Yeah I get it, but since I have 4 gigs of ram and supposedly 32 bit kernel only accesses 3.2 gigs (or something like that) I just wanted to see if that small differential would make things a little more snappier. When I upgrade my audio recording program I will be booting into 64 bit but for other technical reasons. Thanks for the info. PS. When I tried the 6-4 boot it actually booted up noticeably quicker. Ill try again later. Maybe I didn't press keys long enough.
Does the 6 and 4 keys work even if your not using an official Apple keyboard and do you have to do this every time you want to open up in 64 bit. Last question how do I know it actually worked?
@benthemiester it should work on any keyboard that works with your Mac, and yes, unfortunately you'll have to do it every time, but since i've made this video there's increasingly less need to actually do this because most apps Apple make are in 64bit already, it's just really for people with Mac Pros.
And you'll know it worked because it should take much longer to start up :)
@dcsfilmproductions You cant change your EFI, not that I know of anyway. It's to do with your Macs hardware, i.e. the processor might not support 64bit, and in that case you just wont be able to run SL in 64bit mode, sorry.
you have a few things wrong, check out my video of this on my channel. but basically it works with any mac i want to say mid 2009 models dont quote me thats what my macbook pro is and it is a snow leopard feature and you can do this by restart
I want to build my own gaming computer and AMd one, with snow leopard running 64-bit is this possible? how do i install it? do I install it just like windows?
@aspiregemstone Well the thing about Mac OSX is that it can only be installed on Apple's own computers, ie iMacs, Mac Pros, MacBooks and Mac Minis. You'll have to either install Windows or Linux unfortunately. Apple has a lock on their OS, it won't let you install iron non-Apple computers.
@aspiregemstone No well just like DanWantsTech said Apple only lets you install Mac OS X on Apples computers but there is ways if you just search it up on YouTube but only will work with Intel not AMD. And its illegal but if you want to try go ahead.
Everyone keeps talking about the 32 bit and the 64 bit modes, and I don't really understand what they do. Is it how much processing speed it takes up or something? I'm sorry if I'm asking a stupid question, I just don't get it. =(
I am currently running the 32 bit version of snow leopard, but wen i want to install the the free 10.6.2 update from apple, it says that its not compatible with my OS. Do i need to run 64 bit mode to install the update? Thanks!
Hi, I did everything in this video yet my MacBook continues to boot into 32-bit mode. I checked that it is "EFI-64" first but when I hold down the 6 and 4 keys during booting up it just goes straight into 32-bit mode. Advice?
I'm not really sure, hold down the 6 and 4 before you press the power button and keep holding it until you see the apple logo, maybe you're not holding down for long enough. Other than that i'm not sure, you do have Snow Leopard Yeah?
outstanding as always!!! really helpful for new mac users like me.. tnx dan. btw i have a question.. this is not related to this video.. how do u you put application folder on the dock?

how do i see if i have enough ram to run 64 bit mode?
gr33n3y13 1 year ago
@gr33n3y13 Click on the Apple at the top left and click "About this mac", it'll tell you how much memory you have.
DanWantsTech 1 year ago
@DanWantsTech lol 32 Gb RAM! My computor has a 6 Gb limit! And all the newest ones have a 16 Gb RAM limit. So this is really only for the mac pros?

@InfuserGod 32 bit can only see 3.75 gigs of ram even if you have more. 64 bit can see a theoretical 16 exabytes of ram, which is a lot.
