The film was seized by the police at its New York City premiere. Later, a policeman in Ann Arbor, Michigan, ordered the projector stopped while the film was being shown to students at the University of Michigan. He confiscated the print. Four student officers of the UM Cinema Guild were arrested on obscenity charges.
The film was used by Strom Thurmond to prevent Abe Fortas from becoming Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
