  • AmAZinG! my friend told me about whoopie slings, but this seems even faster.

  • What if the tree is larger than that and the straps don't get that close together?

  • awesome technique!

  • great review, what size carabiner do you recommend for thos over 100kg?

  • Can this be done with the standard Explorer Deluxe do you think? Or would I need to get stronger rope?

  • How likely is this method to damage the rope on the hammock?

  • I just bought a Hennessy Ultralite, and the cord is way too thin for this. It just doesn't hold in the rings.... Could I get one of those private messages too?

  • u know that u can use 4 carbines instead, right? that is much lighter in fact, cheers

  • Awesome, thanks for putting this wonderful tutorial together dude!

  • Nice once jimmy. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I'll be using your method and combining it with mine for sure.

  • what is the thinnest rope you could use with this method?

  • Does this method work with the thinner line that comes with the HH backpacker?

  • Wow, this is perfect for a injury or something. The ability to do it one handed is amazing! thanks for the vid!

  • very nice man, good idea., thaks

  • you sound EXACTLY like bear grylls

  • Question for you, I was thinking of running the same set up as you (brilliant idea BTW) but had some reservations. In an email sent to me by Hennessy they said that the use of any metal connective bits "could very likely result in damage" to the connective lines. How long have you been using this setup and have you noticed/seen any damage to your lines? Thanks!

  • brilliant idea!

  • foookin brilliant guy!

  • smaller rings should work for smaller cord...

also if you can't find rings, you can cut up

single chain links. you can also use two links

in a row (still linked), in a similar way.

    HAMMOCKING !!

  • sparron, how do you get your "round once and thru the half" knot undone to take down the hammock?

  • @vstateblazer When you're undoing it, you can hold the rings apart, this prevents the rings from binding on the rope and allowing you to easily pull it out.

  • gr8 job!!!!!!!! I cannot express in words how wonderful this design is that you have thought of. I hate having to tie the damn thing off all the time. Awesome post!!!!

  • genius idea! I tried it with my hennessy expedition and it worked great! I wanted to invest in a more lighter hammock, and was looking at the Backpacker and the Hyperlight. Would either one work? Or how could I make them work with this setup? Thanks!!

  • its not paracord its thind out climbing line

  • Holy Shit! That's a damn clever idea!

  • Also works well with 2 carabiners

  • @mcsparron I have the exact same question as @mkreitz2...

I bought the Ultralight Backpacker and am aware the existing cords are too thin for your rap ring technique.

How would you recommend replacing the cords with a proper size (cut the existing line near the hammock and knot the thicker cord to it)..? Something else?

    Also, what size/type of cord?

Thanks for your help and I love the videos! Bring on HH 102!

  • I really like this setup I made the mistake of tying knots in it and spent an hour trying to feed them back through. This method looks great is it really bed for the hennessy hammock rope if so is it possible to change to use this and if so to what rope and thickness

  • Could you let me know what cordage you're using? Thanks!

  • @t42beal13t - from the looks of it he is using ~8mm static cord, the same as used by climbers for prussik loops.

  • Can you use this method for hanging the Hennessy Expedition model or is the stock cord not suitable?

  • @BottomFeeder10 This works fine on my Expedition with the standard cordage just remember to tie it off as described.

  • What kind of cordage should you use for this? What kind and diameter?

  • What if you were to just clip 2 biners through the strap and garda hitch those? I love this setup as you have it, but I'm hoping to simplify it / reduce weight.

  • @madmusk33 - I would try that too. Being a climber with lots of krabs lying about, I think it would work just as well.

  • that's awesome, but how much extra weight do the 'biner and rings add? and what cord is that?

  • Class. Thank You Kindly for sharing.

    peace n love all

    stay safe pip

  • So cool Thanks

  • So useful and easy, the mark of Genius. Thank you very much!

  • Can you eliminate theweight of the Carabiner by attaching your repel rings to the ends of your webbing? I use the same principle in climbing.

  • What cord should I get for this to work on my Hyperlite?

Just some 6mm climbing cord? or is there something lighter weight I could use?

I really don't know much about ropes :/

  • I have mine setup that way, but I was thinking recently of putting the rings at the hammock ends. That way, they act as a drip point for water running down the line, Have you by chance tried it?

  • So what size are the rappel rings? Is there only one standard size, or?

  • 7 strand paracord is too thin?

  • @Shapmb paracord has a very poor heat/abrasion rating and therefore really isnt suitable for this method, it is also very thin with a soft outer and the risk of damaging/pinching the inner is quite high also. i havent tried it but i wouldnt be confident in recommending it. try a siberian hitch and a wrap around quick release knot at the other instead.

  • @Shapmb

I just ordered an Ultralight Backpacker and plan on removing the existing cords and replacing with something more suitable for this method of hanging. I like this method better than the whoopie's. Does anyone have any recommendation on what cord will work best - Paracord or other and what thickness?

  • @mkreitz2 paracord is way too thin, ive sent you a private message regarding the subject.

  • Comment removed

  • This method point loads the rope and doesn't spread the weight evenly like a good knot or lashing. Hennessy's most repaired hammocks are ones with these speedy ways to tie, myself included, where the ropes get all chewed up. Not recommended !!

  • @pyaco039 i appreciate that some people have experienced issues. i my self have been fortunate enough not to and i do believe that is because i have the thicker rings and not thin ones like other people. a knot decreases the breaking strain of a rope by 50% on average anyway.... my cord has been checked recently and has no kinks, breaks, marks or other damage... i have always maintained that this method should be used with care and not on smaller diameter stock cord.

  • Thanks for the vids @mcsparron; your comment "not on smaller diameter stock cord". Are you saying that I can't use this method on the chord that comes standard on the HH?? Have you changed the chord on yours as mine seems to be a lot thinner? cheers

  • @30156 i still use the hh as it came. no mods have been made. however if you have any of the ultralight hh's then the cord is much thinner and will not be suitable.

  • Brilliant technique! Thanks so much for making this video. I was always messing around setting up my hammock, I am going to get these things for the next time I am trekking!

  • @AafkeArt thanks a lot! i appreciate the feedback! give it a go first and let us know how it works out for you though!

  • used in NZ backcountry on two 5 day trips. brilliant idea, thanks for uploading

  • Used it for 30 days in the bush, worked brilliantly, thanks

  • @rockynanach epic! thanks so much for taking the time to let me know! i hope it continues to work for you!

  • Needle sport must have a new stock in since i phoned them ""HANDS UP"" new to this tried it with the quick release knot brill thanks for your reply

  • @martycuff1 my apologies if i came across a bit short, wasnt aware that needle sports were out of stock! they are a great company and even know that i personally use those rings for this set up! im glad you got the quick release knot sorted and i hope that you find this set up makes your life easier! make sure you learn the fat tree method! i would have got caught out in brecon last month had i not remembered what to do! ;)

  • RAP RINGS if you cannot get the rings in the uk i sent for them from the states MOUNTAIN GEAR WITHIN 8 DAYS FROM ORDERING

  • @martycuff1 it quite clearly tells you where to buy them in the uk at the end of the video in the credits. many other users have bought them from needle sports with no issues whatsoever.

  • @martycuff1 needle sports has loads in stock!!!!!! buy them from the uk!

  • Excellent system, new to this but find the ring knot slips a tad ,Is the rope smaller than the rings in diamiter ? ANY CHANCE YOU COULD SHOW THE GAUARDER HITCH KNOT AGAIN SOME TIME PLEASE Martycuff1 uk

  • @martycuff1 of course the garda hitch slips, it is not a knot. if you dont do the quick release knot that is shown in the video then you will just fall instantly onto the floor. the quick release knot will not slip under any circumstances.

  • @martycuff1 of course the garda hitch slips, it is not a knot. if you dont do the quick release knot that is shown in the video then you will just fall instantly onto the floor. the quick release knot will not slip under any circumstances. 3.18!!!!

  • thanks my friend! see you soon!

  • Excellent system! I´m going to try this!

  • @survivormex make sure that your chord is thick enough and also that you dont get thin rings! thin rings will damage your chord! THICK climbing grade rings are best!

  • excellent very excellent way to rig the hammock five stars *****

  • @skipinout thanks a lot! really hope it works out for you!

  • o yea on more thing. I got these rings at REI for people not close to one it's REI.com. 4.50 USD a peace.

  • @civicboy1000 thanks for pointing out the american retailers.

  • (mcsparron) hey man I just got the set up you explained in this video. If there are any new people that are getting into this type of camping this is a cheap an great way to hammock camp. Great video bro keep it up..

  • Thank You!! The major downfall (minor as it may be) is the tie, tie, retie because it wasn't tight enough or too tight!! Quick and easy. Hennessy makes a excellent hammock, they should consider adding this option!

    1000 Thanks

  • @2007430 pull harder!!!!! hahah its def my favorite hammock!!! love it!

  • how much weight does the rings and carabiner add?

  • @t42beal13t for the exact carabiners and rings i have its 195g, just weighed them for you. for me the only extra weight is 2 rings because id take the other bits on expeditions anyway.... so i understand its not for the gram counters among you. plenty of lighter carabiners out there such as the DMM Phantom which will bring it down a little bit....

  • @mcsparron Wow thanks for the quick response time. I'm debating using them.

    Great videos!

  • @t42beal13t im at home for a change, just got the hex tarp for the hh, going to make a new video, hennessy hammock 102, over the weekend if this hurricane weather stops for a bit! got some more bits and peices to share with the world!

  • Hi there where would one find these descending rings, can only find them on US sites? Do you know of any in the UK?

  • @neospawn02000 this is a constant question. it says in the credits and also in previous comments. needle sports.

  • any suggestions for a similar setup with the ultralite backpacker?

  • @chhsoccer324 not really, the spectre chord is just too thin and i think it will break....

  • This is great. Been thinking of how I should make my hennessy hammock easier to set up.

There's one thing I wonder though. Who do you open it if it's really hard tensioned.

Been searching for a video that shows it but without any success.

    /Marcus, Sweden.

  • @maadination im afraid i dont understand your question. please email it to me, rephrased and i will do my best to answer as soon as possible!

  • @mcsparron

Hehe, okay. When I read it again I saw I didn't write everything I thought. (couldn't sleep and it was in the middle of the night) ;)

What I wounder is what you do to release it when it hard tensioned.

I prefere it really hard tensioned and that could be a problem with the garda hitch (I believe) when I want to pack it down.

Is it just to pull the end of the rope down (or up depending on the way you do the loop) to let go of the claming?

  • @maadination its a quick release knot so it isnt fixed... you should just pull it and that part will come undone. to get the garda hitch undone you just push the rings together and it will slide out.

  • I ordered the kit from Needle Sports and it arrived today. I waited until these arrived before setting up the Hammock for the first time....and it worked A TREAT!! Very easy set-up and what a fantastic Hammock.

Thanks for the vid mcsparron...even the explanation about the quick release knot was extremely helpful :))

  • @AlFrosty they are a good company needle sports! hope you found them helpful! the hammocks are brilliant. remember to create as little friction as possible when you pull through to tighten up at the end, this will ensure as little damage as possible! dont wanna burn the sheath of the rope out! shouldnt happen with such fat rings but just be careful! quick release knot is vital, i tied a normal knot first time and nearly had to cut the rope!!!!

  • I too live in the uk and was wondering where you got your Omega Pacific rappel rings, if you could let me know I would greatly appreciate it.

  • @ragegap at the end of the video, in the credits: "for uk users, rap rings are avaliable from the ultra helpful needlesports" they are up north. I had a long email conversation with them about whether the rings were suitable and they were amazingly helpful. delivery time was epic. hope that helps.

  • @mcsparron Thanks for the prompt response. needlesports it is and ordered. :)

  • @ragegap my pleasure. be careful when using it all though! remember to create minimum friction when pulling the rope through....

  • I'm gonna have to go try this with my explorer deluxe... this seems like a great method. Thanks!

  • @outdoorsman20x6 im glad you liked it, let me know how it goes!

  • @mcsparron do the tree hugger straps come with the snake skins?

  • @johnlevity tree huggers come with ALL HH hammocks so far as i am aware..... if you dont have an HH hammock then you can buy tree huggers or similar ideas from many different places. they are basically a length of seat belt from your car, with two loops stitched in at each end.... they just stop the rope cutting into the tree by increasing the surface area over which the pressure is spread.....

  • great idea, really clever, ill use it for sure...thanks

  • i just picked up the gear to try this. but i notice that one end is slipping. . I'm in my living room so its not super tight anchored on anything but its slipping any ideas? ahhh i just saw the quick release knot at the end. . duh!

  • @Ccoach55 you must do a quick release knot to stop it slipping and it MUST be a quick release knot or you will never get it undone.....

  • i just picked up the gear to try this. but i notice that one end is slipping. . I'm in my living room so its not super tight anchored on anything but its slipping any ideas?

  • also i have the expedition a-sym is that suitable for the carabiner technique? i know the ultralight isnt but is mine?

  • @danmagyver it has the thicker specter chord so it should be fine.

  • great video, technique for setup is brilliant. silly question i guess but im new to hennessy and knowone is chatting about it - the rain fly, is it meant to be set up with the shiny side up or dull side up or does it matter? its just i thought the fabric may only be water proof effective on one side of the rainfly and it actually doest really specify anywhere, but seems as how you have tested it in jungle, my bet is im safe doing what you do to stay dry. so dull facing sky? or shiny facing sky?

  • @danmagyver on the rain fly, there are taped seams. i.e: they have heat sealed the seams/joins. The taped bit needs to face down..... so the top will look smooth all over.

  • I am a recent new owner of a Hennessy. I bought the carbiners and descending rings today. It really makes sense.

  • I have been researching the Hennessy Hammocks and watching all the available videos here on YouTube. I just ordered an EXPLORER DELUXE A-SYM ZIP and want to get the components for the Garda system, as this seems to be the way to go. Would you post the exact components and sizes needed and where I might order them online here in the states. As I have no experience with any of this gear and it would be greatly appreciated.

    ,

  • @Gotafish1 im british so i have no idea but most people tell me REI.

  • Rad! Thanks for the post!

  • Here's what the folks at Hennessy say, "we don't recommend using any kind of metal devices with the ropes because they cause abrasion and possibly rope failure.

The Explorer Ultra rope diameter is 4 mm

The Explorer Deluxe rope diameter is 6 mm

  • @kc7fys i can understand their perspective from a legal point of view. however i know literally hundreds of folk on hammockforums net that use karabiners and all sorts of other methods. this is only a recommendation and take it as you will. im sorry you went to the trouble of purchasing things that you cant use... it does say in the description that the thinner chord isnt appropriate!

  • @mcsparron I'm a hammock geek now. I'll surely use the rings and biners--who wouldn't. Thanks for teaching me a simple technique I didn't previously know. My roots are in Iowa, farm life--I learned something from this--and I'll use the technique for my DIY hammocks.

  • Now I'm wondering if this is a smart idea with the thin spectra cord, as Hiro below commented. It appears your cord is thicker and would interact differently with the rings. Hmm... Maybe it's whoopie time.

  • @HardestQuestion it even says at the bottom of the video description not to use it with the thin spectre chord. DONT! it will break.

  • Thanks to this guide, before I even set up my hammock for the first time I went off and got myself some hardware - probably saved me 20 minutes setting it up on my first time.

Also a good tip I figured out, once the hammock is back in the snake skin, I put a simple knot on the rope that's at the "head" of the hammock, so when I pull it out to attach it to the tree I know which end my head will be facing when I set it up.

    great guide, cheers!

  • @zantarez im glad it helped! i actually just put some electrical tape round one end of the chord in bright red so that i can tell it apart instantly. its actually going to be a point in my next vid anyway. thanks!

  • I just ordered two carabiners and four rap rings. Thanks!

My only question is whether this is going to wear out the spectra cord faster--but I'll find out.

  • @kc7fys it will a little bit, but it depends how you do it. use your spare arm to take the weight off the chord as you tighten it to avoid friction burns on the sheath.

  • i am using the thinner cordage that "actually" comes with this hammock and the exact climbing rings you have and the cord slips thru every time when weight is applied. you appear to be using thicker cordage and perhaps this works with something thicker but i am having a lot of difficulty making your system work with the thin cord that comes attached to the hammock. is there a better climbing knot you can show with "thin" cordage.

  • @Hiro21122112 my chord "actually" came with the hammock... not quite sure what you meant by that... its stock hh chord... i have never taken it off or swapped it for anything else... maybe you have an ultralight version that uses the spectre? in which case as stated in the description you shouldnt use a garda hitch. also, the chord cannot physically slip through with the knot after the rings!!! of course it will slip through it you dont tie it off... even with the chord that i "actually" have!

  • @mcsparron no idea what you mean by that. mine "actually" came with my hammock. it is the original hh stock chord. maybe you have the thinner spectre chord and an ul hammock in which case, as stated in the description, this is not a good idea. if you dont tie a knot after the rings then of course it will slip.... thats obvious...

  • @mcsparron I figured it out--McSparron is correct, of course, part of the HH product ships with a thinner Spectra cord, and some of the less pricey models ship with a softer, larger diameter cord--as pictured in the video here. I actually thought his hands were smaller than mine, and his rappelling rings were smaller than mine--but I bought the very items in this video, and this solution doesn't work. Oh, well, this gives me impetus to make whoopie slings! Thanks for a great video!

    Jonathan

  • Great tutorial. I'm interested to find out where you got your Omega Pacific rappel rings from as I seem unable to find a UK supplier. Many thanks.

  • @BoxOfBlueMedia needle sports. lake district. order online.

  • Comment removed

  • You should look into upgrading the suspension to a whoopie sling - it is lighter in weight, requires no hardware, is simpler to adjust, weighs less, and IMO, better. check it out. I just made my own with about $10 in Amsteel Blue cord.

  • @fredvs79 i really dont like whoopie slings and as im carrying the climbing hardware anyway on expeds im not actually carrying any extra weight anyway... just not the way to go for me!!! also happy with the tree huggesrs, wouldnt like to use thinner because i dont want to damage the tree bark.

  • This video solved my recent problem. The Garda is the way to go, this will work perfect for my expedition HH. Thank you very much for the education. If your ever in America and want to hike the AT, it runs through my backyard, get in touch. Happy Trails.

  • @hoppy8199 im glad i could help! be careful now as i may actually look you up one day!

  • @mcsparron look me up anytime not a problem. im always ready to hit the trail for a few days. take care bro.

  • Excellent video man! Thanks for sharing....

  • Great video! Thanks for taking the time to make it.

  • brilliant!

  • Trekkingnut--I'm totally digging your education on the Garda, and specifically how it applies to the HH. I'm off to order some rings, and I will use this techniique for both of my HHs (Expediton and UL BP. Thanks for the video! Coolkayaker1

  • @coolkayaker1 i would seriously reconsider using it for the ul bp. in my opinion the spectra chord is too thin and there is a high risk of the sheath breaking. its up to you at the end of the day but id just do it using the fat tree method instead rather than the garda hitch.

  • thank you so much, you are the man. This definately makes it a real sinch. Bute mate

  • @rockynanach im glad you liked it mate. it does make it super easy eh!

  • i need help with the last knot that "helps finish it up" i believe u said it was a quick-release knot..?

.. i am very new to knots.. THANKS!

  • @BAMAman1100 it wont let me post links on here. just go on google and type it in. you basically just pull a bight through the loop made and then pull it tight. sorry i cant be more help.

  • @BAMAman1100 no worries, we all start somwhere. very very simple knot can be used in many applications. just bang it into google.

  • @BAMAman1100 afraid i cant seem to post links so i will have to google it. :(

  • @BAMAman1100

Roll Tide, brother! The quick release knot is known as a Slippery Half Hitch. Simply wrap the loose end around the rope once, make a loop and slide it through the opening you created as you went around the rope. Next, simply pull it tight against the garda hitch and the buckles. To release, simply pull the loose end and the knot unties itself. Videos are easier than explaining it. Good luck!

  • @DelRJohnston thanks for helping clarify that whilst i was away.

  • Absolutely brilliant! Here in the U.S., I've been using the Ray Mears quick knot setup, but I am going to change to this!

  • @990plm thank you, go to hammockforums for more tips!

  • Wow that's a brilliant!!!

    Cheers mate 5 stars!

  • @Mig2133 glad you liked it! thank you!

  • You sold me.....way cool setup! Thanks!

  • @larrylynn123 glad i could help!!

  • Dude... This is brilliant: I'm running out to get the gear now!

    Thanks!

  • @whatpraytell im glad it was helpful! im going to do another one shortly on what to do if the tree huggers dont reach all the way round the tree, obviously you cant clip the carabiner on so you cant use the garda hitch.....but you can still use the rings will let you know when i post it up!

  • @mcsparron So yesterday when I went out to get gear for this setup: I found out that fatter descent rings are better (more surface area to grab the rope) and that the more symmetric your carabiner is the more evenly your rings will pull for a tighter grip on the hammock rope.

Thanks again. This setup is perfect!

  • @whatpraytell i have omega pacific rap rings, they are very fat, however, if you dont put that extra loop and quick release knot in then they can slip out and you will hit the ground pretty hard... as you bounce around in the hammock, it will loosen the rings if you dont have that extra loop! my carabiner is the perfect width for two rings at the bottom so they nestle next to each other and cant move.

have a look at the video i did about what to do if the tree is too fat for your gardahitch
