I dont care about her vocal range, Madonna is exciting & has a unique voice! Her live singing has improved 200% since 1996 when she took singing lessons for Evita! God, LOVE her!

Madonna has a beautiful voice, but her performances are always about so much more than simply singing - something she does better than all the other divas, and why she's more successful than them, is conveying her emotions through her singing voice - we believe she MEANS what she's singing about, she FEELS the words. Her Grammy for Evita is confirmation of this, if any was needed.
Funnily her own music often doesn't suit her voice. As this video shows, she sounds a lot better performing more soulful and jazy type songs. Most of her songs are difficult to sing, even for good singers. Don't really know how to explain this but the melodies are more like spoken words. I really love the sound of her voice, just wished she was more in control of it. Especially in the low register it's really warm and powerfull.

@lhimm@lhimm Yes, it seems that they overdubbed her vocals on the official S&S DVD, but I've watched several fan-recorded performances of "You Must Love Me" from S&S and all of them are very similar to the DVD version with only slight variations (because they're all live!). All you have to do is watch one of the amateur clips you mentioned.
And the performances I used from RIT and CT are indeed sung live. Nice try though!

My favourite ever Madonna performance is her forst live Ray of Light on The Oprah Winfrey Show. I understand why you didn't include it though, echo effects are out on her voice (as it goes with the song) it is completely live however.
People should seriousley watch it though. The notes she hits are crazy, and literally the whole crowd go mental (including Oprah, and a group of old women who look to be having the time of their lives jumping around to techno.)

Whitney is wildly inconsistent. None of the other females can put on a show like Madonna and still sing. Singing while dancing is very difficult. All the performances in this video were 100% live. Madonna has a very good range and pitch. More importantly, she vocally connects with the material which cannot be taught.

I watched her live on Sticky and Sweet tour, well it`s the truth she had some difficulties with her voice during some performances. Whitney and Mariah sings better but they don`t do the show! Madonna is a good studio singer. I suspect that she doesn't train her voice in-between tours--if she did, she would be better. She is quite brilliant acoustically ---her performance on David Letterman is a testament to this.
Well, Madonna has always been more an iconic pop artist than a strong vocalist, so it's a bit unfair to compare her voice to Celine's or Mariah's, they are totally different artists. But at least Madonna at 53 always sings live while dancing her ass off at the same time. Who else has done or will ever do that? The artists you mention are 100% vocalists, they barely move on stage. Madonna used to be really good, her voice is great if she doesn't mess around on stage. She can sing really well if she wants. I saw her in the Virgin Tour, Who's That Girl Tour and Blond Ambition and she was really good. Her Sticky and Sweet Tour was just horrible, horrible. Her song choices we not good and the versions were terrible. She needs to keep the fans in mind when she performs. She does the songs her way, selfish, very selfish.
You can really HEAR the improvement from the time before she did 'Evita' to after. And to be frank, she really does have a very pretty voice. I would call her a well-controlled mezzo-soprano with an average range and decent control.
I don't know why but i always think that Madonna was lipsyncing and when i watch this video, i was like " OMG! she has a beautiful and stronger voice!" and i really appreciate this <3
@liob1611 I've watched plenty of fan videos of both of these songs and they're very similar to what's on the DVDs. At worst, the performances on the DVDs might be edited together from more than one night.
My dad always said if she hadn't become the biggest pop star in the world, she would of been a hit on broadway. She's got that kind of voice.. not the best but she knows how to use its its maximum and she doesn't sound like anyone else.

if you catch her at the beginning of her tour, her voice is great. saw reinvention tour and confessions early on and she was pitch-perfect. saw sticky & sweet tour at end of US leg, and she sounded like bad karaoke. she doesn't have the pipes to do it every single night. Though Mariah and Christina clearly have incredible voices, their style of singing wears me out in about 10 minutes...that a-oh-a-oh-a-oh-aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-oh-a-oh-aoh in every song...good grief.

Madonna is a good studio singer. I suspect that she doesn't train her voice in-between tours--if she did, she would be better. She is quite brilliant acoustically ---her performance on David Letterman is a testament to this.

Well, Madonna has always been more an iconic pop artist than a strong vocalist, so it's a bit unfair to compare her voice to Celine's or Mariah's, they are totally different artists. But at least Madonna at 53 always sings live while dancing her ass off at the same time. Who else has done or will ever do that? The artists you mention are 100% vocalists, they barely move on stage. As for Lady Gaga she's only 25. Let's see what her shows will be like after 30 years!

Did you really need to add Lady Gaga? I give you Celine, Whitney and Mariah.... but Lady Gaga? Her voice is average, nothing special. Madonna has more personality than that copycat even in her voice. Anyway, this video proved that Madonna can sing, her voice is unique and personal, when she sings she's more communicative than most of the biggest vocalists out there. She's UNIQUE in everything.

Madonna used to be really good, her voice is great if she doesn't mess around on stage. She can sing really well if she wants. I saw her in the Virgin Tour, Who's That Girl Tour and Blond Ambition and she was really good. Her Sticky and Sweet Tour was just horrible, horrible. Her song choices we not good and the versions were terrible. She needs to keep the fans in mind when she performs. She does the songs her way, selfish, very selfish.

You can really HEAR the improvement from the time before she did 'Evita' to after. And to be frank, she really does have a very pretty voice. I would call her a well-controlled mezzo-soprano with an average range and decent control.

if you catch her at the beginning of her tour, her voice is great. saw reinvention tour and confessions early on and she was pitch-perfect. saw sticky & sweet tour at end of US leg, and she sounded like bad karaoke. she doesn't have the pipes to do it every single night. Though Mariah and Christina clearly have incredible voices, their style of singing wears me out in about 10 minutes...that a-oh-a-oh-a-oh-aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-oh-a-oh-aoh in every song...good grief.

@hotmarriedgays that is true her voice wear down eventually, however Mariah no longer possesses a voice like whitney's voice its GONE, and unfortunately for both without their voice they are NOTHING, Madonna in the other hand has the fact her songs are iconic unlike Mariah's forgettable #1 songs (which were manipulated to go #1) and Madonna can put on the hell of a show, Mariah works better than a sleeping pill when it comes to her entertainment level

Madonna is incredible. When she sings about dancing, you can tell she really wants you to dance. When she sings about love, you can tell it comes from the heart. Madonna has a lovely voice and she sings with passion.

Sure, many others have bigger, higher, & stronger vocals than Madonna. But that doesn't matter as singing is MUCH MORE than just having a TECHNICALLY superior voice.. Singing is about making the listener connect w/ the mental &, more so, the EMOTIONAL content & intent of the song. It's about "affectivity". And these other divas have NOTHING on Madonna when it comes to the AFFECTIVE POWER of her singing.
For w/ Madonna, it;s not about vocals-- it's about EXPRESSION.
