Many a friendly argument I had with friends, when I said Bowie sang The Jean Genie live on Top Of The Pops... at long last I have the proof... luv ya's..
Last week, I was told about this being on TV with some twit talking over the solo!! So glad to see it here without commentary. Even with fudged bits it's a bloody gem!!
So my memory wasn't playing tricks on me about seeing this at the time! Love how Trevor Bolder anticipates they're going back to the chorus and then has to backtrack to the vamp.
If one only watches the video doesn't notice at all the story behind it. I say yes to the - what? doesn't have no name? - the info "about" the video under it (there was a name for this - we know what it is and what it does but... That section shows more than simple tags. There should be something like there is id3 for mp3). Many folkes upload their videos without any info (when it's very relevant) and pass the whole time answering their viewers. So "yes to video info."
This is why I wanted to hear this! I always heard that David Bowie could play the mouth organ, and, I confess, that's one reason why I wanted to hear this rare footage. David Bowie deserves to appear on the LLS with Craig Ferguson, and get the 'golden mouth organ award'. Just sayin'. Yeah, it is so 'American' of me, isn't it, David?
A bit of Keith Relf Yardbirds-esque harp towards the end. There is nobody on this planet cooler than Bowie, although Jimmy Page comes a close second.
I was so excited when I heard about this lost footage, I peed my pants a little. :3
And such high video/audio quality!
I go through periods of being obsessed with Bowie for months, then I go somewhere else for a bit, then come back to him. And EVERY SINGLE TIME I rediscover him, he amazes me. Totally and absolutely. How many artists can you say you truly never get bored of? How many inspire you to your very core? For me, just one. This one.
AWESOME!! It's amazing that after collecting Bowie for nearly 30 years now that I still get to see things I've never seen before. How mind blowing that the camera man still had a copy of this!
Fantastic performance - and - the LARGEST sideburns ever (e.g. at 4:15)

I know that many artists elected to mime on TOTP because of the poor sound quality expected on television back in the day.
This is live, and still sounds glorious nearly 40 years later!

Great footage. An all-time classic but even here they screw up the verse to chorus transition
( as on the recorded version). Weird that...

I wish they found the lost footage of The Beatles performing "Paperback Writer" from TOTP 1966 but that looks highly unlikely.
This is great and the best part is Bowie performed this live.

Thanks for sharing this video. It is strange to suddenly listen to such a familiar song, and hear it in a different way.

Yes, hang your heads in shame BBC,for wiping, or losing, the footage of the Scott Walker Show back in the 60's. What a loss that has proved to be.
