I remember seeing this on MTV Europe around about 1993 / 94. My little sister was terrified by it, she'd run out of the room whenever she heard the music at the start- she couldn't even listen to me hum it! Of course, now she loves the original, un-colourised version.
Also I've been doing a bit of browsing trying to find out exactly who G Brotmeyer was and have found a claim in an archived letter on Jonathan Rosenbaum's website that this version is in fact a satire aimed at Ted Turner.
am sure Dali would o love the "glorious technicololr" as he used to say., what he would of had a fit with was the fact that they bastardised the sequence of the film removing the most important scene and shortening all the others., just goes to show you mtv started legit like most things do *cough GOOGLE cough* and they they do evil..
"And there used to be a way to stick it to the Man. It was called rock 'n roll, but guess what, oh no, the Man ruined that, too, with a little thing called MTV!" Jack Black [School of Rock]
I worked on this video at Color Systems Technology. The sweeps of rainbow color following the bicycle, and the expanding color auras were my idea and my original innovation. This was a fun project to work on and I am happy to see it on youtube.
@ColtVonInc G Brotmeyer edited the original piece and contracted CST to do the colorization. I had just joined the Art department and this was my first assignment. Bruce Jones was the Art Director of Colorization and approved the final look with the client G Brotmeyer. I don't know all the other designers, but I know that Perry Douros, Jane Parks, and Sherry Sparks also worked on the colorization design. The actual colorization animation was done by another team of artists.
ALSO: Did you know that Salvador Dali and Luis Bunuel were ROOMMATES as college Freshmen? That is how they got to know each other. While students, Bunuel borrowed money from his relatives to make the movie. Later during the Spanish Civil WAR, Franco tried to destroy all the prints of the movie and Bunuel smuggled the Master out of the country. Bunuel would have been executed if he was caught. "For over fifty years the movie incited riots and controversy whenever it was shown."
@ColtVonInc To answer the question directly: G Brotmeyer made the editing decisions and removed that shot. I do not know why.
Also, I gave the people the bright colored hair, which was way more radical in 1987 than today. I made the room changing color, which was actually REALLY difficult, because it changed all the other colors.
Perry Douros worked on the park scene. Jane Parks worked on the man on the bicycle and the illustrations in the book.
Did MTV really do this? Because if true, it makes me a saaaaad panda.
I appreciate the idea behind it- introducing new people to Buñuel and Un Chien Andalou, but they could've just, you know, left it the hell alone and showed it as is.
they cut out the part where the eyeball is sliced.

creepiest short film ever made no doubt . it makes no sense at all sometimes but the way it was made is artistic in so many ways .
michaelforthriller 1 month ago
@michaelforthriller The whole film was deliberately made to make no sense at all. But i wish someone would make a modern remake.

G.Brotmeyer replaced Fin at the end of this shortened/colorized version
with Finland. It ends too abruptly here to see that witticism.

The colorized version isn't as bad as people are commenting. It adds a new experimental touch to the already experimental flick.

@SREproducciones the problem is not the color. the problem is that it was cut form 16 minutes to 1
