  • Currently, there is another very practical reason why to choose the D5100 over the D7000: availability. Apparently, flooding at the Nikon plants in Thailand have caused that at least both in Europe and East Asia new D7000s are hard to come by. Even if you get lucky and can find one, the price will be higher than a year ago. D7000 is surely better, but D5100 is identical where it really counts - the sensor.

  • Bullcookies. The D7000 is a better camera.

  • The D5100 is a nice ENTRY level camera. The D7000 is a MID level camera...

    And it's Nee-kon, not knigh-kon..

  • @Obeijin d700 is also amateur enry camera man so there is no reason to buy smthng better if u cant take pro photos. lol

  • @SAINT8889 I can take pro level photos with my Nikon P90 ! But you're right. Why not the D3100 ?

  • d7000 is the best crop sensor camera

  • If you're so much into video maybe you should consider investing in a video camera.

  • One word... clueless. It describes you perfectly.

When I think of a Nikon D7000, I think of a still image camera. I don't give a f*** how many fps its video mode have. I doubt I will use it often. And that screen... it just means that most of the buttons that should be there (around the screen) had to be moved elswhere on less appropriate spots - no thanks. And those effects and bad quality HDR... LOL, who cares about them... really. Nothing that I can't do on the D7000 or in the Photoshop.

  • wow, so many idiots on youtube. He's giving reasons that may make you want to get the D5100 over the D7000, he's not saying the D5100 is BETTER. If the D5100 suits your needs as an amateur then get that. If you need the extra pro-like features of the D7000, get that. My guess is that most of the people bitching about this video are just hobbyists who don't really know what they need.

  • Two words "Fuck" "off". You Know nothing, NOTHING about photography

  • @BASHA1612 Yeah, and you're a pro with your D3100. :-/

  • You scare me.

  • This guy must be on some kind of powerful medication. Wacky :o)

  • Love My D7K :)

  • i wish people would stop saying the D5100 is 1080p

its max is only 1080i and nowhere in the manual does it say 1080p and on the camera 1080i is the highest

  • i can't tell if he's being sarcastic or not...

  • The D7000 has 1080p too, the tilty-swively screen isn't necessary, HDR is crap and the D7000 still has bracketing, night vision? Are you fucking kidding? You know nothing about cameras. Does it have a weather proof magnesium alloy body? Does it have two SD card slots? Does it have a top LCD screen? Does it have an AF motor? Does it have 39 AF points? Does it have two control dials? It doesn't have any of that! Also, the D7000 doesn't have a ton of effects for kids. The D7000 is a serious DSLR.

  • @Synnergy08 I agree with you completely, but I would argue that the D5100 is MUCH better for beginners.

  • @Lazyman666rocks For beginners yes. Beginners probably don't need a camera like the D7000, but overall the capabilities of the D7000 are better.

  • @Synnergy08 Haha wow, you must be serious about cameras. Just chilllllll, it's a Camera, so what if it has effects? That's a plus. The D7000 is a good camera, but the D5100 can work about the same, let me repeat before you freak out, ABOUT the same, as a D7000 for less the amount of money.

  • @Emahnii I didn't freak out. I just don't get why this guy makes a video giving you reasons why the other camera's better, when the reasons don't actually make any sense. He's supposed to compare the two cameras in a way that actually shows which one's better in general. Otherwise the D5100 is better for beginners, but not for a more serious photographer.

  • @Synnergy08 I'd have to admit, you are somewhat correct, but c'mon.. let's not forgot these are just simply camera's, people have different taste.

  • @Emahnii Of course people have different taste, but this is more of a comparison. If the point was that people have different taste they'd probably be choosing between Nikon and Canon, a DSLR and mirrorless, full-frame and crop-sensor, etc. Taste just determines what you personally prefer, not what's actually better.

  • @Synnergy08 I think the only reason to buy D5100 is that D7000 is little costlier and for beginners like me its price is an overkill. Hence I bought D5100.

Although I did go for D5100 and not for any other cheaper camera because of the tilty-swively screen because I want to maybe get good at shooting abstract-ish work, it comes in handy at time. Now I can just jump to Full frame DSLR on my next purchase once I feel I am good enough.

  • @devilzworkshop That's the great thing about DSLRs, if you need something better, you can just sell the older one and get a better one. For example if you had to compare the D3s to a D3100, the D3s would be better, but there's no point in getting it if you're a beginner, because it's far too advanced.

  • @Synnergy08 Yeah, resale value is pretty good. And LOL, my only gripe with D5100 is that it isn't weather proof like D7000 but you can't always have it all when you are on budget :P

  • @devilzworkshop Another major flaw of the D5100 is that it has no internal focusing motor. Yeah, you can't have everything you'd like on a budget, but you can plan ahead and think through what you will like later, possibly wait a little longer if you can to increase the budget.

  • @Synnergy08 I have waited for quite a long time as I had to purchase other gadgets that I use for work. And I already did overstep my budget. I was initially considering D3100 or 550D but I have always liked Nikon ( I have had used DSLRs previously, always used to borrow from my friends to check them out) so I got D5100, I did consider D7000 but then i decided to not go for it and upgrade later if required. D5100 costs somewhere around $900 over here and D7000 is $1400.

  • @Synnergy08 I just think that D7000 isnt even THAT great that it deserves to cost almost twice. Because performance wise both sensors are similar.

  • @Synnergy08 Obviously D5100 isnt anything compared to D3s but it's atleast something that wont stop being useful once I pass that beginner phase, if I ever :P

  • @devilzworkshop The D3s won't stop being useful either, it's just useless until you get to that level of experience and when you have the need to use a camera like that. If you really want it, if you like photography and you feel like it's going to stay fun for a longer period of time, then I don't see a reason why you couldn't get there.

  • @Synnergy08 It's going to stay fun forever for me, it's not a new found interest but been there since a long long time. But I do have lots of interests and hobbies and do try to maintain a balance between learning them, then there is work. Also, I see photography as art, even with enough practice one can only get as good as an artist he/she is. I can def. improve on by skills but only time will tell if I do have sufficient talent to pull it off, :)

  • @devilzworkshop Yeah, that's a major problem... time. But photography is great in lots of situations, you can just take your camera with you when you go somewhere and you never know what may happen, but it's sometimes a pity not to have your camera. It's all about the moments, either if it's just to make them permanent or make something just stunningly beautiful.

  • @Synnergy08 So i'd say that reasons to consider D5100 are price and the screen and it is def. a best DSLR a beginner could get. D7000 is just a bit too costly for those who just getting started. But If I am not wrong then the processing capabilities of both are same so it just really is a great option, or I hope it is :P

  • @devilzworkshop Well magnesium is more expensive than plastic. :P

  • @Synnergy08 wow.you're a foul creature.

  • I own D5100, but I prefer Sony A580 which has same price, same sensor but faster and more functions. See the comparison here

  • Are you on meth?

  • where can i buy online the d5100 cheap and SAFE ??

  • Comment removed

  • @krlajoo cheapest i found it ($580.00 body only) ...Sent you the link threw youtube quick chat...press tab + C, if it dont open up the window just press ALT + F4 while in your inbox.

  • cant you just stand up straight?

  • This guy is on crack look at him he can't stay still...piss poor reviews

  • making adj. without actually having the cameras is just pointless.

  • You keep telling yourself that the D5100 is better than the D7000...Tell yourself it enough times and you will start to kid YOURSELF... That it is a better camera.

Does the D5100 have a weatherproof body...mmmmm NO

Does the D5100 have a built in motor to use NON motorised lens to autofocus...mmmm NO

Does the D5100 have a shoot rate of 6 FPS....mmmmmm NO

  • @71shoelover

i think d5100 is more of a bang for the buck camera than d7000. d7000 is for more experienced photographers while the d5100 is more for the starters. so if you are watching this and you are planning on buying a camera and have little to no idea of what would you buy, i think this video is ok.

  • @Sensui01 true the d5100 is a fine camera (Nikon don't make any rubbish DSLR camera's) The d5100 is similar to the Canon 600d ..As you said a "More bangs for your buck's camera"

  • If I am really into movies I buy a Canon EOS600D

  • U can get 'HDR' with ANY still or video camera just by shooting @ a lower exposure & then using an 'S' shaped brightness curve in editing. I prefer 1 that is like a 'double spoon' shape, so the mids R all accurate. This keeps all the highlights & lows, but enhances the detail so nothing is washed out or 2 shadowy =)

  • Sorry for panicing. Just found out that PAL has the maximum of 25fps. I live in europe so i must use PAL and be happy with my 25fps :D

  • PLEASE READ! My D5100 has maximum of 25fps in all resolutions, wheres my 30fps??

  • Why the shutter speed of your eye lid so slow?! :P

  • Don't understand this video just go buy a D7000 you will outgrow the D5100 very quickly trust me :)

  • i guess the pro camera reviewers miss the point of entry level consumer dslr

  • Yet another reason is weight. The D7000 is a lot heavier. I had a D5000 and sold it to buy the D7000. Then the 5100 came out. Timing is everything, but then again the weight of the D7000 helps stabilize it for shooting and it feels more like a "pro" camera.

  • Very cool video!

I have a question about the auto mode. is it always on? or can you turn it off as well? because with moving objects the auto mode creates this "pumping-effect", does'nt it? so is it possible to film without the auto focus mode? thanks for your help, i am about to buy one, but filming is very interesting for me, so i have to know this first. thank you!

  • Hey Matt. Thx for another pretty informative video. I ll ask u a big question since im confused about what camera to buy. I found a job as a photographer for various ocasions from sports to children parties. And i want to buy a nikon camera since the olympus i got makes my life kinda hard. I was thinking about d7000 but with a couple of lenses and a flash unit price goes high... Should i look at d5100? Or d90??? (AF is what troubles me most) Thanks in advance. Keep on the good work.

  • agreed!

  • is the 5100 good for a beginner?

  • dude is it ok to buy a nikon D5100 made in thailand unit?why..?

  • MATT please tell me if the d5100 is better than canon 600 d for pictures?

is a big diference in picture quality or is quai the same?

The video seems to be better for the canon is true ?

thank you, you are on of the best on you tube revs

  • @junyeumah lol! your right! it sucks when you have to pay even $1,000 for a lens with af motor, while in the D7000 you don't have to worry for that!

  • 55 people bought the d7000 just before the launch of the d 5100. hahhaa u got ripped.

  • buying the D5100 tomorrow! sweet!

  • I have a d90...its video kind of bites...I do have a lot of nikon glass....should I buy a d5100 body for the video or spend that money on a 800 buck camcorder?..thanks

  • @mainemonty to come close to video quality of d5100 you need at least a 2000 bucks camcorder because the sensor is 4 time bigger and the lens much better in a dslr .

  • Comment removed

  • So, reason #1 is 1080 30p if "you're really into movies." Well, video is 30p. Movies are 24p. So call it video. And on that note, why all the emphasis on video, anyway? These are STILL cameras first. As video cameras, they offer shallow depth of field compared to conventional pro camcorders. Not only that, they have shallow depth of field. Did I mention DOF? It's soooooo shallow and cinematic, yo. Now, take that away, what you have is a freaking joke of a video camera. Enough!

  • you forgot that the D7000 has a built in motor ;)

  • Hey guys, just got my d5100 today. Yeahh!!

The LCD screen is sooo sweet, it's as new, got it from a friend who was a Canon guy for $600!! The sad thing is I have to get rid of my D5000 now :( there's been numerous times where I had a chance to upgrade to the D90 but one thing that gave me 2nd thought was that the screen is fixed!! Once you used the articulated screen you just go " why won't all cameras come with one?!!" it makes video and photo composition so much more fun!! I'm glad I waited.

  • how about comparing it to canon 60d? which one is more ok? thank you

  • There are a few comments below going ape shit at Matt for this review. Calm down.

No where in the review does he tell you that the D5100 is better then the D7000.

He simply states some features which the D7000 does not, and this MAY be a reason while the 5100 may appeal to buyers.

  • Im not agreeing to this review. D7000 has the best body!!

  • im not a nikon fan, sorry, but he must be mad!!! the d7000 is much better, its weatherproof for god sake!!!

  • Hello, I'm currently using Canon t1i which was my very first dslr camera and i've had it for about two years now...and I'm looking to do an upgrade to the nikon D7000.

Do you think this is a reasonable upgrade?

And are there any places that you can recommend for selling my Canon t1i??

    Thanks!!

  • Comment removed

  • @junyeumah oh then which kind needs the motor?

  • @junyeumah AF-s lenses don't need a motor but are AF-g lenses better than AF-s?

  • Try again..... Cannot wait to see what replaces the d300s....

  • @Umkomaas2010 - ya, I'm pumped to see the Nikon D400 official specs!

  • Can't wait to see what the d300s replacemen

  • why d hell is your body tilted to one side all the while and whats with all those weird eye expressions? rest aside, decent review.

  • @rockboy9695 - LOL... everyone's a critic. :-)

  • This might as well be "D5100 over D3s, D3x, D700, D300s, 1Ds4, 1D3, 5D2, 7D, K5, etc. etc" ... they dont compete with each other.

  • @JogBird - No, but people want to figure out where in the line-up is right for them.

  • Think I'll wait for the D7000s :-)

  • 4?

  • Matt shouldn't you wait until you have tested the 5100 before recommending it over another model?

  • @Umkomaas2010 - I'm not making recommendations of one camera over another so much as giving you reasons why you would want one camera in lieu of another depending on what your shooting needs are.

  • @Umkomaas2010 Yeah he is just listing reasons but I agree with you that the camera should be tested first because the abilities you list over the d7000 or another camera period might not be as good as they're advertised or speculated to be...I am pissed the d5100 has better video ability though but im still going with the d7000

  • The d7000 has more focus points.

I still feel Nikon cheated me.I want 30 fps and better contumacious burst buffer at full resolution. :D

  • 3. Kinda neat? If you want HDR, you make it yourself, no in camera editor is sufficient to beat post processing. 4. You don't know if it is going to be a lot better than the D7000. Night Vision? What are you? Specops? and 5. 400USD cheaper? Of course it is, it is a plastic body, a play thing camera with gimmicks.. So only the 1080p/30fps and the veriangle screen are legit. Why don't you compare the D5100 with the 60D? Those seem to be in the same price range..

  • another low end camera from Nikon. I wants the D800 already

  • @appacana - Me too! I think we'll be waiting until at least summer though. :-(

  • Nikon D7000 for teh lulz.

  • How about the durability..?

  • @dekkieboy - I've never had a problem with durability on any of the Nikon DSLR bodies.

  • jees what the you gonna do when all the new bodies come out you always go for the new one all the time your d7k will be binned soon as the d4 or whatever else comes out

  • @ThePoacher1969 - No, I think my D7000 will be around for a while. I'm getting quite a collection. Keeps the wife irritated. :-)

  • na, 30fps, non realistic HDR stuff and rotating screen over the body and features of the D7000, doesn't make sense to me.

  • HDR function ? I've never seen a good HDR-pic. It's fake, unnatural, unreal.

  • @piggystardust - I admit I don't like a lot of them. I actually like the REALLY hyper-real ones, cause at least it's an artistic look that isn't trying to look natural.

  • Film makers do not want 30 frames a second. What they want is 60 frames and 50 frames.

I have no idea why Nikon won't add 60 and 50 frames to video mode?

I really do not see a clear winner when it comes to video. Canon better frame rates but Nikon rules in low light.

  • @mp4podcastDOTcom - I think it's a limitation on the tech side to do with processor speed, memory, and info through-put.

  • I love it, the D5100 isn't even out yet and there's a reason to by over video LOL.

Every single reason quoted is one that made me glad I didn't splash out on the D700.

The ONLY thing I would miss that the D7000 has is the dual SD Card slots, there are other small things that the D7000 wins over but for me its now the D5100 all the way.

Can't wait until UK launch day!

  • @rawdk - Oh don't get me wrong... I wouldn't choose the D5100 over the D7000. It'll make a nice combo though. :-)

  • @ArtoftheImage Your story sure changed on this.

  • @ArtoftheImage wait you wouldnt choose the 5100 over the 7000 but you just made a video about why to buy the 5100 over the 7000? anyway i heard the video on the 7000 isnt as good as the d3100 that true?

  • @andrademeza - No, the D3100 video has a lesser codec than the D7000. The D7000 is MUCH better than the D3100 for video.

  • @ArtoftheImage yeah, h264 on a dslr sensor is the bomb, especially when you shoot with a wide angle and watch every horizontal line turn into a stairway to hell.

  • aw! come on man, i know i said i kinda miss the heavenly white bg videos, but not this sappy green room trick. hahaha.

I was kinda worried about the title of this vid since i just got my d7000 a couple days ago, but after watching it, none of the reasons really matter to me. so i'm still safe. cool video as always!

  • @starboymachine - I try to mix it up. I have Adobe Premiere Pro which is supposed to do green screen better... just haven't had the time to learn it yet. Vegas isn't the best for green screen, especially when you're sub'ing in a white background.

    Thanks!

  • @ArtoftheImage I dont know, I think youre doing a good job with the screen...

  • The D90 is the best deal one can get for a DSLR today...better then the D3100/5100

  • @Forkroute - The D90 is a great DSLR. Still have mine in my bag.

  • @Forkroute should I get a used D90? Is it wise to buy used gear? Looking for a first DSLR.

  • @gourdbox For the price today I would save some extra money and get a new D90 (with lenses: tamron 17-50/2.8 + optional 35mm/1.8 = my kit if I were starting off now)...If you're into stills (which I'm into). If you're still planing on used, check all the important aspects, so you won't buy a lemon.

  • @Forkroute pretty good, but lacks some important features for me that the 5100 brings.

  • @Forkroute Nope...it DEPENDS on what you want in the camera...for me, even d5000 i better than d90.

D90 is pretty awesome of course ! I love it.

But i'm just saying....it depends on what you are looking for in a camera.

  • @eminRoblack Like what? D5000>D90, sounds like a joke. Name one feature.

  • @Forkroute FLIPITY ! :) As i said, camera is not perfect if it has latest technology. It depends what you do with it. I LOVE taking videos and sometimes i want some nice looking photos. So, for me even the D5000 it better than d90.

And believe me, that flip screen is a LIFE-SAVER when it comes to videos. If you dont have external HDMI monitor, you're stuck in SOME situations.....thats why i am sellin' my D3100 and getting D5100.

Again, D90 AWESOME, but D5100 is AWESOMEer FOR MY NEEDS XD

  • @Forkroute D90 is ancient... The sensor on the d5100 is far superior.

  • @Forkroute over d5100 of course not, 5100 ....much better

  • @Forkroute still love mine!

  • Well yeah... its more the video features in this cam then D7000. HDR -well... the handwork is always better then depending on a system. But if your getting all this for less i guess it is a good reason.

  • Im extremely excited about the in-camera HDR, saves a bunch of time

  • @AsharpIsBack - It'll be interesting to see how good it is!
