Man, when you had crappy graphics... you REALLY had to be creative on your advertisements which is why 90% of the commercials of the 80's rely highly on creativity and don't show any gameplay footage. Nowadays, it's almost all gameplay footage.
You just never know when a giant centipede might leave a copy of some game lying next to your Atari. Should you make the mistake of playing it, your TV will eat you, transform you into a hideous monstrosity, and vomit you back out, leaving you with no recourse but to beg for death. The moral of the story: if a game you don't remember buying suddenly appears next to you system, DON'T PLAY IT!
Only the cocaine-fueled 80's could have brought us such an ad.
@Faybro I agree with you in part but in those times there wasn't too much to "talk about" in those games. read my previous comment, contemporary times makes cover games less interesting that the game itself, in other words, old cover games used to talk a lot about the game, trying that your "own" imagination do to rest. Nowadays thanks new technologies kids stopped imagining because they already have all in the powerful games you can find in any store today, even much better plots than movies.
@KevsterJester42 The Phantom of the Opera musical came out in 1986, so this commercial predates it by around half a decade or so. Looks like Andrew Lloyd Webber owes Atari some money, right? =P
What was that supossed to be David Cronenberg's Centipede? xD

It does sound like Phantom of the Opera. Thing is, this commercial aired 3 or 4 years before Phantom of the Opera premiered in 1986.

When your commercial has more of a plotline than the video game itself, you know something is wrong.
