One good thing about being a "senior citizen" is that I got to hear him every night at the Night Owl Cafe in Greenwich Village in the summer of 1965, before most of you guys were born.
One of Fred's best. I remember hearing THE DOLPHINS (Ronstadt?) and later picking up on the little known Fred Neil. He was a talent and his leaving the scene to get his life back was a loss to music. Miss him. Time passes. . .
Holy hell I didn't know Fred was dead! I thought he was still just hiding out in Florida and hangin with dolphins. Damn, bummer. I remember Mojo Magazine doing a big article about him maybe in 2000, definitely while he was still alive, as they said he declines all interviews. I has no idea. How did he die?

@PolarSkua Actually it was John Sebastian (Lovin' Spoonful) on harp. Highly regarded by the folk / singer songwriters, lucky enough to have him sit in...
This is amazing. Found him through an Interview with Bill Callahan. He mentioned Fred Neil when asked who he listens to. Bill Callahan btw is totally talented as well. Wish I had heard of Fred Neil before. Can't wait to hear his other songs.
Jackie Hall, Michael Mann, Anne Ardolino, Sal Lombardo, Mel the left handed banjo player, Peter Tork, Richie Havens, Joel Boyce (from the Basement Cafe) Zaharia, Magic Jack (mngr of folksingers), Pem from Rienzi's, Jonathan Talbut Penkin - flamenco guitar player - just a few of the names from back in those days.
Oh yeah - you're right - there was also Buzzy Lindhardt and let us not forget the album Freddie did with Vince Martin - they did a song called "Linin Track" which I absolutely LOVED - everybody from our little crew would play it. It had one rhythm that would play while the other person played a d modal raga to it for the break in the middle - it could get pretty intense.
@funnytoo Karen lived right downstairs from me on 7th Ave. She asked me to write her biography. She was dying. Itwas too sad for me. I couldn'.t do it. It was one of the shittiest decisions I ever made.
@artskate2000 what a gut-wrenching thing to live with, yet, you did have the pleasure & good fortune to have been there for her, both Karen & Fred will be loved and missed forever.
By the way I saw Michael Mann talking to himself on Bleecker about 2 years ago his real name is Michael Wurtzberger, I knew Fred's wife and daughter from those wayback when Village days , I used to play The Four Winds , with Bruce Murdoch who you can now hear on youtube, Fred's wife called him the giraff because of his height and freckles, lol
@Anntelope I do not believe I have ever seen Mike Mann referenced before. He also influenced Ned Carter who taught me to play (the Legendary RT). Might also throw in Splivey (Richie Havens acaopaniast at RienziS. You could also throw in the Fat Black Pussycat.. the Third Side (Charley Washburn), David Blue (Cohen), Richard, Cam and Bert. . .but anyone who remembers Mike Mann, that is a gem. Who are you?
@spacedoginnebraska Unbelievable how unknown he is to most people. He's at least as emotional as Tim Buckley without being so whiny (although Tim Buckley is great too).
This Is, "The Man!" Nothing Else To Be Said. Just Listen..

My brother used to sing this song with his guitar. The words have always stayed with me, even though my brother is no longer with us.
