  • You know, I have the Aquila now, but I really like that sound of those Worth Strings. I dunno, I'm all confused now. Oh well, no need to change strings now, maybe next time! :3

  • im new at this whole ukulel thing, i just got one for my birthday, but for some reason it sounds nothing like one, idk if its out of tune or not... but i was wondering, does it matter what kind of ukulele/brand it is or the type of strings that make it sound like an ukulele ?

  • where can i buy aquila strings??

  • @50nollieman Try amazon. I just got some there

  • @50nollieman Or ebay. really cheap.

  • The first thing you play is utterly beautiful. Is there a name to it, or is it of your own composition?

  • @jamminluke

Thanks. You mean that F chord thing? Naw, the whole thing is just messing around with the exception of a little Rubber Ducky in the middle.

I wish I still had that uke, it was sweet.

  • @Docgrass Yes, everything before the first cut was amazing. I thought it sounded wonderful.

It is a nice ukulele. Simple, yet it still looks superb. I just got myself an Ohana SK70 and I'm using Aquila Nylguts. It looks amazing, although seeing this, I think maybe I should have stuck with the darker wood.

  • I personally hate Aquilas, and all nylon strings in general. I live in Taiwan, the humidity is a huge factor in deciding which strings to use. Nylon is very unstable in this climate and my ukulele would require constant re-tuning. Fluorocarbon strings very seldom require a tuning and have a shorter "break-in" period. That being said, if I were still in Massachusetts then I suppose it would be a non-issue. Anyway, great video! Thanks for the comparison!

  • I prefer the martin strings on mahogany ukulele's I have 2 koa martins one with martin strings one with the aquilla's. I prefer the martins over all for the warm sweet sound. That being said i do find the Aquilla's to be bright and punchy. I agree with the comments of another Aquilla's squeek. they are a little chunky to the touch. I think overall they are way over rated. Maybe they are better for playing out?

  • If you're going for warm and mellow you should definitely check out Martin uke strings!

  • They're both bright and brassy, the way I think a uke should sound. I can't tell much difference.

  • Aquila, Aquila, Aquila!

  • Hi! What's the best ukulele to start under $150 in your opinion?

  • @leonardocavaco I would stay away from Oscar Schmidt, I have a Lanikai that was about $100 and I would recommend one of those. I have had both and that was my experience.

  • @lp03g

You are sooo wrong.. Lanikai is one of the lowest quality ukuleles on the market.

Not to mention the electronics in the Lanikai is utter crap..

Your statement, sir. is the equivelent of suggesting a beginner guitar player "buy a low end fender squire over a martin or gibson"..

Such advise will cause the beginning ukulele player to simply give-up after a few attempts because of the HORRIBLE sound, when in truth its the ukulele.

Oscar Schmidt > Lanikai / Kala

    Oscar Schmidt < Kamaka

    FACT

  • @mr22turbo

Well I have had a much better experience with a Lanikai than Oscar Schmidt INSTRUMENT. I now own a KoAloha along with my Lanikai, now THAT is the gibson of ukuleles. Those are both cheap junk, and when you are buying cheap they don't measure up is all I am saying. FACT

  • Aquila all the way! I love their strings! They are amazing!

  • At first I was going to ask if your uke was a Kiwaya KTS-4... but you said so already in the description :P

  • hmmm... to my ears the Worths sound much nicer when finger picking, but the Aquilas sound quite a bit better when strummed. I guess that's what UAS is for.

  • Cool test. The Worths certainly seem more mellow but the flip side of that is that the Aquilas seem to retain better definition of the individual notes when you're chording. If I end up with as many ukes as I have guitars, I could see myself using both brands depending on each uke and what I mostly use it for! In fact, the need to use different strings for different songs sounds like a good reason to buy another uke! :)

  • Im thinking of getting Worth strings.. but i dont know where i can get them.. do you know where i can get worth strings?

  • can u please tell me what u are playing at 1:04 to 1:15, please, that sounds so cool!

  • I absolutely love my Nylguts. I've got them on all of my ukes right now, but I'm getting a set of Worths for my 'take everywhere' uke. The Nylguts are way to sensitive to temperature. If I'm even playing near a window the things get out of tune.

  • I like low G tuning on my Nalu mahogany Tenor. Aquila's low G is metal wound and tends to overpower the other strings, so I use Worth's low G string, which is actually a little dead sounding, but that is okay when you want subtle bass notes.

I found the Worths stretched out a lot more than the Aquilas.

  • Very helpful demonstration! Thank you... Nice playing and in tune as well!!

  • The Worth's are much, much more authentic sounding.

  • from what ive bin told aquila are the more popular string and are made with nylgut witch is diffrent to black nylon and transparent nylon strings .... aquila strings are white .....

  • Nice video ordered some worths to try. :-)

  • aquila sound a mix of warm and bright, very nice and mellow

  • aquila sound better to me

  • i'm sure it has alot to do with the instrument the woods used and design etc. which determin which sound best.

  • actually strings have a massive difference on sound, i've been using aquila strings and when i went away on holidays couldn't find them, but some other cheaper strings and it just sounded horrible in comparison

  • I put Worth Browns on my KTS-4 as soon as I got it based on comments from YouTube. I found that they were good when playing individual notes but when strummed they sounded thin and brittle. For me the Aquila Nylguts just sound and feel right.

  • Worth's are way better.

  • I think it would have been interesting to also hear the original Hilo string this uke would have come with. Many people prefer Worths to Hilos on a KTS4 and I would like to hear a direct comparrison

  • why strings white, and some bronw? what is the diferance?

  • No difference. Just coloration.

  • Thanks for putting together something like this. I wanted to ask about the feel of the strings, i've used aquila strings for years and have noticed that they're harder than most nylon strings. Are the worth strings softer and easier on the fingers and nails?

  • Greetings,

Thank you for your time & effort.

I didn't even think of posting when I tested.

    Thank you again.

  • Docgrass - It's this kind of posting that makes Youtube great. Many thanks! Due to your comparison video, I bought $45 worth of Worh strings today.Like everyone says, it all comes down to your style and what you like - I really like the wet, glassy sound of the Worths. Thanks again!

  • well you should also remember that you can control the brightness of the aquilla strings. its all about how you play the intrument and what emotions you are trying to portray..personally id go with the aquillas because you have brightness and volume. if you want to to have a "glassy or mellow" sound then manipulate how you pick or strum......its better to refine technique then to implement limitations.

  • I agree how you play affects the tone, but there's no question to my ears that there are some fundamental differences between these two brands of string. Whichever you prefer is up to you. Something else I've found with the Aquilas is they have a tendency to be quite squeaky, when fingerpicked in particular.

  • i totally agree that each brand of strings has its characteristics....i guess it would sorta boil down to the musician. string prefference would play a part but i think the other half is what style of playing and genre of music the player favors. as far as the squeaky sound..i notice when my hands start to sweat the aquillas start squeaking during transitions. honestly ive just adapted and made sure i dont drag my hands across the strings while playing...

  • very interesting. I was hoping I'd find something like this on the you tube. thanks for posting. I'm also interested in hearing a comparison between the worth browns and the worth clears. Have you tried them back to back yet?

  • what was the last song you played with the aquila?

  • Thanks for doing a systematic study. I wanted to do one but now I have yours as a reference.

I liked the Worths too--glassy is a good description. However, I found the Aquilas to be more playable. Maybe pliable is a another way to describe it.

  • Very cool. Thanks for your time and effort in putting this together.

  • Thanks for the string shoot-out!

  • Great video!

  • was debating on the Aquila's and this solidified my decision...thanks a ton. Great job with the playing and editing.

  • Thank you so much for comparing these two string types on the same uke! I have Worths on all of three of my ukes but judging from your video, I really need to try Aquilas on at least one of them. Thanks again!

  • nice comparison video. thanks for sharing!

  • I liked both. I think your descriptions of the sounds for both were accurate. Thanks for posting. I'll have to try some Worth strings on my ukes.
