  • Fantastic performance - and - the LARGEST sideburns ever (e.g. at 4:15)

  • I know that many artists elected to mime on TOTP because of the poor sound quality expected on television back in the day.

This is live, and still sounds glorious nearly 40 years later!

  • The man we have to thank for saving this recording is there breifly mid shot at 1:07 with his beloved EMI 2001 camera.

John Henshall we salute you !

    Keep em coming !

  • tight tight tight

  • VIYES POUR TOUJOURS!!.. Viens rejouer de la zzik! happy happy...!.

  • Great footage. An all-time classic but even here they screw up the verse to chorus transition

( as on the recorded version). Weird that...

  • Love love love this!

  • If you don't love Bowie, you're not human.

  • FANX!!

  • A brilliant version, really shows his love of Lou Reed (or is it Doug Yule??)

  • went to see him on the 22nd of may that year 1973 wow still there when i see this

  • Many a friendly argument I had with friends, when I said Bowie sang The Jean Genie live on Top Of The Pops... at long last I have the proof... luv ya's..

  • Thank god Ovid

  • Last week, I was told about this being on TV with some twit talking over the solo!! So glad to see it here without commentary. Even with fudged bits it's a bloody gem!!

  • Aaannndd there go my ovaries.

  • "This version here is slightly different and more complete to the one which appeared on the BBC's TOTP2 Christmas show on 21st December 2011 ".

    Indeed Thank You ZS T.V.

  • So my memory wasn't playing tricks on me about seeing this at the time! Love how Trevor Bolder anticipates they're going back to the chorus and then has to backtrack to the vamp.

  • So many comments already!

If one only watches the video doesn't notice at all the story behind it. I say yes to the - what? doesn't have no name? - the info "about" the video under it (there was a name for this - we know what it is and what it does but... That section shows more than simple tags. There should be something like there is id3 for mp3). Many folkes upload their videos without any info (when it's very relevant) and pass the whole time answering their viewers. So "yes to video info."

  • Really enjoyed this, great performance and sound...

  • serious

  • I wish they found the lost footage of The Beatles performing "Paperback Writer" from TOTP 1966 but that looks highly unlikely.

This is great and the best part is Bowie performed this live.

  • This is why I wanted to hear this! I always heard that David Bowie could play the mouth organ, and, I confess, that's one reason why I wanted to hear this rare footage. David Bowie deserves to appear on the LLS with Craig Ferguson, and get the 'golden mouth organ award'. Just sayin'. Yeah, it is so 'American' of me, isn't it, David?

  • this is great !!!

  • A bit of Keith Relf Yardbirds-esque harp towards the end. There is nobody on this planet cooler than Bowie, although Jimmy Page comes a close second.

  • Nice mix ;

  • Have all his stuff :) and as for music today lol

  • I was so excited when I heard about this lost footage, I peed my pants a little. :3

    And such high video/audio quality!

I go through periods of being obsessed with Bowie for months, then I go somewhere else for a bit, then come back to him. And EVERY SINGLE TIME I rediscover him, he amazes me. Totally and absolutely. How many artists can you say you truly never get bored of? How many inspire you to your very core? For me, just one. This one.

David Bowie, the one and only. ♥

  • Thank you

  • Thanks for sharing this video. It is strange to suddenly listen to such a familiar song, and hear it in a different way.

  • As soon as I saw this I thought of you David!!! I am sure you were delighted beyond words as I was!! Seasons Greetings to you darling !!

  • Fantastic! Delighted that this classic clip has finally been found.

  • Saw this on BBC yesterday :D

  • He's the only man with such showmanship.

    woohoooo

  • he's so beautiful

  • Yes, hang your heads in shame BBC,for wiping, or losing, the footage of the Scott Walker Show back in the 60's. What a loss that has proved to be.

    Jack ,Devonport, Tasmania, Australia

  • Blown away,an amazing find.

  • RELEASE THIS AS A SINGLE NOW!!!!

    Best ever version!

  • Bowie is The Man! SuperSonic Video! I Love This!

  • beyond legendary. thanks for unearthing !

  • he is so hot!

  • AWESOME!! It's amazing that after collecting Bowie for nearly 30 years now that I still get to see things I've never seen before. How mind blowing that the camera man still had a copy of this!
