  • these guys were AWESOME.... and they were funny when they showed up on the Beverly Hillbillies from time too time..... " pearl pearl pearl...he's nutty as a squirrrrlll....dont go out with lester flatt...he slicks his hair with bacon fat..... "........classic

  • as soon as the song started i instantly though johnny cash.

  • I play the harp. I had heard that the original pronounciation was jaw harp and jews is just a corruption with no racial connotation intended. some folks need to calm down I guess.

  • Jim Stafford did a cover of this song.

  • this is beautiful.

  • I miss this kinda music...at least it's here on youtube :) Thanks so much for posting this!

  • You're damn right...My Dad used to play one, and that is exactly what it was called......too damn bad if some people dont like it...

  • dam I must be old!!!!!!!!

  • wish the music was like this now days

  • Right at the end, sounds like someone yells out "Foggy Mountain Rock". He knows a great song to request when he hears it !!!

  • is it Josh Graves on the dobro?

  • @tubegucker1 ...Yes I'm sure that's Josh on dobro. Fantastic !

  • I also think he's using his voice to simulate a jew's harp. I wish I could have seen the audience reaction to this. A gig in Carnegie Hall is no small achievement. When I first heard Flatt and Scruggs had been there, I had to do some checking before I believed it. I thought they only permitted classical music. I have since found out that's not the case. But it's a huge honor to play there.

  • @humpfester I LOVE their paddycakes

  • @misscountrygal1

He says he doesn't have his jew's harp with him so I think he is using just his mouth to simulate a jew's harp. jmo

  • @misscountrygal1 sounds like he swallowed a frog

  • Tennessee Pride Whole Hog Sausage.

  • FRANKLY, I DON´T GIVE A HOOT IF IT ISN´T

POLITICALLY CORRECT, & PEOPLE TRY TO TAG

RACISM TO IT, I STILL & WILL ALWAYS CALL IT

A JEWS-HARP & THE SAME GOES FOR "DOBRO".

  • @IGOROZKARSKY

Don't think anyone could give a stuff about political correctness, but the instrument originally had nothing to do with Middle Eastern people.

    It was the JAWS Harp!

  • @IGOROZKARSKY Explain to me how the dobro is considered racist?

  • I kin ' member my maw and me a listnin' to the Flat and Scruggs show on the TV growin' up. What I wouldn't give to be sittin' with her now listin' to this good ol' time pickin'.

  • @kjohns2001 These shows are available from Netflix. I've been enjoying them and going back to my teens. There are several hour long two programs per to enjoy complete with Martha White commercials.

Goodness Gracious, It's Good! Now you bake light with Martha White!!!

  • its actually called a juice harp not jew

  • @MrGaredneck actually it is called a jew's harp. "Juice harp" is just an aberration of the original name.

  • ricky skaggs is coming to watseka illinois on aug 26

  • this was original rap!!!

  • Listening to some old time bluegrass when suddenly, overtone singing out of nowhere!

  • i love this picking

  • My granny and mother adored this song. If nothing else, I love wildwood flower because of that. But, honestly, I love it because it's a quite tricky song when played properly on a steel guitar..

Thanks for giving a taste of Flatt &Scruggs

  • That´s best bluegrass picking !

    Thanks for posting :)

  • I am so appalled at the bad attitudes on here.

  • @Kevintine For a recording so old, it does sound good!

  • oh, this reminds me of my dad and his guitar playing and honky tonk piano....they just don't play music like they used. and i miss it! good stuff!

  • hes not useing a jews harp. a guy says in the beginnin that he doesnt have it with him. hes just makin the sound with his voice. you guys are retarded, lol

  • What is actually missing is Maybelle Carter playing the autoharp. The guitar part is a piece of cake. The autoharp part isn't.

  • nice guitars

  • Nice!

  • @shamrock4500 that sounds like good times my friend, god bless wonderfull moms and dads

  • this reminds me of my old man R.I.P

  • I love that dobro in this!

  • what is the really strange vocal noise that is neither guitar nor banjo??

  • @Timothydlol: it's a strange vocal noise, something akin to Central Asian harmonic singing (aka, Tuvan "throat singing.")..

  • @Timothydlol tis a jaw harp or a jews harp (he does intro it right at the begining)

  • My dad played country music his entire life, and so have I. I was in my 20's when I learned that the term "Jew's Harp" was a slur against Jews.

  • @misscountrygal1 Note in the into that Cousin Jake (bass player) tells Lester that he "forgot" to bring it, so he mimics the sound of the harp with his voice. Pretty cool.

  • juice harp/mouth harp/jews harp all the same

    another lost art

  • As we say in virginia,,,3 people can......

  • yep, livin' in the South is cool! I ain't gotta kiss no bottocks! I ain't gotta pretend to be somebody I don't wanna be!

  • two of the best

  • Im 20 and mopping the floor at the deli .....

  • @TheMrSimplexity But you're making an honest mans dollar, more will come !

  • I remember these guys from Beverly Hillbillies, love the music.

  • The jews harp sits between the top and bottom teeth (if you have em) and depends on the amount of empty space behind it for its sound.

My ex wife figured it was just the instrument for me.

  • I have one of those sitting on the chest-of-drawers. I should learn how to play it...don't think it'll be hard.

  • juice harpe thats what I call it? Anyone else call it that or am I wrong

  • so talented

  • This song always gets me so emotional!

  • Good old Cousin Jake .. a very talented artist in his own right .. and a cut-up comic of the first order. Great to hear him in action here. I'd sure love to get my hands on the footage of this concert .. if the fabulous soundtrack is anything to go by ....

  • Everyday at my high school. A girl would be playing a Jaw harp during passing time.

  • it doesnt get any better.josh is

     the king

  • @buzbutler Ditto! Josh throws in that neat little "bark" which sounds great, and he is a master of improvisation. Way to go, Josh !

  • its a piece of metal with a semicircle figure on one end and 2 prongs that come to where you can put your mouth on it and a thin piece that is in between the 2 prongs and the sound comes from mouth movement

  • The Jews' Harp is renamed, "Bruce Harp" today.

  • at 1:28 its a jaw harp

  • is´nt a jaw but a jew harp? not! is a thoat

    singing,,,,, dakplat

  • jaw/jews harp.

  • @thedarkpoets no its not he said at the begining he didnt have it. he's doing that with his voice

  • @thedarkpoets hahah jew harp

  • @thedarkpoets I'd say he just immitates it with his own voice

  • @Gozdiklaani yep.

  • first song i learned to play

  • Thank you. I "luv" F&S version of this song!

    :-)

  • @sciencekiller7689 Haha hell yeah. Doesn't get any better than Dixie. = )

  • The older I get, the more precious this genre of music is to me. Love Flatt and Scruggs and thanks to the Carters who brought it to us first and popularized it!

  • i couldnt of said it better, takes me back.

  • sure it's not a mouth bow then

  • the great uncle josh and cousin jake, the backbone to the greatest bluegrass band ever. this is from the live at carnagie hall concert, i have it on cd, great album. they do a great version of mckinleys gone on there.

  • It's called "Jaw Hard" AND "Jews Harp".

  • It's called either a jaw harp or a jews harp. I've never heard anyone call it it a "jaw hard"....

  • oops, typo. I meant "Jaw Harp". :)

  • Also "juice harp"

  • jew's harp or juice harp?

  • Jaw harp = it is played and echoed by touching the jaw

  • He wasn't using it in this video. He didn't have it as he explains in the beginning of the song. It's a pretty good interpretation of one though.

  • @thedarkpoets Kind of funny don't ya think? Them folks sure did a lot with a little.

  • I believe it's called both a "jew's" and "jaw" harp. Don't quote me on this but I believe the reason it's called a "jew's harp" is because it origninated in Eastern Europe and was mostly a Slavic instrument. Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe and Russia brought it to America where it probably got the name "Jew's harp". That would seem to make sense but of course someone will probably point out that I'm completely wrong. It's just my theory.

  • @UJS8X

    Nope. It originated in Asia.

  • Haha, jew's harp. That made me laugh.

  • Earl picks the guitar on this one. And that is not a Jew's harp Cousin Jake is playing. It is Cousin Jake imitating a Jew's Harp!

  • A Jew's Harp.

  • whats that on 1:27 - 1:48

  • very well done , long live Flatt and Scruggs

  • I believe this is the Live From Carnegie Hall album. Great, great, great!!!

  • One of the best versions ever of this fine old guitar classic, flat picking at it's best by the best !!!!

  • @Macangusagain Lester Flatt played with a thumb and finger pick, not a flat pick, and if your playing a resonator with a flatpick, you're retarded

  • @MrThedalaillamaknows

Retarded like Tut Taylor? He's done pretty well for himself with as a flatpicking dobro player.

  • @voodoorhythm his tone is tinny and his attack is violent, it's not the dobro sound, and because he uses a flatpick in a position it's not meant to be used in, his songs have to be so basic, that anyone could play them, prior experience or not. I'm all for innovation, but only if it's good, and i'm sorry, but in my opinion, that man makes a dobro sound terrible.

  • @voodoorhythm there is a reason he is known as *THE* flatpick dobro player, it's because he's the only one, because it's a bad idea, and it sounds shit.

  • @Macangusagain Thank you , Mama Maybell.
