Awesome! Its funny watching her wave her paw but then she realized that it was her just lowering her head that made her get treats! So smart yet so simple!
Thanks so much for the video. You have excellent timing and amazing knack with the clicker. Wish I had such good timing. Anyway ,will try your method soon.
I taught him to take a bow using the luring method, but he seemed kind of confused when i were not using the hand signal on the ground. Then, i watched your vid, using the free shaping method,it worked so much better.
The paw lift was happening as we were working on "shame" where paw came up over muzzle. I think I reduced criteria after first final bow also. So shocked she got it so quick I think! But that was my thinking. Find if I free shape and build it up a few times before only r+ing final behaviour it creates a stronger behaviour longterm. Great questions.
That's funny, before I even read the comments I thought to myself "I wonder if she has been training 'shame' a lot lately" :)
This looks great, I am in love with freeshaping. The bow I didn't free shape, I captured it. But pretty much everything else I free shape. It is just so much fun, the connection I feel with my dog while free shaping is unreal, we are truly communicating with each other! It's like "what will you do if I do...this? or THIS...?" :)
I run into something a lot that I noticed in your vid. The "extra" paw lift that the dog was throwing in. I noticed that you would click for the head drop w/o the paw lift to click, which I am sure helped clear that up with the dog. Beautiful bow at :26, but then why did you click for lesser bows after that? Not being critical, I am looking to learn. Beautiful dog! Nice job!
I had given up on free shaping and just use capturing or luring until I watched this. I taught my dog to bow in just a few minutes more after watching it. The hardest part was waiting for her to stop staring at me waiting for direction!
"waiting for her to stop staring at me waiting for direction" That's the consequences of luring. That's exactly why free shaping and capturing is the best way to get new behaviors.
How would you, say.. teach the dog to jump without luring? My dog never jumps on it's own unless I lure him a couple of times and clicking. Then he obviously tries that along with previously known tricks without signals :P
i think you should of used a jackpot when she got the behavior completed then she would of undestood that the bow was what you were looking for you could of given about 4 jackpot in the video . i know that ussually helps my dog get thinks faster
hey there! Don't do much jackpotting myself. the research that I know other people have done and from my personal records show no greater speed of learning when they are used. but whatever works. great that you can pick up on different things that you would do differently to other trainers - great way to learn I think. thanks for taking time to watch and to comment. :)
thankyou! She was a little thin at this point - we eventually found out she is allergic to chicken which helped her put on a bit more, but I agree - you got to love a dog that actually has a waist!
Woops, I had a typo there. Fantastic job. I had to rewind to catch how quicly you grabbed the head lowering. Anyone being negative doesn't understand what they are watching anyway. :)
Fantastic job. I had to rewind to catch how quickly you grabbed the head first being lowered, and how fast it progressed from there. Anyone being negative has no look what they are watching anyway. :)
Ha! I fond most people do not have a high enough rate of reinforcement when training and you are right, I take small steps when teaching something new which can make it look like they are doing nothing, until you see the behaviour grow. Pearl is 5 now and is recovering from TTA surgery - vets believe she is recovering so well because she is lean and well muscled, so there goes the getting fat theory! Good luck with your dog!
dnarli you are right. That is how I attach my cues. Others do it differently. In this case I have a hand signal and a verbal cue.
FYI Pearl has undergone reconstructive surgery on both her knees and the training games we play have ben a great help in getting her mental activity while she has been restricted in her activity - training is great!
I really liked how you showed free shaping, and how to use it. however i never heard you use the word bow, or whatever command you want to use. how or when do you start to associate the command with what the dog is doing?
Usually the cue is introduced after the dog is enthusiastically offering the right behavior. Like saying "You know this game we're playing? The word for it is BOW."
JuJu, I mainly will use fresh meat (chicken, beef, lamb) for my treats. A little bit goes a long way! Pearl is actually coming up to 6 now and is going in for knee surgery tomorrow after trying a lot of other stuff to get her knees right! Meercat, I will try and get some video of my new boy for you and use luring. I like free shaping cause it makes them think and I find that if I keep my rate of reinforcement up they don't get too frustrated. I am glad this has been of interest to you guys!
I always wondered what do other boxer owners use for treats ? I have a 2 yr old and 6 month old boxer. Some treats I can only give to the older one and still haven't found the best training treat for the right price.
Did she already know to paw like that a bit? It seemed kind of quick to be offered like it had been worked on before, no offense just me wondering:) You do have amazing timing and actually through watching this I have picked up a few more things. Thank you very much for posting this!
Thanks! I've taught the bow lots of different ways, predominantly with some kind of physical manipulation and this was quickest way, even though I'm not a perfect trainer! I find the hands off training makes a huge difference in the animal playing a big part in the training process as opposed to waiting to be physically manipulated, I really like it. Still, each to their own :)
Wow! How old is she? Smart dog! Yeah this might work for me cause luring on bows and crawls.....just wasn't working out for my dogs and I XD

Wow. When I get a dog, I will definitly try this! So fun and so rewarding for both you and your dog!
A question though. If you want to add a vocal command, when would you do this?

@Redsmellycow34
Clicker means: Good dog, I liked what you did, you win a prize
