In Israel for many years there was a night show called "Tsiporey Lila" (night birds) every Sunday night in a radio channel of Galey Tsahal presented by Gideon Richel
|This tune is familiar to many Israelis with good a good memory.
Quincy Jones Orchestra's Grammy-winning performance of Velas (Sails) written by Brazil's legendary composer Ivan Lins, featuring "Toots" Thielemans on harmonica, guitar, & whistling. Great performance!!! From the CD "The Dude".
Oh man. What memories. When I was in the Air Force stationed in Germany. After a long day I would come home to my dorm ....put on THE DUDE album, (go to this song) and just ....CHILL). That was back in 1982 but in some ways it seems like yesterday. This whole album was the bomb.
I love this. My mom and dad had this record.. When I listen to this , It reminds me of the happy times I had when I was little girl. If I start doing poetry, I probably would use this tune if I write a poem sutable for it..!
Lush and beautiful!! This pretty thing from the legendary composer Ivan Lins is by the Quincy Jones orchestra featuring Toots Thielemans' beautiful, swinging harmonica and whistling. Grammy-winner from "The Dude".
Loved Toot's work too in "Midnight Cowboy." It made the film a classic, when it would otherwise have been seen as rather "humdrum," I suspect.
----
The harmonica is often considered to be a "cheesy...even a silly...sort of instrument. But in the hands and fingers of a genius like Toots, even real skeptics must reconsider their viewpoint, I would think. THIS is truly magnificent stuff, IMO.
No doubt..I used to kick this recorad all the time when I was 14; Toots Thielemans did his thing back in the day (the harmonica player)!! Thanks for the post, boswell!!!

Followup: I turn fifty years old later this year.
I'm struggling now with a medical condition known as "tinnitus," aka "ringing in the ears."
It's a small issue, as such things go, sure.
But...its cause is unknown, and it's generally considered to be uncurable.
So I will apparently (I'm told) never again know what it's like to experience a moment of pure "silence."
HEARTBREAKING!
But in the same moment... it also magnifies my appreciation for calm, soothing, casual music like this.
