  • @AerialFibre your wrong, sooooo many questions you could ask

A white man would ask "Am i a black man"

Angel will say No, Devil will say Yes (Thats obviously the door to hell)

Just ask any question that you know the answer to be true.

  • there is thousands of questions you could ask..for example if they are both identical like Ricky said them just ask them both , "are you identical to the other guard"..the good would answer yes and evil no..ot you could ask are you both wearing the same suit...etc

  • "Am I a goat?"

  • My first thought was to ask "What colour are my eyes"

  • I am Ron Burgundy?

  • "How many doors are there?"

  • What about "What am i wearing?"

  • i ask what my name.....i cant believe i spent 10 mins looking for a complicated answer when a easy one was right there

  • i would ask "Does God love me?" and the one that says no is the Hell Door because it is a lie. God does love me and everyone else! haha

  • If you were to ask one guard 'Does 1 + 1 = 2?' that is your one question answered. Where do you go from there? You still don't know if the liar or the truth teller is behind Heaven or Hell. The question I would ask is 'I want to go to hell. What door will the other person send me through?'

  • @ProtagonistLee The liar is always guarding the door to hell.

  • @tehZwok I have watched is again and you are right, the guard at the door to Hell always lies. Simple really, 1+1=2.

  • "what will the other say he is guarding?"

the liar will lie and say the other is guarding hell. the truth teller will know the liar will say he is guarding heaven. therefore... whatever the answer the one you're asking, is what door they are guarding.

  • So there is no retards in heaven then . Nice

  • The correct question to ask either guard is "what's my name"

  • @johntheother why ? lol you are a stranger how do they know your name ?

  • Tell em to point to their own door.

  • Id ask "what's my name?"

  • I would ask are you a guard

  • Just ask a question where yes is the only answer

  • I should of read description before i commented :D hahaha

  • I would ask whats my name and then the one lying wouldnt say it because he always lies and the one telling the truth would say it

  • The worst thing about Ricky Gervais is his ego.

    Otherwise he's ok.

  • I LOVE this show. Always has me in stitches.

  • I hate how Ricky belittles Karl sometimes and I don't give a fuck how many Baftas and Emmys he has.

  • You all got this wrong. We don't want to know who of them is a liar. Even if we knew, we would still need one more question to ask him which door he guards. Because we don't know whether liar guards hell or heaven - that's the problem. So Ricky's answer is actually the only one correct, because it gives us the answer right away. So it should be:

"What would the other guy say if I asked him which door he guards"

If the answer is heaven, we go through the asked guy's door. Otherwise, the opposite.

  • the first thing I thought would be to ask something like "what colour are my eyes?" or something along those lines

  • If that door leads to heaven. Can I go through it?

    Angel : Yes

    Demon : No

  • Ricky's question wouldn't help either, this one would:

"Can I ask more than one question?"

Hell would say yes, heaven would say no.

  • Comment removed

  • Like a lot of people are saying, you could just ask one of the guards a question you know the answer to. You'll know if they lie or tell the truth by their answer and therefore, you'll know which door leads where.

  • Ricky's right, you ask the guard which door the Other guard is guarding.

  • @Sammicsno no wait, that's not right either. I give up.

  • Comment removed

  • So close but the answer to that would still be useless. You ask the guard, "If I were to ask the other guard which door he's guarding, what would he say?" No matter what, the right answer would be the opposite of the answer you get. Either your guard is lying but the other guard would tell the truth or your guard is telling the truth about the other guard's lie. Either way it adds up to a lie.

  • Probably been mentioned already, but the only amendment needed to the puzzle is that one guard lies and one tells the truth - but you don't know whether the liar is guarding heaven or hell. Then Ricky's answer works but "does 1+1=2?" doesn't.

  • @jmscarlett7 Actually, Ricky said that the one who guards Hell always lies. So, according to that logic, the question "does 1+1=2," would work.

  • @hall9111 I know, I was describing how you could alter the puzzle so that "Does 2+2=5?" no longer works and the solution is no longer trivial.

  • Ask one of the guards which door the other guard would say lead to Heaven, then pick the opposite one.

If I asked the guard who always lies, he'd lie about the other guard being truthful, so pick the opposite door and you have Heaven.

If I asked the truthful guard, he'd tell the truth about the other guard lying, and so pick the opposite, and you get Heaven again.

  • @Frequency404 Bingo! I didn't notice this when I posted my comment, you beat me to it.

  • @lilhoogie no ask #1 what #2 would say if you asked him what door he was guarding. You would get 2 different answers. The one guarding hell, would say hell, and the one guarding heaven would say heaven.

  • A LOT of people here dont get that you can ask only ONE question to find out which door leads to heaven. So the shit 2+2 doesent work, sure you find out which one is lying but you dont find out what door is the right one. Ricky's anwser is the correct anwser.

  • @AerialFire I suppose the assumption made is that the truth-telling guard would be the one guarding Heaven (after all, it seems a bit of a contradiction to have a liar and a demon guarding hell...albeit an interesting contradiction, hmmm...)

But of course, you're right, Ricky's right, one answer...

To be honest, if it were me, I'd just turn around and walk away--Heaven can't be all that great if its administrator, God, is so shifty as to hire such cheeky lying bastards as that guard... ;)

  • @AerialFire If you find out who is lying, you find out which to choose.Because the person who isn't lying is guarding the door to heaven. It's very simple.

  • @AerialFire Yes, but Ricky asked the question incorrectly. He said that "the guard guarding hell always tells a lie, the one guarding heaven always tells the truth". Thus, ascertaining which door leads to heaven is simply a matter of finding out which guard is telling the truth. His seemingly minor mistake completely simplifies the problem.

  • @AerialFire 0:46 - 0:55

    here ya go...

"A LOT of people here dont get that" ^^

  • @GAISENSE I still don't get this concept/logic and I just don't understand it...what is the right question to find out which door is the door leading to heaven?

  • @AerialFire Then you've just found out which door is the right one. It's the opposite of the guy who was lying therefore you've found the right door.

  • Comment removed

  • So basically, the easiest way to answer this riddle, is to ask a question that you, yourself, know the answer to.

  • @Mintydeadman but then the guard could say i dont know the answer to that question and they could be lying or telling the truth

  • Comment removed

  • Ricky doesn't get it wrong, its just that there is another way

  • Karls idea works too!!!! If you asked the man at the door if he can get God so he can sign for the mail then the person telling the truth will either say yes and get God, or say no and do nothing, where as the liar will always so no and do nothing! Think about it!

  • @mdaugherty1221 Ricky's answer is right. If you asked one of them, what the other one would say if you asked them what door they are guarding you would get different answers. The devil would say that the Angel would say that he's guarding Hell, because he would lie. The angel would say that the devil would say that he is guarding heaven because he knows that devil would lie. Therefore whatever the answer is, thats the door they are guarding.

  • @WhyscfcWhy wait now, so #1 is guarding hell, and #2 is guarding heaven. I ask #1 what is #2 guarding. #1 says hell, because he's lying. I ask #2 what #1 is guarding. #2 says hell, because he's telling the truth... it doesn't work... or did i screw up?

  • But if he asked steve, steve would say 'hell' too because steve always tells the truth. So in gervais questions both people would respond "hell" and thus you'd get nowhere with that question. Point for Karl.

  • @RevolutionRequired 3:38 Ricky doesn't answer the question correctly. If Ricky only lied he would have had to say god wasn't in. Now if you assume God is always "in", you know for sure he is behind Steve's door because you just heard Ricky lie to you

  • i actually still don't get it

  • I honestly think the Ricky Gervais Show is genius, it's original and incredibly hilarious, and the three of them feed off each other so well it's brilliant. Can't wait for the new season.

  • @tememongo and yet you spell it wrong it's Karl

  • Why not ask "does 1 + 1 = 2?"

  • @thevidfather because they would both say yes

  • @voodoochildblu no, assuming both of them are are that 1 plus 1 does equal 2, heaven guard would say 'yes', but hell guard would lie and say 'no'.

  • @thevidfather

Because if you asked that you would only get an anwser on WHO is lying and who is telling the truth but you still dont know which one is guarding the right door and You can ask ONLY ONE question. So that doesent work. Rickys solution is the only solution, its an old riddle and that is the only solution.

  • @thevidfather Or, "Is that a door behind you?"

  • @thevidfather "the guards have no knowledge of the world around them, except which door leads to heaven and which leads to hell, and whether the other guard lies or tells the truth."

  • @ellguy11 Then you could simply ask "Does one of you always lie?", or "Does one of these doors go to heaven?", or "Are there 2 doors?", or "Is there a heaven/hell?"

  • @spiralgear You also seem to be forgetting that Ricky told the riddle wrong, you arent supposed to know that the devil always lies and the angel always tells the truth, therefore none of those questions would work, only the answer ricky said would work...

  • @thevidfather because that counts as your one question

  • @009SoundVEVO yes it does. And when he says. "Yes." he is telling the truth. and if he says. "No." He is lying, and that is how you win :)

  • @pizzaBmike but that tells you nothing about the doors, and now you have no questions left.

  • @009SoundVEVO The one guarding hell always tells a lie. So if they answer the question. "What is 1+1," if they say two, you know it to be the truth, and thus the answer is the truth, and the one who tells the truth guards the gates of heaven. Any other answer would be a lie, and thus the lie would be coming from the guard in front of the gate to hell. He says at the start of the video that the guard to hell lies and the one to heaven tells the truth.

  • Comment removed

  • @thevidfather what if the good one is retarded?

  • @thevidfather All that will do is identify which one is the liar and which one is the truth teller. You won't then ascertain which door is heaven and which is hell because you only get one question! The liar isn't always guarding hell necessarily and vice versa. Ricky told the puzzle incorrectly.

  • @frediscool123 That is on his head then, but the way he told it that method would work.

  • @thevidfather Math, it solves everything.

  • I don't get it , cos my eyes glaze over wen I think about it :-s , funny yhough

  • Yes, saw this for the first time in the film "Labyrinth" too... it took a while for me to get it. Still gives me a headache though.

  • No see, he could ask (example) Steve, "if I asked Ricky which door led to heaven, which would it be?" and Steve was the honest one and said Rick would tell you to go left, then the left one goes to hell because Rick would be lying. But if Steve was the liar and told you Rick would say left, it still goes to hell because truthful rick would tell you to go right. Make sense? That was from doctor who. But he could also just ask one if they are guarding a door, you know. :T

  • ask them any question that both, if answering truthfully would have to be the same; only one truthful answer is available.

    such as a math question.

if both asked "whats 2+2" the only correct answer is 4, but the devil would have to answer incorrectly, which would be any other number than 4

  • I remember this in "The Labyrinth"... Gave me a headache back then too.

  • I love how when Karl say's "you always get a little sniddy one" They put ricky's fae on the other guard

  • As they know what's behind the door they're behind, you could just ask "Does the truth teller always stand in front of heaven?" If they say yes, go on in, if they say no, take a short walk to the other door.

  • "why should i believe that you are guarding heaven?"

  • @FIFAfailz "Because I am."

  • there's so many things you could say like "what's my name" blah blah blah.

that's why this riddle should have a rule: you're not allowed to know the answer to the question you ask.

  • fucking hell i love carl

  • i recon id say what colour t shirt am i wearing

  • @FlipAndLand since you said we know who they are id kick the girl in the face and walk through her door

  • The best part is that Ricky is acting so superior, saying how people cant wrap their heads around it, and he gets the riddle wrong, the answer wrong, and doesnt even notice it.

    Clever lad.

  • @haakongnome The answer is not wrong. You just don't understand it.

  • @FlipAndLand Hehe, no, you dont understand it. Watch it again, and ask yourself the riddle a few times, and maybe you'll understand what I mean. Good luck!

  • @haakongnome He forgot to mention that the answer can only be specifically about what's behind the doors. Taking that into account, his answer was right.

  • @haakongnome with a considerably significant qualification in philosophy.

  • Just watched the episode, and I was extremely puzzeled by Ricky's "answer", He says: "Just ask any one of the guards which door the other is guarding, and whatever they answer is behind their own door" Which I could not get my head around, because; The liar would say the other guy is guarding hell, and the truthteller would say the other is guarding hell. I figured it out tho. You ask; "Would that guy tell me this door leads to heaven?" And you choose the one that said no.

  • @haakongnome Wrong on both counts: if you choose the one that said no, then you'd end up in Hell. With Ricky's answer, the truthteller would say heaven.

  • @natyuotube Watch the clip again my friend.

  • @haakongnome Judging by your comeback it seems you still don't understand. Think about the rules for both guards not just one.

  • @natyuotube Let's pretend that we know who is who. Also, let's say that the truth teller is a girl and the liar is a boy. If you ask the truth teller what the liar would say he is guarding, the truth teller would tell the truth and tell you that the liar would lie about his own door and say he is guarding heathen. If you asked the liar what door the truth teller is guarding, he would lie and say that the truth teller is guarding hell. They are guarding what ever door the other says.

  • Karl should just say "do I have a head shaped like an orange?" the one guarding hell will say no, the one guarding heaven will say yes. Haha

  • "What Door leads to Hell?"

  • @MajickDemoniack Liar: Points to Heaven's door, Truth-sayer - points to Hell's door - wait a moment - you ask each one which Heaven's door is, because the one guarding Hell will say Heaven's door, and so will the one guarding Heaven's door. :D

  • @MajickDemoniack That wouldn't work.

  • Why wouldn't you just ask a question with a definite answer that you know the answer to such as "Who's the current President of the United States?"

  • @thepantweaver because Ricky didn't explain it correctly; you're supposed to ask the guards only one question pertaining to the doors. They don't know about anything else, like the "outside world" and such. You're supposed to be told not to ask any questions that don't have anything to do with the doors or what's behind them.

  • Oh and the best way to know is ask a question you know the answer to...any one because (god) would give the right answer (devil) would lie and give the wrong one.

  • Has it been pointed out that Ricky's question doesn't work at all...Karl ask ricky(the devil)what door is the other one guarding?even with him saying hell because the devil is going to lie,Karl couldn't know if he was lying or not without asking Steven(god) a question too...Ricky said whatever one he says the other ones guarding is the opposite, but if Karl asked Steven instead of ricky then Steven would say the other guy is guarding hell and it would be true, not the opposite of what he says...I

  • I would ask Whats my name?

  • @Samotslayer why?

  • I told my friend this riddle, and he solved it really quick, Just ask one of them "Is my name ____" and then put your name in, i'm pretty sure you'll know who's telling the truth and who is lying. Blew my mind.

  • I've uh... got some post for God 'ere

  • The proper way to ask the riddle is where the liar may or may not be guarding the door to hell. This way, even if you ask an obvious question like "am I asking you a question," you'd find out which one was the liar, but then you couldn't ask which door to take, because you'd have already used up your question. Ricky asked it wrong when he stated that the liar was guarding the door to hell.

  • @mashovie that's not a question.

  • The beauty of Karl's mind is that it's too childlike to stay within the parameters of the riddle. He just figures, why put up with this? I'll do something else. Say what you want about him, that's thinking "outside the box" ^_^

  • Simplest answer - ask "what is my name" - heaven will tell you your name, hell will tell you a different name. Sorted. And I'm not even that smart

  • Another way would be to ask one of them. " Does one of these 2 doors lead to heaven?" If you're talking to the lier than he would say no and you would know that is the door to hell. If he were to say yes, than you would know that guy is telling the truth and that door leads to heaven.

  • The riddle would make sense if you're not allowed to ask the obvious such as your own gender or whether they are guarding something etc.

  • Just came up with my own version of the questions: would the other guard say you are not a liar: if he answers yes, you're standing in front of hell, if he says no you just asked heaven's guard.

  • 10 people want to go to hell...oh, wait. There isn't one.

  • i think we should really think really about what blasphemy that drowned our mind in jocks and nonsense, cause we imagined all these year that heaven and hill is nonsense, now lets think what will it be if these nonsense was true, in this time we will be Good and so polite when we speak about our Creator, and we will feel that we own him -the mighty- this time, but unfortunately who know this fact is the dead people and nobody sorry no dead body can tell is if that was a fact, but we have to guess

  • ask what gender you are :D

  • Just ask "are you currently guarding a door?"

  • @fouyuck89 Excellent work! :-)

  • @fouyuck89 you genius!

  • @fouyuck89 Yeah but then you've used your one question and are screwed.

  • @wowsa0 But if the guard I ask says no, I would just go through the other door because I know he's lying.

  • @fouyuck89 Ah yeah they said the riddle wrong here, it isn't necessarily true that the guard that lies is guarding hell and the guard that tells the truth is guarding heaven. You're not supposed to know in advance which way round it is.

  • Comment removed

  • @fouyuck89 No because the guards aren't (in the traditional riddle) in front of their respected doors.

  • Comment removed

  • waste of time

  • Simple. What is the color of my shirt?

  • I'm pretty sure the actual riddle doesn't specify which guard is guarding which door, so using a question like 'What is 2+2?' wouldn't work as you'd only find out which guard is which and not which door is which. You can't ask another question so this knowledge of which guard is which is useless.

  • @OuterSpacedRS but that's the whole idea of the riddle, you just need to know which is which by one question then you can go through the door...so the knowledge of which guard is which isn't useless, that's the point XD

  • @OuterSpacedRS Then how do you know who is telling the truth?

  • @skibidido You ask the question ricky says in the video. 'If I asked the other guard what door he's guarding, what would he say?'. There's a similar version in the movie 'Labyrinth'.

  • Here is my answer.

So if you BELIEVE that god exists then its simple!

Ask the gurds: "Does god exist?" Assuming he does, "the devil" answers "NO" wile the angel answers "YES." God is all about faith. No matter what you have read or others have told you.

  • @jjthedragon But the devil knows god exists. And the devil can lie.

  • @jjthedragon no matter what others have told you? what are you doing telling people what to thing then?

  • Ok guys this is very easy, All you have to do is ask the guard what color shirt he is wearing and you have the answer. Example using the guards in the cartoon. You would ask guard #1 what color shirt are you wearing? If he answers "red" then it is heaven, if he says "blue" (or any other color then it is hell) because he wouldn't be telling the truth.

  • easy! I would ask "is my name Phil"

truth guard would say yes, because that's my name

lie guard would be forced to say no.

    Enter door behind truth guard.

  • @InuvikPhil the truth guard might be guarding hell. Your way you can find out which guard is lying but then you still do not know which door is right.

  • This was in the Labrybth and it still fucks me up.

  • you can just ask: Is GOD real?( we can assume he is since there is a heaven and hell. also they both know God)

  • Since the liar guards hell, and the truth teller guards Heaven, this is really easy. "My birthday is blablah, when is my birthday?" Then go through the truth teller's door.

  • Rick Gervais aka Fred Flintstone!

  • Ricky fucked this up a little, read the description on this video to get a better understanding.

  • u could just ask wat 2 + 2 because u know the answer an the devil would have to lie so would say anything but 4

  • Ricky is wrong. If you asked them what the OTHER one would say you would still have no clue. Because either one would say the other is guarding hell. You should ask them something like "Are you both guarding heaven"?

  • @BigDaddyDJD you are a moron!

  • @rbrunskill what did i get wrong?

  • @BigDaddyDJD The point is that the person guarding heaven knows that the person guarding hell would lie and say he guards heaven. So when asked what the other person would say, the guard who is guarding heaven would say heaven.

  • @BigDaddyDJD but if you asked the devil "what would the other one say" he would lie and say hell. So Ohhh fuck I just go it. Nevermind. I APOLOGIZE RICKY. Apologies, all around. /cut to George Sr. having a tea party in the attic with the dolls

  • Why not ask what is my name?

  • You can only ask ONE question. If you waste your one question on figuring out which guard is truthful or lying, you can't figure out which door it is.

  • How about "Are you both guarding Hell?"

  • What the shit?

I dont get rickys logic, if you asked the devil what door hes guard, he'd said heaven.

Since that would be lying, if you asked the angle he'd say heaven, because its the truth.

Theres no god damn diffrence between it, you still have to guess.

  • @TheDarklord0211

No you don't. Ricky explained it wrong. You need to ask one of them what the other would say, the answer will always be a lie. The devil will untruthfully say the angel is lying and the angel will truthfully say the the devil is lying... either way, it's a lie. So just choose the other door. Got it?

  • just like the perspective that Douglas Adams had for hitch hikers guide to the galaxy if you dont understand the answer you won`t know what the question was in this casethe question must be where is hell? or

    where is the devil?

  • try the brainden dot com logic problems for many of these types of riddles. better shave your head first cuz you'll pull out yer hair on some of them!!
