@canammx1 its because you CLEARLY don't know how to handle a motorcycle [teasing] I have lots of off road experience myself and am in the same boat, ohwell 500 bucks and a bit of bordem never killed anyone
Horrific! please, next time put up a disclaimer warning people of just how graphic and bloody this incident was. i will be having nightmares for a week!
It happens to everyone. Everyone stalls, everyone falls, everyone has their ego broken once or twice. We're all human and we all make mistakes. But atleast he is making an effort to learn. Kudos
@wwfww No, not at all really. Most people in that class have never been on any kind of motorcycle before, the instructors really emphasize proper brake control and that riding is very dangerous, this drill would take place only a few hours into their first lesson, so to a newbie on a 400lb machine that they have NO experience with, locking the front brake would scare anyone. Even if that happened to me now I would be seriously shaken.
@Milkshayx yes, i crashed twice due to the front brake locking and a little bit of dirt on the tarmac combo. luckly i wasn't going fast. but the thing is tho that i think this classes are a bit of a scam. at least in my country they are so expensive it's almost unbelievable!
@wwfww It depends on the state. In some they are subsidized and are very very cheap to take, however in my state (MD) it was about $300. For someone who does not own a motorcycle already and know of no one that can teach you (let alone properly), then its not too bad of a price. Plus that is money that'll eventually be saved in insurance.
I went to the experienced rider MSF class, and did the same thing but not at low speed, i layed down about 10' of front rubber. I'm used to applying only 2 fingers to the brake lever, and the instructor wanted all 5 on the lever, well that really threw my pressure judgement off. I'm never going to one of these so-called safety classes again, i picked up a couple tips, but for the most part it was garbage. Everyone seemed impressed i didn't go down, but i felt in control the whole time.
@pilgrim4truth My course was very informative. I took the advanced class for experienced riders, and I found that I had a few bad habits that could have gotten me killed on the road. For example, we had a short notice danger practice, in which we had to swerve in the last possible second, and we didn't know when the "danger" was going to strike. When I swerved, I nearly hit another rider on the course. If that was on the highway, I would have been dead, and I have been riding for years.
He's all right... I've seen plenty of really bad mistakes by new guys where they rev the engine and release the clutch while doing the revving leading to a spill or crash immediately afterwards. This guy was at least smart enough to keep his speed low while testing the bike's braking limits.
Great save for someone learning ! A buell blast has very good front brakes for a starter bike so it would be easy to lock front brake for a new rider. Taking a class is a great smart thing to do or you could learn the dumd prideful way like I did and get three operation to rebuild your leg that will never be the same :)
Whoever this new rider is... You did an excellent job of not holding the front brake on and controling your bike. All the people on here talking shit either do not ride or have forgotten that they to were once beginers. And that we all make mistakes.
Good save on braking! Umm, is alll of that construction equipment inside the range fence? if so that's crazy unsafe. ... rear brake skid test? not unless its the ERC, that looks like the basic and skidding is not encouraged.
This is the part of the class where you're supposed to ride at about 25 mph and then hit the rear brake and skid to a stop. The rider just needs to practice more and keep the handlebars straight in order to pass this section of the on-bike test section.
they should teach about applying both breaks and how the front wheel i think is 70 percent of your breaking power and not to depend on it over the back break
The guy didn't know how the rear brake worked, so he was pressing so hard (in the wrong spot) that the bike leaned to the right at the same time he abruptly locks the rear wheel (screech) when he finally spiked the pad pressure to the rear disc. Probably no front brake involved.
@steelmesh ... I view vids in full screen on a 32" monitor. In this vid when she brakes, the front end does dive hard when the wheel locked. More notably, the front wheel stops rolling at the skid when the back wheel does not.
Jeani3d, those are DEFINITELY some scary moments when the front brake locks up. That's why it's so important to continue to practice maximum braking frequently. SMOOTH and progressive squeeze on the front brake, and light to lighter pressure on the rear. Always be prepared to release and reapply the brake if it locks up (as you did there in the video, good job!).
locked your front tire up. you hit it too hard. that's the brake you dont want to hit hard lol. i did something like this but it was my rear tire. not as scary
dude i worked at a motorcycle training cource when I was inhigh school and I cant tell you how many crashes i saw. Minor crashes of course but still, those bikers are all dinged up.
No matter how much people try to talk down on beginner riders, we have all been there!! And I tell you what even after riding 7 years, when that back tire starts sliding from under you it makes you heart skip. And the rest of the ride I'm the safest driver lol. maybe scared too.
When I took my safety course it was a class of 8 people, 6 men, two women. I won't say which two were the only ones to drop their bikes as you prolly already know.
@fergiy89 Watch the video again, the screeching sound comes from the rear tire, you can also see the rear going right. It's one of the common mistakes made by beginners, pressing that right pedal too much when most of the braking on a bike should be made with the front brake.
@machintruc313 I'm a motorcycle safety instructor, and that is definitely a FRONT brake slide. If it was a rear brake slide, the front wheel would have stayed straight and the rear may have slid out. Instead, because the front wheel was locked, the handlebars were free to turn (to the right, as it was), until the front brake was released, and the front wheel snapped back to center. The rider made the right choice by releasing and re-applying the brake.
@DoogesR1 Yes, that appears to be what happened. Some people didn't seem to understand it, or had an incorrect idea of what happened, which is why I commented.
@Daftseedy44 I'm completely baffled. Can you please explain why you think I'm a prick?
Some people commenting on this video had wrong idea about what almost caused the crash (they said too much rear brake), so I posted my professional opinion (I am a Motorcycle Safety Instructor that teaches a class very similar to the one in the video). Then DoogesR1 posted what appears to be sarcastic comment, so I asked him why he said what he said....
@zoblatski1 ohh, sorry I didnt reply earlier, too busy with ur mom and all......you didnt type in "you are", you typed in "your a". This clearly makes you a moron.
@DoogesR1 Yes that does clearly make you a moron. and i could care less if i didn't use you are, this is YouTube not an English class so like i said before. YOUR A trolling fag with no life that's why you had to come back and talk shit over the computer because you know your a pussy. kthnxbye

@MrReed1432 70% of braking is done by the front brake, obviously. What I'm saying is that the reason why this happened was that too much front brake was used, not that one should use more back brake for whatever reason. I'm saying that the guy who said "Too much rear brake not enough front" is wrong in stating that for this situation. Anyone who rides a bike knows this happens when you grab the front brake hard.
@fergiy89 that's not correct. it's the way the front brake was applied that was the problem. initial lever pressure should be added slowly to put weight on the forks, and as they're loaded, then the contact patch of the front tire will flatten out and you can apply more brake pressure. That's just a learning thing.
@MrReed1432 That's what I mean when I said "that's what happens you grab the front brake hard". It's an initial application of pressure. Which is what you stated, " it's the way the front brake was applied that was the problem. initial lever pressure should be added slowly". I'm lost as to why I am incorrect when we're saying the same thing?
@fergiy89 I think the answer to both of your problems, is that you're obnoxious, opinionated know-it-alls arguing on YouTube. And now I'm contributing to this shitbucket of comments. Hooray me.
where i come from when we take our motorcycle test we have to have the instructor on the back of our bike with us. no course, you just have to ride from new york to nebraska and back.
I WAS SCARED UPON HIS VERY EXISTANCE FOR THE MECHANICAL MACHINE WHICH HE STRADDLED AND WENT ZOOOOOOM, THEN SQUEEEECH! THE SPEED AT WHICH HE TRAVELED MADE MY VERY NERVE ENDINGS SUDDER! WOW UPON WOW!
Our instructor made fun of us for being too chicken to lock up the brakes. In the training lot, it's the best and safest place to find out what happens to the bike when the brakes lock up. Then again, my beat up trainer Nighthawk 250 probably couldn't lock up the brakes even if I tried. :)
Perfect example of GRABBING the brake and not squeezing the brake. Locked the front tire up. At least the rider released the brake and then reapplied.
that happened to me once. but not while MSF. i did know how to apply brake pressure progressively to avoid locking up while i took the msf. but this happened to me exiting the a freeway ramp i was close to the intersection on my brakes the when the wheel got on the white painted line it skidded. anyways i was slow enough by then and I let go the brake and reapplied and put my foot down. that's when i learned the painted lines on road are very slippery stuff. so new riders watch out for that.
I just completed my MSF today...I did eat shit the first day! I fell shifting in the middle of a right turn. Gave throttle with clutch down, let clutch go too fast, as I gained too much speed I panicked and hit the front brake and boom! Hit the pavement. Never rode before. I was okay, stinging road rash and sore joints. It killed my confidence but stayed focused and determined. I PASSED!
I took this class over the summer.. i learned some good stuff. out of 12 people they failed a 16 year old kid who was too scared and 2 older women who would not go faster than 10 mph. they drove too slow and wondered why they tipped in corners. if your going to take this class. dont be scared of the bike.
that's nothing, one woman in my Riders Edge class did like three wheelies (none of them on purpose) and fell over like 3 times. Needless to say, she didn't show up for the second day on the range.
OMGoodness. Yep I was shocked that the bike started skidding so I just let lose on the brake and stayed straight. I stopped fast though and felt I would go forward at that point but I pulled it off.
@Jeani3d it looks as though you fixated on the person standing there, then saw the stopping point and jammed the front brake. That was a close call but good recovery.
Yea, man. She almost died, but let off the brake with minutes seconds to spare. If she held on, she could have scraped her knee...oh, yea...she was wearing jeans. Well, it would have probably hurt.
@alextof08 Yeah but he locked his breaks. Thats not part of the test lol.. Those tests do not want you to even come close to locking your breaks, due to the fact its very dangerous and if you do it on the road way, not only is does it slow you down slower but it also gives u the chance of smashing ur face/Helmet into the ground.
That's just part of learning to ride a motorcycle, at least the rider didn't go down. I learned to ride on a mini bike when I was 5 and after that an SL-70, I prolly crashed a million times. I now ride GL-1500 Goldwing, I try real hard not to crash it.
@Jeani3d I've been riding for many years and I've loved every second of it. There are many things you have to be prepared for on the road, rain, gravel, fog, deer, idiots in cars, mechanical bike problems, and about a million other things. Prolly the biggest cause of bike accidents is simply, the rider was going too fast. Things can happen very quickly on a motorcycle, stay safe, and Cheers!!
Wow, I started crying when I saw this guy mess up... this video!!!

Good save. Load and squeeze.
Our instructor made fun of us for being too chicken to lock up the brakes. In the training lot, it's the best and safest place to find out what happens to the bike when the brakes lock up. Then again, my beat up trainer Nighthawk 250 probably couldn't lock up the brakes even if I tried. :)

i hope i dont fail my basic handling skills test when i go for my bike licence :{
PIGGKILLA 8 months ago
Perfect example of GRABBING the brake and not squeezing the brake. Locked the front tire up. At least the rider released the brake and then reapplied.
bh319644 8 months ago
@bh319644
Yes, I agree. I fel that it shows that the rider made a mistake, big as it was, but corrected very very quickly.
I find that this makes for a much better rider in the long run... Providing they learn from the moment rather than copy from it of course LOL

The B-last is a good bike to learn on.
vanson1200r 8 months ago
that happened to me once. but not while MSF. i did know how to apply brake pressure progressively to avoid locking up while i took the msf. but this happened to me exiting the a freeway ramp i was close to the intersection on my brakes the when the wheel got on the white painted line it skidded. anyways i was slow enough by then and I let go the brake and reapplied and put my foot down. that's when i learned the painted lines on road are very slippery stuff. so new riders watch out for that.
manimalaparampil 8 months ago
I just completed my MSF today...I did eat shit the first day! I fell shifting in the middle of a right turn. Gave throttle with clutch down, let clutch go too fast, as I gained too much speed I panicked and hit the front brake and boom! Hit the pavement. Never rode before. I was okay, stinging road rash and sore joints. It killed my confidence but stayed focused and determined. I PASSED!

exercise 10. day 2. Hey, atleast you let off the front breaks.. and didnt go down. Let me gues what he said "So.. what do you think you did wrong ?"
polivo0111 9 months ago
I always hated that stupid box, I can hang off the bike and do stop and go traffic without putting a foot down but that box still gets me.

I took this class over the summer.. i learned some good stuff. out of 12 people they failed a 16 year old kid who was too scared and 2 older women who would not go faster than 10 mph. they drove too slow and wondered why they tipped in corners. if your going to take this class. dont be scared of the bike.

sweet jesus that scared the crap outta me
Vape4life 11 months ago
that's nothing, one woman in my Riders Edge class did like three wheelies (none of them on purpose) and fell over like 3 times. Needless to say, she didn't show up for the second day on the range.

OMGoodness. Yep I was shocked that the bike started skidding so I just let lose on the brake and stayed straight. I stopped fast though and felt I would go forward at that point but I pulled it off.
Jeani3d 1 year ago 7
@Jeani3d You nedd to go in a straight line before you can break try that next time
macan285 6 months ago
@Jeani3d it looks as though you fixated on the person standing there, then saw the stopping point and jammed the front brake. That was a close call but good recovery.
itsgr82bl8 5 months ago
@Jeani3d
Yea, man. She almost died, but let off the brake with minutes seconds to spare. If she held on, she could have scraped her knee...oh, yea...she was wearing jeans. Well, it would have probably hurt.

Jeani3d 1 year ago
@Jeani3d thought as much. Good job keeping the bike up, I remember that part... haha... skidded for a while...
alextof08 1 year ago
@alextof08 Yeah but he locked his breaks. Thats not part of the test lol.. Those tests do not want you to even come close to locking your breaks, due to the fact its very dangerous and if you do it on the road way, not only is does it slow you down slower but it also gives u the chance of smashing ur face/Helmet into the ground.
RidingYamaha47 1 year ago
That's just part of learning to ride a motorcycle, at least the rider didn't go down. I learned to ride on a mini bike when I was 5 and after that an SL-70, I prolly crashed a million times. I now ride GL-1500 Goldwing, I try real hard not to crash it.
clintonearlwalker 1 year ago
@clintonearlwalker Yep I really didn't want to go down or to mess that bike up on my watch. LOL
Jeani3d 1 year ago
@Jeani3d I've been riding for many years and I've loved every second of it. There are many things you have to be prepared for on the road, rain, gravel, fog, deer, idiots in cars, mechanical bike problems, and about a million other things. Prolly the biggest cause of bike accidents is simply, the rider was going too fast. Things can happen very quickly on a motorcycle, stay safe, and Cheers!!
