  • You're amazing.

  • @tkjacobsen You're not so bad yourself. :)

  • love the dark kind of sound to this song :)

  • Not a big fan of the sappy love song genre, but this is a good tune. A little spark of genius in the composition, great musician and a good voice. Keep them coming ;-)

  • @kakuzu1233 Thanks!

  • I'm still trying to figure out why this isn't on iTunes yet.

  • @RoboticLifestyle It was, but the distributor had to rerelease it due to a glitch on Spotify. It should be back up in a few days. Fingers crossed....

  • I can't get enough of this song. I'm stunned by the quality of the whole thing. DAMN!

  • Best song on the album, I think.

  • Muito bom irmão

  • Best voice I've heard on YouTube, quite honestly. Reminds me of Joel Hanson from PFR. watch?v=EDg0C-78dik

  • @tgoyer Thanks!

Wow! PFR... now that's a blast from the past! Haven't heard them in like 10 years!

  • @joelcathey I think Joel Hanson is still out making music last I heard. Not sure what he's been up to lately, though.

  • Got here from a link on a Pomplamoose vid. You guys are another amazing group. You and Jack Conte, IMHO, have completely salvaged my opinion of the YouTube musical crowd. Nice work and sub'ed. :)

  • @tgoyer Thanks so much! Yeah, Pomplamoose is pretty cool.

  • How many instruments can you play? Very Good Video By The Way!

  • To be honest, I didn't think much of the youtube music community before I heard you. Then I heard this song, and now it's my favorite. Great job, keep up the fantastic work.

  • @Marth40000 How kind! Thanks a lot!

  • Melt - that´s the right word. Yes this voice... and when you sing with more than one voice. *sigh*

    It´s so touching. You´re great. ^^

  • I cried...and i'm speechless. Joel, how much sadness is inside you? I can't even grasp how much it must be considering how amazing your music is. Even though it might aswell be because you're just incredibly talented, i'm not trying to portray you as a depressed musician. ;)

I guess i'm not that speechless at all :)

  • It unravels my thoughts so smoothly. I enjoy yoour work very much.

  • you actually make my heart melt.

  • WTF Unknown youtube virtuoso!

keep it up, only a matter of time until you get the recog u deserve

  • Wow! Great performance by a truly talented musician with an amazng voice!

  • Oh, sehr gut!

  • also i saw someone else say that you sounded like aaron marsh and i totally heard the resemblance, especially with the falsetto, but you have a stronger voice than he does lol.

  • the twist should have been that there really isn't another room!

kidding. this song is crazy good and you're crazy talented, man. good work. looking forward to more.

  • @joelcathey oh my God you're utterly phenomenal. Your words for this song are perfect. I feel like we could be best friends, or soulmates bahaha you're beautiful. :) Extremely inspiring, and the most poetic man i've ever met. I Love You. Period. I listen to you everyday i'll have you know. Your music gets me through the day peacefully. Looks like i should sent this in a message :) oh well.

  • Your song is beautiful! It is very inspiring to see You playing all the instruments. Great work and musical talent!

  • One word: AMAZING!

  • This is phenomenal. Seriously.

I'll most likely be buying soon. So great!

  • WOW this vid should have way more views!!!

  • @nipeppepin It really should!!

  • @nipeppepin I agree. Joel is really musically inspiring to me and I come back when I need a pep talk ;) I'm just glad that he didn't make the same mistake Pomplamoose did with the overexposure and becoming a product (and honestly the drop in the overall song quality didn't help). If he stays the course, people will discover him and his huge catalog of great tunes.

  • Thanks for putting more fantastic into the world.

  • hahahaha dang this is soo cool! i love it!! soo good! im subrscibing

or how ever u spell it

  • Sometimes I forget how brilliant you are... but then you make a new song, and I quickly remember. :-)

  • :D

So we should do another VS soon.

  • Omg I can't believe I haven't come across you sooner...your amazing dude it makes no sense...

  • Hahaha. Thank you so much! :D

  • Awesome, Joel Cathey.

  • Thanks, Danielle!

  • you are just so totally WOW : )

  • When you woke up on April 11, 12, 14.. whatever... what said "insane love?" Just curious..

Song is as always, superb!! Cheers! Melissa

  • Hahaha.... Well, the song was supposed to be done on April 11, but I was having major writer's block. So I made the guy into an insane person and it seemed to help speed up the process. :D

    Thanks for commenting!

  • Your voice is so calming

  • I agree with jack!

Joel, you're probably my favorite youtube artist (probably 'cause I can't decide between Julia Nunes and you).

But be sure of one thing : Joel, you're an AMAZING ARTIST! And you have fan all over the world (i'm a french guy presently in Barcelona, Spain).

Oh, end once you'll become famous and international (you will!), don't forget to come to France!

    Keep on ... Please !

    PS : Happy Birthday

  • Thank you so much! Actually, France is pretty much the TOP place I wish to perform! So I'll see you then! :)

And thanks for the birthday wishes!

  • I'll be waiting for you to come to France and know that, even though french usually aren't very warm with americans, you already have (at least) a fan and a friend there!

Ho and i just see that i'm born (2 years (you're 25 right?) and) 5 days after you!!! Today is my birthday. Vive les hommes d'avril! (...Hourra for april's mens!)

  • holy crap, dude. every song you make. it's unbelievable. your music is at the top of modern music. just beautiful.

  • Wow, man.... Thank you so much! It means a ton coming from you.

    For reals....

  • That's actually what I thought about his collab with Wade Johnston - Very Thile.

  • Haha.... Yeah, :25 on that vid is especially Thile. My friend made fun of me for it.

  • I'm glad that I don't just like your songs because you're my brother, but because they are AWESOME! Seriously, the backgrounds on this one are gooooo.

    Happy Birthday!

  • Yaaaay! And thanks!

    :D

  • I love the concept. This song is too good!

  • this song makes me happy and sad at the same time. it's a masochistic kind of bitter sweetness. Thank you : )

  • Very intelligent, Joel. The harmonies were exquisite. Loved the waavy effect. But I felt the drums were wrong. Mostly I felt that mix was too hot (too loud or too forwards in the mix). I think I would have brought all of the vocals up into the foreground, and pushed everything else back, with the drums at the bottom of the mix. I realize how much you love your percussion work, however. Maybe you should love the vocals in this piece a bit more, and the instrumentals a bit less? Marius

  • Just what I needed right now. I know it defeats the purpose of having a video, but I just closed my eyes and listened. Your style and your tone is so unique and just takes me to a different world. Thank you so much for making such beautiful music and sharing it with us. Your efforts are not lost on this listener. I hope to hear so much more from and of you in the future.

    -Manda

  • Thank you!!! I'm glad you closed your eyes. It's important.

  • I Honestly love you !!! This is my new favorite song, and you should come play in Chicago!!!!

  • Joel, your talent is on the rise. Wonderful production, sir.

  • Why, thank you!

  • So this is the first video of yours I've seen and I LOVE this song... it's beautiful.

  • Bri!!!

    Thanks!

    I miss you!

    :)

  • I also have Molly to thank for linking me to this (thanks Molly).

It's an incredibly original idea for a song and you pull it off amazingly well. I'm going to look at your other videos now, but it's pretty safe to say that you will soon have another subscriber...

  • I really enjoyed the lyrics/the meaning of the song. It was great.

Also, the flickering in the video was perfect.

    :)

  • Beautiful...

    the harmonies are simply lovely.

  • You just get better and better! :)

  • Wow, the lyrics and melody remind me a lot of Tomorrow Too Late by Saves The Day. I'm digging it.

  • Hey, aren't you that guy who liked Molly's front teeth? (Now we have the interesting dilemma of who is more weird: you for saying it in the first place, or me for remembering it was you...)

No need for me to ask how you found this...

  • Indeed I am! We do indeed have quite the dilemma. I will just chalk it up to my knack for saying strange things, and your good memory!

  • Really, really, really , really great song! I want it! Again...really smooth vocals! You got it man! You got it!

  • Dude, you are awesome, and I still have not done a video song. I have a lot of excuses. And, that's all I have to say about that. I guess my greatest excuse is my lameness. Like that has stopped me before.

Anyways, I really like your song. And your video song. AWESOME!

  • wow. glad molly linked to this on twitter!

  • Haha.... Me, too! Yay, Molly!

  • You have the most beautiful voice! I wish I had your tone. Gorgeous. Thanks for making my day by posting this new song.

  • Woo-hoo! I made someone's day! :)

    Thank you so much.

  • wow man. totally sweet.

    you win.

  • amazing <3

  • Hahaha....

    Thanks!

  • FREAKING

  • IS .

  • THIS

  • Writing my own stuff I know the answer to "HOW do you come up with this?" is equal parts of "Manic channeling" and "I have NO f'n idea" ;)

But your music is amazing. Even the backing vocals on this are non standard and ..crazy sounding. You keep one upping yourself and never disappoint.

  • Wow! Thanks so much!

  • Great song Joel, I'll feature it for Thursday's blog post & tweet a link.

  • Hey, thanks!

  • I'm officially obsessed.

  • You are so amazing.

I totally make my mouth do weird things when playing music with my hands, so I bet I would do weird things with my hands while making music with my mouth too.

  • wow, your harmonies and arrangements are so unique and perfect. You are fantastic.

  • My second favorite of yours <3

Also, I just got paid. Soooo.....

I think I'm going to go buy MP3s of like, ALL of your songs.

    I can't even help it.

  • Woo-hoo! Thanks, Pogi!

  • how do you do it?

tell me you don't have a full time job so i won't feel so bad about my oh so feeble videos.

mostly the writing is absolutely stellar *****

  • 'i don't remember doing that'

    we never do.

i don't remember bobbing with the beat of my flute music...

yet it always seems to happen. o.O

    it's an musician thing. =]

this is awesome, keep it up!

    -maggie.

  • Haha. I watched your newest vid, so I know exactly what you're talking about. :D

  • :D it's true it's true. =]]

  • absolutely captivating. Loves this tune so much.

  • Joel...how are you not famous?

  • BOMBB song, lil switch up on the love song. i really really like it.

    love the lyrics

  • Nat! Thanks!

And thanks for the purchase. :)

  • That was just amazing....seriously thats the best one I've heard from you I think

  • ooooooo oh oooooo...yep good jam

  • see, this is why you're a genius. because you can take a sort of saddish situation (crazy dude longing for what he can't see or have...but you obvi already know what your song is about) and turn it into musical magic. i wish i could steal your creativity for a bit, then return it to you. but that's quite impossible, so i'll just let you know that you're a flower in winter, a raincloud in drought, and an A+ on a really hard test.

    AKA...YOU ROCK.

  • :D :D :D

    Thank you!!!

Eu responderei logo!

  • Ahhh, nothing better than seeing a new joelcathey vid in my subscriptions. Brilliant song.

  • Favorited! I love it!

  • wow! that was absolutely amazing! i loved it!

  • Hey awesome, I didn't notice you had a download store before. I'm on my way now :)

  • A beautiful song, and also a very unique inspiration for the lyrics. Love it, as usual.

  • LOVE IT!!!!

  • Thanks!!!

  • I just listened to the song again and i had to post another comment lol sorry :D

I absolutely love the drums from 3:00 to 3:17, very very catchy. And your voice is unbelievable, this whole song is so heartfelt, even though i do not think you expierienced this story yourself. Well. That's your business haha.

  • (it wouldnt all fit into one comment sorry :D)

But i don't understand the ukulele/guitar bit in the beginning, i feel like the notes should be shorter, more staccato-like. Or did you want it to be like that in order to make it sound especially sad?

Why do i feel like i told you the song was horrible? Arrrgghh...i didn't mean to say that...i love the song! Words just don't like me haha

  • Haha. Wait, are you saying the notes *should* be shorter? Or that they *are* shorter? Cuz I put the damping underneath the strings so that they would be shorter. And that uke is being put through a vinyl emulator, making it sound more like it's being played off a record from like 1970. I don't know... it all sounded really cool. Plus, the strummed uke kinda gives a nice contrast, I think.

But don't worry. I know you're not bashing on my song. :D

    Thanks for commenting, Laura!

  • I noticed the damping when i watched it, but i was just wondering why you didn't pick the strings with two fingers in order to make it sound shorter.

And i am not playing any string instrument, that's why i have no idea whether that made any sense at all haha

How long does it take you to record a song by the way? Coz when you're recording time flies by, i never feel like having recorded for a long time, when it's actually been 5 hours...

  • Well, I still wanted to have a strummed sound. And when you pick, the tone is a little bit harsher since the strings are moving in and out instead of up and down. :)

This song took up about 1 1/2 60 min. video tapes. I usually record the whole song just to get an idea of how I want it to sound. Then once I've figured that out, I rerecord everything with the video camera on. So with everything from start to finish (not including writing) this song took about ten hours.

  • That was great! As usual, the background vocals and harmonies were awesome. Nice video too.

  • Wow i'm glad i woke up this early (it's half ten haha)...very nice song Mr joelcathy!

And i like your hand, i think you should stop being mean to this very special part of your body, as this hand plays the ukulele and the drums and the trumpet and...

Oh, and i didn't mean to underestimate your other hand...sorry :D (Wow, i should stop writing about hands. Stop. Now.)

  • Hahahaha....

  • :43 - Don't worry about your hand. You're just being soulful. Lots of white folks do it when they sing standing up.

I don't know how you feel about direct comparisons to other songwriters (some people are really touchy about it) but this reminds me a lot of Sean Watkins' more recent stuff, "Blinders On" and the like... if that even means anything to you, it might not.

  • Haha. Yeah, actually Sara Watkins does this weird hand thing, too. I've never quite figured out why she does it. And I have no prob being compared to other songwriters, especially brilliant ones like Sean. It definitely means something to me. I see the Watkins just about every other week down in LA. :D

  • You lucky bastard. I've been to ONE Watkins show, and it was at the OC Art Museum of all places.

    Whatever, man. Just - whatever.

  • Well if you lived down here, you'd be welcome to come with.

  • I'm going to hold you to that over the summer.

  • You better.

  • Oh all that talent AND you're a NC fan. I knew I liked you for a reason ;)

Did you like the Punch Brothers and the Fiction Family album?

  • Once again: wow! I wish I could write songs like that. The arrangement is great and it's beautifully sang. Bravo Joel !

  • Agathe! Thank you so much! I'm ecstatic that you like it. :)

  • that was excellent!.. kind of melancholic but cheery as well.. im buying your music now no more procrastinating it :)

  • wow! as usual, the song is great and u performed it very nicely...

keep being that creative! greetings from germany

  • Thank you very much!

  • Ha. Dandelion face. :)
