It could have been over his prostitute girl friend or a revenge shooting by the communists for his alleged involvement in the murder of a 17 year old communist or his long overdue rent. None of those reasons seem like pure idealism to me.

There is another one, much more simplier: a lot of people died in late 1920s and early 1930s struggles, both sides. Both were idealistic. One of them was Horst Wessel. People blame him for his death, because its inconceivable a nazi been murdered withouth that beastie guilt. Simple as that.

With the fall of the Third Reich in 1945, Wessel's grave was in communist East Berlin. The memorial was destroyed and Wessel's remains were apparently disinterred and also destroyed.

As a serious student of European history, I am deeply indebted to danielwachholz for finding this and posting it.

What impresses me about this video is the level of street violence and resistance exhibited at this funeral. They had to call in a tank! This funeral occured before the Nazi takeover of power, because at the funeral eulogy the speaker says: "when we take over power". But even before they took power, the Nazis were obviously well organized and uniformed.

Conditions in Germany in the 20's led to violent street brawls. Society was polarised into two opposite visions of where they should go. The Communists were supported and financed by the Russians, who encouraged economic sabotage and street violence. The nationalists thus viewed them as traitors. The "Brown shirts" AKA stormtroopers formed initially to protect Nazi party meetings from violent disruptions by the Reds.
