So far there has not been a Japanese World Champion in WWE. Antonio Inoki won the WWF Championship in the late 1970's but he was stripped of the title on the controversial call. Also Yokozuna was Samoan so he was not qualified to be a Japanese WWF Champion. Also guys like Funaki, Taka, Tajiri, Akio, Sakoda, and Yoshi Tatsu never get near the main event of the WWE.
@disfiguredwreck It was Shane McMahon's idea. Unfortunately, TAKA and Funaki don't speak English very well, so Shane came up with this bad idea to give them poorly dubbed voices.
@DevilTakeMe Not so sure it was a bad idea. They speak poor English, you need to be able to talk to get over, and the idea was funny as hell. I'm sure it made TAKA and Funaki some damn good money.
@Lectricfuneral It was very funny, I agree, but at the same time, Kaientai were little more than jobbers towards the end of their run in the WWE. TAKA was one of the most talented light heavyweights of the last twenty years, and he's better remembered for being badly dubbed on live TV than for being a great wrestler. (Tajiri didn't speak much English, and he got over.)
Mick Foley said in his book, if the WWE were based on talent, TAKA would be champion.
My Friend told me it was Jerry Lawler as the voice-over....oh well...those were the good old days of WWE. Better than all the lame jokes that pathetic Cena is throwing at us every Monday night.
@ForeverYoungStr He works as a Freelancer in Japan. New Japan, Dragon Gate, etc. It'd be like someone working for WWE, then going to ROH and back whenever they felt like it.
Fuck... This was a dream match of mine. I can't believe they fucked up Michinoku and Funaki badly, here. This made me sick how they were doing this. TAKA was fucking excellent. Where is Michinoku, now? Hes probably wrestling in Japan
@TheDoom13 Both Tajiri and TAKA Michinoku have been kicking ass and having incredible matches back in Japan for years now. The best thing they ever did was leave the WWE, sadly enough. They never had a chance to show just how incredibly good they are.
Paul Heyman is easily one of the best things to ever happen to professional wrestling, and is, bar-none, the best side commentator the world has ever seen.
This should have been a main event worthy match. Both guys are legends back home and both were successful enough to start their own wrestling companies. (Taka starting Michinoku Pro, and Tajiri starting SMASH) The fact that WWE treated them both like mid-to-low carders is disgraceful.
i have a tape somewhere in my fast collection of Taijiri and Taka over in japan having a match 100 time of the caliber of this...it wasnt FMW it was what ever TAKA's promotion is
@reaper44r I almost forgot Kevin Nash/(the real) Diesel & Jeff Jarrett also made their WWE debuts during "New Generation" era. But the scrubs from that era outnumbered the superstars by way too much. WWE didn't get better until the "Attitude" era (1998-99) when guys like Kane, Edge, Christian, Kurt Angle, the Radicalz (RIP Eddie) & Y2J finally arrived. Then when WCW & ECW both folded WWE got most of the talent from those orgs as well as then newcomers like Cena, Orton, Batista & MVP came.
@reaper44r Taka was in TNA (circa 2004) but he was a cup of coffee much like the scrubs (as in Damien Demento, Man Mtn Rock, the Goon, Isaak Yankem (pre-Kane), the Fake Razor & Diesel (also pre-Kane), Kama (pre-Godfather), Abe Knuckleball Schwartz, TL Hopper, the Bleus, Mantaur, etc) WWE had during the "New Generation" era of 1993-1996 (although The Game, Stone Cold, JBL, Mick Foley, Golddust, Mark Henry & the Rock were very few bright stars then who made their WWE debuts in that time frame.)
Tajiri was trained by the man he idolizes & worships (and hopefully will be in the WWE HOF class of 2011) the Great Muta (who ironically never performed in WWE/WWF.) Where do you think he got the spewing mist? Muta taught him that.
I hope Tajiri is a part of "they" in the Impact Zone on 2/3/11. That would be so badass Tajiri teaming up w/Angle, Big Poppa Pump, Sting (maybe), Matt Morgan, Mr. Anderson (Mr. Kennedy in WWE) & newcomer Crimson to fight the Immortal faction led by Hogan, Flair, Bischoff, Jarrett, TNA champ Jeff Hardy & their band of goons. I'd like to see Tajiri come out of retirement for that event. Why Hogan et al didn't include Tajiri w/the other ECW greats for the EV2 faction is beyond me?
@TQXPreturns : He was born a tiny japanese man and not a steriod white dude named HHH? TAKA, noooo... the NJPW roster in general are all so very talented. The fans are even better.
Before people hate me for hating TAKA; I DO NOT HATE TAKA. I <3 TAKA!
I remember how good Taka was, taking nothing away from Tajiri, but in the late 90s Taka was one the best in ring performers in WWF. I can't remember but it seemed like he just vanished. That whole Ka En Tai thing was a joke though, that might've been what killed him.
@JohnLeeMD the guy was arguably one of the best wrestlers the wwe ever had, this match actually proved how he could be a total clown and still be a better wrestler than most of the roster nowadays. I think that a high flyer who used to get huge pops as a face lightheavy champ had marketability. This was just a mid card match and listen to the crowd.
@Jabbaro123 Yeah... y'know the whole "having a job" thing isn't shit unless you're top billing, right? Dude, sometimes guys are just happy being INVOLVED and getting TV-time, they don't always need belts or title reigns. Lance Storm said it best - sometimes it's best for a wrestler to not mark out for themselves or for titles and just have fun being involved at all.
