@NoggaNewt - well the bass sound is similar to geezer butlers of the era. this show is known for it's excellent sound production and gear, not "poor" by any means. What you are hearing is more likely a combination of things like dead flatwound strings, his personal playing style, and small 12" speakers in the amp cab he's using, as often the amps+spk cabs they used on this program for bass were the same 4x12 orange cabs+amps as the guitarist used. I see sennheiser 421 mics. nice mics
"UFO Live" for me is one of the best Live Albums of all times (together with Lynyrd Skynyrd's "One more from the road" and Thin Lizzy's "Live 'n dangerous"). It's unsophisticated, raw and full of power.
this is the real "space"ufo ,not to compare with the later "rock"ufo -nothing against schenker, but this is spacerock, according to the name of the band, and bolton was the genius.
yes this ufo,.... jimi and janis were still alive, zep III hadnt come out yet, duane allman was still alive,.... not sure about morrison....this shit is fucking killer....
Bought the record back in the day. Really a worldclass act in the making. Many basic mistakes, bad timings etc. But who cares, the general idea is just great. Still got this LP and still play it at times, ha!
I want mooooore of Mick Bolton!!! UFO's seconds album Flying is the best music ever played, i could cry all day they split after bringing out the best album of all time. :(
After their success in the mid 70s, I bought UFO 2 (some years after its release). Very spacey and unique under produced sound. It got damaged that same year by walking outside with it in the dark (and with a head change). I kept it all these years later even though it had a gouge in it right in the middle of Star Storm. I just sold it last year for $15 as is. In ex condition it's worth $50 maybe??????

I think this is somehow connected with all those Jerusalem UFO sightings.
@juacozeppelin the lyrics in question were not written by Plant, Page, Jones or Bonham...in fact, many more times they "borrowed" not only the lyrics, but also the melodies - hell, the whole songs of early blues masters like Willy Dixon, Muddy Waters, and alot more -- the Zep just rocked them up and made their fantastic versions of them. Take the time to investigate -- it's good for your brain!! hahah 8]
I have wondered since 'Phenom' LP ...WHAT HAPPENED TO BOLTON??? When I got the 1st LP with Schenker I thought they now have 2 guitars, till I cked the credits. Thx much 4 sharing this piece of history!
@recman1207 In 1973 they went to Germany, Michael was in Scorpins at the time, and Bolton forgot his passport, Scorps were supporting UFO at the time. UFO asked Michael if he would play with them for the gig..something like that anyway.....
Simply beautiful music. This band kicks ass. The rock music of today have nothing on the classics. Rock music today is nothing more than whiny bullshit and it all sounds the same.
Dang, in this vid Phil is 22, Mick and Pete are 19, and Andy is only 18. Is it just me, or does Pete look just like Gary Thain from Uriah Heep in this video. Check out The Wizard promo and tell me if you agree.

@DarkForces99 this tv show often used groups album covers as backgrounds. the album cover itself just looked like generic space rocks to go with the 'cosmic' space/ufo theme, though theres nothing spacey about the music, so why did they name themselves ufo to begin with?
@progjazzfusion Because there was a club in London in the sixties called UFO where the band played under their original name of "Hocus Pocus". They were spotted at the club in late 1969 and signed to Beacon records.
@progjazzfusion for one reason, because the hip underground club at the time was called ufo. floyd, hawkwind, and of course mogg's group played there. ufo was a ladbroke grove rock group that grew up in the shadows of hawkwind (definitely a space rock band). the mogg/bolton unit DID have pretensions to being a "space rock" group, and at times they got a little "spacey" (well, "far out" at least).
wow, I didnt even know UFO was around that early! I saw them in '77, my first concert, they were opening for AC/DC, who were unknown at the time. Concert cost $3. I saw UFO again oepning for Ozzy in 1982 on Randy Rhodes' last concert the night before he died. Some crazy guy drew a snake out of his pocket (dead) and threw it at the guys in UFO. Later on, the same guy threw another dead snake at Ozzy.
@z1chuckster right on, chuckster! i'm no producer but I know what i like and this 70's deep metal sound is awesome! metal today is either that low-growl death metal mumbo jumbo or otherwise unintelligible hard rock trying to copy metallica, et al. Give me Budgie, old UFO, Cap. Beyond and handful of other 70's era bands and i'm happy.
I agree. I'm beginning to understand more and more why Steve Harris, Kirk Hammett, Dave Mustaine, Frank Hannon (Telsa) and Mike McCready (Pearl Jam) all site UFO as one of, if not their biggest, influences. Even without Michael, this band could crank it.
@16penney In the early '80s he was guitar roadie for Michael Schenker in MSG. Still had his chops then, because he could play Schenker's solo's note for note. Too bad I don't have the copy of the Dutch magazine anymore with that interview of the MSG members :-(
Yep, Phil singing, Pete Way on bass, and Andy Parker on drums. They would pick up Schenker soon. Mick Bolton was the guitarist for the first two studio albums and a live one I think.
The sound of UFO before the Schenker era reminds me of Black Sabbath too. Nothing bad about that, I'm just saying that it reminds me of them. Unlike Welshbluesman, I don't think they were trying to copy Sabbath though. I just think they shared the same influences.

the heavy 70's sound is a conglomerate of many things...analog tape, compressors, and other gear that is inaccurate in terms of frequency range, transient response and distortion compared to modern gear. Also different miking and mixing techniques, flatwound strings on basses, etc, etc, etc. Everything adds up and results in that colored early 70's sound. Even moreso on albums than live in studio like here.
yes I do recording and I try to emulate this 70's sound sometimes. My fave bass strings are "Half Rounds" which are halfway between the dead flatwound sound like this video and modern strings. "Half Rounds" can also be called "Ground Wounds". REcommended if you want more of an early 70's bass sound like this, but maybe not quite all the way as dead and flat sounding.
i agree. I also like Phenomenon with Schenker but after that they got softer and away from the space rock......then the keyboards oh no! But yeah Mick Bolton years are the best. The Early Years 70-73 cd rocks.
Yeah, I recently bought the album and loved it. Nothing wrong with keyboards, but they didn't really do anything to create that spacey atmosphere for their hard rock sound after Bolton's departure.
"the Hunter" is not by Free. it was a 60's blues standard that many bands played since then...Blue Cheer, etc. This has been discussed at length here many comments ago, so see the earlier comments if you want to know more about the origins of the song "The Hunter".
The Hunter is by Albert King I believe. Great song. Also theres a clip of led zeppelin covering it in 1970 at the royal albert hall here on youtube awhile back. Blue Cheer's version is the best in my mind.
FLUBBBBBY BASS SUCKSSSSS

The best years of UFO were with Mick Bolton. Thanks for this awesome video man. Keep rocking!

They are singing The Hunter by Free 2:27

"the Hunter" is not by Free. it was a 60's blues standard that many bands played since then...Blue Cheer, etc. This has been discussed at length here many comments ago, so see the earlier comments if you want to know more about the origins of the song "The Hunter".

The Hunter is by Albert King I believe. Great song. Also theres a clip of led zeppelin covering it in 1970 at the royal albert hall here on youtube awhile back. Blue Cheer's version is the best in my mind.

Yes, Albert King did the original song. It was written by Booker T. Jones
