I saw and heard Menuhin play this aria in a tiny mountain chapel in the Alps near Gstaad. It was summer. His face was lit by a ray of early morning sun. He was so thin, so fragile, almost as about to fly away and dissolve himself in the thin air his incomparable violin had created. When the aria ended, I I thought " this is not a man playing. Am I alive or are we in heaven? "
Menuhin was the greatest musician of classic music i´ve ever heard. I will never understand how great people can die..not only musicians, i mean people like audrey hebpurn, gaudí, frida kahlo... but the world has to remember of those great souls. Why don´t children learn about menuhin in school?
@jadefree1 Menuhin the greatest? Listen again to how he stumbles through this piece; his poor phrasings, his lack of intonation, his jittery trills, & his utter disregard for tempo. If you think this is violin playing at its best, I'm afraid there may be something wrong with your ears.
Take a moment & listen to a real master. I'm talking about the one & only Michael Hegeman. I guarantee that his playing will make you cry, as it sure does me.
@gijsphilip While looking at Michael Hegeman's channel page, I couldn't help but to think of Jack Benny & how he used to show up such violinists as Heifetz, Menuhin, & Isaac Stern. Of course, with Jack Benny it was all just a part of his comedy act. However, with Michael Hegeman, the man really seems to think that he's a virtuoso; a slight variation of the Emperor's New Clothes.
Wheres the rest of it, Damn it iv been waiting 20 years to hear and see this video, ever since as a teenager i stumbled across it on tv late one night and i was captivated!
This is from a film called Art of Violin, which is well worth getting. A fuller version of this wonderful recording can be found on the Concert Magic film that Menuhin made in the late 40s.

So beautiful. Just wish it were not a half step too high (even for A=440).

This was indeed a special favourite of him.
He had this piece above all the rest, or so
he said! Eula Beal also makes a good
performance. (Concert Magic, Antal Dorati.)
