@35sixer It doesn't matter if Schumy has 7 titles or 91 wins. @SuperF13 How the Fuck can you call this guy "the best" Stefan Bellof was, how you say borderline shit in F1 in the two seasons of F1 he never landed a podium, in that time Senna already racked up 8 podiums and 2 wins. in 10 years of racing in F1 Senna had 3 DSQ (Disqualifications) Bellof on the otherhand racked a nice 11 and all in the 84 season. PLEASE COME BACK ON HERE AND POST ONCE YOU'VE GOT BELLOF'S SHIT OUT OF YOUR EYES.
@SuperF13 Race was interrupted due to weather. Weather was better than it was before Senna reached 2nd position. This race is well know as an example of how F1 can be political at sometimes.
It is a big shame they couldnt have brought the red flag out 1 lap later, then the right man would have won this race, because the positions would have been after Senna passed Prost. A rookie in his first season who outdrove the whole field in a Toleman on an extremely wet Monaco track deserves to have won. At the time when the race was stopped Senna was catching Prost at a rate of around 4 SECONDS a lap. This was just the beginning for greatest F1 driver of all time.
This could be one of the most important proof of how just how good Senna could be. This is like a modern F1 driver capturing podium on pure pace on an HRT in rain. Incredible !!!
Sleep tight Senna we will never forget the greatest driver inhistory <3 The guy who roared throught the streets of monaco one handed with 1500hp behind him absolutely incredible <3
this race proved that Stefan Bellof was a much better driver than Senna.
Bellof had the worse car in the grid, but was faster than anyone else. If they had not stopped the race Bellof would have been the first in the finish line.
After this race Ferrari did a contract to the best driver here, Stefan Bellof.
Bellof the real rain master!!!
RIP BELLOF, THE TRUE MAGIC AND BEST DRIVER IN 80´S
@hunt2727 RIP Bellof. A very tallend driver, no doubt. Would be a really interesting race. But I can't agree about the best in 80's, it was only one race. And Senna was a master about defensive driving techniques.
senna fans are the worst. "if this happened senna woulda won the race" and "if that happened senna coulda won the title". just a bunch of woulda coulda. if you wanna admire him do it for something he actually did and not what he couldve done.
why do so many people say senna passed prost in this race. clearly prost car was damn near stopped when senna came zipping by. truth is that if the 32nd lap counted prost wouldnt have slowed down and senna wouldve remained several seconds behind.
@didickcheeseburger Who cares dude? Isn't it proof enought that in his first GP he came from 13th place to 2nd place with a shitty car in raining conditions? Every F1 true fan agrees that Senna is a god. Even Prost respected him. Show some more respect, this guys was awesome, and very humble, not like Schumi, selfish.
Senna always cared about other racers safe, he was an awesome guy. Show some respect.
@Darthwizard i do like senna. hes one of the all time greats. i just dont exaggerate the truths to make senna seem like he did greater things than he really did. and this wasnt sennas first race. it was his first season and he took part in every race that season. see what i mean about the exaggerations?
@Abujamra2 Actually, that race is a great history. First of all, the race you mean is the 1988 GP. On qualifying, Senna was about 1.5s faster than Prost and 2.7s faster than the third driver. On the race, Prost was overtaken by Berger, and began to set a fast lap, with an inmediate response from Senna. They began to trade fast laps, and Dennis told Senna to slow down, making Senna lost concentration. Probably if Dennis wouldnt' ask Senna to slow Down, he should won the race.
@themagicayrtonsenna with all love, that wasn't wrong from Dennis, simply Ayrton made a heavy mistake. I say this as the greatest Senna fan. But after all, as Senna admitted later on, that was the most important race for him, not a race to throw away and forget. that experience made of him a much better driver, not in terms of speed, but mental side. his mind power grew. he lost a race, but from than on he was even stronger. look what he did in Suzuka same year in a nearly desperate situation.
@themagicayrtonsenna Even if it were completely Ayrton's fault it would be stupid for anyone to say that made him any less of a great driver imo.
It's amazing how few crashed he had really with how much he pushed past what most people thought was the limit for the cars... with his driving if he made one tiny mistake it would be a crash, but it didn't happen very often.
before i go on senna IS the greatest, but if my memory serves me right ,wasnt senna being caught also,by (i think) belof? and if the race had gone full distance, would belof have caught/passed senna?????? any 1?
Although I am a McLaren fan, mostly thanks to Senna and his 6 magic seasons with them, I think it's a shame Senna didn't win a drivers' title with Lotus, especially since he was the best Lotus driver ever alongside Jim Clark.
Reliability robbed Senna of the 1985 world title for Lotus. He did lead more laps than anybody that year.
With a better engine in the McLaren 1993, Senna would have been champion that year too. His win in Donington is among the top 3 best wins ever.
@McLarenMercedes After the 1978 season, and the latter death of Champman, Lotus never went back to the fight for titles. And yes, the 93' MacLaren was far more competitive then 92, but no more Honda provided engines that season.
Absolutely true comments. Its the owner with the deepest purse that wins the championship today. What a shame this sporting spectacle and show of talent has been turned into. Simply bow to the master drivers of those days; sheer dedication guts and will to succeed. There should be another F1 calendar to rival this shame. Newer race venues are opening up and people are really taking to this sport in a big way. Its time to say goodbye to Ecclestones', Briatores' & Moselyes. Money should not rule.
Back in 97 Villienuve said that all the rule changes for 98 would destroy the sport and look over a decade where we are. He said, more danger more sport. Less danger, more boreness. He was so right. Fantastic video by the way :)
I'm Brazilian. I was just 11 yrs old, but I DO, yes I DO remember this race! It was beautiful, and incredibly sad when Senna started to celebrate his 1st victory, but FIA decided to claim Alan Prost as the winner. But what the f*ck: this day, a genius was born. Senna lives forever.
In Youtube exist this race in 10 pieces. Senna previously won the Mercedes Benz 190C race of Champions against this champions, in May 84, and old champions in rain. All with identical car. Lauda was 2nd. in these race. Prost did the pole and Senna was 2nd faster. The next race was Monaco en F1 and Senna show to the whole world his genius: With this piece of crap of car, he did this miracle. He earn the fastest lap in these race. This was a classic epic race for him. For this and more the best
@Chunkychucky : he was not disqualified for the 1984 Monaco race itself, but the Tyrrell Team was excluded later that year for the entrire season due to tricking with underweight cars.
I remember watching thias race. Senna was gaining fast on Prost, but Bellof was gaining on both of them, in an inferior car. Had Bellof not died in 1985, Senna would have had a worthy counterpart.
we are viewing differnt eras. in 80s you could see very wide spread performances. While now engines performance is within 20-30 hp, then you could see enormous diffs. remember Bellof was driving an old Cosworth aspirated with not more than 540 hp, Sennas Hart Turbo about 640 hp, the TAG Turbo of McLaren arrived at about 750 hp and the BMW Turbo at about 800 hp! all this is very relevant. in wet conditions engine power tends to be less important and driver abilities come out. wonderful Senna!
That race was stopped because Prost was French, and the organisers had agreed to stop the race to allow the fellow Frog to win the race. However it serves Prost right as he lost the championship that year narrowly!
Yes, had he finished 2nd in the race and the full points would have been awarded he would have gotten 6 points instead of the 4,5 for winning the stopped race. Then he would have won the title by 1 point from Lauda in 1984.
Senna's first win would have come here instead of in Portugal 1985.
Don't count Bellof in the Tyrrell, they lost all their points and positions after it was found they were cheating and underweight all season.
In that era, drivers won championships, now, the car is the one which wins the championship, Button is the best example. In Monaco 1984 Senna drove a really bad car, and was able to get a second place, meanwhile, Button, with the best car, reduced notably his performance in half-season while his mate was able to win races, remember his last win was on Turkey GP. That's real mediocrity...
@Saki2407 Jacky Ickx was the race control chief on that race, at the same time he was working for Porsche, who supplied engines for McLaren's of the era. Some say that he was forced to stop the race before Senna could reach and overtake Prost, since it will be a shame for Porsche and McLaren to lost with a Toleman...
Stuff like that happens in the sport all the time.In 1982 when Rosberg won in Dijon, Prost had been leading most of the race, when Rosberg was catching him, One of Williams personel discovered that the French flagman wanted to flag Prost as winner even if there still was 2 laps to go. Rosberg DID overtake, and led the final two laps to win his first race. (he did win the 1978 BRDC in Silverstone too, against the elite who all spun off in the rain).
Ironically it also ruined Prost's 1984 title. The race was stopped and only half points were awarded. Had the race gone on, Senna would have won and Prost would have been 2nd. If Bellof caught and overtook him doesn't matter since all the Tyrrell points and positions were removed in 1984, since they were cheating with underweight cars. Prost would have got 6 points for 2nd, instead of 4,5 for a half-race win. As it were, he lost the title with half a point to Lauda. He'd win with 1 pt
This is nothing new. Phil Hill was a pretty mediocre driver but he was champion in 1961. Why? Because the Ferrari had a way more powerful engine than all the other teams, and the car itself was really good too. When his main rival for the title, his team mate Von Trips, died in Monza, he got the title pretty much for free.
Well, Button did finish 3rd in 2004 against totally superior Ferraris, and he did lead the 2010 title race for a couple of races. Not bad at all.
@McLarenMercedes Come on, we all know Ferrari's car in 2004 was by far the best, perhaps the most dominant car of the last years, and we all know McLaren and Williams were at their worst season in years(Montoya, the best of those teams, was 5th, the worst, Coulthart finished 10th).
A similar situation happened with Mario Andretti and the death of Ronnie Peterson: the last one died, so the american won his only championship.
According to people who knew Peterson, he was ordered by Colin Chapman (Lotus founder and team boss) not to race Andretti, and if they were leading a compfortable 1-2, then Peterson was not allowed to overtake him. Some say Peterson easily followed Andretti in the races, and probably could have overtaken him
Ford wanted an American champion, so Andretti got better treatment by Lotus.Chapman had promised Peterson no team-orders for 1979.Some say he would sign McLaren in '79
Never saw Peterson race, except for those clips I've seen on him here. But yes, when it came to raw pace Peterson was the better driver. Some said Andretti had better technical knowledge and how to set the car up and develop it (not that it was needed on the dominant Lotus 79),whereas Peterson was merely lightning fast in any car. Colin Chapman once saw him driving some heavy Ford and keeping up with a lightweight sportscar on a really twisty road.Nobody knew how he did it
The Brawn started the season with the best car, but it quickly became apparent the Red Bull was better on many tracks. Witness how Mark Webber, who never had won a single race in a record 130 starts before winning his first. He won another that year. Vettel won 4 races in 2009.
Button chose to play it safely, instead of risking it. In the end it paid off. He probably remembered how Lewis Hamilton screwed up his 2007 title after leading almost the entire season. China 2007
@McLarenMercedes Button is a high experienced driver, but no way can be considered a espectacular, risky driver, like Hamilton or Vettel, which are also faster drivers(Hamilton proved that in 2010), but both can be considered immature and nervous drivers. I think Button won because he only has to be consistent, trying not to make mistakes, but was in front for the first races thanks to a really faster car. I'd loved to see a fast driver like Hamilton or Vettel in the 2009 Brawn GP1...
Well, I never considered Button a spectacular driver, merely underrated. Back in 2004 I defended him and said that if he ever got to sit in a good car he would be champion. In 2009 I was proven right. Button goes easy on the tires.
Vettel is very fast, but he nearly lost his 2010 title to Alonso, who was on his usual cruise-and-inherit wins 3 times that season, due to Vettel's risky nature. Vettel should have won the 2010 title easily, ok it wasn't always his fault.
Prost a 4 time champion(he wasn't in 1984 but later became) sitting in the best car with the best engine in 1984, the dominant McLaren MP4/2 Tag Porsche
Lauda a 3 time champion sitting in the very car that brought him his 3'rd title in 1984
Both got beaten by a rookie in his first season driving a car that was nowhere near the McLaren's level of refinement and power..
Magic. Senna deserved to win
Bellof's car was at leat 100 kilos underweight and he had a non-turbo car=easier in rain
things were much better in the F1 when they had real drivers and no technology running the cars, no wonder MOTOGP is so competitive... its the driver that drives the vehicle, not some computer
@SteveSpicerPortsmuth well some of these "stupid" rules are for safety to help prevent what happened to Senna happening again. I miss F1 from the old days but a lot of it is just to make racing a lot safer. RIP Ayrton Senna
The Tolman that Senna was driving was nick named, The General Belgrano by the teams mechanics because the handling was so bad. Senna did miracles in it. This is when the team realised he was a genius.
I wish he had won with the Toleman in Monaco that year. But his first win in dominant style in Estoril in pouring rain in 1985 was not to shabby either....
ah the 80s the most bare-knuckle era or motorsport where man, machine, and technology climaxed, before regulation stepped in and said we ll have none of that 60s maybe classic but 80s is life or death in the most powerful and horrific sorta way
Thanks Themagicayrtonsenna for put this video, showing who realy was the best driver of all times, THE GREAT AYRTON SENNA, THE RAIN MASTER, THE KING OF MONACO, THE MAGIC, ETC, at the moment to speak about Senna words are useless, words can't describe his genious and talent.
The best, dazzling in Monaco, Ayrton Senna remains still aujourd' today the pilot always also to appreciate, not a day without l' one diffuses a new creation, never a pilot n' will have more diffusion and of charisma, " Magic Senna" Forever

Incredible !!!

this race proved that Stefan Bellof was a much better driver than Senna.
Bellof had the worse car in the grid, but was faster than anyone else. If they had not stopped the race Bellof would have been the first in the finish line.
After this race Ferrari did a contract to the best driver here, Stefan Bellof.
Bellof the real rain master!!!
RIP BELLOF, THE TRUE MAGIC AND BEST DRIVER IN 80´S
hunt2727 10 months ago
@hunt2727 RIP Bellof. A very tallend driver, no doubt. Would be a really interesting race. But I can't agree about the best in 80's, it was only one race. And Senna was a master about defensive driving techniques.

senna fans are the worst. "if this happened senna woulda won the race" and "if that happened senna coulda won the title". just a bunch of woulda coulda. if you wanna admire him do it for something he actually did and not what he couldve done.
why do so many people say senna passed prost in this race. clearly prost car was damn near stopped when senna came zipping by. truth is that if the 32nd lap counted prost wouldnt have slowed down and senna wouldve remained several seconds behind.
didickcheeseburger 1 year ago
@didickcheeseburger Who cares dude? Isn't it proof enought that in his first GP he came from 13th place to 2nd place with a shitty car in raining conditions? Every F1 true fan agrees that Senna is a god. Even Prost respected him. Show some more respect, this guys was awesome, and very humble, not like Schumi, selfish.
Senna always cared about other racers safe, he was an awesome guy. Show some respect.
Darthwizard 1 year ago
@Darthwizard i do like senna. hes one of the all time greats. i just dont exaggerate the truths to make senna seem like he did greater things than he really did. and this wasnt sennas first race. it was his first season and he took part in every race that season. see what i mean about the exaggerations?

Show he crashing in the tunnel's entrance corner (1989?) to enforce your thesys, my grand brown nose.
Abujamra2 1 year ago
@Abujamra2 Actually, that race is a great history. First of all, the race you mean is the 1988 GP. On qualifying, Senna was about 1.5s faster than Prost and 2.7s faster than the third driver. On the race, Prost was overtaken by Berger, and began to set a fast lap, with an inmediate response from Senna. They began to trade fast laps, and Dennis told Senna to slow down, making Senna lost concentration. Probably if Dennis wouldnt' ask Senna to slow Down, he should won the race.
themagicayrtonsenna 1 year ago 7
@themagicayrtonsenna with all love, that wasn't wrong from Dennis, simply Ayrton made a heavy mistake. I say this as the greatest Senna fan. But after all, as Senna admitted later on, that was the most important race for him, not a race to throw away and forget. that experience made of him a much better driver, not in terms of speed, but mental side. his mind power grew. he lost a race, but from than on he was even stronger. look what he did in Suzuka same year in a nearly desperate situation.
sargatanas88 1 year ago
@themagicayrtonsenna Even if it were completely Ayrton's fault it would be stupid for anyone to say that made him any less of a great driver imo.
It's amazing how few crashed he had really with how much he pushed past what most people thought was the limit for the cars... with his driving if he made one tiny mistake it would be a crash, but it didn't happen very often.

McLarenMercedes 1 year ago 2
@McLarenMercedes After the 1978 season, and the latter death of Champman, Lotus never went back to the fight for titles. And yes, the 93' MacLaren was far more competitive then 92, but no more Honda provided engines that season.

@McLarenMercedes Also I'd say the 86 season for Senna aswell. The car was well designed, but reliability issues again.

For this and more the best

knight608 2 years ago 6
we are viewing differnt eras. in 80s you could see very wide spread performances. While now engines performance is within 20-30 hp, then you could see enormous diffs. remember Bellof was driving an old Cosworth aspirated with not more than 540 hp, Sennas Hart Turbo about 640 hp, the TAG Turbo of McLaren arrived at about 750 hp and the BMW Turbo at about 800 hp! all this is very relevant. in wet conditions engine power tends to be less important and driver abilities come out. wonderful Senna!
sargatanas88 2 years ago 3

niikodas 2 years ago
That race was stopped because Prost was French, and the organisers had agreed to stop the race to allow the fellow Frog to win the race. However it serves Prost right as he lost the championship that year narrowly!
Chunkychucky 2 years ago 4
Yes, had he finished 2nd in the race and the full points would have been awarded he would have gotten 6 points instead of the 4,5 for winning the stopped race. Then he would have won the title by 1 point from Lauda in 1984.
Senna's first win would have come here instead of in Portugal 1985.
Don't count Bellof in the Tyrrell, they lost all their points and positions after it was found they were cheating and underweight all season.

this was f1 , not the garbage we have to see these days , drivers like button do nothing and win a championship .
nefiurki 2 years ago 36
In that era, drivers won championships, now, the car is the one which wins the championship, Button is the best example. In Monaco 1984 Senna drove a really bad car, and was able to get a second place, meanwhile, Button, with the best car, reduced notably his performance in half-season while his mate was able to win races, remember his last win was on Turkey GP. That's real mediocrity...
themagicayrtonsenna 2 years ago 6
totally true ..
nefiurki 2 years ago
Perhaps, but the Red Bull caught up and was probably the best car, and would have won both titles if it had a better engine than the Renault.
Not to mention McLaren caught up too as did Ferrari.
SteveSpicerPortsmuth 2 years ago 2
@themagicayrtonsenna Senna was on the way to win this race in a Toleman Hart. Until the race control stopped it. Maybe to save Prosts win?
Saki2407 1 year ago
@Saki2407 Jacky Ickx was the race control chief on that race, at the same time he was working for Porsche, who supplied engines for McLaren's of the era. Some say that he was forced to stop the race before Senna could reach and overtake Prost, since it will be a shame for Porsche and McLaren to lost with a Toleman...
themagicayrtonsenna 1 year ago
@themagicayrtonsenna
Let's not mention Italy
McLarenMercedes 1 year ago
@Saki2407
McLarenMercedes 1 year ago
@themagicayrtonsenna
McLarenMercedes 1 year ago
@McLarenMercedes Come on, we all know Ferrari's car in 2004 was by far the best, perhaps the most dominant car of the last years, and we all know McLaren and Williams were at their worst season in years(Montoya, the best of those teams, was 5th, the worst, Coulthart finished 10th).
A similar situation happened with Mario Andretti and the death of Ronnie Peterson: the last one died, so the american won his only championship.
themagicayrtonsenna 1 year ago
@themagicayrtonsenna
According to people who knew Peterson, he was ordered by Colin Chapman (Lotus founder and team boss) not to race Andretti, and if they were leading a compfortable 1-2, then Peterson was not allowed to overtake him. Some say Peterson easily followed Andretti in the races, and probably could have overtaken him
Ford wanted an American champion, so Andretti got better treatment by Lotus.Chapman had promised Peterson no team-orders for 1979.Some say he would sign McLaren in '79
McLarenMercedes 1 year ago
@McLarenMercedes Seems logic to me, as I always considered Peterson to be better than Andretti...
themagicayrtonsenna 1 year ago
@themagicayrtonsenna
Colin Chapman once saw him driving some heavy Ford and keeping up with a lightweight sportscar on a really twisty road.Nobody knew how he did it
McLarenMercedes 1 year ago
@themagicayrtonsenna
China 2007
McLarenMercedes 1 year ago
@McLarenMercedes Button is a high experienced driver, but no way can be considered a espectacular, risky driver, like Hamilton or Vettel, which are also faster drivers(Hamilton proved that in 2010), but both can be considered immature and nervous drivers. I think Button won because he only has to be consistent, trying not to make mistakes, but was in front for the first races thanks to a really faster car. I'd loved to see a fast driver like Hamilton or Vettel in the 2009 Brawn GP1...
themagicayrtonsenna 1 year ago
@themagicayrtonsenna
McLarenMercedes 1 year ago
He won 6 races, which is more than anybody else. He had the best can and made the most out of it.
Well done Button.
