What a great song, god this takes me back to sitting on the floor with a big pair of bulky headphones on listening to my big brothers record collection. First time I heard this it totally blew me away, so glad that it still does.
I know that they disliked being associated with the new romantic movement but to me this is one of the greatest singles that came out at that point in time,I'll never sell my official CD copy of "Empires And Dance"EVER!
Wow, I remember holidays at the Mediterranean, listening to this in the car at full volume, with windows opened - youth, friends, sun and great music.... That's when the Minds were still a great band, unfortunately later they became absolutely boring... But when I listen to their early stuff now, I wonder why I don't like Trance and Techno...
Love love love love love....this is the best simple minds track, thought about it because BBC Radio Scotland played it last night as part of their nightly themes. Brings back memories of when my mum was a cleaner in the nightclub and I used to help her at the weekends...and the cool London DJ used to play this and I used to dance on the raised lit dancefloor. Oh my gosh, those were the days :)
Still sounds fresh and energetic today, what makes this song still sound awesome is that balance between the sounds of Kratwerk and the most advanced ideas in late 70s/early 60s post punk .
I had forgotten this track classic! I think if my memory is accurate it does have a similar sound/ tempo to a 1978 song by > Arpeggio " love and desire".
@djscotty1111 I didn´t know the Arpeggio song, but I just hear it on youtube and you are right it has a similar rhythm, specially the start of the song (to some extent)
I can't believe how many famous records I found surfing U-Tube today. People really don't know how famous and important "I Travel" by simple minds really was, and also what a big influence it had in the club scene. You either know or u don't know, and trust me I know cus I lived it!!!!
This song was a part of all the underground dance clubs in Toronto in 1981 ... the sound is so typical of many of those songs you associate with dance clubs which introduced may of us to the UK electronic dance sounds of SM and many more!
@jangenk Experimental New Wave????? What the F**K.....They were at the forefront of the Futurist sound along with Gaz Numan, Foxx, Ultravox, Cabaret Voltaire, Dmode etc....obviously a later 'convert' to this genre though you dont actually know what it was all about. By the way Futurism was an artistic movement from Fascist Italy which was a convenient label given by the musiv press...most of the bands had a similar kind of look....art-school types

Most extended versions don't do justice to the original but this one compliments and even enhances the original.
Thanks a million for posting!

Arpeggio should have sued them. The background instrumental is almost an exact replica.
