It was communism's paradise, everyone enjoyed a standard of living well above the standard of living compared to the mainland. Reality became apparent when the USSR collapsed and the money flowing in stopped. Subsidised living can work if the community can increase its productivity or efficiency to a point where it can sustain itself. This community was a massive money pit for the sake of a political agenda.
how dare man leave this shit just astanding after taking its resources ? Norway needs to jail some mining assholes who did this and the government need to go to jail for letting this happen
@sweetypie000 I heard the Russians are there restoring the town now for tourism, though I think making this town into a tourism place is bad too. Leave nature be on the places it still can be! Longyearbayen is enough on Spitsbergen haha
my god, no wonder these super powers have done nothing to stop global warming when they have known the retreating ice will be a scramble for the resources.
Hillary Clinton is one of the guilty and she is, like all these vile beings, souless.
imagine yourself walking there alone holy shit!!

I was there in summer 1995, when it was still in service. And I was back in 1999 and 2003, when it was closed.
I liked Pyramiden much more than Barentsburg.
