  • This is music stripped down to its barest essentials - voice, rhythm, melody. The video is not exactly spectacular - but this very fact makes it fit.

    Welcome back, Portishead!

  • Great voice, great song

  • That was intense.

  • best eva!

  • How so?

  • i heard this from skins

    Brilliant Song,Brilliant Show :)

  • mmmmm :)

    chillingly romantic.

  • soulful melancholy

  • guys guys plz come on yes its a good song but not the best plz i couldnt name the best song and this is not it. Please stop being wannabes and appreciate the song for it is dont go making illogical decisions its the best song in the world.

  • Who are you to say what people can or can't think? Music is largely subjective, your point would have been valid had this been an appalling pop song i.e. something by Girls Aloud, but this is something else entirely and a new sound to a lot of people I'm sure

  • lol please read the hypocrisy in your comment then get back to me

  • lol common sense , lord of the rings the alliances versus mordor pretty obvious whats good and bad. AS for music i want telling them what to say or think i was merely raising the question to wether their comments had gone too far .But instead your simply trying to be a failed smart arse questionning my freedom of speech, im allowed to say what i want long as it harms no one and thats what i did.

  • Now whose being the hypocrite? And yeah... you were blatantly telling them what to think. Goodnight.

  • I, for one like a lot of Girls Aloud songs, you are being a hypocrite.

  • If I were a singer in a band, this is the woman I would want to be

  • This song is perfect.

It's like they took everything I ever wanted in a song and put it together

  • I love this song,

Though it sucks that i only know it from Skins..

  • Trip Hop-Ambient simplicity simply at its best. With her haunting voice and the "Machinegun" industrial blast beats are addictive and the synth slight fill in some bars befor the chorus is colorfull_ a dark hue of blue or gray if music could be put through a prism. Cant belive critics panned the album but i think 3 is one of there best peices of work. Bravo-

  • well you cant really expect critics writing for mainsteam publications to actually "get" this can you? :-p

  • Absolutely brilliant song. Beth's vocals indescribably emotional. One of the most beautifully haunting voices I've ever heard.

  • you should listen to Under Byen - Puma, or Fever

  • Hendrix` "Machine Gun" cannot be played nowadays, because it is about the Vietnam War. This song is wonderful, one of the best pieces of music Portishead ever made. I really love them!

  • I was disapointed to find this wasn't a version of Hendrix's Machine Gun....none the less, it's interesting

  • does anyone have the instrumentals?

    please i really need them!!!

  • it wouldnt be that hard to redo on garageband or something?

  • Just astounding

  • I don't really know why I like it... the vocals are average.. so is the beat... so is the synth ^^

but everything together is like an atomic bomb blowing away your mind....

    awesome track!!!!!

  • im the same way. It is so simple but yet so powerful.

  • just listened to this today. it was a long time before when my eyes went wide, and smiling, for the music surpised me yet again

    it's just incredible.

  • for some reason this reminds me of ghost films.

i love this song! its eerie:)

  • Portishead = EPIC

  • this is FUCKING AWESOME!

  • it´s the fuckin best song from portishead since a long time!

  • It's not trance, I'm sorry.

I take it you don't like Aphex Twin or Squarepusher either?

  • Impressive. The guitar and drum effects on the song as quite reminiscent of Steve Albini's band Big Black.

  • Can someone please explain to me, from a musical standpoint why this is not bad? Like, I'm sorry, but the whole song is a drum beat I could have played after my second drum lesson, while the lead singer improvises a tune with her lyrics. Is there any innovation that I'm missing? I really like the few portishead songs I've heard and I wanted to hear more of them but this is garbage in my opinion. I really am not hear to troll. I just want to know if I'm missing something...

  • i think its the sort of horrifying majestic nature of the piece that makes it the bollocks....

its not neccesarily musically good...but its certainly not bad...its just very very different

  • oh it's bad

  • no its not...they're pioneering a drum sound...

  • The whole idea of music is that it's an artform. Art can be expressed in many different ways. Certain people think art should be only expressed in one way and nobody should ever deviate from the form. These people are called "Judgementalists" or, more fittingly, "Bigots". Also known as you folksie. You don't belong here.

  • Very well said, look for a freind req in your mail box- and keep educating music snobs, they seem to be taking over-

    Be well.

    R!oT-

  • Personally, I think the song is best heard in the context of the rest of the album.

Yeah, it's kind of out there, but I don't think it's intended as a show of musical virtuosity or prowess.

Also, I notice that this song sounds a lot better from the CD, played through earphones or a stereo system, than it sounds here through my laptop's speakers. A lot more nuance to the effects used on the drumline can be heard then.

  • i don't think that judging the quality of music by its complexity will take you far...

as far as i'm concerned, i frequently ejaculate when those synths kick in in the final bit.

  • Portishead is a band that enjoys having a certain musical freedom. So if they feel like playing and recording an ´unusual composition´ based around a drum sound, no one will, can and should stop that. If you don´t like it; too bad.

This song´s really giving me goosebumps, it´s haunting and hypnotic. I just recently started listening to Portishead, and I can´t wait to buy Dummy on vinyl tomorrow. Third´s also really a thrilling record.

  • its poetic... i dont think that it sounds good. it really reminds me of a 'machine gun' and i think thaqts the way it has to be.

the whole thing is very impressiv ("horrifying majestic nature")

  • SO FUCKIN gOOD

  • the ending sounds a little bit like terminator 2

  • machine gun:D

  • yeah does XD

  • Love Portishead! They're songs are all so different. Anyone know of any that are similar to this one?

  • No way - they're all pretty unique! Awesome stuff.... not to say they havent made the occasional bad track though.....

  • yo trippy ass song

  • muy buena banda. increibles

  • god i fucking love this band

  • Portishead The Best!

  • <3 luv

  • lovely tune.

  • I love this...

  • Her voice has so much feeling that it makes me want to cry. Music that touches the heart.

  • Shut the fuck up! Listen! then thing some about sound.

  • must be played really loud for the full effect

  • thom yorke wishes he wrote this song

  • one of the best tunes ive heard in my life

  • amazing

  • when i listen to this song i think about Apocalypse.

Make love, listen to music, drink beer but not Warcraft.

  • HENDRIX!

  • amazing..always loved this video

  • Comment removed

  • Why I always think on Terminator movie, when I here this.. ?? It s because the synth ?? Same sound.. but almost same melody.. Do you think they wanted it this way ?

  • should know MTV sucks

  • migliore musica del 2008

  • I saw a stripper dance to this song the first time I heard it. This song elevated the experience for me. Stripping as high art. Great choice.

  • shot by their thrilling sound !

  • Excelente regreso!

Espero que pronto vengan a México, ya nos hace falta un buen concierto por acá.

    AMO SU MÚSICA!!

  • It is weridly good. got it when it first came out. waited many, many years for it. sooo good!

  • I'll Be Back.

  • strangely good. the drummer's got control

  • portishead..

    the best!!!

  • On the first album they sound like massive attack, on the second too.

but third sounds just like portishead.

and this song is the masterpiece of a great cd, that runs through my ears since it came out.

    Thank you Portishead

  • This is probably the best thing that happened to music since Pink Floyd

  • somehow you are right...but you can't compare.

  • Opino lo mismo que tú, dos grandes bandas sin duda alguna.

    Saludos desde México, City.

  • Well...I'm sick of the 80's heavy metal.....going round an' round......

  • can´t stop listening to third, is there a cure?

  • This song just grabbed me - I'm totally on board for this... I love the Terminator-esque keyboard bit!

  • this is so powerful.. so unique, so strange, i love this feeling, they created something of their own really... this song its haunting its even scary, of course im saying its good damn song

  • This is the emperor's new clothes. What a disappointment.

  • after minute 3:52 the song become epic... :D

  • After that minute, the song become 'good'

  • this song and we carry on are the best songs on their new album. everything else sounds like vintage blonde redhead back before they became popular

  • Incredible song... but this version feels too fast.

  • amazing, great song

  • I agree.

  • this is their best album to the moment, one of the best albums of the year

  • I love Portishead!!!

  • nice new song the best of that album

  • They blow my mind. I love them because they confuse me, sonically speaking. It's like with the films of David Lynch, you don't always get it, but you love it ;)

  • Can't get enough.. They are so epic..

  • i just got hypnotized the first time i heard it..

if you liked this song, then you should heard this:

placebo - running up that hill

    chromatics - (entire album:night drive?

snow patrol - run; somewhere a clock is ticking

    enjoy

(ill realy apreciate if someone throws songs too, xD)

  • -thx for the songs, though I knew most of them - here's a suggestion : "pivot - O soundtrack my heart" ... I think they're fantastic.

  • what a swt song.

  • hypnotic..

  • TROPPO BELLA!!

  • I heard the NAME but then i finally decided to watch this video on demand LOVED what i heard ordered self titled from bmg......Now I LOVE PORTISHEAD!!!!!

  • demoledor!!!!!!

  • OK, this is an EXTREMELY good song. I hate to admit it guys but I was a bit disappointed with "Third" but this song is head and shoulders above anything else put out in the last few years.

This is the Portishead I want to hear more of - pushing the envelope. In fact, with so little of the music industry wanting to get near the edge of any envelope, let alone pushing it, not only are songs like this a massive breath of fresh air but they're keeping the hopes of a generation alive.

  • awesome song

  • wow such simple music, but it sounds so awesome!

  • this song blew one of my friend's comp speaker's out... that fuck'n awesome right there!!!! good thing it wasn't mine. =p

  • SUCKS TO BE HIM

  • in the very deepest of experimantalism Portishead found a new jewel that no one had ever seen. Again!

  • Sort of reminds me of Autechre's album "Untitled," except that "Untitled" is better in this case. Yet normally I love Portishead.

  • urdum

  • lo mejor de portishead

  • coollllll...great song..

  • I simlpy LOVE this song

  • i cant believe this. so pure, so brilliant! and the ending is breathtaking

  • Wow. Epic.

  • this is without doubt the best track on Portisheads' new album.

  • matter of opinion, if you disagree that's up to you - see if I care

  • the new portishead sounds, and in this case, looks KINDA nine inch nails(check out NIN's The Hand that feeds' Video), which isn't bad at all. great song.

  • whoa!

  • THIS SONG IS LICKY. ;D I LIKE SO MUCH. :)

  • her vocals are pretty werd but i love the song:)

  • cool

  • now thats a fuckn song.

  • Killer song

  • Great Song ! Good Album .. I love that Portishead has come out with a new album. This music .. is not for everybody .. but the people that this music is for will love it!!! .. if you can think/listen outside the box . you'll love this band .. pls listen to all 3 albums

  • Weird song, but I like it because it is Portishead.

  • can't stop listening 2 this song

  • I like this song a lot, I just feel like the beats kind of wash out her voice (and her voice is pretty incredible).

  • This is an innovative music!

    Great!

    I'm flying over the Himalaja....

  • great song

    I love portishead!!!

  • portishead RULEZ

unos de los mas grandes de todos los tiempos

  • WOW! What a song! :D

  • damn i dunno why but i am now hooked on this band after i heard this song once. only once on mtv 2 days ago and i honestly have never heard of portishead until i saw this song. the presenter was just saying that portishead released a new album and that he was a fan of this group. i just listened to the song and couldn't change the channel. im buying their album tomorroww. or whenever i got the time

  • same thing ... ive seen on VH1 clasic the vid

  • Und ich dachte, ich wäre der Einzige, den das Outro an den "Terminator" erinnert. Trotzdem ein geniales Stück Musik. Für immer in meiner Playlist.

  • very nicee

  • Nice beat... but it's Beth who really makes it reach a higher level.

  • nice delay effect at the end!!!

  • i love the terminator-themesong finish of the song. rofl, looks like they try to be different from the terminator-themsong, but its apparent!

    you agree?

  • Es increiblemente sano escuchar este tipo de musica en estos dias de musica tan contaminada! Genial!

  • amazing song! (and album)

  • I do enjoy this track but this isn't a masterpiece on its own. This type of arragements have been used and reused from quite some years in the EDM techno scene from German producers such as Bodzin and Schumacher. This isn't inventive or breakthrough like some have said. Check out Elektrochemie's Don't Go track. In my opinion they have some resemblence. Perhaps.

  • Third is an absolute masterpiece. You gotta love that old-school Industrial sound. Cheers.:)

  • o r or o r o r or r o r (bollox)

  • the finish is good =)

  • Gosh this sucks. My toenails just rolled up.

  • blueplant - It may soon be time for the nettles to sting, ken?

  • it sounds like it frezzes at the end of each bar subscribe to me

  • Wake me up when it's finished.

  • The song DOES sound a bit studenty perhaps at the start but it's PORTISHEAD! Give it a bloody chance. Listen like, PAST the 1 minute mark to the whole track - it's great, like all their stuff is. BUt then they could have remixed Old Macdonald & I'd have loved it. Great band.

  • Old good Portished :)

  • So should your mum but it doesn't stop her videoing herself masteurbating, does it?

  • fuck you i dnt even no hu my mum is! and nice name u dumbass

  • Agreed, what a bunch of crap

  • I think this is fantastic, I really like it. Its great to hear something interesting, I love how it slowly builds up. As someone that works in the music industry I think they should carry on progressing their music in this direction.

    Nice one!
