With a manual transmission car circa 1985 and older, you DID NOT HAVE TO PRESS THE CLUTCH down in order to start the car. As long as the transmission was in neutral you could crank over the engine in order to start it without using the clutch. Earth to JBof, this vid is intended to be a tease. Of course once the engine is flooded you wouldn't continue to pump the gas pedal as she's doing as odds are the car would never start. But, obviously I doubt this girl is even 16 years old and didn't have her driver's license yet when this was filmed over 4 years ago. Whoever asked her to model simply told her to crank the engine and pump away barefoot. Notice how several times she doesn't even turn the key in the ignition correctly.

Most of the manual cars I have started make no difference whether the clutch is depressed or not, as long as the gearbox is in neutral. But yeah, once the engine is flooded, it's choke in, gas slowly to the floor and hold it there, then hit the starter till it fires.

Actually you're quite wrong. You must have not been around prior to the early 90's. Manual shift cars prior to that did NOT have the mechanism absolutely requiring you to push in the clutch as you turned the key in the ignition. My first car was an 80 Rabbit. As long as the transmission was in neutral the car could be started without the clutch depressed. In this vid the girl has obviously flooded out the carb. She's teasing by purposely pumping the gas too much!
