  • See Dean Kamen speak on June 22nd 2009 @ the worlds longest running conference on creativity and innovation: CPSI Conference. Founded by Alex Osborn, who invented brainstorming and creative problem solving.

  • He INVENTED brainstorming? That is a ridiculous claim.

  • THIS IS AWESOME! REALLY AMAZING!!

  • there are a lot of ignorant comments on here...i lost my entire left arm to the shoulder when i was blown up in iraq, its not fun and there is no replacement for god given limbs. on the other hand it is the closest thing there is to the real thing.

  • All these immature idiots laugh and joke about things and take all for granted until they lose something they never considered they would lose.

  • that's the way it usually works, yes.

  • if there are no freakin´lasers attached to this freakin´arm, he can keep it!

  • or evolution gave us the ability.

  • God gave us this gift of thinking and reason.

  • "God gave us this gift of thinking and reason."

    YES! Praise Vishnu!

  • Well technically Vishnu is not God... you are probably better set to say Brahman if you had to name one Hindu deity comparable to the Christian concept of a triune Godhead...

    Praise Jesus.

  • "Well technically Vishnu is not God..."

You've been misinformed. The Rigveda, the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita all refer to Vishnu as not only a god, but as "Parameshwara" -- the "*supreme* god".

Brahman is (supposedly) impersonal (even transpersonal), unknowable, suffusing all reality. It has more in common with pantheism ("all is sacred") than with a deity like Yahweh who is described as speaking, being in one place (say, the top of Mt. Sanai), etc.

    Praise the Invisible Pink Unicorn.

  • Praise Jesus and thanks for your response.

Hinduism is similar to Protestantism - Various sects with various beliefs... I am unsure if you speak Hindi.... anyhow.

Praise the Lord God Jesus Christ ... and Have a Great Day...

.... Invisible Pink Unicorn... sounds like a new Sobe Drink... LOL

  • Praise the Celestial Teapot and thanks for your response.

"Hinduism is similar to Protestantism - Various sects with various beliefs."

The core documents of Hinduism -- the Rigveda, the Upanishads and the Baghivad Gita -- are like the core documents of Christianity -- the Torah, the Gospels, the Acts, the Epistles and the Revelation. Yes, other texts have been added to them, but those are the core. And those core documents call Vishnu the "supreme god".

    Praise the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

  • Say, didn't your parents ever teach you it was impolite to make fun of another man's religion?

    I don't decry Bertrand Russell

Why do Atheists always attack Christians... Go pick on a Muslim... and mock their Prophet...i dare u

It is said (was it Twain) tell me a man's prejudices and I will tell you his religion... Praise Jesus... King of Kings...

Spaghetti Monster... Atheist don't plagiarize. Thought you could be more creative than that my dear.

    Praise Jesus

  • "didn't your parents ever teach you it was impolite to make fun of another man's religion?"

If you expressed belief in the literal existence of Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy or Zeus, should people be obliged to not point out how silly that is?

"Why do Atheists always attack Christians...Go pick on a Muslim...and mock their Prophet...i dare u"

"U" have got "2" be kidding! Atheists like me mock Islam all the time! (and every other superstition) There are just far more Christians using English.

  • Though I am a Christian... I have acquaintances from other faiths... There is a center for Islamic study near my house here in Nor. Cal.. if you would like to address them about the falsehood of their religion I could give you the contact information... Of course Muslims are obligated to treat all fakirs with less than welcoming receptions... Are you brave enough to do this?

  • "There is a center for Islamic study near my house here in Nor. Cal.. if you would like to address them about the falsehood of their religion I could give you the contact information... Of course Muslims are obligated to treat all fakirs with less than welcoming receptions... Are you brave enough to do this?"

Pal, I've been directly telling Muslims what I think of their religion for the 24 years that I've lived in San Francisco.

    You're WAY behind the curve.

  • ahaha...a real muslim or any believer of any faith knows not to insult anyone else's faith otherwise you would be insulting your own..

i question your faith and your understanding of the world.

  • @mohammadhudna Didn't sharia law just sentence a talk show host from liberia to death for being a sorcerer.. because he made predictions about the future.. hahaha you idiots are so far from the 21st century it's kind of scary.

  • "I don't decry Bertrand Russell "

You're more than welcome to try. What would you say? That he was so ridiculously...logical? ...sensible? ...ethical? Atheists wouldn't take umbrage at anyone challenging their worldview. Just like scientific theories, freethought thrives on competing views, as long as they can demonstrate their validity.

    "Spaghetti Monster... Atheist don't plagiarize."

Do you even know what plagiarism is? There was none involved in my post. The FSM is in the public domain.

  • That is the point... My religion teaches me to remove flaws in my own life before doing so to others... except Twain but he is my home boy.

... You have a lot of built up tension... Is it do to a lack of female attention? There are many beautiful and lovely women at church... Go there and find a good loyal wife - Not like these secular cheats who will only love you for your money, possessions, or temporary looks.

  • "... You have a lot of built up tension... Is it do to a lack of female attention? There are many beautiful and lovely women at church... Go there and find a good loyal wife - Not like these secular cheats who will only love you for your money, possessions, or temporary looks."

"Built-up tension"?! Spare us all the amateur psychological evaluations.

I've been very happily married to a beautiful, intelligent and gracious woman for 18 years now. And yes, she's an atheist as well.

  • Enough of this... Praise the Lord Jesus Christ... I am thankful for the gifts I have been given...

Now I have to get some rest... I have church in the morning and on Monday I have to make some money so I can give more of it away...

bricology.. I hope you find true happiness in life... free from fear and discontent toward your fellow man.. Work hard and give it all away. The only things in life worth loving are your family, friends, the Lord and the benefits of hard work... God Bless -J

  • "I hope you find true happiness in life... free from fear and discontent toward your fellow man.. Work hard and give it all away. The only things in life worth loving are your family, friends, the Lord and the benefits of hard work."

I _have_ true happiness in life, thanks very much, and it's free from the fear of fairy tales and superstitions about gods, devils, paradises and hells.

And the notion of a 24 year-old kid lecturing a 46 year old about what matters in live is utterly laughable.

  • Ahhhh.. Pathtowrath and Brincology ---Will you tow fags shut the fuck up! Ya'll sound like a couple of idiot. Path- No one cares about your money and your religious views! bricology - you are almost 50! You're And Old Ass Man you sound like a bitch ass 15 year old defending his favourite cartoon- Dean Kamen should invent something to kill you two to make the world a better place- STFU you Tools

  • I second that.

  • It's- two fags and- idiots - and I agree... bricology and path you guys are morons. bricology is an impotent old fart who should be looking for retirement homes - typical old guy with gripe to pick. And pathtowrath is a delusional twit - who needs to spill his guts to everyone like YouTube is an AA meeting. Two Self-Righteous

    Bastards - GO AWAY

    --Dean Kamen You are Awesome!

  • CornellianInSpain --

    1. If you're going to slag in English, first learn how to speak English.

    2. I'm "almost 50"? I'm as close to 50 as you are to 15. I'm far younger than Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the internet, younger than Bill Gates, Steve Jobs or Steve Wozniak, who basically invented the computer you use. You're just another ignorant 20 year-old, but if you're lucky, someday you'll make it to 45. Will your opinions no longer matter then? Grow the fuck up.

  • No, you're much closer to 50 than I to 15 - You said you were 46. But I am not headed toward 15 in 5 years. You will be 51 in 5 years. Accept being an Old Guy - you cantankerous old buzzard. And yes, If I make it to 46 I won't be a troll. You need to grow the fuck up. You know what happens to the old lions in nature? The young ones work together to exile or kill the old useless ones (hint). The world belongs to the young. You had your go - your generation left us with a lot of problems. Be gone.

  • I'm 45 now, as my profile says. I'll be 46 in 4 weeks. Your profile says that you're 20, which is 5 years from being 15. Learn to count.

Regardless, your notion of me being "old" is fucking ridiculous, as is your calling people "fags". YOU need to grow up. And if you want to try to pull a "young lion" on me, I'll be happy to meet you anywhere in the Bay Area and we can see how tough you really are (or aren't).

And I'm sure that in 25 years, you'll be ready to roll over and die. Yeah, sure.

  • I train at King's Boxing Gym in Oakland

    843 35th Ave

    In Oakland

I be there at 3 this saturday. Ask one of the trainers or the lady behind the desk that you are there to see Ramon or Lil' Loco - If you don't have gloves they got them there but you need to bring your own mouth guard and hand wraps.

  • So first you say "You know what happens to the old lions in nature? The young ones work together to exile or kill the old useless ones (hint)" -- and now the way that you propose to demonstrate this is through sparring at your gym?! Sorry, but boxing ain't my style; nor are spelling bees. As far as I know, lions don't engage in either. If you want to try to demonstrate what you think young lions do to older ones, we can meet alone on neutral ground somewhere in the East Bay, no back-up. PM me.

  • "The world belongs to the young."

Fascinating. So you actually believe that "the world belongs to" people who have accomplished nothing, have zero power and very little money. Someone's living in a fantasy world, and it ain't me.

Of course, by your "logic", Dean Kamen, who will turn 58 next week, is out of the running. Not to mention that the most powerful man in the world -- Barack Obama -- is 2 years older than I, and consequently, irrelevant. Yeah, right.

  • Yes, Professor bricology - LOL -That is exactly the kind of response I'd expect to hear from an Old Timer such as yourself. Gates, Woz, and Jobs had seen success in their respective fields way past the age of 46. You're way past your prime, yet you haven't made as great an impact on society as Kamen, Gates, and Jobs - when they were 46 they were busy creating a better world. At 46 you are engaging in trite controversies with 20 year olds. Pathetic!

  • I'm nowhere near "past my prime". At 20, you don't even know what "prime" is; you're just another ignorant fuck who hasn't seen any of the world, learned anything or lived in any sense of the word. You're some anonymous punk, hammering ignorance into his keyboard.

"Engaging in trite controversies with 20 year-olds"? And what does that say about YOU -- "engaging in trite controversies" with 45 year-olds? Check back with me in 25 years and list your accomplishments; you certainly have none now.

  • "It is said (was it Twain) tell me a man's prejudices and I will tell you his religion"

    Uh-huh. Twain also said these:

"The Bible is a mass of fables and traditions, mere mythology."

"If there is a God, he is a malign thug."

"There is no other life; life itself is only a vision and a dream for nothing exists but space and you. If there was an all-powerful God, he would have made all good, and no bad."

"Faith is believing something you know ain't true."

    I couldn't agree more completely!

  • Geez Louise... Mark Twain was a bipolar author who didn't not support himself until the age of 29. Though I enjoy reading his stories... rich and layered. You did not address my question about your uncouth behavior?

Praise Jesus... Accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior and you shall eternal life...

... I am so thankful for my faith and for my conversion... I live a life free of fear... I fear No Man But God...

If you want to criticize someone about their faith.. how about a Muslim?

  • "You did not address my question about your uncouth behavior?"

My behavior isn't uncouth, so no apology is necessary. And no manner of uncouthness could possibly counteract the past 1,700 years of Christian atrocities.

"... I am so thankful for my faith and for my conversion... I live a life free of fear... I fear No Man But God..."

    And I fear _neither_.

"If you want to criticize someone about their faith.. how about a Muslim?"

Been there; doing that. Doesn't preclude me from doing this.

  • My entrepreneurial activities went wild - as a fund manager made a 256% return in 2002 and a ~400% return in 2004... I left the market early in 2005 and went into a commodity heavy portfolio... I thank the Lord for giving me the patience to weather the vagories of the market - 50% of my earnings have gone to charity and scholarhip packages The rest of my life time earnings will go towards helping others. If I was still an atheist I would have spent the money on women, drugs and cars Praise God

  • When I was 18 I was an engineering student. A strict Atheist attending a prestegious Univ. in Northern California...I experienced what Sartre called "the existential nausaum" - life had no meaning... I had a conversion experience at 23... and I cannot speak for others but my life has been wonderful since I welcomed Jesus into my heart. I have found the woman of my dreams who will be my wife next year...She is a GORGEOUS Scandinavian polyglot... For me Life as an Atheist was bleak...

  • "When I was 18 I was an engineering student. A strict Atheist attending a prestegious Univ. in Northern California...I had a conversion experience at 23"

Ah, the wisdom of the 24 year-old. And how do you know that you've "converted" to the "right" religion? What objective criteria did you use to determine that the supernatural claims of Christianity were valid, but at the same time proved that all of the other religions in the world were false? Seriously: I'd like to know.

  • "The rest of my life time earnings will go towards helping others. If I was still an atheist I would have spent the money on women, drugs and cars"

Amazing story, given that your profile says that you're 24 years old.

And I'm not the only atheist who laughs at the claim that all atheists are interested in is "women, drugs and cars". Some of the greatest philanthropists of our era -- Bill Gates, George Soros, Warren Buffett -- are atheists, and they're hardly fixated on women or drugs.

  • i think, i'd rather like to have my limbs regrown if i lose them.... but a robotic arm has it's advantages

  • hey genius....hope you never loose your TAIL

  • sound suxx ....

but the arm is nice .....

  • Science, reason and great minds like this man will be the future of mankind. Not these backwards ancient and decaying popes, mystics and other religous figures. God did not give us these great things, but human ingenuity and reason. There is no God (at least not in your pathetic books)

  • You seem bitter.

  • who gave us ingenuity and reason?

    riddle me this, batman!

  • Very impressive! The sound quality, however, is terrible; wish I could understand him better.

  • This man is a blessing to the world. His inventions are making the world a better place.

Look up his water purification system. He's made some of the most amazing things!

    Thanks Dean!

  • wonder how much it costs..

  • omg

  • This is truly revolution!

  • im sure it would be great to hit you with it. attached or not.

  • i would cut off my arm on purpose just to get one of those

  • ahahah

  • i met him at a FIRST comp. in annapolis, he game the same speach

  • Amazing, but its just baby steps with this technology at the moments.

With the continuing leaps forward in technology I'm confident it will be possible.

In the next 20-30 years to have a perfectly unnoticeable replacement limb linked neurologically into the brain. What a nice thought :D

  • yea dude, but actualy I hear around the hospitals that this will be availible later this year and it will be more customizable to you. Allso actualy if I had one of these I would wear it without the skin. personaly the robitic look is so freakin cool!

  • Omg that is so kl ... you know id want it all like terminator :P so you could get aftermarket ones eh.. I hope you americans try to intergrate guns/rockets into soldiers replacment arms. (I know they wouldn't really...just the sorta thing I'd enjoy ;)

  • yesterday at the robotics regional in hartford dean kamen came and showed everyone the progress they have made over the past year on this project and its incredible. They had the robotic arm working and a veteran that had lost both his arms feeding himself a grape. It was just a video, but it just shows the amazing progress we have made.

  • See dude this stuff is the future man! I can't wait to see how this thing turns out! And Nuketime I tottaly agree with you dude!

  • why cant they make robotic arms and legs for people whi are cripled

  • Because their handicap lies in a neurologic problem. The lack of active nerve to connect to, or inability of brain to trtanslate stimuli is more than likely the reason for the lack thereof in the people you ignorantly called "crippled".

  • this guy built robotics arms for amputees during the summer...sum people just go to the beach

  • so when other ppl are lazy he make a good thing for mankind...

  • the hell does that mean

  • They won't let me post it online.

  • Don't hate the player folks, Hate the creator of the game.

  • Now I won't have to jack myself off anymore - the cyborgs can do it for me. Hooray!

  • This video is pretty old, about a year now. Dean Kamen has since improved the arm making it have, I believe, 24 degrees of freedom. The arm in this video is controlled by an exoskeleton worn by a person off camera. In his final product Dean plans on using a wireless connection to the brain to control the arm.

  • sure, i bet the military is eager to show off a prototype arm to the public.....

    That's why it's a video.

  • dolcedolore

You should read more news articles..

  • this thing is either, controlled by something in the next room(off camera) or fake, why the footage, why not just bring in the guy with robo-arm infront of the ACTUAL audience, instead of showing a 10sec clip of it.

  • First, DEAN KAMEN. Second, you don't present a fake to the TED Conference community. Try researching something you know nothing about before spouting off accusations like you know everything about it.

  • Dean's niece goes to my high school.

  • You know that they'll probably fuel theses arms with hydrogen fuel cells that are recharged with methane or propane. Check out the latest issue of Popular Science. In it they talk about some Darpa funded robo-arm that has 25 joint motions. The bottom picture on page 37 is the best looking real robo-arm (unskinned)I've ever seen.

  • He has actually scrapped this seemingly altruistic project in favour of creating a Segway-like transporter that runs on mechanical arms instead of wheels.

  • do you mean legs?

  • This robotic prosthetic arm is no small achievement. Dean Kamen is a one-man miracle.

  • WITH THE MILITARY. Durrh.

  • I bought a Segway and it went totally crazy. It chased me around the lawn and then it pounced on me and started humping me. Damn you Dean Kamen!!!

  • sheash, just think what we could do if instead of throwing all the money at the irack ( har har, google it) we contributed to science!

  • "We can rebuild him!"

  • LOLZAR

  • LOLZOR

  • If I were Bill Gates, I would write Dean Kamen a Billion Dollar Check!

  • I hope Kamen succeeds with this.

  • mmm...interesting....them walking krazy army robots are crazy though.....

  • Skynet must be destroyed.

  • lol

  • The arm seems quite smooth. And 14 degrees of freedom should give a lot of flexibility. Last June (i.e.2006), I saw in a NHK documentary where they showed some really cool robotic arm stuff too.

  • Once you have cybernetic prosthetics for both arms and legs bionics aren't too far behind, and android soldiers wouldn't be far behind cyborgs.

  • I was on a FIRST robotics team in High School. Yes, Dean is absolutely brilliant.

  • Dean is the inventor of Segway.

  • segway is a useless piece of junk

  • I need to see proof that the guy wearing the arm was in control of it. For all we know, it's controlled by a guy with a laptop behind the camera..

  • Do you know who Dean Kamen is? If he were bullshitting, then he could kiss his reputation goodbye.

  • I guess we'll see. If this thing is what this video claims it is, we'll be seeing it in mainstream media soon. IF not, this will be the last we ever hear of it. Regarding the segway scooter, I thought he quit too soon. I thought he should have developed it into a one-wheeled version with no handles...a one wheeled skateboard if you will.

  • That's quite a string of beads.

  • Or is it some sort of prototype modular robotic device that's going to revolutionize neckware?

  • Hawaii tradition they use to make the tourists look foolish :)

  • we need arnold schwarzenegger to throw this thing in a vat of lava like yesterday.

  • Because if they asked me to create a humanoid killing machine, I probably would've declined. When are these geeks going to get a clue. Anything the DARPA is asking for is going to be used to kill women and children with.

  • Yeah, like the internet.

  • But who knows what the future will hold

  • Maybe there are some exceptions.

  • yeah, like computer animation.

  • I for one welcome our new cyborg overlords

  • Fabulous! Kamen is an ethical Edison and a humane Tesla!

  • If I had one of those I would make all of the world my killing grounds, destroying everything that stood in the way of my total cyborg world domination. I would take the finest in high tech manufacturing machinery as my harem, and our children would be both legion and legendary.

  • "I'd give my left arm for one of those."

  • All I have to do now is cut off one of my arms.

  • so, he was controlling this with his brain? i know that is the goal but he didn't look sensored up or anything

  • very impressive, kudos to Dean Kamen again.

  • I have both my arms and I want one!

  • Awesome idea! A third arm! Way better than a Segway.

He can call it the Zaphod!

  • need a Philip K Dick android head to complete the Zaphod look!

  • why stop at one extra? Doc Ock style, baby.

  • ILL TAKE 10

  • Skynet is here.

  • "Thats what we did with our summer vacation." ahahahahha
