Passing bells and sculpted angels, cold and monumental. Seem, for you, the wrong companions, you were warm and gentle. Too many years fighting back tears, why can't the past just die! Wishing you were somehow here again, knowing we must say goodbye! Try to forgive, teach me to live! Give me the strength to try! No more memories, no more silent tears! No more gazing across the wasted years! Help me say goodbye Help me say goodbye...
You were once my one companion, you were all that mattered. You were once a friend and father, then my world was shattered. Wishing you were somehow here again, wishing you were somehow near. Sometimes it seemed if I just dreamed, somehow you would be here. Wishing I could hear your voice again, knowing that I never would. Dreaming of you won't help me to do, all that you dreamed I could!
I always wished Joan Sutherland could have sang something from "Phantom" in her younger years, but seeing how that's impossible in two ways, I suppose this is the closet we can get. Still, a very lovely rendition. A little awkward on some of the lower parts, but once she gets up there, it sounds more comfortable than a lot of younger Christines.
She has such an enormous voice that it really isn't suited for this song, but I love dear Montserrat anyway. Her accented English is definitely different but she doesn't have to sound like Sarah Brightman or any of the better Christines--she's Montserrat. An interesting take on a famous song, and I like it.
Nao sabia dessa gravação com Montserrat.. puxa.. maravilhoso!! Muito bom mesmo... claro que eu prefiro a Sarah Brightman porque acho que fica perfeito na sua voz, mas ficou muito bom com Montserrat
With her maturity and artistry--even with her interesting English--she brings a new meaning to this lovely song. Forget "crossover". From her being, it is beautiful.
I think the song is much more suited to the pitch of younger voice. Just doesn't sound right somehow, and does seem exaggerated (overdone) in places - agree with RoyalSnowbird. It's a gentle, meloncholic number, so softly delivered, and I think this was missed in this version. It was belted out too much, which is where MS is really phenomenal.
A superb voice - it is unfortunate that she lays the pronunciation 'too thick' in some places - it gives this performance the air of something more suitable for a Dracula movie - sorry, I do not mince words. such great talent becomes lessened with the failure of articulating more naturally.
shes good..undeniable datz shes fantastic....but her voice is too dark for this song...itz must be a lil brighter to get dat romantic and sweet talk effect and soft feeling....her voice is too pushy already
If I evaluate this as a crossover performance, this is pretty good. The problem is that I have to evaluate it as a crossover performance ... it's not 100% natural. Still, I love Montserrat.
Brightman loose her voice now she is great 10 years ago

@ChrisStockslager Hey Chris! Yes, Lloyd Webber's POTO came out in 1986, way past Sutherland's younger years xD

Also love the richness of the "goodbyyyyyyyyyyyyyye" at the end. Few (if any) Christines ever have that kind of tone quality.
