like a bloated Game Boy.

  • Awesome man how much did that thing cost you I'm pretty sure those are quite rare so I'm figuring you paid a lot, tell me if you could when you get a chance.

  • Yeah I paid $70 for it locally knowing the sound didn't work. I looked on EBAY and most of them on there are like $160-180 for ones that claim to work fine.

  • Well it's cool you got one, even though I doubt it maybe maybe the sound part another handheld even more modern may work with it maybe you could switch em' if there is another handheld using the same sound part could repair the PCEngine GT and give it more value.

  • Turbo express is awesome!! I just got one.

  • Welcome to the exclusive club of people that have a Turboexpress man! I love mine!

  • Love the Turbo Express. It's nice that the screen has no ghosting, but text is near impossible to read on that screen. Mine doesn't have any sound either. :(

    Great video.

  • Great video Jake! For that much money I would just make a PC Engine cabinet! +_+

  • sweet. I just picked up a handheld myself. And I found out that the one I got is the UK version lol. As far as the screen, I remember when the PSP first came out, we had to exchange it like 5 times before we found a japanese version and had no problems lol, all the others were the chinese version.

  • i gotta get a turbo express be NEC. its awesomer than sega nomad.

  • Awesome video.

I was like you. I never dreamed this thing was that damn big.

It could have blown the Gameboy out of the water had they found anyway to lower the price point.

Damn near costs just as much to buy now as it did when it came out, too.

  • You lucky motherfucker!
